For this reason, we are very grateful to our donors who have supported the Annual Appeal and who have generously provided the funds that will enable us to award five new scholarships in 2016. These scholarships will make a real difference to the recipients, providing them with the opportunity to access all that the College has to offer in terms of academic and pastoral support, participation in a rich and varied co-curricular program, access to professional mentors, leadership training and careers advice.

Throughout 2015, the College has also benefitted significantly from the presence in the College community of a number of visiting academics, who have enthusiastically engaged with students, tutors and staff.

Principal’s Report

As the year draws to a close, it is time to say goodbye to departing students and to wish them well for the future.

I have particularly enjoyed attending a number of graduation ceremonies in recent weeks and sharing that occasion with our latest group of graduates.

Welcome to the 2015 edition of The Chronicle. We hope that you like its new look and that you enjoy our reports and photographs, which capture the spirit and essence of St Hilda’s achievements and activities in 2015.

As I write, we are concluding the selection interviews of applicants who are hoping to join the St Hilda’s College community in 2016. This is a special time of the year when the Vice Principal and I work with select members of the Student Club to meet and get to know our applicants. Those applicants who are successful will bring to the College energy and enthusiasm for the next stage in their lives.

Already, they have been actively involved in their school and local communities, have co-curricular interests in the arts and sport and have demonstrated significant academic success.

Unanimously, they comment that they have selected St Hilda’s because the spirit of Communitas has been strongly apparent in their visits to the College and in their conversations with both the staff and students of St Hilda’s.

The selection of Communitas as the motto of the College was an inspired choice by our founders. It remains as relevant now as it was in 1964, and continues to underpin all that we do.

Students, staff and alumni all contribute to the growth and strength of our experience of Communitas. During 2015, we have observed this on many occasions – as we celebrated the academic achievements of members of the College, as members of the audience at the College production, as we supported College sportsmen and women and as we recognised our responsibilities to the other communities to which we belong and to which we directed our community service efforts. The annual student selection process also reveals that many students who aspire to join the College and to experience Communitas struggle to do so because they do not have the financial means.

I would like to finish by acknowledging the many contributions made to St Hilda’s during 2015 by the Student Club, Middle and Senior Common Room members, by members of staff and, importantly, by members of the College Council. Members of the College Council bring significant expertise to the deliberations that are critical to the College as an organisation, managing its priorities and planning for its future.

There will be a number of changes of Council membership as we move into 2016. We are preparing to acknowledge the contribution made to the College by two retiring members of the College Council. Associate Professor Elizabeth Dax AM has been the Chair of the Council for 10 years and I wish to acknowledge her wonderful and generous service to the College.

I also wish to acknowledge the contribution made to the Council by the Hon. Justice James Judd, who has also indicated his intention to retire from the Council after eight years of membership.

I am confident that the College is strategically placed to meet its ongoing challenges.

Chair of Council’s Report

The College will continue to support predominantly students from outside Melbourne. Significant fundraising is needed for two priority areas: scholarships and expansion of the accommodation on offer.

Why is St Hilda’s College so successful in attracting excellent students who now have so many accommodation options?

Every year, we have many more applications than vacancies. We also have intense competition from other colleges and now from mushrooming budget student accommodations.

Of course, St Hilda’s offers much more.

For our predominantly country students, our College offers a safe, nurturing transition into university life. The Council aims to assure care for all students’ academic, practical and emotional well-being needs through strong pastoral care, tutoring and mentoring.

The Council is pleased with the vigilance and dedication of senior management to our students’ welfare. We are grateful for their efforts and extraordinarily efficient management of the College.

We greatly appreciate the valued service of departing Council members: The Hon. Justice James Judd (eight years and a College Fellow), Mr Simon Herd (three years and Chair of the Fundraising Committee), Ms Mia Wisniewski, student representative on Council, and Ms Melanie Erwin, Senior Common Room representative on Council, both of whom contributed insights from the students’ and resident tutors’ perspective that influenced many Council decisions.

During 2015 we were delighted to welcome Mr David Gilbertson QC (1985) and Mr Matthew Liston, who bring to the Council extensive expertise in their respective fields of law and property investment. These changes, along with my pending resignation from the Chair, will renew the Council. I am confident the College is strategically placed to meet its ongoing challenges.

The College has been very fortunate to have received five new scholarships this year to support students who could otherwise not attend St Hilda’s. We thank all our donors, and particularly recognise the generous support of the Miller Family. I thank the Deputy Chair, Dr Philippa Soccio, for her assistance and support to the Chair’s role. Indeed, I thank all fellow Councillors for their support.

The Council is indebted to its skilled advisors for their unstinting support, particularly to Andrew Miller for advice on the College reserves used for funding scholarships. In governance, the College is also well placed and the Council continues to work to finalise its incorporation.

Thanks go to all who have made my decade on the Council so rewarding.

I particularly want to thank Barbara Green, Principal, with whom I have had a most productive working relationship and for whom I have great admiration.

Vice Principal’s Report

In 2015, St Hilda’s students displayed their many talents across all spheres of College life; academic achievement, sporting and community.

Academically, the results to date have been among the very best on record, with students gaining a second class honour (or better) across nearly 70% of their subjects. To this end, we had a fantastic team of tutors delivering a comprehensive tutorial program across all year levels.

Three resident tutors completed their PhDs in this past year. Two have had their degrees conferred and it was a pleasure attending their award presentations. It’s a source of great pride to all members of our academic community to have individuals achieve this award of distinction.

This year saw the successful implementation of the Senior Students’ Mentoring Program. We are grateful to the many alumni of the College who generously volunteered their time to meet with our senior students and guide them in their career exploration and direction. Twelve students participated in this pilot program.

We had a fantastic team of tutors delivering a comprehensive tutorial program.

The transition from adolescence to adulthood provides many challenges, some psychological. I wish to thank Linda Russell, a psychologist in private practice, and Amy Vanlangenberg, from the University Counselling and Psychological Service, for assisting me in the provision of pastoral care to our students.

I also wish to thank the leadership teams across all the common rooms of the College for providing strong, proactive leadership and always being open to talk with me about matters of concern. It has been a great pleasure working with you.

This past year saw our Information Technology Manager, Tristan Lawes, successfully implement a new College digital phone system, and our College Librarian, James Proudfoot, streamline the library’s data management systems.

Both these projects facilitate better service delivery to members of our community.

It has again been a great privilege for me to be part of such a vibrant community.

I look forward with anticipation to 2016 and extend my best wishes to all members of the St Hilda’s community for the year ahead.

Business Manager’s Report

I am delighted to present the Business Manager’s Report for 2015.

It has been another busy year at St Hilda’s College, as we continue to upgrade and improve the facilities for our students. Although we have limited space, we are confident this space is utilised discerningly.

Continuous improvement is a key mantra of the College, and over the summer of 2014/15 it was B Block’s turn to receive a transformation. All rooms were stripped back and refurbished with new desks, beds, chairs, carpet, cupboards and pin boards.

This was completed as part of the College’s cyclical refurbishment plan and the first-year students who moved in on Welcome Sunday were very impressed!

Security, safety and sustainability are also central to ‘who we are’.

Although not particularly awe-inspiring, we upgraded electrical switchboards and replaced 37 windows in student rooms, which will assist with insulation, noise reduction and safety.

In relation to sustainability, we have constructed a rubbish and recycling compound, which enables us to more closely monitor the recycling habits of the College. We have also constructed a new bike storage area, which is designed not only to encourage students to bring their bikes to College, but also to provide a more secure area to house them.

A bright blue water bubbler can also now be found in the front quad. Although this is a minor addition to the College, it was constructed with the aid of our summer student workers, who painstakingly dug the large hole to run the power and water, in Melbourne’s 40-degree summer heat!

Many former students will remember, I hope fondly, the experience of working with the College’s Maintenance Engineer and sub-contractors during the summer.

The diligence of these summer student workers and of the College’s staff underpins the high standard we set for the facilities we provide for our students.

First semester also saw an increase in the Pastoral Care system with a talks program being implemented, allowing anonymous feedback to be fed back through students for discussion about important issues that had arisen from the start of the year. For something special in first semester, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of Anzac Day with our own service at College, which was held in the Front Quad, an addition to the calendar that we hope will carry on in future years.

We had a wonderful turnout of students, staff and even alumni and their children!

Junior Common Room President and Vice President’s Report

This has been another amazing year for the Student Club. It has been a whirlwind ride for us and we can’t believe how quickly 2015 has flown by.

Who would have thought it’s been over a year since Ben and Zoe (last year’s president and vice president) came to knock on our doors to give us truly life changing news. Once we heard the news of our election, we weren’t allowed to know whom we would be working with, but at the post-election event we knew we would make a great team.

We started the year with a successful orientation week – ‘SuperherO-Week ’– introducing 99 new first years into the college. Welcomed by 12 enthusiastic O-Week leaders, the aim of the week was to familiarise the first years into their new environments and introduce them into the well-known St Hilda’s motto of Communitas. The week was jam-packed with a wide range of activities, from an Amazing Race around the city to early

morning wake-ups and formal dinners, and we were able to unite the fresher cohort and successfully introduce them into the St Hilda’s College community. Highlights included random acts of kindness between pairs at Toga Turn and hilarious dance moves.

Luckily for our freshers this year, they all passed the fresher exam and were able to successfully transition into university and college life. We’d like to thank the rest of our O-Week leader team for their amazing work and enthusiasm. We couldn’t have asked for a better team.

With the inclusion of our returning students, first semester began with our Commencement Dinner, and the River Cruise organised by Justin was a success, with everybody having a great time. Then all the girls had a sleepover, while the boys created their own casino, which was to be the first inter-year college-bonding event. Finally, we ended the semester with a whole college trip to Bounce and Music Night, which showcased the hidden talents of St Hilda’s students from all years.

After a relaxing holiday and the introduction of the fresh freshers, second semester kicked off with one of our favourite nights of the year, Christmas in July. We were lucky enough to be graced with the presence of Santa and his elves, and after the giving of presents everyone was in a more than merry mood. The pace continued with one of the biggest event on the St Hilda’s Calendar, the Hilda’s Ball.

The Ball committee this year did a great job, with the event generating a small profit and everyone having an amazing night. The week following was also no exception, with the Communitas Gala night raising more than $13,000 for our chosen charity, Red Frogs. Red Frogs are a massive support to St Hilda’s Student Club, and we’re so thankful we can give back to them in this way.

The anticipation started to build for the biggest day of the year for any St Hilda’s student – HILDA’S DAY! Despite Justin injuring his knee in a football match only a week earlier, Hilda’s Day was a massive success. From Krispy Kreme’s and fairy bread in the morning, to a bucking bull and karaoke in the afternoon, this is a day that will remain in the memory of St Hilda’s students for many years to come. We then both changed our hats and carried on the tradition of ‘starring’ in the College play, The Wedding Singer.

You may have noticed us slow dancing right up the back in some scenes. Despite the many hiccups with the play this year, including the men’s and women’s basketball grand finals conflicting with the opening night performance, we managed to defy the odds and pull off one of the best College plays of the year, and win the men’s basketball grand final!

The year finally round to a close after Variety Night and Sports Dinner, celebrating the diversity and achievements of our College. As third years, we were also excited to celebrate Valedictory Day one last time together, celebrating what it really means to be a Hildarian. From a bowling match in the morning to barefoot lawn bowls and a limo ride in the afternoon, every third year is sure to look back on their last few weeks at St Hilda’s with fond memories.

For something special in first semester, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of Anzac Day with our own service at College, an addition to the calendar that we hope will carry on in future years.

St Hilda’s this year was also successful in winning the Tickner Cup, the most prestigious sporting trophy on the crescent. This is due to our overall sporting success, including grand final wins in girl’s rowing, boy’s first cricket, girl’s second netball and boy’s basketball – with numerous other grand final appearances.

Culturally, we came fourth in the Intercollegiate Activities Council (ICAC) with successful participation in Battle of the Bands, theatre sports, debating and the fresher dance off. We are both so proud of St Hilda’s participation in events this year, we couldn’t have asked for more Communitas spirit.

The roles of President and Vice President have been both challenging and rewarding for both of us. We’ve been able to see how the College works from a different perspective, and have an appreciation of the organisation needed to successfully run a place like St Hilda’s College. We’d like to thank all the people who had a leadership role within the college this year, who have continued to surpass our expectations every day. We’d also like to thank College administration, particularly Barbara and Sergio, for their on-going support and advice.

We had the privilege this year of leading one of the most amazing General Committees. Though we are very diverse and somewhat opinionated in nature, we managed to get through the year without too many hiccups.

Together, we’ve managed to organise many special events, as well as maintaining the everyday tasks it takes to keep a college like St Hilda’s together.

Thanks for a great year guys, you know how hard we hit it.

Our past three years at St Hilda’s have been some of the best of our lives, and the friendships and experiences we have fostered here have shaped who we will be in the future. We couldn’t have asked for a better College, and the Communitas spirit will live on in the both of us for the rest of our lives.

Student Club Directors

Social Director - James Wortmann This year I was lucky enough to be elected to the role of social director in the St Hilda’s General Committee, and what a year it was. I had the pleasure of organising events such as the Chicks and Casino night, which turned out to be a great night for everyone involved. The social tour in second semester happened to fall on the same night as a popular university event, so although the number of students attending was not the same as in previous years, everyone had a great time.

The highlight of the year for me was organising the intercollegiate event Paint Party, alongside St Mary’s, University College and Whitley College. This experience will provide avenues for further intercollegiate events and an extended social portfolio in the future. Many thanks go to my committee this year, which has successfully tackled any task I have given them, and also to the other General Committee members, who were always there at the events to lend a hand.

Funktions Director - Joshua Grover The college calendar was once again packed with opportunities for the Functions Committee to show its stuff through the organisation of on-campus parties/discos, referred to at St Hilda’s as ‘Turns’. These turns marked special occasions throughout the year, including O-Week, in which we greeted the freshers in style at Toga Turn; to welcome back returning students at the oddly themed Dinosaurs and Cereal Turn; right through to Christmas in July where we turned back the clock to everyone’s favourite childhood characters at the Dr Suess Turn. Personally, my highlight of the year was the amazing turnout to Open Turn – this year held at our local hangout The Corkman – where we were treated to some incredible live performances from this year’s batch of awe-inspiring musicians. We did have some tough times when the staff didn’t arrive for one of our events, but luckily through the teamwork of the committee we were still able to run the event as usual.

I can’t thank everyone on my committee enough for the work they put in this year.

It couldn’t have run any smoother, nor could I have had a better time!

Cultural Director - Amelia Murphy As the Cultural Director of the College, I organised Wine and Cheese Night, International Beer and Cocktails (IBC) and the Intercollegiate Activities Council (ICAC) Showcase. Both the Wine and Cheese night and safari-themed IBC were internal events and added a touch of culture to the St Hilda’s social calendar.

As Cultural Director I sat on ICAC as the St Hilda’s representative. It was a fantastic opportunity to be able to promote inter-collegiality, as well as to help plan and run the ICAC events. It was extremely fulfilling to see the positive impact that events had, with students creating intercollegiate bonds with members of the other colleges. The role of Cultural Director was challenging, yet very rewarding, and it was gratifying to see St Hilda’s presence on the ICAC scene increase in prominence. Unfortunately, we were not able to bring home the ICAC Cup, but we were well represented in almost all of the ICAC events and placed in a majority of them; we were the pool champions at the Intercollegiate pool and darts night early in the year, won our round of debating and came third at Theatre Sports. The highlights of my year as Cultural Director were the friendships I made with the other intercollegiate representatives as well as watching Hildarians enjoy all that ICAC has to offer.

Second Year Representatives

As Second Year Representatives on the General Committee this year, we have had so much fun getting involved in the day-to-day running of St Hilda’s.

This has been the first year in which a male and female have shared the role, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience to get to work together, as well as be part of this year’s General Committee. There have been various elements to our role, including the organisation and distribution of college merchandise, the incorporation of a new event for all years, organising second-year cocktails and – new to the role this year – the organisation of the sponsorship for the Student Club.

We hit the ground running in early January, realising that merchandise needed to be within the walls of the college come Welcome Sunday when all the new first years would be arriving, fresh faced and excited for O-Week. From then on, we held multiple sales for the entire College, with a popular addition being our newly designed beanies for cold mornings supporting the various winter sports.

While Maddie did her fair amount of pulling out hair waiting for various merchandise orders to arrive, Freddie was always ready to offer a calming and reassuring pep talk.

At the conclusion of O-Week, we were both lucky enough to be transition leaders at the Lord Somers Camp weekend program for the first years.

This was a fantastic opportunity for second-year leaders to not only get to know the first years but also offer some advice on what college and university is really all about. Similarly, the freshers benefitted from hearing their designated leaders talk about what to expect out of University classes and assignments, as well as advice concerning specific courses and subjects. This camp was definitely a highlight of the year for both of us, providing an opportunity to shape the year ahead through offering positive and encouraging advice to the first years.

Sponsorship was a new endeavour for us this year, and while it proved difficult, having no previous wisdom or advice to rely on, it was an exciting challenge to work from a blank canvas. We have hopefully started to build a successful structure for future years to raise funds from sponsorship for various activities such as the College Musical, Gala Night and Ball.

Second-year cocktails and our new event, a trip to Bounce, proved themselves successful, with positive reports from students for both events.

While at times the organisation of these events was stressful, we relied upon each other heavily to reassure and calm one another. Similarly, we learnt so much about communication, organisation and time management from both these experiences.

We’d like to thank the whole Student Club at St Hilda’s for the ongoing support throughout the year, and for being such a fun and enthusiastic group of people to work with.

First Year Representatives

This has been one of the best years of both of our lives. As Fresher Representatives for 2015, we were lucky enough to be voted in by the first-year students in week three of first semester.

Being introduced to the College as freshers in O-Week, we were welcomed with open arms into the family of St Hilda’s College. From impromptu early morning runs around Princess Park to going bowling in the city, O-Week bought us all together as a year group, cementing friendships that will last for life.

We quickly settled into our new routines and adjusted to university life with the help of our mentors and students in the higher year levels. While it may have been an initial shock, we eventually found our way around campus. The biggest discovery of the year was the joy of online lectures, which can be enjoyed in bed at any hour. Our first SWOTVAC leading up to exams showed us just how much can be achieved in a single week, with the help of regular caffeine and sugar hits throughout the night getting us through.

As members of the General Committee of the Student Club, we were able to be actively involved in student issues within the College. This allowed us to represent the first years by providing a platform through which their voices could be heard. We also attended many of our sporting and cultural events, of which many first years were involved.

Along with other members of the College, this allowed us to have another highly successful year in intercollegiate events.

As part of our role we sat on the Environmental Committee, and ran our first event, Earth Hour, to encourage environmental sustainability. We organised Christmas in July, the first formal dinner of second semester, which ran incredibly smoothly and was a great night for all involved. Our most recent event was a day full of entertaining activities for all the first years. This allowed us to reflect on our year and remind us of the memories we have together.

When we were elected to our positions, neither of us had any idea how much of a profound impact it would have on our college experience. It has furthered our leadership capacities and allowed us to have a real influence on how the College operates. Both of us feel that our skill set and life experiences have been expanded by the challenging, yet rewarding, role.

On behalf of us both, we would like to sincerely thank the first-year students for contributing to what has been an amazing year.

When we were elected to our positions, neither of us had any idea how much of a profound impact it would have on our College experience.

A huge thank you must also be extended to other members of the General Committee and administration staff for working with us and helping us fulfil our role. We are both excited to be returning in 2016, and look forward to meeting all the new first years who will call St Hilda’s College home.

Middle Common Room President’s Report

What a fantastic year 2015 has been for the 11 members of the Middle Common Room (MCR)! Returning graduates welcomed many new faces, forming instant friendships during our ‘Sl’O-Week’, which included our annual Lygon St Dinner, Pub Trivia and Barbecue.

The MCR has always been a tightknit community, with 2015 being no exception.

From group study sessions, movie nights and impromptu wine and cheese evenings, the graduate students have valued the great support and camaraderie that comes with College life at St Hilda’s.

The MCR has also contributed to the wider St Hilda’s community in many ways.

Many of our graduate students have run academic tutorials this year, in addition to participating in the College musical and intercollegiate cricket, hockey, tennis, AFL, soccer and softball – just to name a few!

Despite being busy with their studies, the MCR has hosted numerous events throughout the year to foster the many friendships they have made with other members of the College community.

The annual SCR-MCR Cocktail Night set a high standard for future events, as well as continuing to strengthen the relationship between graduate students and resident tutors.

Together we have strived to provide a great atmosphere and improve the wellbeing of the graduate student community at St Hilda’s.

The MCR also hosted events for its associate members (third-year JCR members and SCR members), including Bogan Night and Hilda’s Family Feud, which were both a great success.

In addition, the MCR again hosted the longest running intercollegiate event, Hilda’s Haunted Halloween, which included graduate students from Ormond, Queens, Newman, Trinity, International House and University College.

This fun-filled year could not have happened without my fellow committee members. Together we have strived to provide a great atmosphere and improve the wellbeing of the graduate student community at St Hilda’s, and I cannot thank them enough for their support throughout the year. This thank you extends to all 2015 MCR members who have made College life so memorable.

Like every year, we sadly have to say goodbye to a few of our members who will not be returning for 2016.

Congratulations to those who have finished their studies, and I wish you all the best for the next chapters of your lives – you will be missed but not forgotten!

We got to meet all the new freshers and, in particular, the students we would be mentoring for the rest of the year.

On the sporting field, the tutors have keenly participated in College sporting teams throughout the year, including importantly the biannual SCR/MCR v JCR soccer matches. Though the SCR/ MCR team did not take the cup this year, we all enjoyed the bonding experience with the students. I have enjoyed all aspects in my position of SCR President in 2015. The leadership experience I have gained in my role has been invaluable to my teaching career, in working collegially with staff, parents and students to negotiate positive outcomes. As President of the SCR, I want to

congratulate our members for actively contributing to all aspects of the St Hilda’s community, and I can speak on behalf of the SCR to say we are eager to continue embracing the Communitas ethos of the College in 2016. We look forward to the journey that awaits us.

This has been another excellent year for the Senior Common Room (SCR). As tutors, we live and work at St Hilda’s, delivering the tutorial and academic mentoring programs, while also pursuing postgraduate study, teaching at the University of Melbourne or working in our chosen professions.

I can confidently say that members of the SCR bring a breadth of expertise and experience to our roles at St Hilda’s, together with passion and enthusiasm for our fields of study. In 2015, our members greatly contributed to all aspects of the College community, including the academic culture of the College as well as involvement in a range of sporting, musical and social activities.

This year we welcomed a number of new tutors into the SCR community, including Bronwyn Lowe, Llewellyn Green and past MCR member of the College, Gabriella McCray. During the year we had to say goodbye to Dr Geraldine O’Connor, who left the College to take the position of Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences at Chester University.

We also said farewell to John Brown, who will be embarking on a career in consulting with Accenture Technology upon the completion of his Master degree in Mathematics. We also congratulate Dr Ben Forbes, who completed his PhD in Physics, and Dr Bronwyn Lowe, who completed her PhD in History. Our former President, James Kavourakis, also needs to be congratulated for receiving his CFA charter. The other members of the SCR are Felicia Eng, Tim Greenway, Ryan Hoult, Gumji Kang, Thomas McNamara and Adlin Ramdzan.

This year we thoroughly enjoyed the SCR/MCR Cocktail Night and our own Progressive Dinner, where we discovered a lot about each other’s hidden cooking talents. The SCR also enjoyed attending the Somers Transition camp early in the year.

Colloquiums We had two colloquiums this year. First, Llewellyn Green, who is currently working on her PhD in Genetics, discussed the genetic basis of insecticide resistance using the vinegar fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model.

Second, Felicia Eng (above), who is currently in her final leg of her PhD in Mathematics and was also the recipient of the Pam Todd Scholarship for 2014, walked us through a day in the life of a Mathematician in her talk on the role of information in natural disaster evacuation.

Alumni News Disability advocate and women’s campaigner Sue Salthouse (1967) was named the 2015 Canberra Citizen of the Year in March, recognising her work to help disabled women bridge the gap that exists within employment opportunities.

Sue has also been involved in shaping the Government’s roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in the ACT as the co-chair of the ACT NDIS panel.

Alumna Yasmin Allen (1982) was presented with an Alumni of Distinction award by the Faculty of Business and Economics at the 2015 Melbourne Foundation for Business and Economics Annual Dinner in March.

Alumna and Principal of Ivanhoe Girls Grammar Dr Heather Schnagl AM (nee Syme) (1974) was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Education by La Trobe University.

Founding student and 2015 visiting scholar Professor Susan Henning (nee Goddard) (1964) was awarded the Distinguished Mentor award by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) for her achievements as an outstanding mentor over a lifelong career. A passionate advocate for women in science, she was the first woman, as well as the first non-MD, to receive the award.

Founding student Professor Anne Cutler (1964) was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society, for her work in the field of psycholinguistics.

Rowing champion and alumna Charlotte Sutherland (2010) was selected as stroke of the Australian Women’s Eight crew that competed at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France, in late August.

Dr Kacey Williams (2002) was very busy in 2015 doing a six-month anaesthetic fellowship at the Alfred, having done most of her anaesthetic training at Monash. She will complete her anaesthetic training and have Specialist registration in February 2016.

Kacey will be doing a second anaesthetic fellowship year at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto in 2016, starting in January. It is a cardiac anaesthesia fellowship, which will give her sub-specialist qualifications in the field of cardiac anaesthesia.

She would like to work as a cardiac anaesthetist when she returns to Melbourne in 2017.

Ben Hubbard (1992) has recently been appointed to the role of General Manager of Public Policy and Strategy at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers.

Vale The College community was deeply saddened by the loss of David (DMac) Macdougall after a long illness. DMac was the College Business Manager from January 1991 to July 2004 and his commitment and service to the College and its students is remembered with gratitude by those who knew him and worked with him.

Weddings Former tutor Jennifer Moore and fiancé Andrew Greene wed in September, as did alumnus Ian Kilpatrick (2006) and partner Jennifer King in Connecticut, USA. Phoebe Neilson (2008) and Kieran Barr (2008) wed in March in Phoebe’s hometown of Yarram.

Alumni Events ANZAC Day Memorial Service Saturday 25 April To commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli ANZAC landing, the College hosted a dawn service on ANZAC Day for current students, alumni, families and friends of the College. Resident trumpeter and current student Hamish Ander performed a moving rendition of the Last Post on the chilly morning, which was followed by a traditional gunfire breakfast. The event was well received amongst the College community and a similar service will be held in 2016.

Young Alumni Cocktail Evening Friday 7 August After traffic chaos caused by a teetering crane on Southbank gave some guests arrival time angst, it was a delight to see nearly 90 alumni at our Young Alumni Cocktail Evening at Palate in Prahran. Special thanks to Evie Loveband (2012), Clare Parker (2011) and Su-Kim Macdonald (2012) for their superb efforts in making the night a huge success.

Streoneshalh Luncheon Saturday 10 October It was a lovely spring day when the College warmly welcomed more than 30 alumnae and their guests to hear eminent research scientist and founding student Professor Susan Henning (nee Goddard) (1964) speak about her life after St Hilda’s. We were delighted to have both Susan and her husband Dr Vikram Rao in residence as visiting scholars for the week, and were thrilled to have been able to host roundtable forums for students during their visit.

Sydney Reunion Friday 16 October During a visit to Sydney, College Principal Barbara Green hosted a small and intimate gathering of alumni, current parents and friends of the College at The Imperial Hotel in Paddington. The event was held following last year’s 50th Anniversary Sydney Reunion, and we are delighted to advise this will be held annually. It gives me great pleasure to thank the College’s many generous supporters in 2015. It was a significant year for philanthropy at St Hilda’s College.

This year has seen the creation of five new named scholarships. These scholarships will support students who could not otherwise attend St Hilda’s, particularly students from rural and regional Australia.

While it is fitting to celebrate all that has been achieved, it is also important to recognise the challenges.

Some of the gifts have been from an individual and others from a group who have come together to form a Giving Circle. This style of collective giving is very powerful and significantly increases the impact of each individual’s contribution.

Justine has been very active in growing engagement opportunities for alumni and was instrumental in the College’s first alumni preferences survey. It has eased his transition from Warrnambool College to the University of Melbourne by providing both emotional and financial security.

The two music scholarships that Dr Lloyd-Green endowed in a bequest to St Hilda’s College embody two of her many passions: music and St Hilda’s. Dr Lloyd-Green served as a College Council member for nine years and, after a pioneering medical career, she became more deeply involved in music during her active retirement years.

If Hamish could thank Dr Lloyd-Green in person, he hopes that his music, nurtured by his studies, would speak for him. “Words can’t express the sincere gratitude I feel towards her for her generosity, but I would rather show my thanks through actions than words.”

“It really tells me that I belong at St Hilda’s, as well as deserving to study at such a beautiful university,” he says. “And financially, the scholarship has been a life saver!”

Alumni Mentoring

Building Brand Grace Grace Bordin 3rd year Bachelor of Arts

At the start of 2015, a special mentoring pilot program was developed to assist students in gaining an insight into their chosen career before the completion of their course.

The program was offered to current graduate students, as well as undergraduate students who were in the third year of their degree, and alumni were asked to submit an expression of interest to become a mentor for the nominated careers and fields students were wishing to be mentored in. We were delighted to see that the pilot has been very successful and are thrilled to announce that this initiative will become a permanent offer to residents of the College from 2016 onwards.

Career aspiration: marketing, brand development

Grace Bordin is fascinated by questions like, “How do you tap into consumers’ needs?” and “What makes a brand, a brand?” So she was delighted to be mentored by Sarah Green, a brand manager at Schweppes Australia.

Their informal chats ranged widely.

“Sarah gave me insights into her career field.

We talked about how she got to her current role, and what she’s doing now,” she says.

“It definitely clarified where I was heading in the last year of my degree.”

When Grace achieves Sarah’s career stage, she would love to mentor a St Hilda’s student. “It’s another way of giving back to the College.”

Sarah Green embraced the chance to become a St Hilda’s mentor, having experienced its benefits herself when informal mentors supported her early career.

Her approach to mentoring was to have friendly chats that allowed her mentee, Grace, to raise any issues, be they study, career or more general concerns.

“I wanted to be someone who could offer that input and support others in sharing my experiences in my industry.”

Sarah is confident others will find it just as rewarding. “People might think: what do I have to give? But it’s not difficult, it’s easy to give a small amount of time, so why wouldn’t you?”

Discovering pathways

Ruby Grant 3rd year Bachelor of Environments Career aspiration: environmental development

Ruby Grant says when people asked her what she would be doing with her degree, she had no clear answers “and it was stressing me out”.

St Hilda’s matched Ruby with mentor Margaret Browne, who helped Ruby to transform career uncertainty into an advantage. “Margaret has opened my mindset to the possibility of having multiple career pathway options.

That has been a good surprise. I’m very relieved and happy with that.”

After working with Margaret, Ruby now readily identifies that her key interests are teamwork, leadership and working with people. After graduating in mid-2016, she hopes to work for community organisations on environmental policy implementation.

The National Association of Australian University Colleges (NAAUC) is a not-for-profit organisation that focuses on the personal and professional development of college students Australia-wide. NAAUC’s long-running annual national conference has served as a great platform for Hildarians to engage with the wider collegiate community, and the week of intensive leadership training has led many to pursue positions within the College.

Unsurprisingly, the past four generations of St Hilda’s Presidents have all been a NAAUC delegate!

With the success of our Student Club owing, in part, to NAAUC, it was a delight to see that a number of Hildarians later became involved with the running of this organisation.

Margaret Browne finds mentoring for St Hilda’s College richly rewarding on many levels. An alumna of the inaugural 1964 intake, she enjoys giving back to her old college by using her professional skills to do what she loves most: executive coaching and mentoring.

“It’s wonderful to connect with someone who will be part of our future and use your own experience and insights to help them along the way,” she says. “Mentoring supports people to make that transition into the next part of their lives.”

Not only were there four St Hilda’s alumni on the NAAUC Conference Team in 2014, but Ben Murphy and Evie Loveband were subsequently elected the Treasurer and Secretary of NAAUC 2015. Looking back, these students were all proud to have played a part in shaping the next generation of student leaders.

She encourages other alumni to “give it a try”. “Mentoring draws on your own experience and wisdom to help others reflect on where they might go.”

International Susan Holmes Scholarship Report

Lorraine Priestly (2012) was the 2014 recipient of the Susan Holmes Travelling Scholarship. The scholarship was established in memory of Susan Holmes (1964) by her husband, Dr David Smith AM, and assists a St Hilda’s College student to travel overseas. Lorraine, a Commerce student, reports here on her experiences in Kenya supporting entrepreneurship.

Life lessons from Kenya In January 2015 I was extremely lucky to be an international fellow in the Balloon Kenya program in a regional town called Eldoret.

Balloon Kenya is based in the United Kingdom and it creates jobs and opportunities for unemployed young people in Kenya by encouraging entrepreneurship and micro businesses.

Balloon Kenya takes international fellows to Kenya for six weeks and teaches them a five-day program in entrepreneurship and strategy that the fellows then share with groups of young local entrepreneurs.

The fellows help their groups to test their business ideas and prepare presentations to pitch for funding.

My program partner was Andy and our five entrepreneurs were Collins, Phibian, Simon, Gladys and Beatrice. The entrepreneurs were at various stages of developing their businesses and were full of ideas – as typified by Collins and Gladys.

Collins was the most ambitious and energetic. He initially dreamed of starting a construction company, but we helped him set a more achievable goal: selling fruit juice in the small town of Turbo.

Together, we market tested his potential flavours, and he secured a business loan and won three contracts before we left.

Gladys was particularly courageous, and battled serious ill health while expanding her tiny print shop business and completing a Master of Finance.

I learnt many lessons from this intense experience. I realised that the Balloon entrepreneurs were really doing it all themselves – we were just an extra pair of helping hands.

The most important lesson was how to work truly hard on something that you are so passionate about. We worked 16-hour days and got little sleep, preparing everything for these fabulous entrepreneurs, and yet I have never felt so happy and fulfilled.

I am also so grateful for the opportunities I’ve enjoyed through tertiary education and travel. I hope to go back to Kenya to revisit my entrepreneurs, and I still keep in touch with them all.

While we were there, Gladys discovered that she needed heart surgery; the new business became even more important as it would help pay for her health care.

Helping Gladys and keeping in touch since has been the most powerful experience from my trip.

I would like to thank the donor, Dr David Smith on behalf of his late wife Susan, for making my trip to Kenya possible.

I am also grateful for his mentorship and his advice before the trip, that is, to focus on simple solutions to large problems.

I continue to find that advice invaluable.

Maggs Johnson Travel Bursary for Veterinary Science Students

My visit to the University of California, Davis, made possible by the generosity of the Maggs Johnson Travel Bursary for a veterinary science student studying at the University of Melbourne, was the experience of a lifetime. It was my first time overseas (excluding Tasmania) and it was all I hoped for, and more.

I was lucky enough to spend a week with the Livestock Medicine and Surgery team in ‘C-Barn’ under the expert tutelage of Dr Munashe Chigerwe.

Patients included goats, pigs, cattle and sheep. The caseload and exposure to specialty livestock services provided an immensely valuable learning experience for me, as I hope to work in Dairy Practice upon graduation.

Students assumed full case responsibility, and I really enjoyed getting to know some of my patient’s owners.

As the University is still quite rural, there was no shortage of large animal patients, and lots of opportunity to observe and participate in a variety of medical and surgical procedures within the University hospital.

I then spent a fortnight with the Herd Health and Reproduction crew. We had some fantastic days out visiting farms around the district in the University truck. I was able to see and learn a lot about herd reproductive management and consultancy from some brilliant Faculty members. I really enjoyed getting out on-farm, chatting with producers and observing some very large dairy operations in action. I was able to get in lots of palpation practice, and had the opportunity to use some state-of-the-art reproductive technology. I was in heaven!

Everyone at Davis was so welcoming, and keen to show me around. Weekends were spent exploring the Napa Valley wineries, art appreciating and enjoying glorious Californian sunshine with fellow students.

One of the students I met was a qualified teaching pilot, so I even got to fly in a two-seater plane from Davis to San Francisco, right over Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, where I could open the window at 2000 feet to take photos!

On the way home I even got to fly the plane myself for a while over the Diablo Mountain Range! Incredible!

Other activities around Davis included visiting the arboretum, cheering on the UCD Aggies in a basketball final on the big screen at a student bar, stalking squirrels with fellow students, celebrating ‘Pig Day’ at the local farmer’s market, being chased by wild turkeys during a trip to Lake Berryessa, visiting a brewery in Winters, and tagging hummingbirds in Dixon.

I was lucky enough to have a few days to explore a bit further afield after I finished my externship, and highlights included clam chowder on Fisherman’s Wharf, a cable car ride around San Francisco, touring Alcatraz, seeing a wild stag amongst the giant Sequoias and drinking from the falls at Yosemite, surviving staying in San Fran’s most notorious neighbourhood (sorry Mum), and seeing dolphins whilst walking the Golden Gate Bridge. I’m so very fortunate to have had such an incredible experience and met so many wonderful, interesting and generous people whilst in Davis. I am truly humbled and eternally grateful to David Maggs and Lynelle Johnson , St Hilda’s College, The University of California, Davis and The University of Melbourne for such an unforgettable opportunity.

Dr Kretchmer’s support was a massive fillip to Susan’s career. In 1974 he was appointed Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, soon nominating Susan to sit on a National Institutes of Health committee. “The National Institutes of Health is the United States’ primary agency for biomedical and health research, so getting nominated to sit on a committee is one of the breaks that makes a career,” Susan says. The career that followed successfully bridged laboratory research with University teaching. Susan’s particular focus has been in training medical doctors to conduct research that benefits their work as physicians.

Professor Susan J. Henning has a golden rule for Australians moving to the United States.

“Don’t be a wallflower!” she says.

“My father instilled me with the belief there’s no such thing as a dumb question, so speak up in your quest to learn. Susan, who is currently Professor of Medicine and Cellular & Molecular Physiology at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), left Melbourne at the end of 1971 following the completion of a Biochemistry PhD. She departed for Stanford University, where she undertook postdoctoral research in paediatrics. Thus began a successful career in paediatric gastroenterology.

Susan says her Melbourne education was vital to gaining respect as a researcher in the United States. “The University of Melbourne is a world-class institution that provides an education that is second-to-none,” she says.

“The strong Australian emphasis on research rather than coursework ensured I entered American universities with a practical grounding that many of my peers didn’t have.”

Breaking into such a male-dominated field as gastroenterology had its challenges in the early 1970s. “At that time, a lot of women didn’t survive the lab environment because it was run by aggressive, assertive men,” Susan says.

She believes her upbringing ensured she could succeed in a male-dominated industry. “I grew up on a farm on the Murray River, where I was expected to pitch in with daily life and got treated exactly the same way as my brothers, which was a great leveller,” she says.

“I was an Aussie farm girl who was not going to be intimidated, meaning I could always defend my lab results and stand up to bullying behaviour.”

Teacher and peer respect was forthcoming, with nutrition expert Dr Norman Kretchmer becoming one of Susan’s strongest advocates. “Norman could be extremely demanding on his research students, but he respected those who fought back,” she says. “His support showed me I was valued and that I could survive in the real rat-race that was America.”

Susan’s most recent award – the American Gastroenterological Association’s Distinguished Mentor Award – reflects 40 years’ dedication to the field. She is the first non-clinician and first woman to receive this award.

“I’m unusual in the United States because I’m a basic science researcher by background in a predominantly clinical profession,” she says.

Susan credits the down-to-earth Australian attitude with overcoming the politics of academia, where researchers and medical doctors can sometimes clash.“I encourage my students to be versed in basic science and clinical research skills, because having a holistic ‘bench to bedside’ approach means they can apply research to practical challenges,” she says. “I run my labs in a democratic, equitable manner, which is easy to do as an Aussie – everyone loves Aussies!”

Susan keeps in close contact with St Hilda’s College, where she was one of the founding residents in 1964 (and known at that time as Susan Goddard).

Susan was delighted when one of her three sons, Justin, stayed at the college while in Australia as an undergraduate exchange student. “St Hilda’s is great at remembering its alumni and making us feel special,” she says, after recently spending a week there as a visiting scholar. Distance then has not prevented this successful alumna from retaining an attachment to her homeland.

Maths Faculty Dinner Wednesday 16 September

Visiting Scholar, Past Student and College Fellow, Professor Ruth Williams (1973) was the guest speaker at the Maths Faculty Dinner.

Professor Williams is the Charles Lee Powell Professor of Mathematics (University of California, San Diego) and a Member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

While in Melbourne, Professor Williams was working at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical & Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS) at the University of Melbourne.

Leaders Dinner Wednesday 6 May

Ben Hubbard (1992) was the guest speaker at the Leaders Dinner.

Ben has worked in challenging and complex policy and political environments – as Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, CEO of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, Chief of Staff to the Deputy PM and Minister for Education and Workplace Relations, and Senior Political Adviser to the Victorian Premier. He is currently the General Manager of Public Policy and Strategy at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers.

Ben spoke to current and past student leaders and discussed his experience in leadership. He reflected on his own career, and particularly specific lessons from the most challenging environments of policy and government.

Sports Report

2015, what a year! It was yet another action packed season of College Sport, with the biggest highlight for St Hilda’s being the reclaiming of the Tickner Cup, for the first time since 2012.

This was highly reflective of the consistency shown throughout the year, with the College playing in nine grand finals and from this winning four premierships. St Hilda’s placed in the top four of 17 sports, making this one of our most successful years yet.

We kicked off the competition with great strength, the Firsts Cricket Team taking out the first Grand Final of the year. After three weeks of on-water training, and much prior off-water preparation, the Women’s Second VIII rowed their way to yet another oar for the College, which completes the current display on the walls of the dining hall and our second victory of the year.

The Seconds Netball Team breezed through to their eight-point victory over Whitley, the only team they had lost a game to during the season. Success looked even greater in the new A-line dresses, a much needed upgrade for the Seconds from their original bodysuits.

The fourth premiership for the College was secured by the Men’s Basketball Team; enabling us to keep our hands on the trophy for this biannual sport (we were also premiers in 2013). The deciding match with Ormond was played on the opening night of The Wedding Singer – this year’s College production. While some players/performers were constantly changing between their basketball uniform and play costume, the quality of neither performances were hindered.

Despite putting in a strong season, there were some sports where we had some extremely near misses; these included Table Tennis, Men’s Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Firsts Netball and Women’s Basketball.

We hope that with the purchasing of a complete softball kit, something we don’t have, future teams will now have the resources to bring them great sporting success.

The Annual Sports Dinner was held with guest speaker Emily Mannix – the Melbourne Vixens defender – making an appearance. With the announcement of the very deserving Sportsman (Will McIntosh) and Sportswoman (Olivia Douglas) of the year, the presentation of the Rowing Oar and recognition of others that excelled in sport throughout the year, the night was an excellent way to recognise our sporting achievements.

Music Conveners Report

This has been a year of many highlights for the music committee. As music convenors, we have had the privilege of organising with the help of our committee all things musical, including events such as Music Night, Variety Night, Open Turn and Battle of the Bands.

We started the year filled with enthusiasm and decided to purchase a new drum kit for the music room. After much negotiation and hours of browsing and comparing, we found a suitable kit for a reasonable price. Our biggest event for the year was Open Turn, which this year took place at the Corkman. We had a large number of students from the College volunteer to perform on the night; many spent weeks and many long practises to prepare for the night, some spent minutes, frantically rehearsing backstage on the night itself. Music Night and Variety Night were popular evenings again this year, and we were lucky to have a wide array of instrumentalists, ranging from talented guitarists to even a harp player. Variety Night itself had some great comedy acts, one of the more memorable of these being a lip-syncing, dancing group of fresher boys.

Finally we had the Battle of the Bands, which was a special night for all involved, including us, the music convenors, as we all had the opportunity to perform some classics in front of a roaring crowd of hundreds of rival college students. A huge thanks to all of our committee members and to the people who performed on the various nights throughout the year, it has been a great opportunity for us and we’ve enjoyed everything – every last-minute rehearsal, every pre-performance panic, every wrong note, every moment.

College Ball Report

On 12 August the Leonda by the Yarra ballroom was transformed into the whimsical natural setting of Shakespeare’s classic play for A Midsummer Night’s Ball, the most decadent event on the Intercollegiate calendar.

Our VIPs, made up of the General Committee, the Ball Committee and other members of the College who had made a valued contribution to the organisation of the Ball, arrived early for an hour of canapés and drinks at Leonda’s decadent marble bar.

When the rest of the 484 guests arrived, they found their seats beautifully decorated in keeping with the theme of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Each table also had an assortment of trees, candles and decorative twigs to create a very woodland feel. The room looked spectacular and guests experienced a night somewhat like a dream.

Selling out in less than two hours took us completely by surprise, but was a very welcome surprise and affirmation that the Midsummer Night’s Dream Ball was a sought after event for everyone on College Crescent.

Organising the Ball is a unique experience, and despite sometimes being pushed to our limits with stress and small crises, we have all grown and become much better people individually and as a team.

Communitas Committee Report

The Communitas Committee engages in student fundraising for causes that are close to us, as well as organising student engagement activities to encourage positive relationships and feel-good actions within the St Hilda’s College community.

This is all inspired by our motto, Communitas.

In semester one, we created a basis for supporting each other in times of stress with our ‘Easter Bunny’ program, where student anonymously left gifts from the Easter Bunny for other students. The elaborate lengths some students went to in order to set up Easter egg hunts or hide chocolate in each other’s rooms was inspiring.

Our second program was ‘Angels and Mortals’ week, where each student did ‘something nice’ anonymously for their assigned target during SWOTVAC, a painful week of pre-exam stress and cramped study shoulders!

SWOTVAC also saw the return of the beloved afternoon teas, where the Communitas Committee set up treats in the afternoons throughout the exam period (with 3pm becoming our favourite time of the day!).

As has been done in the past, the Communitas Committee collected a gold coin donation at the first of these afternoon teas to be donated towards the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea Appeal. This year also saw the introduction of a new afternoon tea that we called ‘White Shirt Day’, where everyone attended the afternoon tea in a white shirt to support the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation’s fundraising campaign.

Semester Two brought Gala Night, our major event of the year. This year we decided to support Red Frogs, an organisation very close to our hearts.

Red Frogs is made up of volunteers who aim to provide a support network in the transitional period of young people’s lives. The idea started in Queensland at Schoolies, where Andy Gourlay, Red Frogs founder, would hand out red frog lollies and assist young people during the Schoolies holiday period.

Red Frogs has since expanded and will often attend university events across the nation, sometimes providing ‘random acts of pancakes’, where volunteers come and make pancakes for the students!

We aim to run the Gala Night as a cost-free event, so after a lot of planning, collecting donations of goods and services, high levels of stress and a lot of teamwork, we are very pleased to announce that through the auctions and raffle held at Gala Night, the Communitas Committee raised over $13,000. We had so much support from local businesses and our own students and their parents that we are able to donate the entire amount to Red Frogs.
