NEWS FROM SAINT HENRY SCHOOL | SUMMER 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Saint Henry Family, Friends, and Alumni,

On behalf of the faculty and students of Saint Henry School, thank you for your continued support of all the Saint Henry Tigers throughout this past year and into the new year. We are so grateful!

During this past year, along with all the Diocesan Nashville Catholic Schools, Saint Henry School was reaccredited through the Cognia Accreditation process. The accreditation visitors noted the strong sense of community and family that is clearly our culture at Saint Henry School. In addition to a solid and challenging academic program, the visitors noted as a strength our vibrant Catholic identity.

We appreciate your support of our projects this past year, particularly our security and outdoor pavilion. We continue to work on increased security both inside and outside the school. In addition to this, we should complete the outdoor pavilion this summer which can be used by both church and school groups.

Our students are engaged in a variety of events at many levels: national, diocesan, and local as you will see in this edition of the Pinnacle. From academics, sports, drama, choir and band, camps, and service, Saint Henry students are out and about testing their potential, engaging in opportunities, and enjoying success:

• Several students participated in Father Ryan Math Day with students from other diocesan schools. They placed 3rd overall as a team!

• In the Catholic Math League competition, our 7th grade class placed 1st in their division, and Owen Stricklin placed 1st individually. Kayla Wehby placed 1st in her division and 1st in nationals.

• Joseph Bowersox and Win Montgomery qualified for and participated in the National History Bee in Orlando, Florida.

• Livia Castrillo won 1st place in the St. Henry Spelling Bee, 1st place in the Diocesan Spelling Bee, and 3rd place in the Scripps Howard Tennessee State Spelling Bee.

We are proud of our young people and look forward to the coming 2026-2027 school year.

The Saint Henry School theme for this year is from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, And the Greatest of These is Love! (1 Corinthians 13:13).

Have a blessed summer with family and friends. The 2026-2027 academic school year will be here before we know it. Please know of our gratitude for your generosity and goodness to Saint Henry School. You and your families are in our prayers.

Sincerely in Christ,

OUR MOTTO Educating for life in Christ OUR MISSION

Faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church, Saint Henry School builds the kingdom of God by forming students in faith, academic integrity, and service to others.

FAREWELL TO FACULTY AND STAFF

The end of a school year is always bittersweet, and Saint Henry School is grateful for the faculty and staff members who have shared their talents and dedication with the school community. As they move on to new opportunities and adventures, the school extends its sincere thanks for their service.

Mrs. Colleen Andrews served this year as an aide in the Pre-K 4 program. Saint Henry School is grateful for her care and support of its youngest Tigers.

Sister Maria Sophia joined the Saint Henry faculty two years ago as the 7th/8th-grade religion teacher. She has been reassigned to John Paul II High School in Arlington, Virginia, where she will serve as Assistant Vice Principal of Student Life and Discipline.

Mrs. Angela Ray has taught elementary Spanish since 2021. With her second child arriving this fall, she has decided to devote more time to her growing family.

Ms. Mary Moore joined Saint Henry in 2021 and has faithfully served as a teacher’s aide, supporting students and faculty alike.

Ms. Jamie Francis has taught 1st grade since 2022. She will be stepping away to focus on personal and family obligations but

will remain connected to the Saint Henry community as a substitute teacher.

Mrs. Kyme Conway has served as a Kindergarten aide since 2021. She is leaving to focus on operating her family business, Thunderbird Social Club in Germantown.

Ms. Becca Lewis joined Saint Henry School in the spring of 2022. Most recently, she taught 5th/6th-grade Social Studies and served as Assistant Athletic Director. She will be returning to New Jersey to be closer to family.

Mrs. Doris Grant joined Saint Henry School in 2017 as Development Director. During her tenure, she oversaw the Development Drive, Carnival, Grandparents Day, and many other special events that strengthened the school community. In retirement, Mrs. Grant looks forward to spending more time with family and pursuing new hobbies.

Mrs. Susan Wesley joined Saint Henry School in 2008. Over the course of her career, she has taught several generations of Tigers—including the children of some of her earliest students. Her impact on the Saint Henry community will be felt for years to come.

Saint Henry School thanks each of these individuals for their dedication and service and wishes them all the best in their future endeavors.

COUNTED AMONG THE BEST!

Students at Saint Henry School recently achieved outstanding results in the Catholic Math League, earning both individual and team honors at the regional and national level.

Among the school’s top performers were Kayla Wehby (pictured below left with Sister John Mary), who was named the National Champion in the 4th-grade division, and Owen Stricklin (pictured below right with Sister and Mr. Ryan O’Hara), who earned the title of Division 2 Champion in the 7th-grade competition. Also in Division 2, Saint Henry’s 7thgrade placed 1st overall. Their accomplishments highlight the hard work, dedication, and problem-solving skills they demonstrate throughout the year.

Saint Henry also earned strong national team rankings across several grade levels, including a 7th-place national finish in 5th grade, 21st place in both the 6th- and 7th-grade competitions, and 28th place in Algebra I. These results place Saint Henry’s middle school among the top ten percent nationally!

The Catholic Math League is a nationwide academic competition that challenges students in mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and advanced problem-solving. Students compete against hundreds of schools from across the country, making these achievements especially meaningful.

A SAINT HENRY LEGACY

Celebrating 27 Years as Tiger Parents

For nearly three decades, Tim and Nancy Hoots have been a familiar part of the Saint Henry School community. This spring, the Hoots family celebrated a major milestone as their youngest child, Mark, graduated with the Class of 2026, ending an incredible 27 straight years of having a child enrolled at Saint Henry School!

Tim Hoots, a member of Saint Henry’s Class of 1977 and a graduate of Father Ryan High School’s Class of 1981, and Nancy Hoots always knew Catholic education would be an important part of raising their family. Mrs. Hoots, who attended Sacred Heart and Knoxville Catholic High School, said providing a Catholic education for their children “was never a thought” — their family was committed to making it happen no matter what.

Over the years, all six Hoots children attended and graduated from Saint Henry and matriculated to Father Ryan High School. One especially meaningful detail makes the family’s story feel full circle: Principal Sister John Mary, OP, was principal when their oldest daughter, Hannah, started at Saint Henry and when their youngest, Mark, graduated this year. “Sister John Mary really understands families and family life, the community, and the power of faith,” Mrs. Hoots shared.

She also reflected on the lasting impact Saint Henry had on her children, both academically and spiritually. “Catholic schools give children a place to learn and ask questions about the faith,” she said. “Parents can feel confident their children have spiritual teachers who understand where they are and who can help guide them.”

Mrs. Hoots praised the teachers her children had over the years, describing them as “faithful, diligent, and genuine.” Even though each of her children has different personalities, talents, and abilities, she said every child felt loved and appreciated for exactly who they are at Saint Henry.

As graduation approached, Mrs. Hoots said it truly began to sink in during May Crowning, one of her favorite Saint Henry traditions. “It really started hitting home,” she shared. “We have nothing but gratitude for Saint Henry and will always look back on this time as a blessing for our family.”

Although Tim and Nancy are closing the chapter on being “Tiger parents,” their connection to Saint Henry is far from over. As parishioners of Saint Henry Church, they plan to stay active in the parish community. And soon, they will experience Saint Henry from a brand-new perspective: grandparents.

Their first grandchild, Charlotte, will soon become a Tiger Cub herself, and Mrs. Hoots is already looking forward to attending Grandparents Day, this time as one of the grandparents joining the special spring celebration she has admired for so many years.

As one generation of Hoots Tigers graduates and another prepares to begin, the family’s remarkable Saint Henry story continues — rooted in faith, community, and a lifelong love for their school.

PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

Señora Carolina Sanchez Celebrates Becoming a Naturalized Citizen

At Saint Henry School, students and staff are celebrating an exciting milestone for Señora Carolina Sanchez, middle school Spanish teacher, who recently became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

Originally from Acapulco, Mexico, Señora Sanchez described her hometown as “a beautiful city on the Pacific coast that enjoys warm, sunny weather all year round.” She shared that her family’s journey to the United States began when her husband received a job opportunity in Houston, Texas. “After a lot of prayer and reflection, we decided to take the leap and officially relocated in 2011,” she explained.

Señora Sanchez explained that becoming a U.S. citizen is a long and detailed process that requires years of preparation before the official application even begins. Applicants must meet strict eligibility requirements, complete interviews and biometrics appointments, and pass both English and civics exams before taking the Oath of Allegiance.

“Our Oath Ceremony took place on February 25, 2026, at the Fred D. Thompson U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building in

downtown Nashville,” she shared. “In that moment, I felt that all my hard work and sacrifices as a first-generation immigrant had finally paid off. Becoming an American citizen is a true honor and a dream come true; I am so proud to be an American.”

Her love for American culture began early in life. Señora Sanchez attended a bilingual school in Mexico beginning in kindergarten, where she learned English. She also credits childhood Disney movies with helping inspire her dream of one day living in the United States. Today, she happily embraces American traditions — and admits that cheeseburgers with ketchup are her favorite American food.

To celebrate her first Independence Day as a US citizen, Señora Sanchez and her family are planning a patriotic cookout with friends, complete with red, white, and blue decorations in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.

The entire school community is thrilled for Señora Sanchez and proud to celebrate this special milestone alongside her as she begins this new chapter as an American citizen.

He enjoys mountain biking, hiking, whitewater rafting, and visiting national parks with his family.

Sister Lucia Christi, O.P. will teach 7th/8th grade Religion. A native of Rapid City, S.D., Sister entered the Dominicans in 2016 and professed her perpetual vows in 2023. Most recently, she has been teaching middle school religion at St. James in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. She loves being outside, kayaking, reading, studying, playing music, and sports! WINTER/SPRING ATHLETICS UPDATE

Saint Henry School celebrated another outstanding year of athletics during the winter and spring sports seasons, proudly sponsoring 34 teams across a variety of sports for students in grades 1–8. From first-time athletes learning the fundamentals to experienced middle school competitors striving for championships, Saint Henry student-athletes represented the Tigers with dedication, perseverance, faith, and sportsmanship throughout the year.

Basketball

Basketball once again proved to be one of the largest and most exciting programs at Saint Henry School, with the school fielding 19 boys and girls teams from 3rd-8th grade. Across every grade level, the teams competed with tremendous effort and determination throughout league play. The 5th–8th grade teams also participated in postseason tournaments and represented Saint Henry School extremely well. While the Tigers did not bring home an overall boys or girls championship this season, many teams enjoyed highly competitive seasons and continued to show tremendous growth and teamwork from beginning to end. One of the highlights of the basketball season came from the 5th–6th grade girls team, which battled its way to a second-place finish in its tournament after an impressive postseason run. The team demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and strong defensive play throughout the season.

Several student-athletes also earned individual recognition for their outstanding performances during the basketball season. Sarah Riley and Reagan Eaton received awards for their leadership, skill, and contributions on the court. During the 7th–8th grade girls varsity season and tournament, Ruth Armour and Cami Gorrell earned individual honors for their exceptional play and leadership.

Track and Field

This year also marked a historic milestone for Saint Henry School athletics with the launch of the school’s first-ever Track and Field program. The inaugural season was a tremendous success and generated excitement among students and families. Athletes competed in a variety of running and field events while developing both confidence and competitive experience. Leo Millican and Gabby Perez had especially strong seasons, earning top finishes in multiple events and helping establish a solid foundation for the future growth of the program. Coaches and athletes are excited about the future of Saint Henry Track and Field after such a successful first season.

Golf

The Saint Henry golf team also enjoyed an excellent year, competing with consistency and composure throughout the season. The team earned a second-place finish in Division II, an impressive accomplishment that reflected the athletes’ focus, sportsmanship, and steady improvement during competition. In addition, Thomas

Hoover, Cliff Ives, Lucy Anton, and Ruth Armour earned individual awards for their outstanding play and accomplishments throughout the season.

Flag Football

Flag football continued to be a fun and growing program for younger Tiger athletes. Saint Henry School fielded three teams this season, including two teams at the 1st–2nd grade level and one 3rd–4th grade team. These teams emphasized skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship while introducing many students to organized competition for the first time. The enthusiasm and energy shown by these young athletes made for an exciting season and highlighted the strong future of Saint Henry athletics.

Soccer

Soccer had another successful spring season, with four teams representing the Tigers, including two 7th–8th grade teams and two 3rd–4th grade teams. One of the 7th–8th grade teams captured the league championship after an outstanding season filled with strong teamwork, disciplined defense, and exciting offensive play. Several players received recognition for their exceptional performances throughout the season, including David Safarian, Vince Shrake, Cooper Shea, and Cliff Ives, whose leadership and athletic ability helped guide their team to success.

Spring Volleyball

Volleyball also had an excellent season this spring, with Saint Henry School fielding five teams in the 5th–6th grade volleyball league. The athletes continued to improve their teamwork, communication, and game fundamentals throughout the season. The Gold Team had a particularly memorable year, finishing second overall after a strong postseason performance and an impressive season of consistent play.

Thank you, coaches!

The success of Saint Henry athletics would not have been possible without the commitment and support of coaches, parents, volunteers, and the broader school community. Most importantly, Saint Henry student-athletes continued to demonstrate the values that define Saint Henry School: hard work, faith, teamwork, integrity, and sportsmanship. Congratulations to all of the athletes and coaches on another memorable and successful year of Tiger athletics.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE Perseverance, Teamwork Define Another Season

Saint Henry School’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams wrapped up another impressive season filled with teamwork, innovation, and perseverance. The “Gold” team (Mollie Donlon, Reed Ecker, Carrie Gambrel, Brynne Keller, Joseph Bowersox, Ben Isham, Reese Kesor, and Dominic Montagnino) competed at the Middle Tennessee qualifier held at Antioch Community Center and placed 3rd overall in robot performance. The “Black” team (Kate Greer, Tommy Tracy, Josephine Zemba, Kate Daigle, Henry Haas, Evie Grigsby, Pierce Sauvageau, and JeremeyJay Whitaker) competed at the Music City qualifier at Ensworth School and won 2nd place Champion’s Award and placed 2nd overall in robot performance.

Both teams qualified for the State Championship Tournament at Tennessee Tech University. However, the historic ice storm that impacted Middle Tennessee in late January prevented the teams from attending the event. While students were understandably disappointed they could not compete at the next level and showcase the hard work they had invested throughout the season, they responded with positivity, sportsmanship, and grace. Embracing the importance of resilience and gratitude, the teams chose to celebrate their successful season together with a trip to a local trampoline park, turning an unfortunate situation into a joyful memory together.

A RETURN TO TIGER TOWN

A Visit Decades in the Making Highlights the Lasting Impact of the Saint Henry Community

Earlier this year, Saint Henry School welcomed back a special visitor with a unique connection to the school community. While in Nashville for a friend’s wedding, Mr. William North stopped by Tiger Town to reconnect with the place that helped his family through one of the most challenging periods in their lives. Today, Mr. North lives in Belle Chasse, La., and works in insurance as a commercial underwriter.

Mr. North’s time at Saint Henry may have been brief, but its impact has lasted a lifetime. He was in the 5th grade when Hurricane Katrina devastated his hometown of New Orleans in 2005. Knowing they would be displaced for an extended period, the North family temporarily relocated to Nashville so their children could continue their education.

The Saint Henry community welcomed William and his sister, Molly, who was in 8th grade, with open arms. Recognizing that the family had arrived under difficult circumstances, Saint Henry families rallied to help, providing school uniforms and other support to ease their transition.

Reflecting on his recent visit, Mr. North shared, “It was truly special to come back full circle and return to Saint Henry. The school has always held a special place not only in my heart but also in my family’s. When I returned home and told my mother and sister about the visit, my mom pulled out an old binder filled with documents from our time there, including correspondence with Sister Mary Jordan. I will always remember the welcoming spirit of the school as we navigated some very challenging times. That kind of impact never leaves you, and for that I will always be grateful.”

During his visit, Mr. North toured the school and shared memories of his time as a Tiger with faculty and staff.

As a gesture of gratitude for the kindness shown to his family more than 20 years ago, Mr. North made a generous donation to Saint Henry School. His visit served as a powerful reminder that the spirit of faith, generosity, and community that defines Tiger Town continues to leave a lasting impression long after students have left its halls.

Mr. William North reminisces about his time at Saint Henry School with Sr. John Mary, Sr. Aimee Marie, and Sr. Maria Sophia.

HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

A Successful Year, New Leadership for 2026-27

What a year it has been! From increased volunteer engagement to beloved school traditions, exciting new programs, successful fundraising efforts, and everything in between, there is so much to celebrate within the Saint Henry Home & School community.

One of the highlights of the spring was the annual Walk-a-thon, which generated an incredible net profit of $82,000. Even more exciting, 74% of those funds came from non-parent donors, demonstrating the tremendous support the broader community has for Saint Henry School. These proceeds will directly support the Outdoor Pavilion Project and ongoing campus security enhancements.

In total, the HSA contributed $217,106 this year toward important school initiatives, including the Outdoor Pavilion Project, front entrance security improvements, athletics, and technology enhancements. These investments continue to enrich the educational experience and strengthen the school for years to come.

This year, one of the HSA’s greatest priorities was strengthening community and increasing volunteer engagement.

As part of that effort, an official nominating process for HSA leadership was established, along with a new ChairElect Program that allows future leaders to shadow current chairs and gain valuable experience before stepping into their roles. The HSA is thrilled to welcome back its current chairs for their final year of service and looks forward to ushering in new leadership in the summer of 2027.

As the school year came to a close, Saint Henry School celebrated Grandparents and Special Friends with a wonderful breakfast while also taking time to honor faculty and volunteers. Teacher Appreciation Week provided an opportunity to recognize the outstanding teachers who bring dedication, care, and energy to students each day.

The HSA also hosted its first Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast since 2018 — a wonderful morning filled with gratitude, connection, and celebration. The tremendous turnout served as a heartfelt reminder of the extraordinary parent community that helps make so many programs, events, and special moments possible for students, teachers, and families alike.

Looking ahead, planning is already underway for Tiger Town Weekend. Families are encouraged to save the date for Friday, October 2, 2026, featuring the Tailgate event, and Saturday, October 3, 2026, featuring the Auction and Carnival. The HSA will also spend the summer welcoming new families and siblings through the Guardian Angel Program, helping ensure every new member of the community feels connected and supported from the very beginning.

The Home & School Association extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed their time, talents, and generosity this year. Together, the Saint Henry School community has built an incredible year filled with growth, connection, and school spirit, and there is great excitement for all that next year will bring.
