and increased pastoral care support, which address student needs and add value to the student experience.

Every year, the College calendar is full of academic, cultural, sporting, social and community service activities that define the community and ensure that each member can make a contribution and develop a strong sense of belonging.

Special memories of Gala Dinner, the play, faculty Dinners, reunion events and sporting competitions continue to reinforce the special nature and benefits that accrue from membership of the St Hilda’s community and will be long remembered by all.

There are many people who have supported me in my role as Principal over the past 18 years, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the College Council, College Fellows, our generous benefactors who have made so much possible, the Heads of Colleges both here in Melbourne and elsewhere in the country, the dedicated members of our College staff and students both past and present.

Principal’s Report

Welcome to this edition of The Chronicle – the last to which I will contribute as College Principal.

As I prepare to write my report, my mind is full of memories from the past 18 years.

These have been very special years for me and for Colin, and they have been years of growth and change for St Hilda’s College. It has been the highlight of my professional career to be associated with members of the College community as they have made their transition from school student to university student and independent adult.

My approach to the role of Principal was that of an educator who wanted members of the College to live balanced lives, to make the most of their academic opportunities and to acquire the skills and values that would enable them to be productive and contributory members of any community to which they might

belong. I have tried to be student focused in my approach to the leadership of the College, to encourage student endeavours and to support student leaders in their important role. Together, we have worked to ensure that the College community is a positive and inclusive place for all residents.

Over 18 years, decision making within the College has focused on meeting the changing needs of students and on complying with changing expectations and needs of society. This is evident in our annual summer works renovation projects, but also in more significant capital works programs such as the construction of the James Wing and the enlarged Miller Academic Centre. A more recent focus has been on increasing access to the opportunities offered by College membership through our scholarship program, and on the provision of enhanced services such as professional mentoring, career advice

As Colin and I contemplate life after St Hilda’s, we look forward to spending time at our beach house and to travel opportunities without the constraints of the College or university calendar. We will, of course, miss many features of being part of such a vibrant community on a day by day basis. In particular, we will miss the regular interactions with staff, students, tutors, Council members, Fellows and friends of the College. We will, of course, stay in contact with the College and will look forward to hearing news of College happenings and about future developments.

As I finish this report, I would like to congratulate Brenda Holt once again on her appointment as the sixth Principal of St Hilda’s College. I hope that she enjoys her time as Principal as much as I have.

This College is a strong and distinctive community with its special mix of traditional and modern. It is a community which genuinely lives its motto of Communitas on a daily basis.

Chair of Council’s Report

St Hilda’s owes a great debt of gratitude to Barbara Green.

2017 was a significant year for St Hilda’s College: After 18 years, our Principal, Barbara Green, has retired. An abridged version of a speech I gave at Barbara’s Farewell Dinner on 29 November 2017, can be found on page 26.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Barbara again for her outstanding service.

Not just for her contribution as Principal, but also for her time as Chair of the Council, and for the work she did as Chair of the Heads of Melbourne Colleges and President of University Colleges Australia.

As one era ends, another one begins.

The Council is delighted to have appointed Dr Brenda Holt to commence as Principal in 2018. Brenda has a close connection with the University of Melbourne and its colleges. Among other things, she has been Dean of Studies at Queen’s College, Chief of Staff and Head of Education Strategy at Trinity College, and Head of Whitley College.

Brenda completed her Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Melbourne. Her thesis addressed some of the complexities of inequality in education which are difficult to measure, particularly for students from small towns. Entitled, ‘Global Routes/Rural Roots: Identity, Rural Women and Higher Education’, her thesis was completed in 2008 and won the 2009 Chancellor’s Prize (Social Sciences).

Most recently, Brenda has been at Monash College, Monash University, as Deputy Director, Program Development and Innovation.

With the approval of the Uniting Church in Australia, St Hilda’s Council resolved this year to become an incorporated body. St Hilda’s will remain associated with the Uniting Church, but will now operate as a separate legal entity.

This will give the College greater scope for expansion and the undertaking of major works in the future.

I want to thank the Incorporation Sub-Committee of the Council, especially Peter Kempen, for the work done over many years to achieve this outcome.

I wish all of the St Hilda’s community a productive and rewarding 2018.

Junior Common Room President and Vice President’s Report

Boy oh boy, what a year it has been for St Hilda’s College! It’s hard to believe that 12 months ago we had just been elected into our new roles and were eagerly preparing for the year ahead. We came together as a newly formed General Committee (GC) and spent the last few weeks of college in 2016 planning and bonding, formally through strategic planning meetings and informally at our annual GC retreat.

After exams were done and dusted, some of us were lucky enough to be involved in fresher selecting. This was a great opportunity to get to know each other and also meet potential new students of the College. We saw some of these faces on Welcome Sunday, as we commenced Orientation Week (O-Week) after a rejuvenating summer.

A huge thank you must go to the O-Week leaders for all their hard work running such a successful week, and for the countless hours they put in over summer to ensure O-Week ran smoothly.

One of the additions for 2017 was our Student Pastoral Care coordinators (Mia and Adrian), who tagged along for O-Week, helping to ensure that first-year student welfare was a top priority, and promoting pastoral care within the College community.

The College calendar was again full of social, sporting and cultural events that kept everyone busy and entertained throughout the year. We kicked off with Commencement Dinner, shortly followed by the VP event, which were enjoyed by all.

Throughout the year, we continued to build a successful student-led Pastoral Care Program, which has been supported overwhelmingly by the students and staff of the College. To know that our students place importance on the wellbeing of their friends and want to make College a happier and healthier place for all, is heart-warming. We ran numerous Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training sessions, which now see over a third of the College community trained in mental health. A huge thank you to Molly, Liam, Mia and Adrian for their commitment to the Pastoral Care team, and the many hours looking out for the wellbeing of our students. We are proud of this program and for the awareness it has raised on this important issue.

But the highlight of the year, as always, was Hilda’s Day. As many of our traditional venues were not available to us, Hilda’s Day got a bit of a revamp in 2017. With fresh Hilda’s Day bum bags introduced to the event, we prepared for the highly anticipated day. Despite light rain in the morning, the sun came out in the afternoon and everyone enjoyed the activities, which this year included a mechanical bucking bull. By all accounts, the day was successful and without incident, and everyone came together for a jolly good time.

We would like to thank the student leaders, including major and minor conveners, who selflessly put in countless hours to benefit others, to ensure we had the successful year that we did. To the 2017 GC, thank you for looking after your own portfolios and events, for leading the College with pride, and for ensuring that the culture is more reflective of everyone in the College community.

Reflecting on the past year, we are proud of the many achievements we were fortunate enough to be involved in, including: • Introducing an annual budget and achieving a surplus for the year.

• Introducing the inaugural St Hilda’s

College Student Club Scholarship which, in conjunction with the College, provides an award of $10,000. This will make a significant impact on the recipient’s financial ability to return to College for another year, and realise their leadership potential by seizing opportunities that would otherwise not be possible.

• Winning 5 sporting premierships, and the coveted Tickner Cup. • Winning the Battle of the Bands Competition.

• The level of support for all sporting and cultural activities throughout the year.

• Purchasing capital items for long-term use in the Student Club, including sporting and music equipment and College tents, which have been well used throughout the year.

Good luck to Adrian, Bec and next year’s leadership team. The Student Club could not be in more capable hands and we are excited to see what you will achieve in the next 12 months.

Finally, we would not have had such a successful year without Barbara and the guidance she gave us throughout our tenure. It takes a brave College Principal to hand over such a lot of responsibility to students, to help them reach their leadership potential. St Hilda’s College is the community it is today because of the values that Barbara has instilled in each and every student who has been lucky enough to call this place their home in the past 18 years. Both of us are humbled to be the last Student Club leaders to serve and learn from Barbara, and we hope this friendship continues long into the future.

First Year Representatives

At the beginning of the year, our 2017 first-year cohort was welcomed into the St Hilda’s College community. Our O-Week was one of the most exciting weeks of our lives, providing us with the opportunity to get to know Melbourne, make lifelong friends and experience a variety of activities.

Following from this was Somers Camp, which allowed us to strengthen first and second year friendships.

Our year as first-year representatives was very rewarding. We had the opportunity to play an active part in the General Committee while representing our cohort. We contributed to how the College is run in terms of event planning, maintaining first and second-year relations, and voicing the opinions of first years’.

Leadership was certainly a challenge, however the help and guidance we received from other committee members was invaluable to improving our leadership skills. Our year could not have run as smoothly as it did without this level of guidance.

As part of our portfolio, we organised the Christmas in July event, which ran smoothly and brought the community together. This involved having a Kris Kringle, where members of the Student Club receive anonymous gifts from each other. This got everyone excited for Christmas in six months’ time, and was extremely successful.

Also, as first-year representatives, we had the opportunity to lead the Environments Committee. We developed an Earth Day for future years, where we plan to have live music and Milo while the lights are turned off to reduce energy consumption.

For another event, we discussed introducing Tupperware containers next year to reduce plastic waste and improve recycling.

Moving out of school and home is daunting, but the warm environment of our Principal Barbara Green fostered at College made our year wonderful.

Barbara’s help in leading the College was much appreciated and will be missed.

Congratulations on your time at St Hilda’s and we wish you all the best in the coming years.

Second Year Representatives

To begin with we would like to thank the 2017 General Committee (GC). We couldn’t have asked for a better group to work with and can’t imagine what the year would have been like without them.

Furthermore, we would like to thank Barbara who has overseen our growth and development as leaders within the College community.

We both progressed from fresher reps to second-year reps, meeting new challenges head-on as seasoned partners in ‘crime’. The largest part of our portfolio is the organisation of College merchandise, and in typical Hildarian style we kicked off 2017 with the biggest merchandise sale of the year, selling our beautiful blue and green to a mixture of nervously excited freshers and enthusiastic parents.

Throughout the year, we improved the organisation of Hilda’s by installing a new merchandise cupboard and streamlining our range to the same company, Canterbury. We also introduced our fabulous new merchandise item, the ‘Hilda’s hoodie’. The quality and style of the new hoodie turned out to be much better than we thought, and it is hailed as a great success. We also altered two of the existing merchandise items: the footy tops and the supporter’s tops.

The design of the footy tops hadn’t been altered for many years, and we are pleased to report that the new design and better-quality fabric have been welcomed with open arms.

In addition to the organisation of College merchandise, as second-year reps we oversee College sponsorship and sit on the GC as representatives of our year level. This year we successfully fostered a number of external relationships to maintain sponsorship opportunities.

Student Club Directors

SOCIAL Ambitious and jam-packed, this year the Social Committee organised some of the shining highlights of the Student Club calendar. The year started with the assembly of a committee spanning the three year levels of the College. Full of enthusiasm and natural panache, we crafted the first new event of the year in week five: Los Carnivalos de las Hilda’s (also known as Directors event #1). The front quad was transformed into a multicultural fiesta of food and garden games, giving everyone a chance to soak up the last rays of the summer sun.

The second semester began with organising an intercollegiate paint party with University, Whitley and St Mary’s colleges. It was a colourful, whirl of fun that gave us the opportunity to get to know our neighbours on the crescent.

All-in-all, it was a memorable year for fun and friends, and I had an absolute blast helping to organise some of it.

CULTURAL It was an incredibly busy and enjoyable year for the Cultural Committee. As cultural director, I organised a range of events at the College with the committee and my fellow directors, Zoe and Ryan. I also had the opportunity to organise intercollegiate events with representatives from around the Crescent, in my role on the Intercollegiate Activities Council (ICAC).

There were a number of students involved in ICAC events throughout the year, including the Fresher Dance-Off competition, Trivia Night, Variety Night and Debating. In 2017, Hilda’s also participated in competitive events to earn points for the ICAC cup, and placed fourth in Quidditch, second in Theatre Sports, and did a spectacular performance at the Battle of the Bands competition, finishing in first place.

With the help of my committee, we held two cheese nights. The second cheese night was held before the ICAC Soiree.

A number of Hilda’s students attended the soiree, with ticket sales raising money for MINUS18, an organisation that supports youth in the LGBTQI community.

This year was an amazing one for the arts at St Hilda’s, and I would like to thank Zoe and Ryan for their dedication to the director’s events we organised, and to the General Committee for their support.

FUNKTIONS In 2017, the Funktions Committee planned six Turns and two new director’s events, which kept us very busy. We started off the year with Toga Turn, welcoming 100 new fresh faces into our community. This was followed by Turns with themes ranging from tropical to the more obscure office supplies. I had the joy of seeing some interesting costumes, including a printer, chocolate milk and a goggle-wearing spiderman. The highlight for me was organising the Full Moon Party Turn, bringing in black lights to give the Junior Common Room a funky glow.

This year the director’s team of Ryan, Sophie and myself introduced a mystery tour ‘apocalyptic’ event, where Hilda’s zombies, aliens, cowboys and dinosaurs went on a tour around Melbourne and danced the night away to some of our finest bands. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves after many nights spent brainstorming and planning something brand new for the College.

While sometimes challenging, my role as Funktions director was a truly rewarding experience. It has really made me appreciate the work and effort that goes into making Hilda’s events as enjoyable as possible. A special thank you to the Funktions Committee, members of the General Committee and of course Chris Tyson, for putting up with my endless decorations, late night shopping trips and post-turn clean-ups. None of the Turns would have been half as successful without your help!

Joining in undergraduate activities is a blast (makes us ‘oldies’ feel young again).

Being in the MCR, we get to choose and prioritise the undergraduate activities we want to participate in. We had members represent us in the First and Seconds footy, the College play and Hilda’s Futsal.

We also supported each other with other members coming to watch the game or play. And we can’t forget the highlight of every semester – the grudge match between the MCR/SCR and the JCR teams. I am very proud to say the MCR/ SCR team came home victorious both semesters in a row.

Middle Common Room President’s Report

What a fantastic year 2017 was for the Middle Common Room (MCR). We welcomed many new members who added to a great atmosphere of laughter and affection. Being a small group of 11, the MCR has the rare privilege, or nightmare - depending on your perspective, of getting to know everyone very well. At the beginning of each new

university year we look forward to meeting the chosen few who join our mad party. This year there were two mad boys from Perth with the same birthday, an amazing New Zealander, a sarcastic Canadian, a ghost from Queensland and an up-graded Junior Common Room member.

The MCR also hosts its own events: our famous intercollegiate graduate Halloween party and the more infamous Family Feud night. But we also like to have quiet nights watching scary movies and FIFA matches after lunch. This year we were introduced to the fantastic and addictive game of Bananagrams. We also used our birthdays as an excuse to eat cake or, in some cases, cheese (for those discerning people who do not like cake!!).

Sadly, we say goodbye to our Principal Barbara Green and to many members of our group. Barbara was always accessible to the MCR and enjoyed attending events with us such as the semester dinners and the cocktail night. Like our fellow members, she will be missed. While some of our members are continuing their studies, others are graduating, and we congratulate them and wish them luck.

And for those still slugging away at their graduate degrees, all the best.

colloquium earlier in the year, where Phil Erm invited a member of the BioSciences Department at the university, Dr Luke Holman, to deliver a fascinating paper using big data to uncover the reasons for the lack of women in the science and medicine fields. The discussions we had with Luke were very enlightening.

Senior Common Room President’s Report

2017 was an exciting year for the Senior Common Room (SRC), with victories on the field and in the classroom!

As I write, the SCR has just won their second match of the year in the fiercely competitive Tutors vs Students soccer match. Umpired admirably and fairly (we like to think!) by Dr Sergio Fabris, the biannual match is one of our favourite events of the year. Of course, this should not diminish the talent of our team of tutors in other aspects of the sporting arena: Seconds footy and Chicks’ footy, to name a couple.

Our year started off as happily as we finished it, with a trip down to Lord Somers camp with the freshers during O-Week. This was a great chance for the old hands to meet the new tutors this year: among them Kelly Soderstrom, who tutors politics, Phil Erm, who tutors biology, Al Harkness, who tutors physics, Mikaela Prentice, who tutors architecture, Jack Lewis in finance and Apay Balachandra in medicine. Through playing beach games with the freshers,

judging their fashion contest and a cheeky wine or two at some of the Mornington Peninsula’s finest wineries, our rag-tag group of tutors formed a close community.

This bond was strengthened through many High Table dinners and a myriad of other events. The MCR/SCR Cocktail Night and the SCR Dinner were particular successes. The Cocktail Night saw our social convenors, Mitch Anderson and Lachlan McIntosh, design some stunning drinks to be served throughout the night, where everyone dressed up and had a lovely time. As ever, our Progressive Dinner featured some delicious meals cooked by the tutors – although a highlight was pre-dinner drinks at Barbara and Colin’s house, where Barbara gave us her smoked salmon dip recipe that many of us had admired for some time!

Academically, our tutors have convened a huge number of tutorials at the College, and have really enjoyed getting to know all the students. We also had a

We will soon be hearing a paper by last year’s Pam Todd Scholarship recipient, James Proudfoot, who will discuss his research into a voluntary eugenics program that was implemented in Singapore in the 1980s. We should also congratulate this year’s Pam Todd Scholarship recipient, Lachlan McIntosh, who will use the funds he received to travel to Oxford to discuss his research into using maths to understand the DNA of cancer cells (particularly testicular cancer cells). We would be remiss not to also congratulate Ryan Hoult for submitting his PhD in earthquake engineering this year. He will be graduating at the end of the year.

This year we are sad to say goodbye to four of our tutors, but they are all going on to bright things in their career. Apay Balachandra will be heading into regional Victoria to begin his career as a doctor, Kelly Soderstrom will be travelling to Europe to research EU refugee policy for her PhD, Jack Lewis will be travelling to New York to work in finance and Phil Erm will be taking up a full-time research assistant position at the University of Melbourne.

We also say goodbye to Barbara this year, who has been an integral part of the SCR for much longer than any of us have been members! We would like to thank her for her continued love and support of the SCR over the years, and we will miss her very much. Nonetheless, we look forward to an excellent year in 2018.

National Association of Australian University Colleges

The National Association of Australian University Colleges (NAAUC) is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on developing the leadership skills of students who live in university residences. In July, the 49th annual NAAUC conference was held at Mannix College in Melbourne. I was fortunate enough to work alongside a dedicated team that included Hildarian Tim Scott (2013), to organise the eight-day conference.

As part of the NAAUC team, I presented academic sessions on leadership and event management, and organised an amazing race event in Melbourne’s CBD, and the annual NAAUC Ball for the delegates.

St Hilda’s has a strong partnership with NAAUC, and a number of students have attended the conference as delegates. We have also a history of Hilda’s students on the NAAUC leadership team, and I am excited to be a part of the team in 2018 as Secretary. This year, Declan Butorac (2012) also returned to NAAUC, having previously been on the working party to co-host our annual charity auction for Red Frogs.

In the next few years, NAAUC is undergoing a number of exciting changes, including the move to a summer conference and building a leadership alumni group. As we enter our 50th year as an organisation, we aim to offer more to our residence throughout the year in addition to our annual conference. I am looking forward to working with the Hilda’s leadership team in 2018 as a representative of NAAUC.

Another exciting year at the College has come to an end. Much has taken place in the alumni and community space, with new relationships established, old friends reconnected, stories and experiences shared, a suite of events and activities undertaken, and all with the spirit of Communitas ever present at the College.

Thank you to our alumni and community for your contribution to the College throughout the year, which is realised in so many ways. For details, see the Development Office report on page 33.

The following section highlights recent awards and achievements, the sharing of special occasions (marriages and new arrivals), and the acknowledgement of two valued members from our community who sadly passed away.

It has also been a busy and exciting year with events and reunions, and the expanding Mentor Program for students.

Awards and acknowledgements Professor Ian Anderson AO, St Hilda’s College Fellow, was named an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2017.

Ms Fiona Smith AM, College Alumni (1987), was named a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2017.

University of Melbourne’s Vice Chancellor appointed three new Fellows in September 2017: Ms Ali Moore, Professor Sally Smart and our esteemed St Hilda’s College Fellow, Professor Emeritus Gillian Triggs.

A graduate of the University of Melbourne, Professor Triggs served as the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2012 until July 2017. Prior to this, she held the positions of Dean of the Faculty of Law and Challis Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney, and Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne.

The University of Melbourne’s Fellows are appointed in recognition of their achievements and ability to make a distinctive contribution to the life and work of the University. On appointing Professor Gillian Triggs, the Vice Chancellor said: “Gillian Triggs has made a mark over a long career as a distinguished academic in international and human rights law and most recently in her five years as President of the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Her presence will be a real asset to the Melbourne Law School.”

Associate Professor David R Webb (1973) was one of the first male students at the College, and remains in regular contact with a fellow resident student, Professor David Copolov AO (1973).

Trinity College Dublin recently conferred Honorary Visiting Professorship to Associate Professor David Webb and presented him The T J D Lane Medal (“…to a selected Urologist who has contributed greatly to Urological practice”) in recognition of his 30 years of research and teaching Percutaneous Renal Surgery.

Notable achievements Congratulations to Founding Student Dr Judith Brett (1967) on the publication of her book The Enigmatic Mr Deakin, a historical biography of Australia’s second Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin.

Associate Professor Webb has conducted international workshops in Australia, Myanmar, Ireland, Pakistan, Indonesia and Vietnam over this period, and recently published his operative text book, Percutaneous Renal Surgery, a Practical Manual (Springer International).

David continues as urologist to Austin Health, Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre, Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne and the RAAF Specialist Reserve.

David is delighted to still teach medical students, and regularly comes across undergraduate and graduate students from St Hilda’s College.

Dr Judith Brett, an acclaimed political scientist, scrutinises Deakin’s public and private life, revealing a solitary, religious man who found many aspects of politics distasteful and yet this is where he chose to carry out his life’s work. The Enigmatic Mr Deakin is a portrait of a complex man who was instrumental in creating modern Australia and whose contributions continue to shape Australian politics today.

Alumni postgraduate study news Alastair Jones (2005) relocated to the UK in October with his wife, Amanda Judson (2006), having gained admission to postgraduate study at Cambridge University. Alastair is pursuing a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Conservation Leadership and is only one of five Australians to study the MPhil at Cambridge. Congratulations Alastair.

Brent Eichler (2006) is studying a Master in Brewing and Beverage Technology at the Berlin Technical University. As a part of his Master’s program, taught through the joint medium of English and German, Brent completed an internship at a Craft Brewery in Berlin and will undertake a second internship at a boutique brewery in Australia in early 2018.

Brent graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in 2008. In early 2009 Brent commenced a three-year graduate position with Orica before leaving the corporate world in early 2012, when he purchased a one-way plane ticket to Berlin with the aim of travelling and working on the continent, and becoming fluent in German. Today Brent calls Berlin home as he undertakes postgraduate study and furthers his career in the world of micro-brewing.

Marriages Congratulations to the following couples on their wedding throughout the year.

St Hilda’s College past tutor and Senior Common Room President Vivian Liu (2004) married fiancé Jerome Palagyi on 27 January 2017. The ceremony took place at the Melbourne Museum followed by a reception at The Boulevard, Kew. College Principal Barbara Green and her husband Colin Green OAM were among the guests.

Sarah Hughes (2007) and Lindsay Smelt (Queens College 2007) met at the University of Melbourne in 2012. Sarah and Lindsay were married at Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club in March 2017 attended by family and friends from St Hilda’s, including Maid of Honour, Lauren Molan (2007).

Alastair Jones (2005) and Amanda Judson (2006) first met as resident students at the College and were married in Lorne on 26 November 2016. The bridal party were all College alumni, with one exception being Amanda’s sister from Queen’s College. “We’ll be forever grateful for our experiences at St Hilda’s College,” said Amanda. “We are particularly thankful to those who lead us to each other and who remain our cherished friends today.”

College Council member, past tutor and SCR President Pippa Soccio (nee Howard) (2009-10) and her husband Matthew, were thrilled to welcome their baby boy Matteo Connery in December 2017. Matteo is named after his great grandfather, and has the Irish maiden name of his late great grandmother.

Emily Anderson (2001) and her family are currently living in the UK, and welcomed a baby daughter, Elise Rose Gaigner in April 2017.

London reunion, May 2017

A calendar of regional events was also held throughout the year in Sydney, Auckland, Hobart, Launceston, Ballarat, Bendigo and Warrnambool. Thank you to the College community who attended, and for the warm wishes extended to Barbara on her retirement.

Barbara Green hosted a reunion of St Hilda’s UK-based alumni in London and was delighted to catch up and share fond memories. Thank you to Kate Napier (2003), Beth Corbould (2005), Andrew St Lawrence (2007), Damian Kelly (2008), Emily Fisken (2009), Sophie Bismore (2009), Jemma McKay (2009) and James Gray (2011) for attending.

While in London, Barbara reunited with one of our newest alumni community members, Averil Astall (2016), who was the 2016 recipient of the Susan Holmes Travel Scholarship. Averil was in the UK exploring the city of Cambridge and met with Barbara to share stories of her travels.

Young Alumni GOLD reunion In July we welcomed our Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) to a goldthemed annual reunion event. The Young Alumni cohort grows year upon year and it is such a pleasure to hear the latest news on their academic and career pursuits. Elena’s research and presentation to the UN Committee was launched in September 2016 as the WFD Position Paper on the Language Rights of Deaf Children. Elena was on her way to Geneva to lead a workshop on Human Rights for Persons with Disabilities when she died unexpectedly.

Vale Elena Down 1972-2017 Elena Down (1991) will long be remembered as a tireless and passionate advocate for the disabled and deaf across the globe.

Never one to be held back by her own deafness, Elena studied Arts and Law at the University of Melbourne where she won a scholarship to reside at St Hilda’s College. Elena’s strong Christian faith underpinned all her activities at university and in the workforce.

She graduated BA LLB (Hons) in 1997 and went on to became a leading legal expert in developing agreements safeguarding the rights of people with a disability. Elena worked as a lawyer with the Australian Government Solicitor in Melbourne and later in Canberra.

She spent eight years at the Attorney General’s Department, working in Human Rights Policy and Disability Discrimination. Elena joined CBM Australia in 2012 and was seconded part time as Human Rights Officer for the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), where she presented her research to the UN Committee.

Throughout her busy and successful career Elena remained very close to her family. She was a superb cook and loved to entertain family and friends with fine food and wine.

Elena was admired for her sense of style but was equally happy horse-riding in her comfortable jeans.

50 years of College family history Graduate student Patrick Broadhurst is a current resident of St Hilda’s College, studying a Master of Engineering.

St Hilda’s became a co-educational College in 1973. It was originally a women’s College, designed to provide a place of residence, community and academic excellence for the first women to attend the University of Melbourne.

We were delighted to learn that one of the key members of the St Hilda’s College Founding Committee, Sir David Zeidler, AC, CBE, is Patrick’s great uncle!

Tributes to Elena have called her ‘… an ambassador for the disabled, displaying peace, harmony and grace’. (The Age/Obituaries) David Floyd Smith 1928-2018 David Floyd Smith was an active and treasured membered of the St Hilda’s College community. David was the husband of Founding Student, Susan Holmes (1964).

Following Susan’s passing in 2006, David contacted the College with the hope of establishing a scholarship in Susan’s memory.

Following David and Susan’s great love of travel and belief in the power of travel to broaden the mind, the Susan Holmes Travel Scholarship was established, and awarded to the first recipient in 2007. Since then, the travel scholarship has provided students with the opportunity to travel to destinations including Africa, Italy, Sweden and England. As part of their travel, students visit projects and programs that support their academic endeavours.

David was always delighted to hear about the scholarship recipients and their overseas adventures. He will long be remembered as a benevolent and supportive member of the St Hilda’s College community.

Sir David, widely known as Dirk, was a renowned Australian chemist and industrialist, awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to industry, science and education in 1971, a Knight Bachelor in 1979, and a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1990. Born in Melbourne, Sir David attended Scotch College and continued his education at the University of Melbourne, graduating with a Master of Science.

In 1943, Sir David married June Broadhurst, Patrick’s great aunt.

June Zeidler had a keen interest in neuroscience and was a Foundation Board member and Treasurer of the Mental Health Research Institute.

During her role as Treasurer, June played a leading role in securing funding for the Institute’s modern research centre in Parkville.

Sir David and June Zeidler had four daughters, two of whom were College residents and active members of the College Alumni Community – Sue (1966) and Robin (1971).

Patrick’s family connection to the College continues as he pursues his studies thanks to the significant pioneering efforts of his great uncle over 50 years ago.

Mentoring Program The St Hilda’s Mentoring Program for third-year College students, continues to be a valuable experience for both mentors and mentees. We had the highest number of participants this year, and a snapshot follows: My mentor program was very positive; my mentor was always willing to talk and help with any questions I had about my upcoming career in medicine. I gained amazing insight into the medical profession and explored options for my continuing education. Thank you Sibon for all your help!

This year has been my second year of mentoring. It is always good to pass on advice and wisdom that may help someone else. As a doctor, I am often time poor so this year I arranged for my mentee to shadow me at work for a day.

This proved to be a valuable experience for us both.

One key benefit of being a mentor is the opportunity to reflect and remember how far I have come. Often while chasing the light at the end of a tunnel it is easy to forget the distance already travelled and the milestones already met. I have come so far since being a third year at College myself.

We are pleased to confirm that past President Dr Kate Weeks (2002) and her husband Derek Weeks (2001) will join the St Hilda’s College Mentoring Program as mentors in 2018. Kate and Derek attended the College Science Faculty Dinner in September and were so inspired by the ambitions of our third-year students that they offered to mentor in science and business respectively.

Thank you to all our generous volunteer mentors for your time and enthusiasm.

If you would like to become involved, the Mentor Program consists of two one-on-one meetings held over the course of the academic year. For further information, please contact the Development Office, or the College Careers Counsellor.

It was inspiring to see my mentee’s motivation and enthusiasm for getting into the workforce, and rewarding to help a young graduate think about their career options. I found that the experience allowed me to reflect on my own career path both past and future.

Outlined below are some of the achievements across the academic and pastoral care programs.

Academic Academically, the results for first semester were outstanding. These results have come about for many reasons, among these: the capability of the students selected to College; increased availability of academic support offered to students; the quality of the tutors employed and the strong community support provided to and fostered by each individual student.

2017 was a fantastic year for the College.

Students excelled across a broad spectrum of pursuits: academic, sporting, social and cultural. Academically, we again had outstanding results individually and collectively. In the sporting arena, we won the Tickner Cup, awarded to the best College across all sports. It was also a wonderful year for Communitas, with a successful Gala Dinner held in aid of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

In this past year, the College maintained its extensive service provision to support and foster a positive student experience for all College students. The student counsellor continued her valuable work assisting students, while alongside her four student pastoral care support workers were also appointed and trained to assist. Academically, the College re-appointed a part-time career counsellor to assist students in making course and career decisions, and to help senior students in their transition to employment and postgraduate study.

The College also continued to provide an extensive tutorial program for its students, reaching its capacity of circa 130 tutorials per week.

As in past years, I wish to thank the leadership teams across all the common rooms (Senior, Middle and Junior) of the College for providing strong, proactive leadership. It has been a great pleasure working with you.

In 2017, our IT Manager Tristan Lawes continued to maintain and upgrade our IT communication infrastructure and online presence. He also assisted students in their hardware and software computer/ laptop problems. The library too, under James Proudfoot’s management, has successfully provided students with the resources they needed to aid and complement their studies: via an increased online presence, an up-to-date book collection and a friendly and peaceful library space conducive to study.

First year Mentoring Program To assist students in their transition from leaving home, making new friends, living in Melbourne, settling in to their course at university and making the most of College life, all first-year students participated in our Fresher Mentoring Program. One night each week during first semester, each fresher along with six other first-year students met over dinner with a resident tutor from their discipline area. In this informal environment, the tutor gauges how each student is coping.

Matters of concern are brought to my attention for follow-up.

Senior students’ Mentoring Program The Senior Students’ Mentoring Program was again a success. We are grateful to the many alumni of the College who generously gave their time to meet with our senior students, offering them support in their career direction.

Career counselling The College re-employed a part-time careers counsellor this year. Kathy Andison provided individual and group sessions to new students unclear about their career direction and subject selection. She also supported later year students seeking postgraduate course information and skills in resume writing and preparation for job interviews and the world of work.

Pastoral Care I have been fortunate to have had numerous people support me in helping students who were experiencing personal, social and psychological challenges throughout the year.

I outline some of these supports below.

Counselling I wish to thank Felicity Rousseaux, who worked as a counsellor alongside me this year and ably assisted numerous students on a one-to-one and group basis.

Student pastoral care workers I also wish to thank my pastoral care team: Tim Chenoweth, Sarah Fusinato, Adrian Oats, Mia Shaddock, Molly Yeldon and Liam Lowe for their dedication in supporting their peers in times of need (many times after hours). I particularly want to thank Tim for his tireless work in promoting mental health issues within and outside College.

Mental health first aid training I am very proud to say that 60 students were trained in Mental Health First Aid this year (nearly one third of the College residents). The training is a two-day course designed to equip students to become more aware and knowledgeable of mental health issues, enabling them to make referrals to appropriate professional support. This is an invaluable life skill for students to use even after they leave College.

Wellbeing Our ever-popular wellbeing yoga class ran early Wednesday mornings during semester throughout the academic year.

I thank Louise Roy for this.

In summary, I thank each member of our College community for making 2017 a great College year and I look forward to 2018 and working with our new Principal, Dr Brenda Holt. I extend my best wishes to all members of the St Hilda’s community for the year ahead, and especially thank Barbara for our close working relationship over the past nine years. I wish her and Colin well in retirement.

Academic Tutors

In 2017, the Student Academic Support Program was again well utilised by students. The College provided in excess of 130 tutorials per week. Student feedback for the College tutors and College tutorials was excellent, with many students commenting that the College tutorials were more valuable to them than the University tutorials. The academic results bear this out with final year student academic results among the best recorded by the College.

During this past year many of our resident tutors have also personally excelled academically, with Ryan Hoult completing his PhD in Engineering, Apay Balanchandra completing his Doctor of Medicine program, Mitchell Anderson completing his Master of Teaching program, Jack Lewis completing his Bachelor of Commerce Honours’ program and James Proudfoot completing his Master of Arts in Philosophy. Our congratulations to these tutors and our sincere thanks to all tutors who made the Student Academic Support Program so successful in 2017.

A Tribute to Barbara Green

The following tribute is the abridged speech given by David Gilbertson QC, at the Farewell for Barbara Green Dinner on 29 November 2017.

In 2000, when Barbara Green commenced as Principal, she was the fourth Principal or Acting Principal the College had had in four years. Barbara was a reluctant applicant for the job.

At the time, she was History Teacher at Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School.

The College was in disarray. The students were unsettled; the Council was fractured.

Barbara had been warned through the generous advice of our neighbours at Ormond and Queen’s that St Hilda’s was not in a good place. Through Barbara’s hard work and dedication – and some valuable assistance from others which I will highlight in a moment – Barbara Green changed the culture of this College.

She had a long association with St Hilda’s before her appointment. In 1975, Barbara took up residence as a third-year Arts student. It was Marjorie Smart’s last year as Principal.

I believe, is her penetrating stare from her position on High Table at dinner time, directed at some poor, misbehaving student. You should all make sure that you behave tonight.

In all likelihood, Barbara will be the last Principal of this College to have known Marjorie Smart.

Barbara went on to become the Resident Tutor in History. She then left College to pursue a teaching career. She taught at Melbourne High School and then at Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School.

Barbara said to me once that Marjorie Smart was a formidable woman. Barbara said Marjorie had an abiding interest in students; students could approach her any time of day or night; she exhibited dignity and grace; Marjorie Smart understood what made a community tick.

It doesn’t stretch credulity to assign all those characteristics to Barbara – especially the one about being formidable. I’m told that on the night the fire alarm went off seven times, Barbara’s reaction on the seventh occasion was a sight to behold. So also,

For 15 years, Barbara was the Representative of the Past Students on the College Council. She became a life member of Streoneshalh. Between 1989 and 1995, Barbara was the Chair of the College Council.

It’s hard to think of anyone who by 2000 was more St Hilda’s than Barbara Green.

So out of drama in relation to the position of Principal, St Hilda’s had found a gem.

In the early 2000s, Barbara began to develop a model of the working relationship with the General Committee of the Student body. Almost without exception, the people that I have spoken to in preparation for tonight’s function have emphasised Barbara’s relationship with the students. Open communication and a mutual exchange of ideas are common themes. That’s true also of a number of other relationships she has had with key College personnel, which I’ll come back to shortly.

There is a building at the back of this College called the James Wing, which opened in 2008. It’s named after Dr Brian James, Principal between 1981 and 1997.

Brian and Glenice James are here tonight. Brian introduced school visits as part of the Principal’s role. Barbara Green took them to another level. She greatly expanded the number of partnership schools. The marketing to attract students now extends widely interstate and to New Zealand.

In 2004, the College Council adopted a Strategic Plan. At the time, St Hilda’s was struggling to attract resident tutors; it couldn’t offer quality accommodation.

There was limited scope for graduate accommodation. Therein was born the plans for the James Wing.

Soon after, in 2005, Dr Elizabeth Dax AM joined the Council as Chair. Liz Dax has been no small part of Barbara Green’s success as Principal. Liz and Barbara had a strong working relationship for the 10 years that Elizabeth was on the Council.

Not surprisingly, it included open communication and a mutual exchange of ideas.

Barbara has actively supported the appointment of new Fellows of the College, many of whom are here tonight.

A good Principal needs good staff.

Another element of the development of this College in Barbara’s time has been the appointment of some exceptional people to assist her. At the risk of offending some, I’m going to name a few.

Barbara expanded the role of the Vice Principal when Jennifer McDonald was appointed. It became a full-time role and included pastoral responsibilities.

The work of the Vice Principal has ably been carried on by Sergio Fabris. Through Sergio and Barbara, the tutorial program has exploded. St Hilda’s has 14 resident and 40 non-resident tutors, conducting

130 tutorials each week during semester.

That is one of the highest among the residential colleges at the University of Melbourne. So is St Hilda’s ratio of resident tutors to students.

Three business managers have provided Barbara with vital assistance in the running of the College. They are David Macdougall, Brian Hardy and Rob Lancaster.

During Barbara’s time, the Development Office was established, overseen first by Jane Harris and then Lyn Edwards. The raising of funds for scholarships is an important part of any residential college.

In the 1980s, during my time as a resident tutor here, when it came to sport St Hilda’s College played in the seconds.

The only intercollegiate competitions St Hilda’s didn’t play in the seconds were those where there wasn’t a seconds’ competition. On Barbara’s watch, all that has changed. St Hilda’s has been in the Intercollegiate First Football Grand Final six times and won the competition twice.

The crowning achievement and the one dearest to Barbara’s heart, however, is netball. In her 18 years, the College has been in the Grand Final 16 times and won it on 11 occasions.

You’d almost certainly see Barbara at the netball games. Someone else you might see there is her husband, Colin. It would be remiss of me not to say something about Colin. In 1983, Colin and Barbara were married in the old College Chapel.

College life, related well to students and has been a tower of support for Barbara.

Barbara’s involvement in university colleges extends beyond St Hilda’s.

For five of her 18 years, she has been the Chair of the Heads of Melbourne Colleges. She has been on the Executive of University College Australia for the last 11 years, and its President between 2010 and 2011.

So, it is with a touch of sadness that Barbara’s time as Principal has come to a close. She will be known as one of the great principals of this College.

Susan Holmes Travelling Scholarship

For many years I’ve wanted to travel to Europe, and at the beginning of January 2017 I got my opportunity. Braving the snow, rain and wind characteristic of the classic European winter, I gained great experiences, lifelong friends and a wealth of knowledge. Studying civil engineering at university and having an avid interest in architecture, I was in awe of the abundance of amazing infrastructure, old and new. This, coupled with the maze of train and tram networks, roads and bridges, gave me a thorough appreciation for all that is possible in the built environment.

With a nine-hour delay, I finally arrived in London in the early hours of the morning.

Once there, I discovered I had to rush to pick up my crucial visa documents before dashing back to the airport to fly out to Iceland at noon. When I got to Iceland, feeling very tired, I stumbled into my hostel for a good night’s sleep so I could be ready to begin the real adventure the next morning.

Morning is a loose term in Iceland, as the sun doesn’t not rise until 11am, setting again at 4pm. Despite the short daylight hours, we made the most of it in this amazing country. With pristine roads and buildings, Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, is a well-designed city. Easily navigated, well-lit and safe, I travelled around the city mostly on foot.

Iceland is home to an active volcanic system, whereby a mixture of seawater and groundwater is heated before reaching the surface. This provides wonders like the Blue Lagoon. Even in the icy depths of winter the lagoon is surprisingly warm and enjoyable. Iceland utilises its abundance of geothermal energy, which produces 30 per cent of the country’s electricity and 85 per cent of heating and hot water.

After leaving Iceland, I spent a few days in Switzerland before joining a tour travelling from Berlin to Budapest (rather, Buda- Peshhht). The architecture in Switzerland was simply stunning! With the winter snow lightly clinging to every branch and leaf, and the sky crystal clear, the white backdrop highlighted the colour characteristics of many buildings, particularly in Zurich. Tram travel was seamless and there were screens showing information of upcoming stops, which saved me from using my stumbling pronunciation of Swiss-German words.

Stepping off the overnight bus to Berlin, I was pleasantly surprised by how cheap everything was compared to Iceland and Switzerland. It was so good to feast on the hearty German food on those cold winter nights. While there, I had the opportunity to visit the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. It was an incredibly eye-opening experience; walking around in the snow with freezing cold feet you gain a slight idea of how miserable the victims must have been wearing minimal clothing.

Onwards to Prague, I felt I had walked into fairy-tale city. Despite the minus 13 degree temperatures, there was surprisingly no snow! The architecture in this city is a beautiful composition of Romanesque and Gothic styles, incorporating many sculptures and other decorative elements into their bridges, churches and streets.

Similarly, the grandeur of Vienna was unbelievable. Listening to the Viennese opera in the Schönbrunn Palace and ascending the steps of the Austrian Parliament gave an impression of grace and strength.

Arriving in Budapest, I was delighted to bathe in thermal waters once more.

The Szechenyi Themal Baths provide natural hot spring waters – a vast contrast to the icy cold air – and beautifully decorated interiors. Despite having to dine on a ‘stationary’ cruise due to the frozen Danube River, Budapest was one marvellous city.

After the tour, I went back to England to work as an au pair for a family in Cambridge. During this time, I immersed

myself into the English culture of tea, Yorkshire pudding and a traditional roast dinner. I spent my weekdays looking after three children aged six, four and two, and used the weekends to explore the United Kingdom and neighbouring countries.

With London under an hour away, and trains running every 15 minutes, I became quite acquainted with this busy city. The tube was a crazy criss-crossing network of trains running every couple of minutes, transferring commuters to the food, entertainment, shopping and sights of London. I visited the Lloyds building which interestingly has all its utilities (stairs, lifts and HVAC systems) on the exterior of the building, allowing open spatial planning and easy maintenance of the service functions.

A couple of trips over the English border and into the ‘wee’ country Scotland, fulfilled my desire to see a Scottish Highland Cow (or as the Scots say ‘Hairy Coo’). I tried many of the traditional Scottish cuisine; some delightful (namely Scottish shortbread and tablet) others questionable (the likes of haggis and black pudding). Diverting just west of Edinburgh stands the impressive Forth Bridge, built more than a century ago.

Spanning more than 2,500 metres across the Firth of Forth, the Forth bridge was an incredible engineering feat to see.

As the weather began to warm up, I travelled with a couple of friends to Amsterdam. I am in complete awe of this city; it is a place that felt completely different from home. The uniformity and uniqueness of the buildings, and the vast network of canals was incredible.

Amsterdam’s extensive bicycle paths thoroughly encourage bikes as one of the main modes of transport. It was fascinating to see the sheer number of windmills in operation, and how the mechanics of the windmill are designed to deliver a product or service. Nearing the end of our trip, we managed to get into the Anne Frank Huis, another overwhelming experience that evoked emotions and insight as to what occurred in Europe during the Second World War. The week before I was due to fly back to Australia, I paid a visit to Rome.

Structures built in this historic city have lasted thousands of years, using engineering principles that existed before science could explain why. Stepping inside the Pantheon, I was simply

stunned by the scale of the building and the magnificent dome held together by a series of intersecting arches. Having a Catholic upbringing, my visit to the Vatican City was a very meaningful experience. Despite the huge number of tourists, I learned a lot more about the long history and core values of the Catholic Church.

I returned home at the start of June, just missing the beginning of the European summer, to the cold Melbourne winter.

Yet, I came back inspired by the many and diverse engineering masterpieces throughout Europe and the United Kingdom. I have made lifelong friendships with many interesting people and feel more confident in my ability to overcome difficulties. I sincerely thank Dr David Floyd Smith for his generosity in memory of his wife Susan Holmes, and for the many valuable experiences that have come with it.

What a pleasure it was joining the St Hilda’s community in July this year to further the work of the Development Office. I am delighted to report that the spirit of Communitas is alive and well, and a way of life here at the College.

This year, the College community farewelled Jane Harris and Joanna Scott Payne, and wished them well in their future endeavours.

The annual regional events calendar provides a wonderful opportunity to visit communities and hear firsthand from our families and past students about their time and experiences at the College, and for the Principal to give an update on College activities. Many special and humorous stories were shared about the St Hilda’s ‘home away from home’ experience and all that encompassed, and was a special time for Barbara Green in her final year. Thank you to those who attended. We look forward to welcoming our community again in 2018 as we introduce our new Principal, Dr Brenda Holt.

The College Scholarships and Bursary Program is the lifeblood for our community and provides opportunities for students who would not otherwise be able to attend, or return to the College.

There were over 80 scholarships and prizes awarded in 2017, and without your support this would not have been possible. Thank you for your contributions to this important program, and the ongoing commitment to establish new scholarships again this year, along with those currently in the development phase.

Three new scholarships were established in 2017: The Barbara Green Scholarship, the Student Club Scholarship and the Felicia Eng Global Development Travel Scholarship.

• The Barbara Green Scholarship valued at $5000 was established

by College Council to acknowledge the 18 years of distinguished service

by Barbara Green as Principal. This scholarship will act as a lasting legacy to be realised through our students.

• The Student Club Scholarship valued at $10,000 is a wonderful initiative by our Student Committee and is designed to recognise those with strong leadership qualities and a strong sense of community.

• The Felicia Eng Global Development Travel Scholarship valued at $5000 aims to provide students who value positive social impact at a global level, an opportunity to experience hands-on work in the field and to meet those whose lives will be impacted directly by their efforts.

Thank you to our College community for your commitment and support through generous gifts, large and small, and the volunteer efforts that are realised in so many ways.

Together, we are providing students with resources and opportunities that could change their lives forever.

2018 will be another exciting year and includes, at the time of writing, a founding students’ luncheon, regional events, a schedule of community and alumni engagement activities, and a variety of new ways to stay in touch and be involved. Academic Dinners Academic Awards Dinner At the beginning of the academic year we celebrated the students awarded a scholarship at the annual Academic Awards Dinner. This College event was held in March in the Dining Hall, where College staff, tutors and the student community enjoyed the celebratory occasion.

Leaders Dinner The annual College Leaders Dinner was held in August, where past and present students who have held leadership positions at the College come together for a night of networking and to share experiences from their time at St Hilda’s.

Marcus King, President 2003 and Dr James McGann, Vice President 2011 were the guest speakers. Declan Butorac (2011) and Clare Parker (2011) also provided an overview of the planning work undertaken throughout 2017 to revitalise the College Streoneshahl Alumni Association. Expressions of interest were sought for the ongoing work to further develop the Association and was met with much enthusiasm.

Enjoyment. Success. History.

Three words to describe the 2017 sporting year, which has been one to remember.

When we first embarked on this journey, we didn’t quite know what we were getting ourselves into. After learning about the forthcoming retirement of our long-serving Principal, Barbara Green, we knew we had to make this a very special sporting season. With a year packed full of 11 different sports to be organised, captains and coaches to be appointed, and teams to rally, it was going to be a fun-filled, busy year.

We were presented with a few challenges early in our role, with a new requirement for all coaches to have a Working with Children Check before being allowed to commence a coaching role. This proved difficult at times, however it is a mandatory requirement and gave everyone peace of mind knowing that our students would be in an even safer environment. After getting most of the administration out of the way, it was time to play!

The first-year students moved in, past students were welcomed back and before we knew it the sporting year was upon us.

Softball and cricket kicked off the sporting calendar and we were blessed with spectacular weather to enjoy the summer sporting season.

The annual cricket Pink Stumps Day was a great success again this year, and provided an opportunity for students to raise money for breast cancer research.

This event, which was organised by the Communitas conveners Ali and Dem, was very popular with students too, so well done all.

Unfortunately, softball was played less this year due to venue hire complications between the Council and the Intercollegiate Sports Council. However, the sport was turned into a tournamentstyle fixture, allowing for an action packed and exciting Sunday.

Cricket and softball saw the first vote count for the year, as we decided to organise a different event to 2016, opting for a relaxed Barefoot Bowls event in the afternoon, which was very successful.

The following sports saw Hilda’s taste our first success, as the men’s soccer and women’s hockey teams took home premierships, as well as the men’s hockey placing third.

To round out first semester sports, we competed in athletics, taking home our third premiership, and in the Rowing Regatta, which again was a successful event with a great turn out. At the conclusion of the semester, everyone went home to recharge and come back raring to go.

Second semester began with the two biggest sports of the year, netball and football. The First’s footy was plagued with injury and an absence of players, and unfortunately didn’t perform as well as they would have liked. However, the Second’s footy carried the mantle, taking home our fourth premiership for the year, in a dominating performance.

The netball was exciting as always, with our Seconds falling short in the finals, but our Firsts winning the championship in an absolute thriller of a game in extra time, rounding out our fifth and final premiership for the year.

The second vote count for the year was also held for netball and football, as we decided to make this a more formal event than the last, which was a hit with the students.

The final sports of the year saw Hilda’s make the podium various times, with a second place for women’s swimming and third place in both basketball teams and tennis. All of this success throughout the year meant that we were presented with the Tickner Cup, which is awarded to the best overall performing College in sports.

In addition, we were awarded joint winners of the Holmes Shield for women’s sport along with Trinity College and Ormond College.

These significant sporting awards are a great achievement for St Hilda’s College and a testament to the commitment of all involved.

We felt this was a fitting end not only for our year, but also to Barbara’s amazing time with us and her commitment to sport, giving students the opportunity to play and always emphasising the positive impact sport can have.

We would like to say thank you to everyone involved in sport this year, especially the coaches and captains who worked alongside us, committing to their roles above and beyond. This made our job so much easier, and for that we can’t thank you enough.

College play – 9 to 5 The Musical This year St Hilda’s College presented 9 to 5 The Musical, a comical and empowering story about three working women navigating their ‘sexist, lying, egotistical, bigot’ of a boss, to climb the professional ladder.

The show ran smoothly thanks to the help of our dedicated backstage team.

As a production team, choosing 9 to 5 The Musical, felt like the perfect choice to showcase the musical and acting talents of our College. Auditions and rehearsals began early in the first semester, bringing together a talented cast and band ready to work from ‘9 to 5’.

Taking on the role of conveners was rewarding, but it had its challenges.

One of the biggest challenges was having to change the allocated theatre date because it clashed with St Hilda’s Day!

Fundraising was a crucial part of our role, and with the support of the College Administration and College Club, we were able to produce an amazing show.

The Bunnings barbecue fundraiser was a huge success and lots of fun. This year we introduced two new events - a footy tipping competition and a raffle, and a raffle of a five-kilogram box of chocolates, kindly donated by Cadbury, as the prize.

We would like to thank the volunteers, the kitchen staff and Brunswick Bunnings for all their help.

Special thanks must go to Barbara and Colin for their support for our show and past shows, enabling us to continue putting on a musical every year.

This year our first challenge as Music Convenors was rebranding what was previously known as Open Turn into the live music event ‘Hilda’s Fest’, which was held at The Worker’s Club with a festival-inspired theme. This event was a great opportunity for students to perform in one of Melbourne’s most popular music venues. Seven acts took to the stage, including an alumni band and a DJ, with the event a sell-out success. We would like to thank the General and Cultural Committees for helping us achieve such a fantastic musical event, we couldn’t have done it without you, and to the Hildarians, past and present, who supported us by attending.

One of the music highlights of the year for music was winning the ICAC Battle of the Bands competition – a momentous occasion for the College as it was the first time!

We also organised some live music for FSB 2.0 and 3.0, to create more opportunities to showcase the incredible array of talent we had this year.

Music Night and Variety Night ran smoothly, benefitting from the purchase of new music equipment. We also have plans to purchase a keyboard, which will make these events much easier to run in future years. College Ball Report

We were proud to have raised $1,000 for the Australian Marine Conservation Society, in support of their wonderful environmental work.

On the night of 9 August, the San Remo Ballroom was transformed into a floral wonderland for our Florabotanica Ball.

The sustainable decorations and table centrepieces, hand made of recycled wine bottles, fresh flowers and hessian, looked stunning. These decorations were the result of a labour-intensive project that would not have been possible without our Ball Committee who helped the theme come to life.

As the guests enjoyed their entrée, they were entertained with live music by student Josh Huang. Showcasing some of our very own college talent during dinner proved to be very popular, and was a break from the traditional Ball outline of entrée, main, dessert and dancing. After the meal, the dance floor came to life while the DJs songs flowed. Though a big task at hand, we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to organise one of the most anticipated events of the year and to see everyone having an amazing night.

We were also proud to have raised $1,000 for the Australian Marine Conservation Society, in support of their wonderful environmental work.

Communitas Committee

The Communitas Committee had a busy and exciting year, full of fundraising, fresh ideas and fun activities for everyone at St Hilda’s College. We started off in 2016 with our first afternoon tea, raising money for UNHCR, an agency supporting refugees worldwide. Many a scone was eaten that day, in late spring, as was many a water balloon thrown! As a new addition, we began selling water balloons, with all money raised also donated to UNHCR, which in total amounted to $700.

After a long summer break we jumped straight back in, continuing the popular Pink Stumps Day for the McGrath Foundation. We hosted an afternoon tea for the College, bringing out the pink cricket gear to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, and through this raised $110 for the foundation.

Our next fundraising event was Relay for Life, this year held in Boroondara. The day was truly a fabulous success, bringing many new and old Hildarians closer for a fantastic cause, raising over $1800 for the Cancer Council.

This year, the blood drive was handled by our wonderful committee members, Thomas Bailey and Alexander Cain.

This dynamic duo garnered support from the College residents and booked ample appointment times. Through these efforts, the College has donated enough blood to help save 147 lives!

Finally, Gala Night. This year we supported the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), a flying ambulance service helping to provide care to thousands of Australians across our vast country. On the night, we heard from representative Cassie Moore about the

incredible work the RFDS does. Along with this, we were lucky enough to hear from parent and recent patient of the RFDS, Ross Johns, who spoke about how the organisation saved his life. Finally, we heard from Hayden Richards, the first Communitas convenor, who created the Gala Dinner 18 years ago. He spoke nostalgically of this first dinner and Principal Barbara Green’s influence in bringing Gala Dinner to popularity.

We raised $14,155 for the RFDS at the 2017 Gala Dinner, and we owe its success to the hard work of our committee, the staff of St Hilda’s College, the residents and of course to our attendees. We would like to thank everyone who attended the Gala Dinner and helped throughout the year, and everyone who has shown the power of Communitas.

One might argue that receiving the Certificate of Occupancy, allowing students to move into Accommodation Block D, 22 hours prior to them doing so, is excellent planning.

I agree that excellent planning was involved, but this timeframe provided significant stress as we awaited the arrival of new students on Sunday.

This report traditionally tells the story of what has been happening in the College facilities and grounds over the past year, but during the summer of 2016-17, we embarked on possibly the biggest building project over this period in the College’s history. Block D is our largest accommodation block with four levels and, prior to its refurbishment, contained 44 student rooms.

The refurbishment project was the sole focus of the College’s small maintenance team over summer. Notwithstanding some late hiccups which contributed to late receipt of the Certificate of Occupancy, this significant project was completed in 78 days.

In completing the project: • 50 student rooms were completely refurbished, including the creation of six new rooms.

• 28 ensuite bathrooms were created, replacing the six communal bathrooms.

• 12 independent ensuite rooms were created.

• 60 double glazed windows and 50 new doors and door frames were installed.

• The building received new plumbing, electrical, floor coverings, fire services, furniture and window coverings.

As Barbara’s tenure at St Hilda’s draws to a close, it is an opportunity to reflect on how the College has changed physically during the past 18 years. The building and maintenance program will certainly be a legacy of Barbara’s time at the College.

Many readers will be better placed than me to recall all of these changes, but some of the individual highlights include the addition of the Brian James Wing, the Miller Academic Centre and the complete re-fit of the kitchen. Perhaps transcending the individual projects, has been the philosophy of continuous improvement.

• Two new automatic sliding entry doors were installed.

Key objectives when considering the College infrastructure include continuing to increase the level of comfort and amenity for its residents and creating a welcoming physical environment.

Importantly, this was achieved with no injuries to workers. We had as many as 48 tradesmen working together at the one time, on a very harmonious worksite and with regular congenial communication with our neighbours.

A cyclical program of development of all accommodation areas has been established to meet these objectives, and the significant work done over summer in Block D highlights the College’s approach to improving the amenities for its students.

The College’s small but impressive grounds are again looking spectacular at this time of year, as we look to embark on new building projects over this summer and beyond.

As Barbara departs the College as a staff member, I wish her well in retirement and look forward to welcoming her back as a guest to enjoy the continuing improvement of the College’s facilities, which increased in momentum under her watch.

Critical to the project’s success was the efforts and commitment of the College’s Maintenance Engineer, Chris Tyson, who directly managed the project. The College also has a loyal band of contractors who have supported St Hilda’s over a long period of time and was also central to the project’s success.
