HEADMISTRESS Dear Parents, It is always with a wry smile that I explain that our school magazine is known as “The Dragon”. (It may also interest you to know that ex-members of staff are known as “Dragons”, but that’s a different story…) On the one hand, it is perhaps unsurprising that anything associated with St George should be named thus; however, when we reflect on the Dragon’s role in the legend, it can seem odd that a publication of celebration is so titled. But certainly the presence of the Dragon is intrinsic to the story of St George, as is this magazine to the school. It sets out the richness and variety of the girls’ achievements, both collectively and as individuals. So often the successes and adventures featured herein also involve the slaying of dragons – though thankfully metaphorical rather than real!

Yet, as with all such publications, it only provides a highly selective overview. For each girl at St George’s, the year will contain its own highlights and dragons slain. These may be publicly lauded, or they may be very private moments, but I sincerely hope that every Georgian can reflect that “No charger have I, and no sword by my side,/Yet still to adventure and battle I ride.”

I hope that you enjoy reading the magazine as much as I have.

FAREWELL TO FORMER STAFF JAN SMITH Mrs Jan Smith joined St George’s as a Chemistry teacher in 2005. A dedicated teacher, she was keen to promote women in science and worked closely with her Head of Department, Angela Bushill. She insisted on a high standard of both work and behaviour, but always had time for her pupils.

Jan firmly believed in education in the widest sense, and successfully ran both the Extended Project Qualification and the Young Enterprise Scheme. When preparing their EPQ, she demanded that the girls think independently and research widely. She was very clear to the mentors that the girls should be encouraged and guided, but that the project should be entirely their own.

And her palpable delight when amazing EPQs were duly delivered was always evident; her high expectations indeed resulted in truly impressive presentations.

Similarly with Young Enterprise, Jan encouraged budding business leaders to work together to research, market and produce an innovative product. It is testament to Jan’s careful coordination that St George’s regularly won awards at the local and regional competitions.

I am sure that Jan’s retirement will be action-packed and fun-filled; we wish her every happiness.

MR ANAND VERMA Finding Mr Anand Verma was a veritable coup for St George’s; a PPE graduate from Oxford University and former City lawyer with somewhat left-leaning political views.

It must have been an unguarded moment when he let slip his natural understanding of mathematics; this could only mean one thing – Mrs Green, the Head of Mathematics at the time, promptly "invited" him to teach the subject in her department.

The trouble with Mr Verma was his unlimited talent and enthusiasm; he soon found himself roped into teaching Business Studies, Politics, PSHE and Mathematics – and if all that was not enough, he still found time to provide free advice at his local Citizens’ Advice Bureau. What made him a brilliant teacher was his excellent subject knowledge and patience. It is hardly surprising that his pupils went on confidently to achieve their potential in exams and their liking and respect for him grew with time.

As Head of Economics, Anand introduced a number of new initiatives, including the Bank of England Challenge and guest speakers, including the Orwell Prize shortlisted journalist Aditya Chakrabortty talking about Apple’s production at the Foxconn factory in China. Together with the Politics Department he organised trips to listen to Economics and Politics talks at The LSE and at Eton College.

His appointment as Oxbridge mentor came as no surprise; his excellent communication skills and his deep, intuitive intelligence were assets St George’s was keen to make good use of. His reputation for providing great advice spread like wildfire; the gradient of his popularity shifted up several notches.

Mr Verma set up "office" in the Maths corridor (no pun intended), where he could be often seen advising keen and attentive young ladies all about interview techniques and how to write killer personal statements for UCAS.

ANGELA BUSHILL Mrs Angela Bushill joined St George’s from the maintained sector in 2006. Holding the key posts of Head of Science and Head of Year simultaneously demands a very special (and organised!) individual; Angela was certainly this.

When I saw him helping absolutely everyone at St George’s, I realised that we had amongst us a very special person. Most of the staff knew that if they needed someone to cover their prep with a 15-minute notice, Anand was the person to ask.

As Head of Science, she encouraged many a budding scientist and medic. Always one to grasp every opportunity, Angela even turned her misfortune when injuring a finger into a positive – by persuading her hand surgeon to establish a link with the school, which developed into a full-blown medical debating competition, involving a number of local schools. Angela wore her intelligence lightly, yet she challenged and inspired some of the most able girls in the school. Always willing to go the extra mile, she was even happy to set up work experience in university research labs for the most promising pupils.

He treated time as a somewhat malleable quantity; whilst he was never unprofessional, often he would be seen rushing up the hill to school to teach or down the hill to his badly parked Nissan Micra car to make it to an appointment.

Fundamentally, he made time for everyone and this meant he often had little time for himself.

When Mr Verma told me he was going out with a beautiful Catalan girl from Barcelona called Laura, I found this impossible to believe. Then on one fateful evening in Southall, I found him standing behind me in a queue – holding hands with Laura!

That is when I realised Laura not only existed but also that this was serious.

Mr Verma left St George’s at the end of the Summer Term to start a new life in Barcelona; he is missed very much as a colleague, a teacher, a counsellor and a mentor – but many will always miss him as a very special friend. He returns briefly in November for the English leg of his wedding; we all wish him happiness, fulfilment and tranquillity.

Angela was also a deeply caring individual.

As Head of Year, her skills of empathy and listening were often called upon. Her understanding of the female teenage brain (often a mystery!) was truly impressive – she did not judge, but gently guided the girls towards the best outcome. She supported them throughout the often stressful GCSE years with a sensible yet caring approach.

This ability to listen and gently advise was also much in evidence in the Staff Room; Angela was the confidante of many. As Staff Forum representative, she was always willing to put forward views sensitively and objectively, whilst being unafraid to point out to me when I did not get things quite right!

She will be sorely missed.

Helen Woodward

MR JOHN CAMERON Mr Cameron was at St George’s for only a short time but he certainly made an impact in both the Maths Department and the wider school community. Much of his time was spent focused on the Sixth Form as he taught a lot of A Level Maths and Further Maths classes. He helped guide the Young Enterprise companies through set-up and kept them focused so that they could run successfully and achieve recognition for their marketing and selling in the regional competition they were entered for. He supported all House activities and was always interested to find out how they worked and what pupils enjoyed about them. Outside of school he was keen to get out and about in the great British countryside and usually had a story or two to tell of fantastic views, weather or hotels he had visited during the school holidays.

His Further Maths AS Level class were particularly sad to see him go because of the clear explanations he provided for them.

He certainly enjoyed teaching at St George’s and we enjoyed the brief time he spent with us. We wish him much happiness in his retirement.

MRS ALISON WATSON It was with huge sadness that at the end of the Summer Term we said goodbye on her retirement to Mrs Alison Watson, our longest-serving and much-loved singing teacher. Alison has devoted 20 years of her time, energy, skill and consummate musicianship to countless girls and to the work of the Music Department, and we are most grateful for all she has done. For 10 of those years she conducted the Junior Choir

and established them as an important part of the annual Carol Service at Windsor, and for all of those years she has been a sage advisor, a wise guide and an inspiring teacher and great encourager of young voices.

Alison is always modest and self-effacing, but her own teaching is based on a wellgrounded and first-class musical background.

She read Music at Durham University, followed by postgraduate study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.

She sang with Glyndebourne Opera as well as various other touring companies, and her recital work included many first performances including "By all these" by Elizabeth Lutyens and experimental mixed media events at the National Theatre and BAC. Memorable career moments included singing in Dutch in Holland, wearing a pink body stocking as Cupid for a touring production of “Venus and Adonis”, and being asked by Radio 4 to sing as an “over-the-top” opera singer for a comedy programme!

Many girls and the school as a whole owe Alison enormous thanks, for her genuine devotion, her professional approach to all things and her willingness to enthusiastically help all our young musicians, whether this has been giving extra lessons in preparation for singing exams, coaching for leading roles in musicals or being the experienced hand on countless music tours. We will miss Alison but hope she enjoys a long and happy retirement with her husband.

HELEN WOODWARD Miss Helen Woodward, known universally as Matron by the girls, had a dual role in school. She arrived in 2012 and was both an Assistant Housemistress in Markham and Matron in the Medical Centre, supporting Sister Horth. She was Mrs Hetherington’s “right-hand lady”, taking charge of Markham House when Mrs Hetherington was off duty as well as supporting her with the daily running of the boarding house. The girls respected her for being a good listener and for having a common-sense approach to life. She could be a good shoulder to cry on but also had a sense of fun and jollity. She was famous for her tea-and-chat evenings but also ran many other activities for the boarders in the evenings and weekends. Eric, her large and rather elderly tabby cat, was much loved by the girls.

During the day she was in the medical centre. With a background in psychiatric nursing, her calm demeanour gave us all reassurance that all would be well, whatever the crisis.

Helen Woodward left St. George’s in April 2015 to return to work in a more senior role with younger girls at her previous school.

It is not only the girls who will miss the support of their much-loved Matron, but also many staff for whom she was a trusted friend and colleague.

SCHOOL NEWS TOP A LEVEL AND GCSE RESULTS St George’s achieved excellent A Level results again this year (89% A* to C, with 72% A*, A and B), with many individual students gaining outstanding grades, as well as entrance to some of the leading UK and US universities. Mrs Owens said: “Reflecting on what our students have attained shows what a rounded education we offer here at St George’s. Not only have the girls gained excellent academic results, but these pupils have been empowered

to achieve personal excellence and really follow their aspirations."

St George’s also gained some outstanding GCSE results: 51% of all exams were graded A* and A, 78% were A*, A and B, and 96% were graded A*-C. Mrs Owens observed that: “We are fortunate here at St George’s that we have some inspirational staff who excite intellectual curiosity and provide a stimulating and happy environment; this is ideal for learning.”

MEDICAL DAY On Friday 26 September 2014, Mr Alok Misra, Consultant at the Heatherwood and Wexham Park Trust, hosted a medical and ethical debating competition at St George's for thirteen schools. The schools which took part included Langley Academy, RGS Guildford, Queen Anne’s School, Caversham, Luckley House, Leighton Park, The Marist, Reading School, The Abbey School, Headington School, Oxford, Ranelagh, Tudor Hall, Langley Grammar, Farnborough College and, of course, host school St George’s. The event was also attended by local MP, Adam Afriyie, who gave a short speech to the pupils.

The event aimed to encourage Sixth Formers from both the state and independent sector in the area who are looking to go on to study Medicine, or related medical subjects

or university courses, to debate current and challenging issues. Many of the topics considered were similar to those discussed during university medical interviews and the competition aimed to give the pupils valuable practice sessions.

Said Mr Misra: “Public speaking doesn’t come naturally to everyone and isn’t easy to teach. A medical debating competition, however, involves arguing the case for or against a controversial medical topic with an audience in front of you. It is a fun way to develop the necessary speaking skills that boost confidence in situations such as an interview. What is more, it is an excellent way for those who don’t feel so confident about public speaking to become those that do, by the end of the day!”

ETON CEILIDH As ever, our new Lower Sixth ended their first week with a magnificent ceilidh with the boys from Eton College. With live music, lots of dancing, wonderful food and excellent company, it was enjoyed by all.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES DIWALI DAY On 8 November, girls coming into the Third Year were invited to spend the day with the Religious Studies Department learning about Diwali and the gods Rama and Sita, discovering Rangoli patterns and trying their hand at Indian cooking.

The day was a great success and enjoyed by all. Thank you to Mrs Magill for organising the day.

INTERACTIVE FRENCH THEATRE SHOW On 25 November, the First and Second Year girls, along with pupils from Collingwood College, Camberley, watched an energetic French play from The Flying Theatre Company at St George’s School.

CHRISTMAS JUMPERS On 9 December, staff celebrated the festive season with a wear-your-Christmas-jumper day. There were many colourful and amusing jumpers on show!

The girls were tasked with designing the programme for the play, with the winning cover drawn by Ruby Nolan.

The interactive performance of “Bon Voyage” was set on a beach in Biarritz, where two cousins were travelling on a sunny surfing holiday. Throughout the sing-a-long and entertaining play, a variety of French vocabulary was included, to help the pupils put what they are learning into context.

Vocabulary topics included food, weather, numbers, time, gender, parts of the body, directions and many more aspects of life.

The girls, as well as the pupils from Collingwood College, very much enjoyed the play and felt it was a really useful experience.

CHESS MATCH On Thursday 12 January, First Year pupil Laura Davidson received an invitation from Wellington College to attend a lecture and play a simultaneous chess match with Garry Kasparov, former World Chess Champion, writer and political activist, considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time. Laura played for two hours before retiring. A terrific achievement, Laura: very well done!

Laura has won both the English and British girls' chess championships; she plays for Berkshire and very recently was the top under-12 girl at a by-invitation-only South of England tournament.

STATE SCHOOLS OUTREACH PROGRAMME St George’s has recently formed education partnerships with three local state schools.

The aim of the initiative is to share resources, ideas and good practice that will benefit the pupils in all schools involved. We are very pleased to be working with Connaught Junior School in Bagshot, Whitegrove Primary School in Warfield and Collingwood College in Camberley.

Since September, we have worked on a number of exciting activities. For example, fourteen members of the Lower Sixth Form visited Whitegrove to work on literacy and numeracy with Year One and Two pupils.

As mentioned on page 16 of “The Dragon”, Madame Burrows hosted 28 Year Seven Modern Foreign Languages pupils from Collingwood for a visiting performance of an interactive French play, which developed the learning of pupils from both schools.

We look forward to strengthening these links and collaborating on many more exciting events and projects in the future.

AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGE As has now become the norm, we bade farewell in January to two Third Years, Hetta Loughlin and Alice Hayward, as they jetted off to Australia to spend a term at St Catherine's School in Melbourne. They had a fantastic time on their exchange, as you can see from the accompanying pictures.

After Easter, their exchange partners from St Catherine’s, Issy Binstead and Annabel Joubert, came to St George’s for the Summer Term. They stayed with their host families and, despite not encountering the British outback, were able to explore some of the delights of St George’s School and England.

The whole exchange has been a great success for pupils from both schools.

The St George's new Director in Residence, Miss McCann, has been taking Lower Sixth Form Drama scholars to work at Connaught and, as well as SMSC activities, the girls directed and developed a piece of performance work involving pupils from the school’s pupil parliament.

Youth Speaks competition

HOUSE DECLAMATION On 27 November, the bi-annual School House Declamation took place. The theme of this year's competition was “Past, Present and Future”, with each House performing their own dramatic interpretation of the theme.

Alexander House performed “Dreams and Inspirations”, Becket performed “War”, Churchill House performed “Concept” and Darwin House performed “Stages of Life”.

Mr Justin Nolan from Eton College judged the performances. After much deliberation, Mr Nolan announced the results of the competition as follows: Alexander and Becket House came in joint third place, Churchill House was awarded second place, and the winners were Darwin House.

YOUTH SPEAKS COMPETITION On 24 November, St George's hosted the local heat of The Rotary Club of Ascot National “Youth Speaks” Competition.

HOUSE DEBATING COMPETITION On Thursday 12 February, the annual House Debating event took place. This is a House team competition with three pupils per team.

Twelve teams competed for a place in the area final. St George's were the winning intermediate team with a talk on “Social Media - a disease that needs a cure”.

The competition began with Churchill House proposing and Becket House opposing the motion that "The pursuit of happiness is making us miserable". The second debate proposed by Darwin House discussed the motion that “Freedom of expression must include the right to offend”, with Alexander House opposing this statement.

Finalists, Churchill House (proposing) and Darwin House (opposing), debated the idea that "Queen Elizabeth should be our last monarch".

Best Individual Intermediate Speaker was awarded to Sophia Lyons of St George's.

Staff and fellow pupils listened to all of the points put across by the finalists, with Mr Carroll and Mrs Witt adjudicating the debate. Darwin House were announced the winners of the Catherine Dyer Trophy (Catherine was a Head of Sixth Form who sadly died in service in 2011 and who loved debating).

Dragons in thoughtful mode

DRAGONS’ DEN On Thursday 20 November, the St George's Sue Cormack Hall was transformed into a “Dragons' Den” studio set.

The Lower Sixth budding entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas in order to secure investment from a panel of Georgian Dragons.

Following the “Dragons' Den” competition, the “company” belonging to each group of girls set up a pop-up shop, selling their products at the Bracknell Young Enterprise programme to celebrate Small Business Saturday in the town. Their products included fruit infusers, sweatshirts and t-shirts.

ENGLISH EDUCATION DAY On Saturday 21 March, the English Department organised an Education Day for pupils from local primary and preparatory schools. All members of the English Department were on hand to assist pupils in their development of designs for literary theme parks (a terrific idea conceived by Mrs Jones). Also taking part in the day were Sixth Form pupils who study English Literature.

There was a great atmosphere about the day, and the thirty or so pupils who took part (including a couple of brave boys from local schools) went home with prizes for their efforts, and a good idea of the ways in which literature helps to build the imagination, as well as a practical attitude towards life (how else might one design a “Harry Potter� theme park?). Many thanks indeed to all of the staff and pupils who took part in this very successful and enjoyable day.

HOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION On Tuesday 24 March, the annual House Music Competition took place, involving the whole school.

Performances included a House song, a solo piece, a duet, an ensemble and a group performance of the girls' choice to complete their entries.

Mr Hillier was joined by Music Teacher Mr Nigel Hutchinson from St Mary's School in Ascot to help adjudicate the competition.

After much deliberation, Darwin House were announced as the winners.

VISITING SPEAKERS

DR JOANN DEAK At the start of December, we were privileged to host Dr JoAnn Deak, who spoke to the girls, staff and parents about the female brain. Dr Deak is a world authority on brain behaviour in adolescents, but it is her ability to convey complex scientific concepts in an accessible way which is truly impressive.

Dr Deak discussed with the girls the fact that no brain is the same size and that it is the luck of the draw which size you have. However, the brain is like a muscle and, if you don’t use it properly and in various ways, it not only lies dormant but gets smaller.

Dr Deak, who has spent over 40 years researching the brain, discussed learning styles and the importance of not just teaching to the girls’ strengths – aurally, visually or kinaesthetically – but also ensuring the girls are stretched by making them train their brains to develop in ways in which they are not so strong.

The pastoral needs of girls were contemplated, and Dr Deak stated that self-esteem is the best predictor of girls’ happiness in life – a statement that was echoed by many of the staff at St George’s.

This is not the same for boys. In addition, the importance of sleep was discussed and the growth of the brain at night. Dr Deak explained that teenagers are programmed to be able to work better later in the evening and should be enabled to sleep longer in the mornings, as during the night there are different areas of the brain growing at different times.

COL JAMES CUNLIFFE We were fortunate to have a sensational lecture by Colonel James Cunliffe in the Autumn Term. He has enjoyed a stunning career in the Army and United Nations.

Colonel Cunliffe spoke with clarity and erudition to a packed audience about his role in United Nations peacekeeping, and was keen to stress the very many opportunities for women in the modern Army.

Colonel Cunliffe, educated at Epsom College and Cranfield University, was commissioned into the British Army in 1978. Initially, he served as a platoon commander in the Royal Green Jackets, deployed for the first time on operations in Northern Ireland.

He also served with the United Nations in Afghanistan in 2002/2003 as a military adviser to the Secretary General’s Special Representative (Lakhdar Brahimi), as a Divisional Chief of Staff in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (2008/2009), and is currently in the UN HQ in New York, where he is the Special Assistant to the Military Adviser, Lieutenant General Maqsood Ahmed (Pakistan), within the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

Colonel Cunliffe discussed the contrast between life in war-torn countries and our country, and explained the services of the UN and our peacekeeping missions. The girls were incredibly attentive and asked lots of very pertinent questions.

MR NICK GOUGH Pupils, parents, staff, alumnae and friends were warmly invited to the Headmistress's Lecture on Wednesday 28 January at 7.00pm.

Nick Gough gave a superb lecture on his adventures, travelling the world in a tuk tuk, or auto rickshaw. He and a friend decided that they wanted to raise awareness of educational projects around the world and, without any prior mechanical or driving knowledge, bought a tuk tuk and commenced their travels in India, having taken a sabbatical from their jobs. Nick explained some of the excellent enterprises they viewed, including a man in Africa who encouraged elderly women to start a business, and schools for children who had never been schooled before – all of which he found deeply affecting.

By filming, blogging and photographing these projects, Nick and his friend generated much-needed funds for the projects they encountered, using an online giving website back in the UK. Nick also talked about some of the crazy adventures he and his friend had, including getting stuck in a mud bath in Africa, having to push their tuk tuk in the Andes, and being chased by children, and he told us how, in particularly dangerous parts of the world, they shipped the tuk tuk to avoid confrontation.

“POSITIVE VOICE” TALK On Thursday 5 March, Emma Coles gave a talk to the Lower Sixth Form girls about living with HIV. Since being diagnosed HIV positive in 1991, Emma has chosen to speak publicly about HIV for the past 24 years. In 2002 she launched her "Positive Voice" Education and Awareness talks and now speaks annually at over 100 schools across the UK. Emma began by explaining that having a positive and comical attitude is key to her life! She continued to tell the girls how she contracted HIV and about her personal experiences to date. Emma also highlighted that over 700 teenagers, of 16 years old and under, in the UK are suffers of HIV, and an astonishing 22,000 people in the UK have HIV, but don't know it.

Not only was Emma very open to talking about her experiences, but her natural ability to tell the story and the humour she used to emphasise certain elements were inspiring. Not one of the girls or staff would have walked away from the talk and forgotten her tale.

The girls, parents and staff really enjoyed the talk and there were many questions at the end.

Dozens and dozens of trips have taken place this year. Here are the details of just a few of them.

WILLIAMSBURG The Sixth Form enjoyed a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia, USA during the Autumn Half Term break in October 2014.

The girls (and two boys from a school in Northampton, with whom we have an independent/state school partnership) attended lectures and seminars and made use of the University Library as well as visiting Washington DC, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.

The girls enjoyed a delicious meal at the Hard Rock CafĂŠ in Washington DC, walked the Mall, and visited Arlington National Cemetery and many of the Mall museums.

In Williamsburg, the girls learned about what is involved in mastering the skills needed to perform to a full house, as well as receiving lessons from a dance instructor to learn about dance techniques of the 18th Century in Virginia. They also watched a re-enactment on the street of the turbulent scenes in the days leading up to the outbreak of the American War of Independence.

Their visit to Jamestown Island included a visit to an archaeological site and the new Jamestown Museum. The girls participated in a dramatised inquiry into the charges of witchcraft brought against Grace Sherwood in 1706. The audience was invited to question the witnesses, weigh the evidence, and determine the guilt or innocence of "The Virginia Witch". Thank you to all of the staff for taking time out of their Half Term to accompany the girls on these excursions.

As mentioned above, there were also two boys in the party. Over the page you can read the report by one of the boys (James Warner) from Weston Favell Academy, Northampton, with whom we have entered a partnership. This is his version of the experience for his own school's newsletter. It offers, as you will see, a nice summary of the trip.

Washington DC

WILLIAMSBURG TRIP THROUGH THE EYES OF JAMES WARNER During this October I was given a fantastic opportunity to travel to America with a fellow student, Jack Cox, and a group of students from St George’s, an independent girls’ school in Ascot. The History trip included attending lectures and seminars on various periods of history at the College of William and Mary, one of the oldest universities in America, and also using the University’s amazing library to help us research for our school work, visiting Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown and visiting Washington DC and all of its iconic sites.

We started off by visiting Washington DC for the first few days. On the first day we went for a late evening walk to take in the famous sites that Washington DC has to offer, from the Capitol building to walking the mall towards the Washington Memorial then to the White House. We enjoyed a meal in the Hard Rock Café on the first night, presenting an opportunity for us to bond with the girls.

The next two days we absorbed all that Washington has to offer, exploring the Vietnam War Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial, one of the most iconic memorials in the world.

Later on this day we were given a free choice of the mall museums, and left to explore the history these had to offer. With such an opportunity it was hard to visit all the museums but Jack and I only managed the three. In the evening we all went to a local cinema to watch a new cinema

release. On our final day in Washington DC we visited Arlington National Cemetery, paying our respects to fallen American heroes, visiting the graves of John F Kennedy and his family (including that of his younger brother Robert Kennedy), and finally we observed the changing of the guard protecting the unknown soldier’s tomb.

We then moved on to Williamsburg in Virginia, the home of Colonial Williamsburg (a delightful recreation of the area from the 18th century) and the College of William and Mary. As a group we made various trips to Colonial Williamsburg, exploring the various re-created buildings. Many of the buildings were open to the public and many of the workers were in character, so we grasped an idea of what life would have been like in the area. Along with exploring the buildings there were many dramatized re-enactments of events such as “the revolution in the street” following the days leading up to the outbreak of the War of Independence; we also attended an 18th century courthouse, in which the audience participated in various trials of the time, and finally came my favourite, the dramatized inquiry into charges of witchcraft in which it was up to us, as the audience, to determine whether the accused was guilty or innocent.

In the surrounding area of Williamsburg are Jamestown, the first permanent British settlement in the United States, and Yorktown, which was the scene of a decisive battle in the American War of Independence – the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. During our trip we were lucky enough to visit both. Venturing through

Jamestown was fascinating, with a recreation of a Native American settlement leading on to three reconstructed vessels that brought the first settlers to Virginia 400 years ago. Then finally on to James Fort, a settlement where the first settlers would have lived and worked together with limited trading and supplies, forcing the first trading with the Natives.

Visiting Yorktown was very different; it focused on the Siege of Yorktown, so we saw recreations of war encampments of the period, American celebrations but also demonstrations of Colonial-style weaponry that would have been used to defeat the British.

Finally, the most important part of the trip was student life. Thanks to the connections of the teacher from St George’s, Mr Trevor Sharkey, whom we can’t thank enough for presenting such an opportunity, we were able to attend numerous lectures and seminars on a variety of historical topics, such as a seminar on Slavery, a lecture on Modern Chinese History, and a lecture on Colonial North America. These opened my eyes to the depth of historical study at university and have helped me to adapt the way I perceive History for further education. Apart from being able to attend lectures and seminars, we were also given full access to the University library, giving us the opportunity to gather resources for coursework but also personal reading.

We were also given access to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Library, which contained multiple primary sources from the 17th century, such as an original letter

from the King of Spain to his advisors, which we had the opportunity to see and hold.

However, the trip to Williamsburg was not all study; we were given multiple afternoons and a vacation day to fully explore the area. Luckily the vacation day came on a Saturday so Jack and I, along with some of the girls, were able to attend a College football match (American football that is). The outlet mall was only a short bus ride away and so we were able to get some discounted clothing, and in the evening we were even able to attend a concert on campus to mix with some of the students from the College of William and Mary.

We would like to thank St George’s School for allowing us to join their trip, giving us an incredible experience, with a special thanks to Mr Trevor Sharkey for presenting us with this opportunity and Miss Lydia Jackson, who accompanied us on this trip. We would also like to thank Weston Favell Academy for allowing us this time off and Mr May, who was the source of the connection with St George’s.

Neasden Mandir Temple

We would like to thank St George’s School for allowing us to join their trip, giving us an incredible experience, with a special thanks to Mr Trevor Sharkey for presenting us with this opportunity.

NEASDEN MANDIR TEMPLE On 28 November, Third Year Religious Studies pupils visited the Neasden Hindu Temple (the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir) in London.

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is an inspiring building of traditional Hindu design and exquisite workmanship. Using 5,000 tonnes of Italian Carrara and Ambaji marble with the finest Bulgarian limestone, the Mandir was hand-carved in India before being assembled in London in June 1993.

Over 3,000 volunteers, inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, contributed to making the Mandir a reality.

It was – and continues to be – funded entirely by worshippers and well-wishers.

The visit included a talk and short video about Hinduism and the Mandir, plus an exhibition and a chance to experience an Arti Ceremony, one of the most popular ceremonies of the Hindu faith.

Pupils Hetta Loughlin and Punch Suwannakit reflected on their visit: "The atmosphere of the Mandir is calming and serene. It makes you feel relaxed due to the incredible silence, spiritual music and the beautiful marble work. We really enjoyed the trip and we would like to thank Mrs Magill for organising the trip and the volunteers at the Mandir for looking after us so well."

MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE From Friday 30 January until Sunday 1 February, St George's entered the Model United Nations (MUN) Conference at The Lady Eleanor Holles School.

Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations, which aims to educate participants about current events, effective communication, globalisation and diplomacy.

Pupils took on roles as diplomats, investigated international issues, debated, deliberated and developed solutions to world problems.

The conference helped to develop the girls’ communication and critical thinking skills, including public speaking, research, policy analysis, negotiating, conflict resolution and note-taking.

GLOBE THEATRE VISIT On Monday 9 February, Upper Sixth Form pupils visited Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London as part of their A Level Drama Examination.

The Globe stands a few hundred yards from its original site. The rebuilding stems from the founding of Shakespeare's Globe Trust by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker. Its annual season combines Shakespeare classics as they were meant to be seen, along with plays by the most gifted new writers. However, education is at the heart of the Globe Theatre. With a year-round programme of Learning, Research, Courses, Projects and Events, over 100,000 pupils and teachers visit every year.

RS VENICE TRIP On Saturday 21 February, during Half Term, Third, Fourth and Fifth Year pupils departed for a Religious Studies trip to Venice.

Mrs Magill, Dr Tieanu and Miss Moore accompanied the girls for a long weekend to explore the alluring city which is steeped in cultural and architectural gems. It is made up of hundreds of small islands and is well renowned for gondolas, bridges and pasta.

The girls visited the Bridge of Sighs, the Rialto Bridge, St Mark’s Square and a Murano glass manufacturer.

Venice has also played an important role in religion over the years and it has an abundance of important religious sites.

SUPPORTING WOMEN'S RIGHTS The Amnesty International group has been working on women's rights throughout the world, especially in Afghanistan.

St George's has been supporting the Amnesty International Campaign to ensure Afghan women can take part in the peace processes.

The Amnesty International group has also been participating in the “Write for Rights” Campaign, for which the girls made Christmas cards to send to prisoners who have been held in solitary confinement without trial.

SAMARITAN'S PURSE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD This year, the whole school once again supported the Samaritan's Purse “Operation Christmas Child” campaign.

THE GREAT ST GEORGE'S “BAKE OFF” Fourth Year girls raised money for charity during the Spring Term by holding their own “Great British Bake Off” competition.

Girls from all years filled a shoebox with gifts for underprivileged children, which included toys, toiletries, stationery and clothes.

Each Year Group wished to help The Malala Foundation, Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and Sebastian's Action Trust, who received an equal share of the money raised by the whole school after the Autumn Term.

This year the school filled a superb 38 boxes, which have been sent to Romania.

DONATION TO READS SCHOOL IN INDIA As a result of over £1,400 being raised by the Friends of St George's, and also girls' fundraising activities in 2013/14, for the READS Public School in Dundlod, India, we are proud to announce that the Parent Association will make a further very generous donation of £2,000 to the school in India. Donations of this value can pay a teacher's salary for a year.

PUPILS GIVE LESSONS TO STAFF Towards the end of the academic year, the First Year decided that it would be a good idea to raise some money for charity by giving lessons to members of staff, and being sponsored for their efforts. Their proposals may be seen in the accompanying picture. It should be mentioned that Mrs Magill bravely played the violin during a Chapel service, showing us all how well she had been taught. Well done, girls, for taking up the challenge!

The “Bake Off” competition consisted of different heats in which Form Groups competed against one another in baking challenges, including baking and decorating cupcakes.

The final heat saw the Fourth Year Tutors battling it out to decorate a cake.

Congratulations to Mr Rhodes (known for his skill with a pipette in the laboratory) for winning the final.

OLIVER! The principal whole-school production for this year was “Oliver!� The First Year through to the Upper Sixth and the Drama and Music Departments of St George's provided a stunning production of the show for four consecutive nights from 13 to 16 October.

The production was very well attended, and proved to be a great success, with many audience members commenting on how professional the performances of the girls were. There was some excellent characterisation, with great dance routines, moving solos and spectacular chorus numbers!

Congratulations to the Creative Director Mr Carroll, Musical Director Mr Hillier, Technical Director Mr Pearn, as well as Director Mrs Gregan and Stage Manager Miss McCann.

SLEEPING BEAUTY On 2 December, the First Year girls gave a pantomime performance of the classic fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty�.

St George's welcomed an audience of 270 staff and pupils from Connaught Junior School and Whitegrove Primary School.

The schools were invited to an afternoon performance as part of the State School Outreach Programme. There was also a performance for parents in the evening.

Naturally, each performance had plenty of audience participation, with acrobatic mice, a very colourful "good" Queen and a suitably evil Queen!

St George's received a letter of thanks from Izzy Cox at Connaught Junior School: "From the singing to the acrobatics and the lighting to the acting, this is probably the panto of the season!" High praise indeed!

Well done to all the girls and thanks to Miss McCann and Mr Carroll for a superb pantomime.

On Friday 27 February, Alexander House held their annual party.

The theme of the evening was the Chinese New Year. The dining room was decorated with bright lanterns and China-inspired murals.

The girls performed a variety of dances, individual and group music pieces, a comedy sketch, the Alexander House Declamation routine and the House song “Shine” by Take That, which was sung by all of the girls.

Everyone who attended had a wonderful time, and thank you to Miss Jackson for organising the evening. As with all of the House Parties, Mr Cornish and his team were responsible for the decorations and delicious meal; and as always, Mr Russell Pearn took care of the sound, lighting and stage effects.

On Friday 30 January, pupils, staff and parents enjoyed an evening of award-winning food, plus a performance by the girls belonging to Churchill House. The theme of the evening was Roald Dahl's “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. The dining room was decorated with colourful sweet decorations, with chocolate treats at every turn. In keeping with the Roald Dahl theme, the girls performed “Matilda” to staff and parents at the end of the evening.

The theme of the evening was Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby”. The dining room was decorated with luxurious gold decorations, with sparkling wine and decadence at every turn.

The girls performed various dances, and there were some individual music pieces by Chloe Smithyes and Georgia Cooper, the winning Darwin House Declamation performance and the House song to staff and parents at the end of the evening.

MUSIC Music continues to be a fundamental part of life at St George’s; it continues to grow and its position of importance flourishes.

Never was this more in evidence than for the two days before the Autumn Term 2014 started: “Oliver!” rehearsals had started; with packed lunches and packed days, the production got off to a really super start and one of the most popular musicals of modern times promised to be one of our best productions. Pictures of this feature elsewhere in this edition of “The Dragon”, and I should like to mention here just how hard everyone worked and what a fantastic show it was. The Drama and Music Departments work superbly together and it

is right to celebrate such good collaboration, because it is to everyone’s credit. My special thanks to Miss May and Mrs Watson for their coaching of many soloists and to the superb band who played so well for all four performances. Weeks of hard work were justified when just before half term on 13, 14, 15 and 16 October, the production was all everyone could have imagined.

Normal musical life continued side by side with “Oliver!”. The new term saw many new girls starting instrumental or singing lessons and the first of the year’s Sunday services was the Harvest Festival on 14 September, followed by the traditional Harvest supper; both were super and it was good to see so many new parents in Chapel.

Immediately the half term holiday had ended the Chapel Choir were honoured once again to sing Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral, London on 3 November. A new setting of the responses went well and the Choir’s favourite, "How can I keep from singing?", originally arranged by John Scott for the St Paul’s Choir, sounded perfect, with a number of those spine-tingling moments.

Later that same week GCSE and A Level musicians attended a performance of Mozart’s Requiem in London on 5 November, and on 6 November we held our annual Music School Open Evening, with an opportunity for parents to meet instrumental teachers and the opportunity also to hear a short concert. Georgia Cooper, Lily Caines and Camelia JoelDavison all sang, Seojin Park and CK Choi played flute solos, Annabel Sheridan and Maria Gushchina played piano solos, Song Birds and First year Choir sang, and both Flute Group and a small violin ensemble of Laura Beaumont, Annabel Sheridan and Daisy Tibbatts also performed beautifully.

Each year I am simply more and more amazed at what Georgians achieve in all the challenging but ultimately rewarding musical areas of life that they commit to and where their enthusiasm, imagination and energy seemingly know no bounds.

Each year I struggle with this report to find more adjectives to praise their efforts and attainments; each year I have more to praise, more to continue to encourage and more to thank them for, because music continues to be a fundamental part of life at St George’s; it continues to grow and its position of importance flourishes.

On Sunday 9 November we held our moving service of Readings and Music for Remembrance Sunday; my grateful thanks to all the fathers who read so effectively.

Our Remembrance observation continued with Compline the following night and a full-school Act of Remembrance on the Tuesday morning at 10.55 a.m.

Friday 21 November saw our Autumn Junior Concert with lovely performances from Ellie Pusey, Victoria Wyatt, Ruby Winter, Leila Bennett, Elizabeth Shegurova, Anna Ewens, Sophia Lyons and Annabel Sheridan, and on Tuesday 25 November our GCSE and A Level pupils attended a workshop on the use of electronic music.

The flavour of music became more festive with our enchanting and candlelit Advent Carol Service on Sunday 30 November; this is the point when I permit myself to start thinking about Christmas, and my thanks to all the mums I persuaded into reading!

The Chapel Choir were delighted again to sing carols at Coworth Park Hotel on Wednesday 3 December. Singing in such wonderfully decorated surroundings with a marvellously appreciative audience, followed by our own Christmas Dinner Carols in Chapel on Tuesday 9 December, made for a really uplifting week.

The festive spirit culminated in our Carol service in Windsor on Wednesday 10 December. I hope we will never underestimate or under-appreciate this opportunity each year for the whole Georgian community to celebrate Christmas together. It truly is such an amazing occasion, and for an increasing number of people it really symbolises Christmas at its best.

The New Year started with Epiphany carols on Friday 16 January and then our unique and evocative Candlemas service on Sunday 1 February. My thanks to the Chapel Choir, who always seem to mark every occasion with matchless and hauntingly beautiful singing. Thanks again to parents who read and Mr Cornish and his team for amazing refreshments.

The Spring Term saw two new appointments as Miss May had to reduce her teaching load owing to other commitments. Miss Cathy Mason comes to us from Lord Wandsworth College as our new Assistant Director of Music and the team of visiting music staff increases as Miss Hannah Sandison joins us to teach singing. I hope both will be really happy here at St George’s.

Our Spring Concert took place on 25 February and the girls presented a delightful and varied programme, from Eliza Ballin singing "How could I ever know?", to Ruth Taviansky playing the theme from "Le Strength" by Paganini on the violin. Junior Choir sang "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "The Gospel Train", Olivia Clouting sang "The Second Star to the Right", and Daisy Tibbatts and Annabel Sheridan played the Concerto for two violins by Vivaldi. Angela Liao played Ginastera’s "Danza de la moza donosa" and the Chapel choir sang pieces

by Dyson, Ireland and Rutter.

The annual Confirmation service took place in chapel on Saturday 7 March and we were delighted to welcome three candidates from All Saints’, Ascot and also a new bishop in the shape of Bishop Bill Downs, who entertainingly has published a book of graces – well worth a read!

The end of the Spring Term saw the annual, exciting and musically fun-filled, no-stressinducing, House Music competition on 24 March with the concert of highlights on 25 March. Preparations and the competition were committed and closely fought, and while the result is not the important thing, Darwin won! This year’s adjudicator was Mr Nigel Hutchison from St Mary’s School and it was a real reflection of a school’s great music-making. Items that must get a mention include: "When she Loved me" sung by Camelia Joel-Davison, "Pretty Funny" sung by Kate Gibb, Darwin House song "One Way or Another", a Chopin Nocturne played on the piano by Karyna Dudnyk, and "Revolting Children", the Churchill House Special Item.

Of two new additions to the summer calendar, the first was a special St George’s service which took place on Sunday 26 April; it was appropriately thoughtful, celebratory, patriotic and original all in equal measure. Mr Hillier gave his third and last late-night piano recital of the year, “Nocturne”, on 5 May, sending a few sleepy listeners off for a peaceful night following an all-Bach programme, and in contrast Thursday 7 May saw our regular evening of Jazz and Dance. Many thanks to the Jazz Ensemble and Mr Smith, the Ballet teacher Miss Haigh, the modern dance teacher Miss Ward, Mr Pearn for all his lighting and special effects, and all the girls who took part. It was totally absorbing and of such a high standard.The Junior Summer Concert took place on Wednesday 13 May. This concert is always a great indication of the potential of our younger soloists, and

this year true to form, there were some very promising appearances, including great performances from Susie Jeffery, Lily Corkchi, Natalie Phan, Louisa HughesPenney, Julia Cherry, Ruby Carty-Din and Sasha Lemon. Also of special note was the wonderful performance of Sonata in E minor by Veracini played by Issy Binstead, our visiting exchange pupil from Australia, a young violinist of rare talent.

The second new addition to the term’s calendar was the St George’s Arts Festival on 25 June, a celebration of the Creative and Performing Arts at St George’s. The musical contributions included Issy Binstead playing the Veracini for a second time, an Instrumental Group playing a Brahms Hungarian Dance, Maria Guschina playing "Blue Air" composed by Madeleine Dring, and the Flute group playing Diabelli and Williams.

Tuesday 30 June saw the Twenty-Ninth Music for a Summer’s Evening, in many ways the highlight of the musical year and certainly a musical goodbye to those leaving at the end of term. Moving solos from Grace Woodward, Georgia Cooper and Issy Binstead reminded us how much we will miss them and other leaving girls, and what an important part all the girls play in our musical life and the family life that is St George’s.

A week in the life of St George’s is a busy place; it’s a busy place musically as well and I apologise if I have missed anything or anyone out in this year’s review. There is always something new, always an achievement small or big to take notice of, something to generate a smile and be pleased with. Always something different like this year’s new addition to Chapel services of “Desert Island Discs”, where someone discusses with me his or her lifechanging choice of music.

With the Valedictory service and Prize Giving on Thursday 2 July and the Chapel Choir again providing fitting, lovely, moving and impressive music for both, there ended another wonderful, inspiring and fabulous year. I know as we order copies of the score of "Les Misérables" for next term’s musical, next year will be just as exciting. With your continued enthusiasm and dedication, it cannot be anything else.

FIRST YEAR DISCOVERY DAY During school activity week the First Years took part in a sports discovery day. The day consisted of the year group learning the skills of several sports, beginning with dodgeball, which pleased the girls immensely, and all of the girls played with great spirit. Following on from dodgeball, the girls had the opportunity to learn the skills of touch rugby and archery, with the day finishing off with them receiving some excellent coaching tips from a potential Rio 2015 Olympian!

A great day was had by all.

SPORT

ATHLETICS COACHING COURSE WITH CYLE CARTY (GB ATHLETE) Again this year we were lucky enough to have Cyle Carty come to school to offer our girls a morning of athletics coaching. This year the focus was on long and triple jump as well as discus and relay changeovers.

Several girls took up this excellent opportunity to receive an extra morning of coaching, and their performances throughout the morning improved in all events. All of the girls enjoyed themselves and worked hard throughout the session.

Following on from previous courses, Devon Mather was asked to attend training throughout the summer with an elite group of up-and-coming, talented girls, which shows that attending courses such as this is an excellent way to get yourself recognised.

We hope to continue our link with Cyle next year and look forward to seeing many of you at the 2016 session.

GIRLS GO GOLD CONFERENCE On 18 September, the Fifth Year girls taking GCSE PE went to St Catherine’s School, Bramley for the Girls Go Gold Conference.

The morning started with a very inspirational talk by Baroness Tanni GreyThompson, who is a former wheelchair racer and is now a parliamentarian and television presenter. She competed in five Paralympic games and won sixteen medals.

She spoke about the highs and lows of her career and the difficulties she had to face being a woman in elite sport. The talk was very motivating and she is a great influence for young girls to do their best and thrive in sporting careers.

We then broke into smaller groups and attended mini seminars about different topics to do with sport, such as injuries, nutrition, sport science, and universities, and there was a talk from Tasmin Greenway, an English netball player. All of the seminars we attended were very thought-provoking and helped us identify the range of career opportunities available to us in the sporting arena.

After lunch we were given a presentation from Mark Pain, a professional sports photographer. He is famous for being the Olympic Photographer of the Year for his work at London 2012 Games. The conference ended with a talk from Anna Watkins, an Olympic rower who won a Gold medal in the London 2012 Games in the double skulls with her partner Katherine Grainger. She spoke very well and motivated us all to work hard at the sports we love.

Overall we had an amazing experience attending this conference and would recommend it to the GCSE PE pupils next year. Thank you to Mrs Collingwood for organising this experience, which I am sure we will all remember.

Emily Hughes MOTHER AND DAUGHTER NETBALL TOURNAMENT On 6 September the annual Mother and Daughter Netball Tournament took place.

We had five teams of girls and mums take part, which is an excellent turn-out. The girls played in the same teams as their mums and showed some great teamwork.

It was an extremely fun morning and also provided the opportunity for new parents to meet and get to know each other. The winning team was the Double Deckers, which consisted of the Puseys, the Pantlins, the Thompsons and the Haywards. They showed excellent movement on court and worked hard throughout.

A special award is always given to the best mother, who is chosen by the girls who took part, and this year it was awarded to a very deserving Mrs Gregory. Thank you to everyone for attending and making the event a success.

HOUSE NETBALL Having been postponed from earlier in the term, House Netball took place on another chilly night in November. The teams arrived with enthusiasm, ready to challenge each other for this year’s title. The early match winners indicated that the tournament this year was going to be much closer than in previous years, with no House moving into a noticeable lead. There were some great performances from both the junior and senior teams, and the goals were flying in from all directions. Towards the end of the tournament there were some really close matches between some of the junior teams, which in the end would prove to be the difference between winning and coming second. At the end of the tournament Churchill House just pipped Becket House to the title, with Darwin House and Alexander House coming third and fourth respectively. Special mentions should go to Becket House Senior A team and Churchill House Senior B team for winning all of their matches, and both Darwin House Junior teams for remaining undefeated. Well done to everyone for entering the tournament in 58

HOUSE LACROSSE House Lacrosse proved to be another exhilarating House event and the girls came down focused and excited to compete. The support from the sidelines was excellent.

with both Darwin and Alexander battling it out for top spot. In the end Darwin finished unbeaten and were crowned Junior champions.

The Senior Competition also involved some close matches and a tough fight was put up by all teams competing. This time the competition was between Becket and Churchill, with Becket in the end winning their section by two points and becoming the Senior champions.

The passing and attacking play by all teams was excellent throughout, but once all of the scores and points were added up, Darwin became the overall champions for 2015.

On the first day the Juniors took to the courts. To begin with the biggest challenge was put to the Becket team, which was to try to keep the little bugs off their yellow shirts!

However, after a swift change the action was soon underway. There were some excellent performances, with the competition remaining very close throughout. However, by the end of the competition, Darwin came out on top, narrowly beating Becket by two wins.

In the Senior competition, which this year was reduced to four couples, owing to clashes with other school events, there was also a competitive edge and some of the rallies were better than those we witness at Wimbledon! However, again Darwin came out on top and finished as the overall champions for 2015. Well done to all players and we look forward to another close competition next year.

GEORGIAN GALLOP On a beautiful spring day the fourth annual Georgian Gallop took place on the sports fields. The change of venue this year, owing to the building works around school, and the flatness of the run seemed to suit many of the competitors! With the majority of the girls wearing their House shirts, the event proved both colourful and competitive.

Several members of staff also joined in the run, receiving many cheers and lots of encouragement from the girls on their way around the course. Mr Rhodes decided to run his lap in full cricket kit and thoroughly deserved the reception that he was given as he crossed the finish line.

With all of the teams challenging for the fastest team awards in both the pupil and staff categories, the afternoon was to prove competitive from start to finish.

In the now Georgian Gallop tradition, all competitors were given a St George’s flagtopped cake in recognition of their efforts when they finished.

PARTICULAR SUCCESSES PONY CLUB For the second year running, Mimo Sandford qualified for the Pony Club National Championships and recently passed her Pony Club B Test Examination.

Her examiner commented that she was one of the strongest candidates they have examined.

Everyone at St George's would like to congratulate Mimo on her achievements so far in parallel with her academic endeavours at the school.

Good luck in your future events, Mimo!

She is scheduled to take her final Pony Club and Pony Care Examinations after her GCSEs, two years before the minimum recommended age. She competes at the Novice level in her Pony Club. In recent competitions she was the only young rider to ride a pony against adults from Australia, New Zealand and Italy.

HORSE OF THE YEAR Imogen Rodger won the National Pony Society Summer Championship at Malvern in Herefordshire, which qualified her for the Horse of the Year Show at Birmingham NEC. Her class was the 133 Show Hunter Pony of the Year.

After travelling up to Birmingham on 11 October, for a cosy night in the horse box, Imogen had to be up at 3.30 am to prepare her pony, Lowland Talisman, pet name Nimrod. Imogen rode well, and came a welldeserved tenth against the best in the country.

Our next game was against Charters School and we found the opposition very strong.

Working our hardest through the match we just lost with a score of 7-6. However, we kept working together as a team and went on to win against the Brigidine 9-1 and against St Mary’s B with a great score of 13-7. Well played to everyone in the team for such hard work throughout the tournament, placing us second overall.

Mentions go to Stephanie Bankole, for her great work in defence, Esme French our captain and the shooters Alice Robbins and Scarlet Mason.

BERKSHIRE COUNTY ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS This year proved more successful than ever with four girls qualifying through their performances at the District Athletics to represent Bracknell Forest at the County Championships. Devon Mather qualified for the second year in a row for the 300 metres final, finishing third and breaking the 43-second barrier for the first time in her life! Ella Davis and Fiona Allen both finished 4th in the U17 and U15 javelin events and Olivia Aluko finished fifth in the U17 100 metres final.

Congratulations to all four girls, who all achieved personal bests on the day.

BERKSHIRE LACROSSE SELECTION Again this year St George’s was well represented in the Berkshire lacrosse U19 & U15 teams. Four girls played in the InterCounty Tournament for Berkshire, where they performed exceptionally well and did St George’s proud.

The girls who were selected were, in the Under 19 team, Octavia Mason, Anna Mason and Esme French, and in the Under 15 team, Ella Davis. Well done, girls!

ASCOT SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT On 25 February the U16 netball A team competed in the Ascot Schools’ Netball Tournament. With our first match against St George’s, Ascot B team, we won 17-0, which everyone enjoyed very much. With a promising start to the tournament, we were able to bring our enthusiasm into our following match against a tough opposition of St Mary’s A team. We won with a score of 8-5 and Rosie Fisher played a great 62

NATIONAL SCHOOLS’ LACROSSE TOURNAMENT On 27 and 28 February, the members of the U19 Lacrosse team took part in the National Schools’ Lacrosse Tournament. On the first day of the tournament the girls were up against very difficult teams. Despite the fact that the girls played against difficult opposition, they all played extremely well and gave 100 percent effort. The last game of pool play of the tournament was without a doubt their best game of the day. On Saturday, the team were able to continue their excellent play from the previous day and won all the games in their pool. This gave them the opportunity to receive a bye for the quarter finals and go straight to a semi-final game. They beat St Swithun’s easily with a score of 7-1. With this win, they went on to play in the finals of their division against Claremont. Unfortunately, they were not able to come away with the win and lost 4-3. All the girls should be extremely proud of the way they played, with great dedication and heart.

Miss K Flynn SPORTS DAY At 9.30am Sports Day was looking slightly dodgy as a sudden downpour interrupted the setting-up. However, the weather gods were on our side as the sun started to shine on the St. George’s sports fields! With parents arriving with their picnic blankets and chairs, the event finally got underway. www.stgeorges-ascot.org.uk

This year saw the introduction of the 300 metre event and also double the number of competitors entering the field events. There were some excellent performances, with Catherine Lee breaking the 100 metre D race school record.

With all of the events being completed at the start of the relays, there were only two points separating the top three Houses.

Churchill House, however, dominated the relays and eventually pulled away to become the overall champions.

Congratulations should also go to Mr Sedgwick (still unbeaten!) and Mrs Lemon for winning the Fathers’ and Mothers’ races respectively.
