From the Principal My first year as Principal has afforded me the opportunity to connect with and get to know so many of our wonderful alumni and friends who make a profound impact on the lives of our students. Spending time with you, hearing your stories and understanding your motivation to give back to our college has shown me the true meaning of Communitas. We sincerely appreciate the contribution of our benefactors, alumni and friends who have given their time, expertise and financial support to ensure that St Hilda’s is able to continue to change the lives of our students. As someone whose own college experience was made possible by a scholarship experience, I can speak first hand about the transformational opportunities you have opened up for many young people who might not otherwise be able to join us at St Hilda’s. Thank you for your support of me and our community and I look forward to continuing to work with you as we invest in the next generation of leaders.

A generous community In 2023 I was delighted to welcome two new members to the Board, Dr Felicia Eng and our seventh Principal, Mr James Hardiman. Dr Felicia Eng, BComm (Hons), BSc, PhD was a tutor at St Hilda’s in 2012, Senior Common Room President in 2016 and brings a depth of experience to the board having worked in data analytics, project management, business optimisation and systems architecture. The Seventh Principal of St Hilda’s, James Hardiman BE, MBA (Social Impact) made the transition from Nuclear Scientist to Dean of St Hilda’s in 2020 and as Principal, has led with integrity and good humour. To our alumni, Fellows and friends who continue to give back to the St Hilda’s community, thank you for your dedication, your time and your investment in enriching the St Hilda’s experience for our students and our future.

Developing our students It is an absolute privilege to work alongside our students and to create opportunities for their professional and personal growth. At St Hilda’s College, we believe in empowering students to develop their holistic selves. We provide opportunities for students to not only strive for academic excellence but to develop 21st Century life skills including resilience, a growth mindset, a stronger sense of self and a sense of purpose beyond themselves. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to challenge themselves and to develop professionally through the Hilda’s Headstart program. St Hilda’s Alumni, Fellows and the broader community play a vital role in inspiring our students by providing students with an insight into the working world while mentoring also them to develop the skills they need to become workplace and world ready. In collaboration with St Hilda’s Alumni and Fellows, we host a variety of opportunities, for students to develop professionally. These range from leadership workshops, fireside chats with practicing professionals, public speaking workshops, interview skills workshops and a mock assessment centre. We are grateful that St Hilda’s Alumni and Fellows care and invest their time in the success of St Hilda’s students and we love seeing our students grow from their mentorship.

New scholarships for 2024 St Hilda’s College is very excited to announce a new set of needs-based access scholarships that will be available for incoming students from 2024. The Shayne and Robyn Hateley Scholarships will be made available to four commencing students at the start of each academic year. These scholarships will provide half-fee remission over each successful recipient’s full three-year journey at St Hilda’s College. Each year, two of the four scholarships will be reserved for students who have been accepted to study Science or Biomedicine at The University of Melbourne, with a view towards health or psychology. The two remaining scholarships each year may be awarded to
students from across the various faculties at The University of Melbourne. This scholarship has been made available by two of our very generous alumni, Shayne and Robyn Hateley, siblings from regional Victoria. In recognition

of Shayne and Robyn’s own journey to university and St Hilda’s, eligible recipients must be from a rural, regional or remote area of Australia with preference given to students who have completed their secondary schooling at their local state high school.
Industry Partnerships St Hilda’s College is excited to announce that we are launching a new cooperative industry partnership program, commencing in 2024. Our first partnership is the St Hilda’s College and Northrop Women in STEM Scholarship. Combining residential fee assistance and three paid Summer internships, this scholarship is worth $60k over three years.
Provide access to students by funding bursaries and scholarships Scholarships and bursaries are awarded on a range of criteria including academic results, personal qualities, and financial need. We seek to make the college experience available to all, regardless of personal circumstances. You may like to name an award or join with your peers to start a fund for the benefit of future students. Any donation that is directed to the St Hilda’s College Scholarship Fund will support students’ access. A culture of giving In 2023 Student Club Charity Convenors ran initiatives including Earth Hour, Clean Up Australia Day, Easter Bunnies, Hilda’s Hottest 100, and Angels and Mortals Week. The Communitas portfolio also managed ‘Get Your Life In Order’ (GYLIO) Week activities including yoga, HIIT, zumba, external excursions, staff vs. student dodgeball, study sessions, and movie nights. Fresher Refresher and Returner Cocktails were also arranged in 2023. Walk for a Week and The Christmas in August Skills Auction raised $3,000 for the McGrath Foundation and the Paddock to Plate Dinner and Gala Auction for parents and students raised $10,100 towards Farm My School.

Student Volunteering Dean Fiona Cadorel introduced St Hilda’s to Farm My School, which is a world-first initiative that transforms unused school land into regenerative market gardens ‘farms’ and provides fresh produce to school communities experiencing high levels of food insecurity. The program promotes healthy eating, ecological stewardship, food security, connected communities and empowers students to pursue tertiary pathways into Agricultural and Horticultural studies.

We know that when students volunteer in their local community their sense of belonging and overall wellbeing improves. This year, St Hilda’s students volunteered at Prince’s Hill Primary School in the Kitchen Garden program and for Farm My School. 35 St Hilda’s students volunteered their time, and muscle and spent two days volunteering on Farm My School’s farm located at Bellarine Secondary College. Over two days, St Hilda’s students gained ‘hands on’ volunteering experience on the regenerative farm. For many
students, the Farm My School experience was well outside of their comfort zone and was the first time they had worked on a farm and even picked their own vegetables. The students loved volunteering their time and decided to return to the farm to volunteer each season. The Farm My School partnership is not only about volunteering, it also provides St Hilda’s students the opportunity to engage with and inspire Secondary aged students in rural communities to pursue tertiary education.
