Term Three has certainly started with much momentum and it was indeed wonderful to be able to acknowledge and congratulate the many successes of our students from Semester One at the Academic Awards Assembly held at St George’s Cathedral to start the term.

We celebrated academic excellence as well as attitude and effort awards as nominated by staff.

the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The engagement in these Games has certainly been phenomenal despite the lack of spectators within the stadiums. Whilst it is wonderful to see our 2020 Olympic champions acknowledged and new legends of the sporting world created, we are also seeing stories that inspire us and for me, this is what the Games are more importantly about.

We also announced our first Student Representative Committee (SRC) which will work with the Student Guild to allow all year groups to have a voice within the leadership of the school.

Our Student Mentors were also introduced at the service. These students seek to work in and around the school making a positive difference to the lives of all students ensuring students concerns are heard and supported. It was indeed a wonderful celebration of the special sense of community we share at St George’s, and I would like to thank the many families that joined us at the service.

This week we moved our celebrations to NAIDOC Week 2021 which focused on this year’s national theme, ‘Heal country’. Our service was led by Whadjuk Elder Auntie Robyn Collard Rioli who delivered a moving Welcome to Country and shared her knowledge of the importance of land and culture. We were all immersed in our very first smoking ceremony and on entering the cathedral we were inspired by the performance of Tryce Rioli on the didgeridoo. It was a wonderfully powerful and moving service.

• The 4 x 100m women’s medley relay of Kaylee McKeown, Chelsea Hodges, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell taking out the gold medal by a touch.

• Jessica Fox winning the C1 gold medal after her disappointment in the K1 event earlier.

And then there was Peter Bol competing in the 800m final – Australia’s first finalist since 1968.

For me the Tokyo Olympics have shown that indeed sport is for all people, it is accessible to everyone and is it is inclusive. This year’s Olympians have perhaps been inspired by and demonstrated the Olympic Creed more than ever before...

“The most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well” It is this message, together with a healthy dose of house spirit and competitive rivalry alongside the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect that we took to our Inter House Athletics Carnival on Thursday ~ May the best house win!

We have seen athletes fight to the end and never give up, we have witnessed sportsmanship and kindness and we have equally seen pain and despair. We have seen Great Athletes and Great Sportsmanship shine through.

Some of the most memorable moments for me this far have been...

• Japan’s global superstar Naomi Osaka lighting the Olympic flame to open the Tokyo Games.

• Simone Biles from the USA cheering on her teammates after withdrawing from the Women’s Gymnastics Team Final only to return to win bronze on the beam.

• Momiji Nishiya from Japan and Rayssa Leal from Brazil being recognised as medallists in the women’s street skateboarding at only 13 years of age.

• Andrew Hoy becoming Australia’s oldest Olympic medallist at 62 years of age winning a silver and bronze in the equestrian competition.

• Mutaz Barshim from Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy agreeing to share gold in the Men’s High Jump.

• Rohan Browning running a personal best of 10.01 in the 100m heats.

Open Day 2021 Our Open Day is now just around the corner on Friday 20 August.

We are excited to welcome new and interested families to the school and invite our current School Community to let new families in their suburb know of our uniquely special school here in the heart of the City of Perth.

Tours will be led this year by our Year 11 students who will happily provide an honest and open insight into their life as proud members of the St George’s Anglican Grammar School Community. There will be a chance to see classes in action as well as to see a range of our co-curricular pursuits and specialist elective programs.

We are currently enrolling families for Year 7 entry in 2022, 2023 and 2024. There are now only a limited number of places available for Year 7 2022.

Due to demand, we will be opening an additional class for Year 10 2022 and so we welcome interest in this level of entry.

Chaplain’s Corner In the July holidays, ‘St George’s Art’ made a triumphant return to the Cathedral. The exhibition, which gathers work from young people in years 10, 11 and 12, across the State, took a rest last year due to Covid-19, but this year the voices of our young people rang out once more.

I was lucky to gain access to the artworks before the exhibition opened to the public, and as I wandered through the changed landscape of the Cathedral (adorned with artworks), I found myself marvelling at the wisdom, honesty and talent of the young people who have contributed their art for the exhibition. The students have commented on racism, Covid-19, the environment, gender and feminist issues as well as religion and mental health. Their artworks also spoke of love and acceptance, for family, each other and themselves.

In the canvases and creations, I heard voices anxious for acceptance, calling for change and challenging us to think about and re-think the way we form and support the people who will take our culture and community into the future. St George’s Art has shown me that our young people are thinking deeply about life, and are looking for answers as to how to best live in a world that is sometimes challenging and inhospitable.

and then their WACE Examinations in November. Our VET students have assignments and projects to finalise before their last weeks of school. This is all culminates in the evening Valedictory Ceremony which follows special events on Wednesday 20 October next term.

With the students returning after their holidays, our School is filled with activity: the sound of laughter, music, singing and footsteps up and down the stairs. From the Café, we can hear students on the roof playing dodgeball and basketball. This fills our days and creates the warm atmosphere that characterises St George’s. Even as we head into Week 3 of Term 3, much has happened and there is more to look forward to.

Keep safe and well this term and we look forward to seeing you at a School event soon.

In Week 1, we welcomed parents, guardians and carers to Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday and Thursday, followed by an Academics Awards Assembly on Friday. How wonderful it was to have so many parents at the Cathedral for this celebration of students’ achievements and effort.

In Week 2 on Thursday 4 August, we were blessed with fine weather for the annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival. One of the features of St George’s athletics carnivals is the whole school participation. The house spirit is palpable, and students support their peers with great gusto.

One of our bigger events in the next fortnight is the School Open Day on Friday 20 August. Our Year 12 students will have lessons scheduled, and there will be a range of classes and activities providing some insight into our School. This is a popular day for those who are interested and curious about St George’s to see what we are about.

At the start of this Term, St George’s appointed its second Educational assistant. It is an exciting time as the school looks to increase the contact time between our Educational assistants and students requiring support.

Creating a voice for students A Student Representative Council (SRC) is a group of students elected by their peers to represent all students within the school.

SRC’s work democratically to represent the student body in school decision-making and organises ways for students to participate in and enjoy school life.

Ms Jessica Kelly and Ms Hannah Brunton both have excellent skillsets when it comes to supporting students. They play a crucial role in learning support at St George’s Anglican Grammar School.

Our Student Representative Council is a student-based group designed to foster school spirit and leadership among students.

The members of the SRC change each year to maintain a fresh approach and a strong student voice within the school. Members are leaders who help to create and nurture constructive ideas within the school community. They are approachable students who are representatives of our student body.

Student Mentors This will be the fourth year running our exciting Student Mentorship Program. Nominations took place during term 2, where students could self-nominate as Mentors across Years 10 to 12.

Mentors will provide an approachable and non-threatening alternative for students who need support with any concerns or personal issues. They will have fortnightly group sessions run by the School Chaplain and Mr Hatton to debrief and provide ongoing guidance and support. Not only will our Mentors be a support for their peers, but they will also learn incredible life skills through being part of the program.

A free information session about efforts in the South West to keep revellers safe. Hosted by the Western Australia Police Force and the Department of Education, the sessions help parents to talk with their children about staying safe around alcohol and other drugs and while travelling as a driver or passenger.

Student, Parent and Teacher Meetings During Student, Parent and Teacher Meetings held last week, it was great to see so many of our students engage in conversations about their learning. Every new term is an opportunity to reset and refocus, on what we might want to improve in ourselves and our learning. For our students and staff, part of that is an opportunity to reflect on how we turn up every day at school with the intention of being the best version of ourselves. How we are diligent and hardworking, enthusiastic, how we can set new goals and succeed.

Audrey Hunt Congratulations to Audrey Hunt (Year 9) who completed her Intermediate level ballet examination in the Cecchetti Ballet Syllabus and was awarded Honours with a result of 91.5%. Audrey also recently competed in the State performance festival and won the West Australian Cecchetti Intermediate Scholarship.

Murdoch FlexiTrack High In partnership with Murdoch University, St George’s is proud to offer FlexiTrack High as an alternative to ATAR for Year 12 2022, catering for students seeking University Entrance who are currently struggling with the demands of ATAR. FlexiTrack High is fully endorsed by the School Curriculum and

Standards Authority (SCSA) and counts as Four Units towards the WACE. Successful completion of the course would see students awarded a notional ATAR of 70 and entry into Murdoch University.

Additionally, it will equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experience to succeed at university.

Mrs Sharon Gamble On 1 August, Sharon completed the Perth Half Marathon (21km) in the blustery, wild conditions, competing the race in an impressive 2:12 hours.

Sharon also completes a lazy 26km every weekend and is a marathon runner through and through. Great work, Sharon. Your endurance and commitment is incredible! and we love the care and compassion you provide on Student Reception.

The course is undertaken at school and is part of the School Timetable. The school will assign a teacher to oversee delivery of the course. Students must be able to demonstrate a ‘B’ or higher in general English or a ‘D’ or in ATAR English in Year 11 to be accepted into this program. Places in the course are limited.

This course is only available to very few select schools in Western Australia and places are limited. Interested students must submit the Expression of Interest Form by Friday, 06 August 2021.

Assessment Schedules Assessment Schedules for Term Three, 2021 have now been sent to all families via SEQTA. These schedules may help to support your child’s progress during this very busy term. While every effort will be made to proceed with these assessments on the scheduled date, situations occur which may involve the movement of an assessment task. In this instance, your child’s teacher will negotiate a suitable replacement date with the class and will notify you of this change via SEQTA.

Athletics Season

Science

Athletics season is upon us, and it has been brilliant to have the Olympics corresponding with our carnival as we are learning a lot by watching the experts who are inspiring us to perform “faster, higher, stronger” and now, “together” as we work collectively to win the overall 2021 Athletics House shield. I look forward to running the carnival this Thursday and reporting the results and announcing our 2021 G-Division ACC Team in the next newsletter.

The ACC Athletics Carnival takes place on Monday 6 September.

Science has an exciting term ahead, as we prepare for and celebrate National Science Week. The theme this year is Food: Different

by Design. Stay tuned for more information on the activities our amazing Science staff will be running and how you can get involved!

PE classes for Semester Two have started brilliantly and I commend all of you on your organisation and enthusiasm to participate.

Currently, we have Year 7’s playing European Handball at UWA and Lords. We have the two Year 8 classes combining to play Volleyball at Lords Recreation Centre. Year 10’s are enjoying the new challenge of Badminton at UWA and Year 9’s has begun their Netball Programme also being played

Our Year 12 Human Biology students have been learning about DNA as Evidence for Evolution and have been using the new electrophoresis kits to produce DNA profiles. This activity provides hands on learning they can draw upon in their examination later this term. We will be off to Perth Zoo to conduct our Primate studies in Week 5, this is a wonderful opportunity to learn from Perth Zoo educators and to come up close and personal with some of our closest relatives in the primate family.

Open Day will again see a terrible crime committed at St Georges!

Year 8’s are encouraged to sign up for a day filled with Forensics skills and to see if they have what it takes to solve the crime.

Moving on up in Swimming The Official ACC 2022 Swimming Divisions has just been released. The massive effort by every St George’s ACC Swim Team Representative, over the history of the school, has elevated St George’s from I-Division to E-Division. This moves us to the inside pools at HBF Stadium in 2022!

Our new home This week we received the exciting news that St George’s Anglican Grammar School will have a new and permanent home at 441 Murray Street. The building will also be the head offices of the Anglican Schools Commission, ASC International and the ASC Language School.

As many of you are aware our main school campus at 50 William Street is a leased building and is combined with classrooms as part of CQU at 10 William Street and administrative offices at 56 William Street. We effectively operate over three buildings on William Street with little room for expansion for new facilities. The purchase of 441 Murray Street allows us to establish much firmer foundations for our long-term future in the heart of the City of Perth.

working alongside a selected group of specialist educational architects to support us to ensure that the building meets its new purpose and can enhance our ongoing development and growth.

Perth is quickly becoming an education city, with Curtin University’s School of Law based on Murray Street, Murdoch University leasing property on St George’s Terrace, and Edith Cowan and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) moving into a site adjoining Yagan Square in 2025. All these developments along with our very own St George’s Anglican Grammar School students bring a wonderful youthful demographic to city life and injects further vitality, energy, vibrancy and growth into the heart of Perth.

St George’s Anglican Grammar School is firmly committed to maintaining the special sense of community within our school.

With our continued growth in recent years, we are beginning to quickly reach our capacity within our current buildings at 50 William Street and 10 William Street and now have wait lists in several year groups. The development of the new site at 441 Murray Street will allow us to continue to grow as well as being able to provide more readily for the increased needs of our Year 11 and 12 students.

Learning does not just happen within the walls of the school for St George’s Anglican Grammar School. The location of 441 Murray Street allows for our school to continue to use the city facilities already popular with our classes and specific programmes of study.

This was of paramount importance when searching for a longerterm permanent home.

Importantly, the additional space will provide the opportunity for us to diversify and broaden the curriculum that we are able to offer.

In the planning stages of the development, we are looking to create specialist subject areas such as Dance, Textiles, Food Technology, Woodwork and Metal Work to become part of the St George’s Anglican Grammar School curriculum as well as increasing our Science, Art, Drama, Music and Design spaces.

The move to 441 Murray Street will take some time. We will continue to operate our main campus out of 50 William Street for the foreseeable future with the formal move to 441 Murray some way off for many of our current students and families. It will begin to occur gradually for some classes until we fully operate from 441 Murray Street from 2030.

In this exciting interim period 441 Murray Street will be developed to provide for the increased needs of the school. We are currently

These are indeed exciting times for us as a school to work together to provide a world class education and facilities for all St George’s Anglican Grammar School students and staff. The next stage of the development will be to appoint an architect to help us in the first phase of the planning for the building. I look forward to keeping students, families and staff informed as we plan and design to bring our exciting new campus to fruition.
