all contributions make a difference

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Owners of the land upon which our college is situated. We pay our respect to all the Elders of Indigenous students who call St Hilda’s home. We also acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members of our community, the University of Melbourne, and the wider world.

I am proud of the growth I have witnessed and been a part of over the past 5 years and look forward to watching Hilda’s continue to prosper.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
A generous community
As St Hilda’s College moves into her 60th year, I reflect upon the enormous support it has taken to establish, develop and nurture the College. The generosity of our community helps place us in a strong financial position and enables us to support a diverse group of students as they embark upon a University of Melbourne education.

The tireless contribution of our Fellows, Board, alumni and friends is humbling. In recognition of their outstanding contribution to St Hilda’s College over several decades, I am honoured to award the Communitas Medal to Dr Brian James, Mr Peter Kempen AM, Mr Andrew Miller and Mrs Jean Miller.
Your contribution ensures that St Hilda’s remains strong and committed to the care and education of our students.
Mr David Gilbertson KC Chair of The Board
Celebrating our diversity
Today 78% of our Victorian residents are from regional and rural backgrounds and our interstate cohort has grown to 43% of our total student population. The majority of our interstate students are also from regional and rural communities. I am humbled to be given the opportunity to lead our community through its next stage of history and commit to working hard to ensure we remain true to our founding mission of supporting, developing and growing students from all backgrounds.
As Principal, I look forward to upholding the values of St Hilda’s, expanding scholarship support and continuing to involve our alumni and friends in the life of the College.

Mr James Hardiman Dean of Students and Incoming PrincipalIncoming Principal, Mr James Hardiman, speaking at the Leaders Dinner August 2022
“Diversity of background creates a College where everyone can find their place and belong. Our regional and rural heartland remains as integral to the fabric of our community at St Hilda’s as when we were established in 1964.”

Ways to give
Connecting with current students, fellow alumni and friends is rewarding for all involved. We are grateful to those who have become mentors to current students, supported the academic program, and attended events throughout the year.
Camilla Humphries (2007) generously gave her time in 2022 to mentor a student, attend an academic dinner and make Camilla’s Crush Red Hill Cider available to us at the Paddock to Plate parent engagement event and gala fundraiser in October. Camilla also spoke at this event and embodies the spirit of St Hilda’s as she gives back to the next generation and volunteers her time.
In 2023 the St Hilda’s Alumni Committee will be re-established to consult on the ‘Towards 60’ engagement strategy ahead of our 60th anniversary year in 2024. We encourage you to reach out via communitas@hildas.unimelb.edu.au to tell us how you’d like to commemorate our 60th, provide news, connect us with your alumni peers or get involved by volunteering your time.

Provide access to students by funding bursaries and scholarships
Scholarships and bursaries are awarded on a range of criteria including academic results, personal qualities, and financial need. We seek to make the college experience available to all, regardless of personal circumstances.

You may like to name an award or join with your peers to start a fund for the benefit of future students. Any donation that is directed to the St Hilda’s College Scholarship Fund will support students’ access.

Please contact us at communitas@hildas.unimelb.edu.au or make a donation online.
St Hilda’s Fellows
St Hilda’s Fellows are distinguished members of our community who have a reputation for excellence in their field of knowledge. They contribute a great deal of time and energy to our students including running leadership workshops, mock interviews, and providing insight into career pathways and professional skill development for employment. In 2020 and 2022 we welcomed twelve new fellows:

A culture of giving is alive and well within the St Hilda’s Student Community
In 2022 Student Club Charity Convenors ran fundraising initiatives including Walk for a Week for the McGrath Foundation, Mullets for Mental Health for the Black Dog Institute, and Dare to Donate for the Starlight Foundation.

The final event for 2022 was Paddock to Plate, a partnership between the Student Club and the Community Engagement Office. Funds raised at this event were donated to ‘The School Project.’ Combined activities in 2022 raised more than $18,000 for charity.
“
Communitas is such an important value for us, and it represents everything we strive to be as a college to better ourselves and the broader community…it’s about coming together, supporting each other, and having fun…
We recognise the importance of giving back to those who need it and realise that as young people we have an obligation to stand up and be present for those who cannot be present themselves.”
