Junior School

At the risk of repeating myself – hasn’t the year simply flown? It seems such a short time ago since our gorgeous new Junior Infants and twenty-six new Standard 6 pupils joined our Junior School community. And now those tiny Juniors are very proud and excited to be Senior Infants (almost!) and our Std. 6 pupils are First Years! We wish them blessings in abundance on their journey ahead - they are a super year group - engaged, motivated, friendly, co-operative and kind.

Social awareness is always high on our list of priorities and this term we were delighted to raise funds for the Martin Family Trust – how heart-warming it was to witness the whole school community from Montessori to Leaving Cert participate in the Icelandic Clap – a very special moment indeed. Our Easter Egg Art Competition raised much needed funds for the orphanages in Moldova which Louise visits each year, and Ice-Cream Day raised lots of smiles and money for Down’s Syndrome Ireland.

At their Graduation Ceremony, Standard 6 presented the school with a beautiful work of art which you will see proudly displayed in the upstairs hall. It is a stunning painting of a cherry blossom tree – however its composition and symbolism encompasses so much more than that. Many parents worked on creating the painting and Catherine Murphy (Std 6 Mum and artist!) explained that firstly the symbol of the cherry blossom tree was chosen “as it represents freshness, youth, beauty and spring”. There are 52 blossoms depicted on the tree and each one is made by an individual pupil. It is their mark and made with the most personal and unique of all marks – their fingerprints. And at the centre of their blossom is their initial. I know that the painting will bring joy to all who see it – and I hope that in years to come our Standard 6 pupils will come back to gaze at it, and to show their children, and please God their grandchildren, the symbol of their 12 year old self represented forever in the St. Gerard’s School community.

I want to take this opportunity to commend our wonderful pupils who make each day a joy. Particular congratulations to Ms. Flanagan and the Green Schools Committee, who following a visit from the Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire County Council were presented with a certificate for the Junior School in recognition of our “efforts in pioneering for a clean environment and safeguarding local wildlife” – what an accolade! I also commend Mr. McPhillips and our Student Council, under the Chairmanship of Ally Finnegan-Quirke, who undertook new and exciting initiatives this year – such as the very popular Tuck Shop – for which they bought stock, worked out their pricing, ran the business and made a profit of E167! Entrepreneurs indeed!

Three other very special occasions this term have been the celebration of the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation. Each ceremony was a most spiritual and moving occasion and the children participated through prayer and song and with reverence and spirituality. I would like to say a sincere thank you to our In-House Committee who, following both Communion and Confirmation, organised a wonderful reception for the children and their parents and relatives, which helps to make these ceremonies truly family and community celebrations. Other highlights of 2017 have included – Write-A-Book, the wonderful Standard 4 and 5 Talent Show, exciting school tours to Ziplines and Adventure Centres, a visiting artist-in-residence, the fabulously innovative Std. 6 Science Fair, success for the girls in the Delgany Golf Cup and the hockey leagues, and the term ended with a fantastic Sports and Prize Day, a fun-filled Family Tennis Evening, and an amazing production of “High School Musical” by our Standard 6 pupils - what a whirlwind of activity – all that and learning too!

Finally, a big thank to you the parents for your constant support and encouragement - from costume design to painting backdrops; from running our School Library to outdoor education in our Junior School garden; and from bar-b-quing at tennis evenings to simply supporting all of our educational endeavours. Your kindness is greatly appreciated. I also thank our Junior School staff who are an exceptional team – their passion for education, their kindness and their joie de vivre make St. Gerard’s a fantastic environment to work in - for adults and children alike. One thing is for sure – and I know I say it every year - we cannot stop the march of time…but perhaps we can learn to cherish the moment more. And so I wish you the gift of time during the holidays....time to relax and time to enjoy, cherish and take pride in your wonderful children. A very happy Summertime to one and all!

Newsletter Team: Once again our Newsletter has been compiled by a very talented group of budding journalists from Standard 6. Well done and thank you to Katie Callan, Ben Crowe, Josh Halpin, Ava Ledwidge, Caoimhe Lennon, Aisling Lyons, Lara McCarthy, Jess Mortell, Rory O’Connell, Ava Stanley, Abby Tuthill and Hugo Wyse. And a very special thank you to Stephanie. As if running the busy School Office with efficiency, effectiveness and a ready smile wasn’t enough – Stephanie heads up our Newsletter Team and edits this wonderful production. Thank you Stephanie for everything you do which helps to make our Junior School community such a welcoming place to be.

On 24th May, the Montessori children came into school with a bucket full of happiness because today they were going on their school tour to Newbridge Demesne and Farm. Louise and the rest of the gang couldn’t wait for the day of fun to begin. At 9am they started their journey and excitedly hopped on the bus with their packed lunch and headed off. The boys and girls enjoyed making new friends with some farm animals. By the time they arrived back at school they were worn out but absolutely loved their day out at Newbridge Farm.

This year, Ms. Flanagan’s Greenschool Committee was very successful. Everyone on the St. Gerard’s team put in a lot of effort and achieved many things. We had the Biodiversity Motto Competition in March won by Charlie Moes from Junior Infants with his motto “Biodiversity is the Bees Knees”! We also had the annual Spring Clean. Each class donned their high-viz jackets, gloves and litter pickers and headed out around the school grounds to collect any litter they could find. We had lots of very committed members on the Greenschool Committee who monitored our carpooling and classroom recycling and composting bins all year round. Standard 1 won the Recycling Class of the Year and Standard 5 claimed the prize for carpooling! Next year we are aiming for our Biodiversity Green Flag – good luck to Ms. Flanagan and the new Greenschool Committee!

Jess Mortell On 29th May, Junior and Senior Infants headed off on their school tour to Pine Forest Art Centre. The children were buzzing with excitement and our prayers for good weather were answered – kind of!!! At Pine Forest the children participated in very fun and enjoyable activities such as arts & crafts and games. The children also went on a Nature Walk and were very excited to see all of the beautiful flowers in Pine Forest as they have been learning about plants, seeds and everything flower related in class.

Well the weather definitely didn’t dampen our spirits! We had an absolutely fantastic day out in St. Gerards today. There was a build up of excitement all week across the school. The younger classes were particularly excited because it was one of their first times participating in sports day. There was an electric atmosphere in the air as sports day got underway. Junior and Senior Infants kick-started the day with their egg and spoon race and sack race. Judging by the crowd’s reaction, it was top entertainment for all! Next came their duo events: the three- legged race and the partner obstacle race. Then last of all, for the younger classes was their 50 metre sprint. This was their main event on the day and they all showed great enthusiasm! Next up, Standard One through to Standard Six took part in the same fun events, with lots of laughter from parents, friends and families on the sidelines watching some epic entertaining moments! The track events produced superb performances across the board and became fairly competitive among the senior classes! The students recalled rivalries from previous years in the team and individual events which added to the air of anticipation. Apart from some stunning individual performances, the relay races were one of the more popular events of the day. A big congrats to all the winners. A great display of sportsmanship and speed! But it was not over yet, as there was lots more to come. The second part of the day allowed the students free time with their classes and friends. We all enjoyed hanging out and talking about the laugh out loud moments from the day. We can’t believe our school year is nearly over. When four o’clock arrived, it was time for Prize Giving where some of St Gerard’s outstanding students were recognised for their work and achievements throughout the year. A big shout out to Luca Gheta for winning the top academic student of the year for Standard 6. Huge congrats also to Conor Balmaine for winning Rugby Player of the Year and Hockey Player of the Year went to Indie O’ Donohoe and Olivia Kissane. Harvey O’Sullivan and Abby Tuthill were all round Sports Boy/Sports Girl of the Year. And I was delighted to win the cup for Tennis with Keeley O’Brien winner Tennis Girl of the Year, while Ava Stanley and Finn O’Connell were our overall Medal of Merit winners. There was loud applause and beaming smiles all round. A few of the Standard Six pupils who had been in the Junior School the whole way up were a bit sentimental as that was their last sports day in the Junior School. It’s the end of an era for the Sixth Years too. It was a totally successful and memorable day thanks to all the teachers, staff and volunteers involved and all the hard work and effort they invested in the day. What a way to round off an awesome year at St Gerards! Thanks to all! Page 6

On 8th March, Std 4 and 5 put on an amazing Talent Show. It was a show filled with all kinds of wonderful acts such as comedy, dancing, singing, poetry and musical performances. You could really tell that the students worked extremely hard, with the help of Ms. Carney and Ms. Olohan, to make this a truly great performance on the night.

There was great excitement as Standard 1 and 2 hopped on the bus at 9am on the 24th May 2017. There were shouts of laughter coming from the children as they headed out the school gates for an amazing fun day at Pine Forest Art Centre. The boys and girls brought their packed lunch and had a lovely picnic. Thankfully the weather was good and the children enjoyed their play outdoors. The students from Std 1 and 2 were totally exhausted by the time the bus arrived back to school.

Every year Standard 6 go on a ski trip to Lavarone, Italy for a week. This year we went on the 10th February. We had to be at the airport for 5:45am so we had to be up very early! When we arrived at the airport in Milan we had a 3 hour bus journey to our resort. When we reached our destination it was snowing! We were told who we would be sharing a room with, then we got dressed and had dinner. We would wake up early every morning for breakfast before hitting the ski slopes until lunch. We would then have lunch and head straight back out to the slopes. Every night after dinner we would do an activity. We did bowling, we went on a skidoo, had a table quiz, went swimming, tobogganing and one night we had a fantastic disco! Skiing was a great time to get to know our friends and teachers better. It was pretty hard to ski when there was a lot of ice on the snow especially when you fall (which I did many times!) I loved every moment of the skiing except for the chair lifts at first but once you go up the chair lift a good few times it’s fine. On Monday, we went by bus and by water taxi to Venice where we visited Saint Mark’s Square, Rialto Bridge and lots of shops/markets and finished off the day in a Pizzeria. It has definitely been one of the best holidays ever with the most amazing people. I will never forget anything about the trip especially the spectacular views from the top of the slopes.

This year the boys and girls of Std 3 took a break from their annual Surfing trip and headed off to “Zipit” in Tibradden Wood instead. They started the day with a picnic in the forest and then after a careful and cautious start on the zip-lines, it was no time before the students of Std 3 were zipping around in the air having an absolute blast. With a later than usual 5pm return, the children were all exhausted from the day but thoroughly enjoyed every second!

On the 17th of May, St. Gerard’s Junior School hosted its annual Spelling Bee competition. All classes from Junior Infants to Standard 6 took part in this event. There were at least 3 students from each class who all took their turn in spelling a word. Junior Infants and Senior Infants spelled out their words phonetically and were great competitors. Standards 1, 2 and 3 had their own knockout Spelling Bee and were very enthusiastic. Standards 4, 5 and 6 also had a knockout Spelling Bee and were equally enthusiastic but the spellings were just a little bit harder than the previous competitions! Congratulations to Josh Halpin and Dylan Glass who were the overall winners in the Spelling Bee knockout rounds, and a big ‘well done’ to all the students who took part in the Spelling Bee competitions. A big wish of thanks also goes to Ms. Byrne and to Dr. Farrell who helped make this event possible for all of us to take part in. A final well done goes to all of the students and teachers who took part in this big event. We are all sure that, for the two students who won, this will be an event which they will remember for many years to come.

CL ASS OF 2017

On the 6th May 2017, Std 2 made their First Holy Communion. At 11am everyone took their seats in St. Peter’s Church. All the pews were beautifully decorated with white flowers and chiffon ribbons. The ceremony was lovely and the choir, led by Ms. Olohan, sang beautifully. The children looked so pretty and smart in their white dresses and green blazers. At around 12 noon everybody started arriving for a reception in the Junior School Hall. The hall was beautifully decorated with all the children’s artwork and garlands of flowers made by the parents from the In-House Committee. The children sat at the Head Table on the stage and had chicken nuggets, sausages, biscuits and a spectacular cake made by Brien while the In-House Committee handed out tea, coffee and finger food. The hall was buzzing with parents, sibling, relatives and of course Std 2. After the reception, everyone went away to enjoy the rest of what turned out to be a terrific day! .

This year on May 24th, Std 4 and 5 arrived at school at 7:30am to head off on their school tour to Carlingford Adventure Centre. They hopped on the bus with excitement and talked and sang until they arrived at the Centre. Then they got their wetsuits on and went for a dip. They did water activities and canoeing. It was a great day! Std 4 then headed back home on the bus and Std 5 went to check in to their hostel for the night. That night they went on a night walk – very exciting! All the Std 5 boys stayed in one room and all the girls stayed in another room. The next day they went to the sky ropes to play in the air with ropes and ziplines. They enjoyed every bit of it. On the way back to the school they were all tired and couldn’t wait to see their parents. It was a great school trip and they can’t wait to go back.

S T. G E R A R D ’ S S C H O O L After being postponed twice due to rain, the much anticipated St Gerard’s Family Tennis Evening was finally underway!! Earlier in the day, Standard 6 had their Graduation so this was a perfect way to wrap up an already epic day! There were three groups: Standards 1 & 2; Standards 3 & 4; and Standards 5 & 6. Most children wisely opted to play with a parent. I was crazy enough to play with my little brother! Some of our eager participants were decked out in their tennis whites –they meant business!! Each pair played 5 matches and the team that topped each group went through to Quarter Finals and so on until the Final. After some seriously energetic, lively and entertaining doubles tennis, Dr Farrell presented the medals. The winners of the Senior Competition were Jack O’Brien and his Dad Lorcan who took home the Jebb Cup. At this point, we had all definitely worked up an appetite! The delicious and mouth-watering BBQ was seriously appreciated by all! We eventually left, exhausted but in a great mood, knowing that there was only 4 more days until the holidays. Roll on Summer!

Confirmation

CL ASS OF 2017

On 27th April, St. Gerard’s School and St. Kieran’s School made their Confirmation in St. Fergal’s Church. There was a lot of excitement and preparation leading up to the big day. The teachers and pupils worked very hard to make it a beautiful ceremony. At the beginning of Mass each candidate making their confirmation was seated in their pew with their sponsor and parents. Fr. Larry was leading the mass and kept up the enthusiasm at all times. There was beautiful singing and reading at the mass. It was very exciting when the time came for us to be confirmed. We all joined in a line with our sponsor and waited to receive the Holy Spirit. The anointing of the Holy Spirit took a while but the energy was kept alive by the amazing singing of the choir conducted by Ms. Olohan. At the end of the Mass there was immense joy. After the ceremony there was a magnificent reception back at St. Gerard’s. It was a truly fantastic day that my classmates and I will remember forever.

The Annual Standard 6 Science Fair was a great day with lots of creative and colourful projects displayed in the hall! Everyone put so much time and effort into their projects and it definitely paid off. Everyone had their own unique ideas and experiments, covering lots of areas in science. Junior Infants to Std 5 pupils all came to listen to our presentations. Even some teachers and parents came too! Everybody enjoyed learning about our projects and enjoyed talking about them! After a long thought-out decision and many hours surveying the projects - Mr. Reidy from the Senior School decided the very deserving winner was Peter Catterson. After this long day we were happy to be going home and we were all very proud of our projects - and I’m sure our teachers were too! reporter

This year for the Std 6 end of school production we preformed “High School Musical” with Conor Balmaine and Katie Callan as Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez. They did a brilliant job with several different singing solos. Ms. Carney and Ms. Olohan directed the show and they did a fantastic job of keeping everything under control and everyone on track! The musical took place on Thursday 1st of June. The costumes were created by the parents of the Std 6 pupils. Before the show started all the pupils were excited and there was a real buzz going around as all the children practised their lines and songs for the show. The show went on for nearly two hours and everyone said we all performed wonderfully. a big thank you to Ms. Carney and Ms. Olohan for directing and conducting the whole musical from all the Std 6 pupils. ter repor

AIJS Basketball

AIJS Golf Tournament

In March 2017, Standard 6 boys and girls travelled to Castle Park School to take part in the annual AIJS basketball tournament. The boys’ teams were on first and when we arrived we were greeted warmly and we started to warm up and get prepared for our first game. All our games were against strong and difficult opponents. Unfortunately we didn’t come home with any silverwear but what we did take home was a great experience and fun time playing basketball with each other. The girls’ team took part the following week and they did amazingly well - winning the competition and taking home the trophy! Overall we had a really good experience and had a great time. A special thanks to Castle Park for hosting this event and well done to the Standard 6 girls.

On Monday 15th May 2017 we arrived at Delgany Golf Club at 8am. We were greeted by Julie who was ready to tell us the rules. We practised some pitching and putting to get warmed up. Besides the fact that it was lashing rain we were all looking forward to playing some golf. The format for the day was a scramble so everyone drives and then we pick the best shot. After the golf, the professionals showed us some different shots we can try! Then they picked 3 people to do long drive. I was one of them. As we stepped up and hit the ball the balls were exploding into a white powder. But then they gave us real golf balls and I won the longest drive! Then we went upstairs and had some chips and chicken nuggets – delicious! Then they called out the results and the girls from St. Gerard’s Junior School won. The boys didn’t do as well but we all enjoyed a great day out.

St. Gerard’s Junior School did very well in the competition. Josh and Sarah were the singles players and Caoimhe, Abby, Charlie and Max were the doubles. Sarah and Josh had very good competitions and played very well. Abby and Caoimhe were great but sadly lost in the final in a very close match. And Charlie and Max did really well too! Overall it was an extremely fun day with great competition. A big thank you to the school hosts – Alexandra College and to Julie for coming to help and support the Gerard’s players.

AIJS Sailing We left the school anxiously to go to the Harbour. Elysia O’Leary, Ava Ledwidge and myself were so nervous because this was the first regatta we had entered for St. Gerard’s. We set sail at 2pm. I was thrilled to be sailing with a brilliant first gear. It was quite windy and choppy but that made it better. At the end of the regatta I was very happy to see that the two girls got sailor of the year awards. Afterwards we got some food and then went home. This was one of my favourite days of the year and best thing of all....we got no homework!
