EARLY LEARNING

2

You sense it when you catch your child’s eyes following your pen as you write, or discover him carefully stacking blocks in a sequence only he understands. He’s already learning so much, feeling his way toward letters and numbers, seeking out the names of objects, colors, and shapes. He’s also learning how to learn in these earliest years, establishing developmental trajectories now that will profoundly shape his scholastic and social paths later.

At St. George’s, our early childhood experts immerse themselves in advanced scientific knowledge of your child’s rapidly growing mind. And we augment our research-based beliefs by living a simple yet profound truth:

Children learn much more, much earlier when learning feels fun, when a strong start feels like pure joy, and when important work comes dressed in the colors of play.

seizing today

ensuring tomorrow

Paste, paint, and pipe cleaners. Xylophones and tambourines. Story books and writing pads. Quiet moments of intense concentration, followed by the collective roar of a group game. In St. George’s bright, bustling classrooms, your child revels in many of the same things you remember fondly from your own earliest school days. And she also benefits from exciting updates—like collaborative spelling activities at an interactive white board and computer coding on an iPad.

Whether she’s running through a favorite fairytale-come-true in a literary obstacle course, or witnessing history come to life in a teepee she built with her classmates, the active, experiential learning we offer at St. George’s enlivens her mind and engages her imagination. Our traditional curriculum cements a sound academic foundation for your child, while our agile methods ensure that she loves learning today.

honoring individuals

crafting community

A daily chorus of cheerful hellos. A first friend and a second family. A teacher so beloved, she is missed over the weekends. As your child eases into the social environment at St. George’s, we knit her into a community instead of just assigning her to a classroom.

We start with deeply engaged teachers who cultivate strong bonds with your child by knowing not only her face and her name, but also her family and background, strengths and interests, favorites and fears. Then we facilitate links between peers, using our intimate understanding of each child to nudge students into meaningful, happy relationships with one another—toward commonalities, in spite of differences. Your child starts with a set of classmates, but quickly finds herself in a room—and an entire school—full of friends.

forming fine character

shaping our world

Classmates from the heart of the city and the sprawl of the suburbs. Classrooms that reflect the beautiful realities of greater Memphis. Character education that starts with our Episcopal values and builds upon your child’s divine instincts for empathy and engagement. St. George’s draws students from 50 zip codes and operates two lower-school campuses—one in Germantown and another within the city of Memphis. We bring students from both locations together for field trips and special activities, introducing your child to friends from different campuses, different parts of the community, and different backgrounds.

Making difference fascinating instead of frightening lies at the heart of our commitment to respectful inclusion and transformative diversity. At St. George’s, your child cultivates critical and creative thinking skills, but also a will toward friendship, fellowship, and stewardship.

What ties the untamed potential of our youngest students to the uncommon polish of a St. George’s graduate? What links your daughter’s childhood dreams with your grown-up hopes, or yokes the miracle of your son, exactly as he is now, with the wonder of what he might become tomorrow?

It is an approach that combines academic mastery with intellectual acuity, growing self-awareness with deep concern for others, and preparation for college and career with the courage to live a brave, beautiful life.

It is a St. George’s education— from the very start.
