The “little chapel” was the original sanctuary for St. George’s Episcopal Church and was consecrated by Bishop Maxon on March 29, 1937.

St. George’s Independent School and The Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee Reaffirm Historic Connection The Episcopal tradition has been essential at St. George’s since its founding in 1959 and was reaffirmed through an agreement between the school and the Diocese of West Tennessee this past summer. Years of prayerful work and dialogue on the part of the Bishop, clergy, former Head of School Bill Taylor, trustees, key volunteers, faculty, and staff allowed for a new partnership that affirms the Episcopal legacy as we move into the future. Rather than signifying a shift in the direction of the school, our connection with the diocese supports the work we have been doing as a school for many years. From our chapel program to our unique three-campus model, St. George’s has continued to embody

the tradition of Episcopal schools without a formal connection to the diocese. Now, the partnership with The Diocese of West Tennessee solidifies our dedication to our school mission of “preparing students for lives of learning and meaningful contribution in an inclusive learning community that nurtures outstanding academic achievement, relationships, leadership, and character reinforced by JudeoChristian values.” Belief in the balance between faith and reason, as well as the idea that every person is a child of God, has grounded and will continue to ground our work as an independent school in partnership with The Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee. We are excited about and grateful for our Episcopal connection. 7

St. George’s and Serve901 Forge Unique Partnership In January, St. George’s and Serve901 entered into an exclusive partnership to support service learning and community engagement. While the partnership is multi-faceted, the most visible aspect of the relationship is newly renovated shared space at 815 N. McLean Blvd. in the Vollintine/Evergreen neighborhood. Nicknamed the St. George’s/Serve901 Bunkhouse, the facility includes bunks for more than 100 people, as well as common areas. The space will facilitate deeper and expanded opportunities for service learning for both the Serve901 program and St. George’s. In addition, St. George’s will be able to use the facility for other purposes including alumni events, meetings, and class, team, or co-curricular retreats. Equally significant, the Serve901 affiliation will include a four-year programming partnership in which Serve901 will collaborate with SGIS faculty and students to create outstanding learning experiences, from summer camps to “deep dive” leadership opportunities for middle and upper school students.

The partnership between St. George’s and Serve901, Choose901, and its umbrella organization, City Leadership, is a manifestation of our desire to serve our students by showing them how they might serve our city. Like many colleges and universities, we believe that the academic experience is augmented when students are deeply and authentically engaged, when they are given chances to make meaningful contributions now, rather than waiting until adulthood. Our appreciation goes to SGIS parents Beth and David Skudder. Their generous gift to City Leadership’s initiatives and programs will not only benefit our city but also help to leverage St. George’s presence and prospects in this vital work.

Banner Year for St. George’s New Head of School, Ross Peters The 2015-16 school year began with a big St. George’s welcome to Ross Peters, Head of School, his wife, Katie, and his daughter, Eleanor ’22, as they relocated to Memphis from Atlanta where Ross had served as Head of Upper School at The Westminster Schools. “My greatest pleasure this year will be to get to know the St. George’s community – students, families, faculty, coaches, and staff,” said Ross last summer. And, he certainly did. From serving as advisor to the senior prefects to opening doors at lower school carpool lines, Ross built relationships with St. George’s community members while also managing the immense responsibilities of the school’s complex, multi-campus ecosystem. In his first year, the school completed a national search for an outstanding middle school

director, Traci Osterhagen-Brock, and announced a new middle/upper school schedule. In his spare moments, Ross lent support to a number of community organizations, including the Lipscomb and Pitts Breakfast Club, Germantown Chamber of Commerce, and Crosstown Concourse in midtown. Perhaps most exciting, he brokered an exclusive partnership with City Leadership and Serve901 resulting in a new facility and service learning curriculum (see article on page 8). “This rare school is uniquely positioned to help students become the adults that Memphis and the world need to contribute to and lead in an exciting and challenging global society,” says Ross, “It’s been a great first year, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

St. Georgeâ€™s Celebrates the Class of 2016

This class learned the true meaning of community early on as St. George’s sought to broaden and deepen the mission of the school by opening a campus in the heart of Memphis in 2001. As a result, students from our Memphis campus for the first time walked across the stage to receive their well-earned high school diplomas. The Commercial Appeal spent weeks on campus documenting the historic event (www. commercialappeal.com/experiment) as the school community realized and affirmed the fulfillment of a vision set more than 15 years ago.

Whether moving on to small, private liberal arts colleges or large state school honors programs, the Class of 2016 is now scattered across the county (with even one member in Scotland), ready to put their academic and life skills to the test.

A new generation

Pointing out that she was “never on this journey alone,” Valedictorian Sope Adeleye who is now at Harvard University, echoed the sentiments voiced by each Baccalaureate and Commencement speaker: that community is paramount in the learning process. Explaining her Harvard decision to Head of School Ross Peters, Sope said, “I have learned not what to think but how to think, and not just how to think but how to think with other people.”

This event will feature over sixty local and regional artists and hundreds of pieces of artwork will be on display for purchase. You will see canvas paintings, sculpture, woodwork, watercolor paintings, and even bottle cap art. As a young school, the necessary process of growing and developing a full-fledged theater department provided pivotal experiences for a number of alumni, including a truly rare opportunity to travel to Scotland for Edinburghâ€™s famous Fringe Festival in August 2011. 65+ fifth grade speeches delivered in chapel services

Sophie Kennedy ‘12 works in Chicago for Ballot Ready, an organization providing non-partisan voter guidance. She spoke to history classes at St. George’s while on a recent visit to Memphis and also registered of-age seniors to vote. Graduating from the University of Chicago with degrees in both political science and theater gave her experience in “thinking about my audience and whether the audience is going to get the story I am telling.” Expanding upon her memories of the plays she did while in upper school, Sophie states, “I credit my theater experience in giving me a comfort level with people and an ability to jump into new situations.”

Stephanie Foley Eady ’98 says it’s hard to pick just one favorite memory from her years at St. George’s but she fondly recalls the talent shows and Mr. Ferguson’s crazy hats (see page 45). She also remembers a class trip with Mrs. McWaters to Nashville and picnicking on the grounds of Mrs. McWaters’ alma mater, Vanderbilt – an experience that impacted Stephanie’s decision to attend Vandy herself. Having earned her B.A. from Vanderbilt and her J.D. from UCLA School of Law, she currently works as a real estate attorney in Palm Beach, FL. “I’m not sure I ever specifically envisioned my future career path [while in elementary school],” says Stephanie. “However, I do feel that St. George’s prepared me extremely well and gave me a solid foundation for future learning and achievement.” She identifies her support of the Annual Fund as a way to “do my part” in maintaining the school’s tradition of excellence.

Craig Haring came to St. George’s from Woodland Presbyterian School seeking a high school experience that would prepare him for college and career. While at St. George’s he particularly enjoyed science classes taught by Mr. and Mrs. Smothers. “Their enthusiasm got me interested in the science field,” says Craig, noting that science also gave him the opportunity to develop a theory and defend it. “St. George’s prepared me to be a critical thinker,” says Craig. “I remember the teachers always challenging my answers, forcing me to think through my reasoning.” He also recalls Youth Legislature trips which helped him better understand state government functions. Those experiences served him well as he moved on to earn a B.S. in finance from Miami University in Ohio and a J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law. Now living in Wilmington, DE, Craig is lawyer at Blank Rome, LLP in the general litigation practice group.

Hats oﬀ to Rick Ferguson! Since coming to St. George’s in 1984, Rick has worn many hats––figuratively and literally (see sidebar). He first became head of school when it was a small elementary day school located in Germantown. He was at the helm when the board of trustees decided to expand the school into a middle and upper school. And he was at the forefront when the school was approached by a group of anonymous donors who wished to see St. George’s open an elementary school in Memphis. In 2007, Rick transitioned to executive director of the St. George’s Independent School Foundation, as Bill Taylor moved into leading the school. The move allowed Rick to do what his heart and soul had been calling him to do for a number of years: shed his administrative responsibilities to focus on student-centered programs and ideas he’d been dreaming up for years. Student interaction and support, particularly as it related to ways in which students connected across the three campuses, were his primary passions and where he felt the greatest joy. Since announcing his retirement, St. George’s families, past and present, friends, and alumni, have stepped forward to honor Rick and Elizabeth by endowing the Ferguson Fund for Outdoor Experiences. As a tireless crusader for outdoor education and a staunch believer that kids learn best when learning is fun, Rick is responsible for much of the active learning that makes St. George’s so unique. Whether it was climbing a tree with students as an auction item, donning his boots for Mud Trudge, rappelling up and down walls, baking cookies in his tent at the Norris Jr. Camp-Out, or designing an obstacle course in the woods, Rick was instrumental in bringing together students from all campuses for extraordinary learning opportunities not found at any other school in the mid-south. The fund will be used to make outdoor experiences, from dog sledding to rafting and everything in between, available to deserving students who may not have the financial means to afford such activities. As for Rick’s retirement plans, you will likely find him trekking through the woods, camping by the Wolf River, canoeing down the Mississippi River, and occasionally visiting the halls of St. George’s. Rick said it best, “My love for our school runs deep. St. George’s has truly been a way of life for me. It’s a special place because of the people involved, and I look forward to continuing our adventure together.” If you would like to join us in honoring Rick by giving to the Ferguson Fund for Outdoor Experiences, please return the enclosed envelope with your gift.
