OSA BIENNIAL LUNCH AND FAREWELL TO MRS JOY SHEPHERD

Welcome to the July Edition of the Chronicle Post.

PRINCIPAL’S APPOINTMENT It is with much anticipation that we await the arrival in 2015 of our new Principal, Mrs Kim Kiepe BEd, DipT, MACEL, MAICD. Kim comes to us from St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School in Brisbane bringing with her a wealth of experience in education.

As Kim and her husband, Peter prepare to move to Perth, we look forward to welcoming them to St Hilda’s and life in Western Australia.

OSA BAZAAR Traditionally held the day before Mother’s Day, our annual Bazaar continues to grow each year with more and more people in attendance. Many hands make this event so successful and I would like to sincerely thank those who contributed with such dedication this year. In particular, I would like to extend my thanks to Bronwyn Gaze for her generous donation of a painting that was auctioned.

I strongly encourage more Old Scholars to register their interest in the Bazaar by either taking a stall or becoming involved behind the scenes. It brings together the whole School community and should not be missed!

To wish Mrs Joy Shepherd every happiness in her retirement, the Old Scholars Association will host a lunch on Saturday, 1 November at the Chidley Campus.

Joy has had a significant impact on our School and will be greatly missed. I do hope many of you, in particular those who attended school during Joy’s tenure, will be able to join us at this special event.

The 2014 OSA Committee looks forward to you joining the Biennial Lunch, your Class reunion, or other special events featured in the calendar over leaf.

There is plenty of opportunity to remain connected.

Old Scholars Travel Award Are you wanting a travel experience that will enhance your learning and provide you with the opportunity to give back to your community?

The 2013 Travel Award recipient, Kylie Jones (Morrison, ’86), will be attending an international childhood conference in Melbourne in August. In her profession as a social worker, one of Kylie’s main areas of interest is Neuro Plasticity in children and the ability to build and connect positive neural pathways in children after they have experienced significant stress and trauma.

Kylie is looking forward to the opportunity to increase her knowledge

in the area of Neuro plasticity and is particularly interested in the use of therapeutic meditation with children.

By attending the conference she hopes to understand the role of meditation in assisting children and their families in a therapeutic setting.

Kylie says that social workers are often not able to attend international conferences and that receiving the travel award has not only been beneficial on a personal level but also for her profession.

She is looking forward to sharing her conference knowledge with her fabulous colleagues at PMH as well as with St Hilda’s students through the mentoring program.

The OSA will continue this incentive for the coming 12 months and all ages are encouraged to apply. The award is valued at $2,500.00 for travel in 20152016. Applications close on Monday 15 September 2014 and the winner will be announced at the OSA Biennial Lunch in November.

COUNTRY LUNCH Country Lunches have always been eagerly anticipated and the OSA looks forward to extending this tradition in 2015. Typically hosted by an Old Scholar who lives within a 200km radius of Perth, the lunch is an open invitation to members and the wider St Hilda’s community to gather in a garden or rustic kitchen for a casual, easy afternoon.

MENTORING This year we had a record number of 29 Old Scholars who enthusiastically participated in the OSA Mentoring program in June. Working in small groups with students from Years 10-12, the Mentors shared personal experiences that have influenced their career and practical insights of the workplace. Mentors embraced the opportunity to ‘give back’ to the School and their contribution was greatly appreciated.

One of our mentors this year, Pip Gooding (Shields, ’98), had this to say about her experience as a mentor:

“I love coming back to visit my school and seeing all the wonderful changes that have taken place. Most of all and what I cherish most, is catching up with my school friends. Very happy to hear that the girls enjoyed the session - I too, enjoyed being part of the program.

It is so valuable for both students

and industry to have opportunities to connect. I love that this is a direction St Hilda’s has taken, particularly the breadth of industry that was represented - there are so many career options to consider and many more that are yet to be invented!”

of a small but dedicated group of past boarders I was kept entertained at my place well into the night.

30 YEAR REUNION Class of 84 Lasting friendships are forged at school but at risk of sounding overly sentimental, nothing could prepare me for reconnecting with such a lovely bunch of women.

I spoke to my neighbour the next day to ask if we were too noisy, he smiled and said; “No not at all, but it must have been a fun night, all I could hear was the sound of laughter!”. At the end of the day, there was nothing to be apprehensive about, we all had a fabulous time and suffice to say that we are talking about meeting up on a more regular basis and I look forward to the next reunion.

We started with the obligatory school tour, and how things have changed since 1984. The experience of walking around looking at all the impressive new facilities was thankfully still an intimate and familiar one, particularly as we walked through the central courtyard where no doubt hundreds of similar looking photos have been taken over the years of groups of students sitting or milling around at lunch time.

The next stage of the reunion, which I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about, took place at my home. About 40 of us, some from as far a field as Tasmania, Queensland and NSW toasted to absent friends and engaged in happy, reminiscent conversations, all the while enabling the years to melt away back to the good old student days with the help of a few embarrassing but hilarious photos.

Sarah Hayward (‘07) Since leaving school, Sarah has completed a Commerce degree at UWA, and is currently in her final year of Law at Murdoch University. Sarah was in The Hague working as a legal consultant at the Special Tribunal of Lebanon and is currently a Lance Corporal in the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police, proudly serving as a member of the Australian Army Reserves.

BAZAAR The OSA Bazaar was held this year on May 10 at the Chidley Campus. What started as a humble event a decade ago with just a handful of local producers has now grown to a major event.

This year was no exception with 50 stallholders and well over 1000 people attending on the day.

Planning starts six months in advance and the success of the day is due to a wonderful combined effort from the Old Scholars committee, the Development Office and a number of Old Scholar volunteers who donate their time and cooking skills.

The committee supports emerging and established makers and producers and especially those with a connection to the School. The quality of the products on sale is exceptional and there is a wonderful selection and variety including leather goods, ceramics, local fresh produce and skincare. As well, there are a number of eagerly anticipated stalls organised and run by the OSA such as our fresh cakes, jams and preserves, beautiful flowers and The Teahouse which serves delicious food throughout the day.

IGSSA OLD GIRLS TENNIS COMPETITION On 3 April, 2014 the Old Girls IGSSA Tennis Tournament was held at Reabold Tennis club.

The St Hilda’s team, comprising of Michelle Atkins (Wark ‘84), Jessie Lamond (Ladyman, ‘88), Sharon Burvill (Seymour, ‘80), Sheena Storm (Richmond, ‘83), Fiona Allan (Richmond, ‘83), Bethwyn Keech (’90), Jo Dawkins

(Meredith, ‘72) and Felicity York (‘80) came in at a very respectable fourth place with PLC winning the day.

All had a great day of tennis and lots of fun.
