Thank you For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. – Romans 12:4-5 It takes many people with diverse skills and experiences to create a vibrant school community, as I reminded our students during our opening Convocation in August. I am grateful for our many members who support the gift embedded in St. George’s, the gift of hearing and learning from a remarkable variety of voices around us. The work of our school, and any great school, is to create an environment where we do hear each other, care about each other, and recognize our shared humanity. This effort has never been more important. Becoming educated involves more than just accommulating knowledge – for today’s world, it must involve learning more about others and challenging our assumptions. To all who make this experience of listening and learning possible for our students – from infants to seniors – thank you.

Caring for our world: Outdoor Initiatives Gain momentum “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived…I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.” – Henry David Thoreau
If the goal of education is to co-create, with students, lives filled not just with knowledge but also deep and meaningful impact, surely that education must borrow a page from Thoreau and “go to the woods.” Which is exactly what St. George’s does, time after time, in every grade, with every student, bolstered by a commitment to learn from God’s creation. With three campuses totaling nearly 250 acres, it’s only natural that learning moves frequently outdoors and that school leaders envision even more opportunities in the future. Making that possible is a lead gift from Amy and Emry Sisson, in support of outdoor initiatives and programs. Their children, Emma ’13 and Graham ’17, were leaders in the SG-GO (St. George’s Great Outdoors) program, and consequently, “SG-GO has certainly been near and dear to our hearts,” stated Amy. Incidentally, both Emma and Graham were valedictorians at St. George’s, going on to attend Dartmouth College. “In so many ways our students are the beneficiaries of stunning and unique gifts. Among them is the 200 acres of well-preserved wetlands that we find right out the back door of our Collierville campus,” said Ross Peters, Head of School. “With unprecedented potential through this remarkable natural resource,
we want to ensure all of our students and families and alumni have access to the beautiful and diverse landscape that lies between our verdant fields and lodge-like academic building on one side and the Wolf River on the other.” “The Sissons’ generosity helps us move toward this goal,” said Peters. The vision allows for dreaming, and students and other stakeholders have been invited into the process. Possibilities, dependent upon additional funding, include expanded outdoor programs and a raised boardwalk near the northeastern part of the property. “Improving access to the Wolf River and the more remote areas of campus will only increase our use of those areas and enhance learning and student engagement,” noted Bill McClain, science teacher and Director of Sustainability. “Of course, we want to feed our adventurous spirits and get a little dirty sometimes, but a boardwalk will make exploring the woods a more regular experience for the members of our community.” “SGIS was the right place for our children,” said Amy Sisson. “The academics are top-notch, and the unique outdoor assets of the Collierville campus really set St. George’s apart from other schools. Teaching children to seek and share: We bid Farewell to two beloved Teachers At the close of the 2016-17 school year, we recognized the retirement of Jane Finney and Jan Colgate.

In Jane Finney’s classroom students gave their best effort. Why? Because Jane Finney set her expectations high, clothed her expectations with kindness, and shared her pride when students gained independence and demonstrated responsibility for their actions. This did not happen without effort. Her expectations for her students emanated from the expectations she held for herself. Jane arrived early and stayed late. She planned constantly. Since her hire in 1983 she served this school with unfailing love.
Ever smiling, ever enthusiastic, Jan Colgate inspired students and musicians ever since she joined the St. George’s community in 1989. We were never sure how she managed to play, conduct, mouth the words, and encourage all at once. She made it look easy and she did it with gusto. Meticulously planning the traditional grade-level music programs, she always ensured that each student enjoyed a role unique to his or her talents.

Countless kindergarteners worked hard every school night to get themselves into bed by 8:00 pm, believing with all their hearts that Mrs. Finney was nightly checking every neighborhood in Greater Memphis. The faith and trust she instilled in students extended well past kindergarten, as evidenced by her willingness to don latex gloves and pull the loose tooth of any lower school student needing a little dental attention. We wish Jane, husband Bill, and son Scott ’92 the very best in her newest life chapter.

Important to Jan, and a blessing for our school community, was her commitment to bringing outstanding musicians to campus for performances and orchestrating student participation in community music events, resulting in enrichment for all. Her enthusiasm for music was transmitted to generations of students so that they not only remembered the building blocks of tempo, tone, and notes, but, more importantly, came to hold a deep appreciation for the power of music to change our world. We join her husband, George, and her two St. George’s graduates, Jason ’92 and Laura ’96, both of whom are accomplished musicians in their own right, in wishing Jan many happy, music-filled days in her retirement.

Making a Difference from the very Start: Little georgies expands to meet demand The Little Georgies program at St. George’s has come a long way. Evolving from a simple daycare solution for employees, started in 2007, Little Georgies has become a highly-regarded—and sought-after—infant and early learning program, offering an engaging and innovative curriculum for infants and toddlers. In the past year, Little Georgies has almost tripled in size due to local demand. Seven new teachers have been added to the early childhood faculty to allow for more individualized instruction, small group lessons, and large group learning opportunities. Danielle Taylor (parent of Bella ’23 and Jack ’28) was promoted as program director to oversee day-to-day operations, faculty training, and curriculum development. Rebecca Smith (parent of son Jack ’21, and daughters Kate ’24, Maggie ’18, and Annie ’17) joined the staff as assistant to the Director of Early Learning, also serving as the admissions assistant for Little Georgies. The program is rich in sensory experiences, art, music, and opportunities for exploration. “We are providing an enriched language environment and engaging learning opportunities that foster independence, individuality, kindness, respect for others,” said Dr. Stewart Burgess, Lower School Director of Early Learning. Noting that the teachers are architects of the custom-designed curriculum, Burgess further points to the lifelong love of learning that teachers strive to instill at an early age. Over the summer, St. George’s expanded the facilities for Little Georgies, including refitting the rear cottage of the little chapel as a nursery and shifting classrooms in order to provide an additional room for three-year-olds.
“We are so excited about Little Georgies’ growth as a program. Amazing families and teachers have been drawn into our community, and for good reason,” said Burgess. “As you walk through the hallways and rooms of Little Georgies, you see the kind of learning environment you’d expect to see at St. George’s at every turn. Our infants and toddlers are happy, the teachers are kind, and the curriculum is colorful, intelligent, and creative. Our children are learning and growing by leaps and bounds and they are excited to return each day.”
The response to the program enhancements has been overwhelmingly positive. Current enrollment stands at 63 infants and toddlers, an increase of 174% over the 201617 school year. More than 75 students are expected to be enrolled by the spring of the 2018-19 school year. Meanwhile, the waiting pool for entry into the program is substantial and continues to grow. In evolving from faculty/staff-only childcare, Little Georgies continues to focus on serving the St. George’s community. Given that focus, St. George’s connections (siblings, alumni, etc.) are noted and taken into account in the admission process.
“We love having Henry and Trues at Little Georgies, but I don’t think anyone loves it as much as they do. Little Georgies was certainly highly recommended by all who had been introduced to it, but having the opportunity to send our children to a place that meant so much to us makes it that much more appealing. It’s been a wonderful blessing for all of us.”

St. George’s Tradition + innovation: Animals, Snow Cones, and so much more What do snow cones, the Memphis Zoo, persuasive communications, and a UPS delivery man have to do with each other? For St. George’s first graders, quite a lot. Last spring, first grade teachers were ready to take the animal unit – a 23-year tradition that culminates with the much-loved animal play – to the next level, adding new twists in order build important new skills. “Back then, Head of School Rick Ferguson suggested a play,” recalled current first grade teacher, Susie Field. “We wanted to have a performance where each child had a speaking part.” Students typically studied animal kingdoms and presented the information on stage to parents. In doing so, they had, of course, built research skills and confidence in public speaking. But the first grade team – led by Innovation Lab teacher Sarah Matheny and Learning Specialist Kim Finch and supported by first grade homeroom teachers – knew the first graders were capable of more. The teachers began with the Memphis Zoo, helping students to understand the conservation role that zoos play. From there, students realized that some local zoo animals are “adoptable” and thus supported through financial contributions. Out of that was born the idea of persuasive videos, created by small groups of first graders and shown in chapel so that the rest of the student body could vote on a favorite animal to adopt.
With adoptees chosen, social entrepreneurship kicked in and yielded a business plan focused on snow cones (lemonade didn’t have a high enough profit margin). First graders gained a “business loan” from the school in order to purchase supplies. Marketing plans were implemented in the form of posters and content in the weekly enewletter and teacher websites. Trial and error on training day resulted in a shift in assembly line practices. On sale day, the first graders reminded other students that they could receive change back on their 50 cent purchase, donate the balance back to the cause, or help a friend who might have forgotten to bring snow cone money. The students raised enough money to adopt three animals at the zoo, and the Memphis Zoo gained new fans. But the results were so much more. The much-loved traditions were maintained, but the learning and skills went well beyond the original scope of the unit. Students accumulated important, real-world business experience, practiced their persuasive communications skills – and, importantly – deepened empathy by connecting to a nonprofit in Memphis. “We wanted them to understand what they can do with their knowledge – how they can use their knowledge to have an impact greater than themselves,” said Finch and Matheny in reflecting back on the experience. Yes, snow cones, zoo animals, and persuasive communication came together last spring to create a deeper, richer learning experience for first graders. But where does the UPS man come in? After dropping off his packages at the welcome desk, he stopped by for a treat and declared it the best snow cone in the city. The Gryphon Club
Launched last year, the Gryphon Club allows families, friends, grandparents, and alumni to support Gryphon athletics through the purchase of season passes and program ads. Funds are used for promoting student spirit at athletic events, senior banners, senior night activities, complimentary fan buses to state championship games, sports programs, and more.

Gryphon athletics continues to thrive. A record 91% of SGIS students participated in athletics in 2016-17. Fourteen students moved on to play at the college level. All 18 varsity sports qualified for post season play, with 15 of those qualifying for the state tournament. We won the state championship in boys golf and were runnersup in boys cross country and boys soccer. An additional six teams made it to the state semifinals. Two outstanding althetes, Sarah Thompson ’17 and Winston Margaritis ’18, won individual state titles in swimming and golf, respectively.

Norris, Jr. was a member of the St. George's Class of 2019 who died in the summer of 2006, just after his junior kindergarten year. Norris embraced the wonder and joy of life. He loved his family, friends, and God. He built forts, enjoyed sports, and loved being outdoors. To honor his memory, his parents partnered with the school to create the Norris, Jr. Outdoor Adventure Series, an exciting outdoor program designed to educate lower school students about the wonder, amazement, and beauty of the outdoors.

Noted as one of the school’s most caring and generous advocates, Michael D. Rose’s legacy is felt each and every day at St. George’s – as children exercise in the Max Rose Gymnasium at the Memphis campus, as guests enter the Rose Lobby of the Stokes Fieldhouse, when they enjoy assemblies in the Jones Commons, a result of a leadership gift to the late 1990s “Fulfill the Promise” campaign, and even as mail and personnel are transported between campuses via a van underwritten by Rose family foundations
A giant in business and influential advocate for Memphis, Rose was remembered by former Head of School Rick Ferguson as, “among the very few who recognized early on the positive difference St. George’s could make if the school expanded its mission to include a broader community of students and families…. [He] wanted to be sure [our Memphis campus students] also had access to additional learning opportunities after school and over the summer.” Rose never lost touch with St. George’s, Ferguson recalls. Even when he moved to Nashville for cancer treatments, Rose invited newly hired Head of School Ross Peters to visit. “In a single morning and lunch in Nashville,” says Peters, “I got unique insight into the long-lasting and close relationship between Rick and Mike. The conversation between these two men, both with fascinating and powerful legacies in Memphis and at St. George’s, gave me perhaps my clearest view yet of the sort of people who move their community forward…I caught a glimpse of the spark and strength each man displayed in helping to make our school what it has become.” Ferguson remembers the watchful and supportive eye Rose always kept on St. George’s, even after his children graduated and went on to other schools. When other pointed out impossibilities, said Ferguson, Rose responded, “We can, and we will.”
