With many of our students entering ‘exam’ and ‘study’ mode with NAPLAN testing, final assessment tasks, and exams looming ever closer for our senior students, it is important that whilst we continue to encourage hard work and the principles of doing ones best in such summative assessment tasks, we equally need to put such tests and assessment tasks in perspective. They are merely one part of the learning journey for students and success in them does not define you as a person. Each of us cope very differently in different situations and there is so much more to ones personality than how one performs in an exam or end of unit assessment or NAPLAN. So often it is easy for students to live inside their individual student bubble where the stresses of exams are too much to handle or the assignment deadline coming up way too fast is overwhelming and creates feelings of worry and being under pressure. It is vital that we work together to support our children to manage such pressures in their lives and to see exams and assessments merely as part of their normal schedule of learning. They help them to see what they have mastered as well as A school of the Anglican Schools Commission Inc.
what they have not understood quite yet. Whilst we all aspire for our students to achieve to their potential and encourage them to have a study plan, to work hard and to ace their exams, the reality is that all of our students are so much more than any grade or individual mark. Marks do not, by any means, represent or define who they are as a person and acing an exam does not make them immortal or guarantee anything more that a solid grade for that period of time in that subject. Examinations are not everything, they are a small part of school life as a student. Believe me, there is most definitely life beyond exams with many different pathways to achieve ultimate success in life and success for each person is different too.
As our students move closer end of semester examinations, major assessment tasks and tests I encourage them to maintain their perspective. With study on their minds I share with both them and you some of the tips and tricks that have worked for myself and my own children in studying effectively.

Chaplain’s Corner This week a big thank you must go to Ms Courtney Evans for her wonderful ANZAC Service. The Lieutenant Commander Sam Sheppard was a highlight of the memorial, with his words about service and readiness reminding us of the commitments we make to each other at school and in our communities. Commander Sheppard’s words particularly hit home for me during this time of sudden Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions. We are almost back to normal at school in this post-lockdown period. Some things will not change though, and these are common sense measures to protect our students. There are pump bottles of hand sanitiser in the entrance to the School, in all classrooms and open areas, as well as automatic hand dispensers at the lifts and in the cafeteria. There is disinfectant in each classroom so that the surfaces can be wiped down, and our day cleaner rotates through the School to disinfect surfaces and light switches. While masks are still compulsory on public transport, we encourage our students to wear reusable masks. Not only are we saving the planet, at the same time the students with their colourful masks are brightening the commuters’ day!
Students are expected to have their own masks; however, we do have some for those eventualities that inevitably occur. Monday 17 May at 1:30 pm is the Commissioning of Mrs Tina Campbell as Principal of St George’s Anglican Grammar School. This event will be held at St George’s Cathedral and for this momentous occasion, our Archbishop, the Right Reverend Kay Goldsworthy, will preside. The invitation to attend is extended to our School community. The School production team and crew have been preparing and rehearsing in time for the opening night next week on Thursday 20 May. There is such a buzz about the musical so make sure you have secured seats for the show.

Pastoral Focus Hilton Hardman
St George’s Day 2021
On 3 May, the School celebrated St George’s Day. Students gathered in their pastoral groups during period one to take part in several service activities around the school with the focus of supporting our wider community. These activities included writing cards for children at Perth Children’s Hospital, writing a prayer for the prayer wall, decorating worry stones, making worry dolls, writing letters to Amana Living residents, and creating stationery packs and hygiene packs for the Salvation Army.
Following these activites was our St George’s Day Eucharist and the announcement of the 2021 Spirit of St George Awards. Congratulations to Daniel Greenaway for receiving the Senior Spirit of St George Award, and Audrey Hunt for receiving the Junior St George Award. Daniel and Audrey both consistently uphold and exemplify the School’s ethos and values, actively seeking to live with wisdom, grace and service, and reflect the character of St George to stand up for that which is good and right. Congratulations also to James Cohen on his appointment as Chapel Captain. Unfortunately, we could not finish the day with the planned Lincoln Charity activities due to COVID-19 restrictions, however this event will be postponed to the end of this term.
Student Guest Speaker
During Term 1, Paul Litherland was our parent guest speaker on the topic of Online safety. This presentation proved to be extraordinarily informative, leading to many parents asking if Paul would be presenting to the students. I am happy to confirm that Paul will be running three sessions to targeted year groups. Two sessions will be on Cybersafety and the online/gaming world and one session on Consent. Guest speakers play a significant role in our pastoral program, and we look forward to providing more presentations to our student body on key topics.

Academic Awards Update There are several different types of awards presented to students at St George’s Anglican Grammar School. These awards recognise and congratulate students in Years 7 to 12 for their academic achievement and attitude and effort to their studies and to encourage others to strive for excellence. The awards recognise the academic achievement of our students in Years 7 – 12 following completion of their Semester One or Semester Two assessment period. These awards are presented at the Principal’s Assembly at the start of Term Two and at Presentation Evening or Valedictory in Term Four when all assessment is finalised. A communication outlining the criteria for Academic Awards has been sent to all students and families this week via SEQTA. In addition to the existing Attitude & Effort Certificate, Academic Excellence and Subject Excellence, we are excited to add two further awards to our academic awards as recognition for our student’s academic excellence. The Lydda Award The Lydda Award is named after Saint George, who was also known as George of Lydda. This award is awarded at the end of the examination period in Year 11 and Year 12 to a student who achieves 70% or greater in at least four of their ATAR subjects. It is awarded to a Year 11 and Year 12 General Pathway student who achieves a minimum of four
Grade A and nothing less than a Grade B within the semester or has been recognised at state level for their contributions to their respective course and to a Year 12 WAUFP student who has achieved 60% or greater four WAUFP subjects. The Lydda Award can be awarded at the end of Semester One or Two in Year 11 and at the end of Semester One or the Mock Examinations in Year 12. Alpha Society An ATAR student who achieves Academic Excellence in both Year 11 and Year 12 will become a member of the St George Alpha Society. The Alpha Society was established to acknowledge exceptional scholastic achievement to those students in Year 11 and Year 12 who strive for excellence through their attitude and application in their studies.
Year 12 Examinations
Our Year 12 ATAR students have now been sent an email communication with their examination timetable for Semester One exams. The exams begin on Thursday 27 May and conclude Thursday 3 June. Students are encouraged to print off this schedule and plan for each examination accordingly. A timeline for the return of Year 12 Semester One examinations has been developed in consultation with the Head of Curriculum and the Heads of Learning Areas. All examinations, marks and feedback will be returned to our Year 12 students from Monday 14 June.
On Tuesday 11 May, our Mock Trial team St George Legal, competed in the second round of the Western Australia Mock Trial Competition. There are seven rounds in total in the competition, with the first three rounds held in Semester One. At the end of these rounds, the 16 top scoring teams progress to the elimination rounds in Semester Two. Having convincingly won their first round of the competition, this small group of only six students were unflappable, acting on behalf of the claimant, Ms Danika Tailor in a civil matter against the defendant Mr Dmitri Rizeski for the sum of $3000. The judge ruled in favour of the claimant, following a substantial argument from her barristers, Marianna Beeken and Saira Afridi, who were supported by solicitor Jacob Spargo. The judge also congratulated the ‘unsung heroes’ of the trial, witnesses Roisin Beesley and Shanaye Cooper on their convincing performances and noted the professionalism of the court orderly, Raquel Quyn. Congratulations St George Legal and good luck for Round Three!

Ms Jodie Scheele One class task, for Years 7 to 9, was to design a cathedral based on specific elements that can be found in any Anglican place of worship. Oli Davy, of Year 7, chose to use Minecraft as her tool, and designed an exceptional cathedral that included crosses and the Word of God. It was exciting to see the students being creative and using a variety of tools to express their understanding of Anglican Identity. Mr Ryan McBride INTER-HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL The 2021 Inter-House Cross Country Carnival took place on Tuesday 4 May at Hale Oval, Kings Park. Students enjoyed the picturesque and scenic course while completing two laps of a 1.5km circuit through the Botanical Gardens bushlands. Credit to the many Senior students who attended the event in true St George’s spiri. Congratulations to everyone involved and to Gandhi House, who were crowned the 2021 carnival champions.
SCHOOL OF ROCK - 6 DAYS TO OPENING NIGHT! As we reach the pointy end of the rehearsals for this year’s school production, School of Rock, I can’t help but wait in anticipation for opening night. The cast and crew have been working incredibly hard to produce such a fantastic show for the St. George’s community. As Drama Captain, I am so grateful to be working with such talented, hardworking people. Despite disruptions due to COVID-19, we’ve taken these setbacks in our stride and the show looks better and better after each rehearsal. I’m looking forward to the craziness of production week (next week!) and the joys of performing at the State Theatre Centre this year. 2021 ACC Cross Country The ACC Cross Country Carnival will be held on Thursday 27 May at Alderbury Reserve. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to represent the School in the 2021 St George’s ACC Team. Training takes place every Monday and Wednesday and is open to anyone that would like to improve their endurance.
You might even catch sight of some dolphins! The ACC Team is encouraged to come along as you will need to train fo the 3km (U/13 and U/14) or 4km distance (all other divisions). We meet in the Fitness Centre at 7am for a prompt departure at 7:05am and will be back in the building at 8am in time for you to shower and be ready for class.

ST GEORGE’S SUPERSTARS Kate van Olden and Daniel Greenaway Congratulations to Daniel Greenaway who was awarded his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and Kate Van Olden who received her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an international youth development award. Students develop a skill, undertake service work, engage in a physical activity and go on an adventurous journey. Along the way they discover many hidden talents. Daniel chose to explore a region of Japan for his expedition while Kate went camping, hiking and canoeing. Kate selected music for her skill section, while Daniel chose cooking. Much of their service work was done through the School and Anglicare. For the physical activity section Daniel chose hockey while Kate worked towards a fitness goal. The Award is flexible so that students can tailor it to their interests. Any student wanting to do the award can direct message Mrs Kania for further information.
