Synopsis Prologue In 1815, Jean Valjean has been in prison for 5 years for stealing a loaf of bread and another 14 for trying to escape. Javert arrives to release him on parole. Valjean skips parole, after he discovers that to a paroled man, the outside world is little more than another kind of jail. He spends a night with a saintly Bishop of Digne. The bitter Valjean steals some silver from the Bishop. When caught, the Bishop backs him up and gives him two silver candlesticks in addition and asks him to become an honest man. Overwhelmed with the Bishop's kindness, Valjean uses the opportunity the Bishop gives him, by buying his soul, to make a change in his life.

Act One

Act Two

Act One brings us to Montreuil Sur Mer, outside a factory which is owned by Valjean who has also become the Mayor. We meet some of the workers from Valjean's factory including Fantine, a single mother of a daughter who she boards with an innkeeper and his wife. Her colleagues find out about her child. While teasing her about her child. Refusing to sleep with the factory foreman, Fantine is dismissed and has to resort to prostitution. Once again, Fantine, refusing to sleep with a client, ends up causing a scene which attracts Inspector Javert. While everyone is gathered, another incident causes Javert to recognise Valjean, but being unsure he does not act. Later we find Valjean at Fantine's at Fantine's bedside. She is dying. Valjean promises to take care of her daughter Cosette. Javert shows up after and Valjean escapes again going to find the money grubbing Thenardiers with whom Fantine's daughter, Cosette, is living. The show moves nine years to the future and to the streets. Cosette has become a young woman and she meets Marius before disappearing when once again she and Valjean meet up with Javert.

Act two takes us to Paris, where the death of General Lamarque has triggered the student revolution. While Marius and the other revolutionaries prepare to resist government forces in Paris they are joined by Javert who comes as a spy to relay the student plans back to the government forces. He is discovered and made a prisoner. Valjean comes to volunteer, and asks to take control of Javert. Being instructed to dispose of Javert, Valjean takes him away, pretends to shoot him, but in reality sends him away. As the battle ensues, many of the revolutionaries are killed or injured, including Marius. Valjean escapes the battle with the injured Marius through the sewers where he once again runs into, and escapes Javert. Reminded that he could have just as easily killed Javert rather than freeing him, Javert comes to the realization that Valjean is truly a good person. Overcome with guilt about the way he has treated Valjean, Javert commits suicide. Marius recovers and the aging Valjean shares his life story. Cosette and Marius are married where they once again run into the Thenardiers who try once again to get money from them in exchange for information about Valjean's history, allowing Marius to figure out before the end of the story that it was Valjean who saved him during the battle.
