“I was inspired to work hard and never give up.”
As soon as my children were born I began thinking about their education. I wanted them to have the best education possible, far better than what I had. One night, I saw a news report about St. George’s Memphis campus. I was so moved after hearing about the vision and mission of St. George’s that I called the Memphis campus the next day to schedule a tour. I felt so blessed when I received an offer for my children to attend St. George’s. Thanks to generous donors my children were able to attend. We will forever be grateful to those special people. Today, my sons are receiving an excellent education and are excelling using their individual gifts and talents.

When my children began their journey at St. George’s I had not completed my college degree. Thanks to the encouragement I received from the teachers and administrators at St. George’s, I went back to college and earned a B.S. in nursing and went a step further and earned my master’s degree in health administration. Ann Garrison, first grade teacher for both of my sons, provided me with the most encouragement and inspiration. I will forever be grateful to her for the lessons she taught, not only to my children and countless others but for what she taught me every day I volunteered in her classroom. Her commitment to excellence pushed me and my children to work hard and never give up on our dreams.

The 2012-2013 year brought a lot of excitement for the Gryphons! We had eight students awarded collegiate athletic scholarships to make a total of 44 Gryphons now playing in college. We also had 36 upper school students and 76 middle school students receive the Gryphon Award for participating in a sport in each of the three seasons. Last year also brought state championships in girls doubles in tennis, boys singles in tennis, boys individual golf, and boys soccer. Our school has also accomplished the resurfacing of the soccer field, adding on to the visitor’s soccer dugout, and constructing the Lightman/McGuffee Tennis Pavilion. These capital improvements are instrumental to St. George’s success.
The future at St. George’s looks great! We are an overall young, but talented, athletic program. We have great coaches, students, and a community that really supports the program. I personally have grown from watching our students, coaches, and community. We have an unbelievable student body that takes on a heavy class load while excelling in athletics. We also have faculty members that teach on and off the field with the same passion. It has been amazing to watch our families volunteer countless hours for the teams as well. Overall, it has been an honor to watch our ‘new’ athletic program develop into a consistently competitive program that embraces academics, sportsmanship, healthy choices, and teamwork.

“I am dedicated to meeting the needs of our families.” My role as the Director of Finance allows me to work with faculty, parents, trustees, administrators, and students directly. I am fortunate to be in the unique position of listening to the educational goals and objectives of the school, the ideas of creating an environment that fosters creativity and collaboration, and how these skills will prepare the students for college and beyond. I also get to then see these ideas come into the classroom in concrete curriculum and projects through the eyes of my children and in my role as a parent. It makes me appreciate both the work I am lucky to be a part of and the educational opportunity I am able to give my children. I am able to really see and appreciate how truly different a St. George’s education is from other schools in the area.

The school’s administration and board of trustees have focused on financial sustainability. I am particularly grateful to Hugh Stephens and Jere McGuffee for their leadership of the finance committee in recent years. Through efficient operations, St. George’s is structured to deliver an outstanding educational experience that compares to any other school in the region, without being the most expensive independent school option. Growing the endowment is a strategic goal for the school. This endowment growth will help us meet the needs of our families. Enrollment and endowment are the biggest opportunities for growth and continued financial sustainability. Beth Porter won the 2012 Memphis Business Journal’s CFO of the Year Award in the category of non-profit company (less than $30 million).

St. George’s has been a place that felt right for our family from the very start. All three of our older children joined St. George’s when they entered the sixth grade. Although they joined in middle school, their teachers and administrators made sure it was a smooth transition, academically and socially. There is a true commitment on the part of the faculty and staff to help their students. At our first open house, we were struck by the fact that teachers gave out their cell phone numbers for parents to call with questions. We have seen many other examples of caring teachers in the years since.
Our children have been challenged and equipped with skills that have made them better students. We’re all unique individuals with our own special gifts and talents that should be utilized. That is why we appreciate the many opportunities St. George’s provides to learn outside of the formal learning environment. Not only do the teachers and administrators at our school develop the confidence, character, and leadership skills of each child, they also instill the importance of teamwork and community service. Everyone works together and we feel like we’re one big family at St. George’s.

A Message from BILL TAYLOR and PAUL HORNE It is a great time to be a St. George’s Gryphon! St. George’s Independent School is thriving as one of the largest independent schools in Tennessee and the Southeast, with record enrollments this fall. Our faculty is top-notch. Our students are engaged with their learning and with the Memphis community, and our graduates are well-prepared for college. Our trustees and volunteers give tirelessly, sharing their administrative, financial, entrepreneurial, cultural, legal, construction, strategic planning, and academic knowledge. We continue to gain national recognition for our distinctive educational model through involvement in organizations such as EdLeader21 and the National Partnership for Educational Access, as well as blog postings by educational consultants Grant Lichtman and Jonathan E. Martin. Your gifts, both big and small, to our Annual Fund and to The Time is Now Capital Campaign have helped us improve and maintain our facilities, add new programs, and pave the way to financial sustainability in the future. Importantly, your gifts allow us to adapt to the times. They help us move beyond a lecture-based system mired in the past to a school experience that embraces a learning that is so deep and experiential that students enjoy learning for learning’s sake. These types of learning experiences – ones that encourage questioning, critical thinking, and creativity – will prepare students to successfully tackle the economic, social, and environmental challenges they will face in their future. St. George’s Dedicates SKUDDER HALL In Spring of 2013, the school announced that the upper school wing of its Collierville campus would be named Skudder Hall in recognition of the leadership and service Beth and David Skudder have provided St. George’s over the years. Board members, supporters, faculty, and friends of the school gathered to celebrate the Skudder family in a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting. “The Board of Trustees wished to recognize the Skudder family for their service and contributions to St. George’s, its students, and its mission,” said Bill Taylor. “On behalf of the board, faculty, and students we are grateful for their stewardship, visionary leadership, and support of St. George’s throughout the years.” Both Beth and David Skudder have been longtime supporters, engaged parents, and board members at St. George’s. Not only did Beth serve on the Parents Association Board as Vice President and President, she also chaired the St. George’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner. David served on the St. George’s Board of Trustees previously and began serving his current trustee term in 2011. He has also been actively involved in the buildings and grounds activities at all three campuses. David and Beth have three children, all of whom have attended or currently attend St. George’s: Will ‘10, Mary Margaret ‘12, and Maddie ‘16. “We love St. George’s and want to encourage others to show their support for St. George’s at this critical time,” said David Skudder. “It is time for those of us who can give generously to step up and help St. George’s move into its next chapter.”

Endowment MATTERS A well-funded endowment is critical to private schools today to safeguard from enrollment and economic changes. In addition, a well-funded endowment will hold down the cost of tuition when earnings are reinvested in the school’s operating budget. St. George’s endowment has been critical at various milestones in the school’s history. For instance, nearly fifteen years ago the school began a historic expansion that included building the Collierville campus, purchasing the Germantown campus property, and opening the lower school in Memphis. The endowment played a part in allowing us to secure the financing for the expansion.

We have two children currently attending St. George’s. They each have very different personalities and learning styles. St. George’s has been a great fit for them because of the unique learning environment. The teachers really focus on each child, maximizing his or her unique potential within a very supportive and interactive academic environment. Our children were able to find their own ‘fit’ within the school. They quickly became involved in things that interested them the most whether it was academics, athletics, and/or the arts. They have also enjoyed the many friendships that came along with it.

St. George’s has instilled self-confidence in our children through the amount of group interaction, public speaking, and personal accountability taught in the classroom. At the same time, it has also prompted increased awareness and involvement in the greater Memphis community which is important to our family. We volunteer together as a family for MIFA’s Meals on Wheels program, so we were pleased to see that community service and involvement is such a big part of St. George’s mission.

Building a Community of READERS Thanks to the leadership of our library staff, as well as the generosity of several interested donors, the St. George’s libraries are lively centers of learning and information-sharing. There are a total of five staff members dedicated to ensuring smooth library operations as well as creating innovative, new programs. All five come with a wealth of experience from in and out of the classroom. Leah Allison, Library Director at the Collierville campus, for example, recently received Tenn-Share’s Deanne Nipp-Kientz Resource Sharing Award for volunteerism, while Jennifer Winstead, Library Director at the Germantown campus, has already brought two nationally recognized authors for campus visits this fall. From book fairs to lunch-time reading clubs for middle schoolers, from a redesigned middle and upper school web page to creative bulletin boards for Banned Book Week, librarians work hard to make the library fun and engaging for students. It is the extra library programs that seem to set St. George’s apart because they deliver such rich experiences that stay with students, inspiring their continued interest in reading. “I would argue that our library programs are second to none in the Memphis area,” says Stewart Burgess, Director of Early Childhood. Participation in the lower school “Guys Read” Reading Club has been high; boys enjoy pizza and time with their dads during the evening meetings. Lower school girls can participate in a Mother-Daughter Book Club, with a luncheon at school as the culminating event. “At St. George’s we strive to create a community of readers,” says Mrs. Winstead, “We have spent the last decade incorporating innovative initiatives in order to increase excitement about books and reading on the part of our students. From author visits to special book clubs and a re-
designed summer reading program capitalizing on student choice, our programs contribute to our ultimate goal of building a community of passionate readers.” Mrs. Winstead can’t wait to expand the programming at the Cooper Library, especially as plans and donors come together for much-needed renovation. She points out there’s always an opportunity to support the libraries. Parent volunteers are needed. Gifts to the library for birthday books or other acquisitions are always welcome, as well as capital gifts for construction. The Class of 2013 was quite adventurous in the college search process. We have fourteen students attending colleges that St. George’s students had not applied to before. Those who chose schools where we had previously sent students were admitted to unique academic programs and honors colleges. It was exciting to watch a few students receive their admission decisions. Watching Samer scream and drop the telephone after being told that he had been admitted to Goucher was funny but highlighted that he was thrilled to be admitted to a school that will be a perfect fit for him.
I can only imagine what St. George’s will be like in ten years. Having achieved so much in the first decade, what started as an interesting concept has grown into a top notch independent school that offers the perfect balance of academics and extracurricular programs. Students are welcomed as they are and given the opportunity to grow. As we continue to enroll students from drastically different backgrounds, we will be in the unique position to prepare students to navigate our ever-changing world.

Jay Martin, Sr.: Over the years, St. George’s has accomplished more than one could have dreamed. The progress at the Memphis campus, specifically test scores, has been the most impressive to me. I believe the faculty and staff of St. George’s are what make it such a unique experience for students. I taught for two years...my first and my last. It is a tough job. I appreciated the professionalism and dedication that the entire school family exhibited when I was involved as a parent. After my son graduated I stayed involved because I wanted to see this school’s mission succeed.

I attended St. George’s from prekindergarten to sixth grade. Some of my best friends to this day are those I met at St. George’s. I loved every teacher I had from, from Mrs. Wilson in kindergarten to Mrs. Morton in sixth grade. But I would have to say that my favorite St. George’s memory was with my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Landis. After lunch, when we were all full of energy, she would turn on music and we would dance to get all of our energy out. Still to this day, every time I see her, in the grocery store or at a football game, she always repeats the phrase that I was known to say quite often, “I didn’t do it!” She knew how to make learning fun. I am proud to call myself a St. George’s graduate.

Maggie Murff Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations I began my St. George’s experience in October of 2012. My first year has been very exciting! There is truly never a dull moment in my day! I have met lots of wonderful St. George’s families and friends along the way, and I have loved every minute of it. One of the reasons St. George’s is special to me is because of our educational philosophy. The faculty and staff recognize that each student has their own talent, and the teachers and administration will bend over backwards to make sure that it is recognized and nurtured during the student’s experience at St. George’s. I am so
passionate about the Annual Fund because of all the hard work accomplished by our students, faculty, and staff. The Annual Fund supports the faculty’s and staff ’s efforts to ensure that our students experience more every single day. Because of the Annual Fund we have been able to not only support the regular curriculum and co-curricular activities, but renovate spaces and make upgrades to various systems in place on all of our campuses.
