St George’s Anglican Grammar School; an exciting, innovative co-educational secondary school based in a high-rise building in the Perth CBD. The School caters for local and international students in Years 7-12, and is a proud member of the Anglican Schools Commission network of schools in Western Australia. I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all members of our school community. I hope you enjoyed your time together over the recent school holidays and have had the opportunity to reconnect with each other as a family. Term 4 is another busy term, complete with an array of school community activities that I hope you and your family are able to enjoy and contribute towards. I encourage all students to hit the ground running and make the very most of this term. It is not too late to improve performance and marks for the Semester Two reports, so get to it!

Aelwen Jones was interviewed for her work with Millenium Kids, for winning the Environmental Action Award from the United Nations Association of Western Australia. This award recognizes the significant contribution towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the Millenium Kids youth board (of which Aelwen is a member) have made over the last 2 years. Last week a virtual event was held to announce the winners and Aelwen’s interview was broadcast along with some film of the work Millennium Kids do.

Enrolment Updates Thank you to our current families for your faith in our school. As you are aware, notice of one term is required for student withdrawals to avoid a terms fee in lieu, and I am pleased to say that we have had only one or two notifications to date. Therefore, it is anticipated we see nearly all students returning in 2021, which is extremely exciting. Our enrolments continue to go from strength to strength, but we still have some limited space in Year 7 and 10, 2021 due to moving to 3 streams in those year groups. I encourage families who have family, friends or work colleagues whose child would like to join our community to enrol as soon as possible. Your advocation is key to our success.
Staff Celebration I would like to congratulate our School Chaplain, The Reverend Sarah Stapleton, on receiving the news that she will be appointed to the office of Priest in the Anglican Diocese of Perth. Reverend Sarah will be ordained as a Priest in November of this year, which we are absolutely thrilled about. The Year 12 Class of 2020 Live a life without limits because everything is possible to those who believe.
This week has been very special as we farewell an extraordinary group of young men and women. Throughout 2020, we have reflected on what an unusual year this has been, and on the challenges faced by our Year 12 cohort. Their resilience and positive approach has not gone unnoticed and, although they may not think it now, perhaps the year that has been will have them believe more in their own abilities and know that they can adapt and face the toughest challenges. When I think of our Year 12 cohort and how this year has shaped them, I am reminded of a valedictory speech I once heard delivered by a Year 12 student to her graduating class. She encouraged them to consider modelling their lives, not in the manner of a famous historic figure or an influential celebrity – but in something more ordinary, Carassius Auratus Auratus, commonly known as the domestic goldfish.

People make fun of the goldfish, insultingly suggesting that they are creatures of very little brain power and never get bored because every three seconds they forget everything. However, nothing could be further from the truth! More importantly, if you live like a goldfish, you can survive the toughest, most thwarting of circumstances. Goldfish can live in ice-covered ponds, bowls that haven’t been cleaned in a year, they can survive inside or outside, in ponds or in tanks, social or alone, and they don’t die from neglect (well, not immediately!). If you live like a goldfish, you learn to adapt. Give a goldfish a little tank! They give you a little body. Give them a big tank? They give you a big body. If you live like a goldfish, you will only ever be limited by the size of your own pond! Like goldfish, this Year 12 cohort refused to be limited by the size of their pond. They refused to let the challenges of 2020 limit them and they have earned the right to be remembered, not for what they lost, but for how they survived the most thwarting of circumstances. As they embark on exciting new adventures outside of St. George’s, I am confident they will continue live a life without limits.

Year 11 2020 Year 11 students should note the following significant dates: Monday 26 October – Year 11 Examination Timetables Released Wednesday 11 November - Year 11 Study Day Thursday 12 November - Year 11 Examinations Commence Friday 20 November - Year 11 Examinations Conclude Monday 23 November - Year 11 Students Recommence Classes *It is an expectation that all students return to school Monday 23 November. Year 10 2020 Earlier this year, and due to interruptions in face to face teaching, a decision was made to remove Year 10 Examinations from the academic calendar. For that reason,Year 10’s will be provided with a variety of assessment types this term, including in-class tests (in place of examinations). These in-class tests will contribute to their overall Year 10 results and will also provide them with an examination experience.
Assessment Schedules Assessment Schedules for all Term 4 Year 7 – Year 11 assessments, have been sent to all families through SEQTA. As a guide, these schedules will help to support your child’s progress during this term. While every effort has been made to ensure that all assessments are scheduled on the given date, situations may occur which could involve the movement of a task or due date. In this instance, your child’s teacher will negotiate a suitable change of date.

2021 Student Guild At our Chapel service on Monday 19 October, we inducted the 2021 Student Guild. Part of that ceremony is always to thank and acknowledge the outgoing Guild. I have had the pleasure of working with the 2020 Guild this year; they are a fantastic group of students who have put the needs of other students before their own. On Monday’s Chapel service I had the following to say about this outgoing group: It has become clear to me that this year’s Student Guild has an unconditional love for our school and what it stands for. In a world full of people looking out for what might be best for them, it was refreshing to work with a group who were so selfless to their cause. They used their leadership to foster positive change and inclusivity daily. In line with this a quote from one of Marvels favourite movies, “With great power, comes great responsibility”. They have shown passion, commitment, resilience and flexibility during this year, with a healthy dose of humour during our meetings. I could list the number of goals achieved, events run or the fact that they have raised more money for charity than any Guild before them, but what has stood out to me is this groups relationship with their fellow students.
I want to express my gratitude to the Guild for their leadership during this period. One of the key messages passed on during this service was for the incoming leadership group to understand that they are a caretaker of their elected position. They should strive to leave it in a better state than when they received it as they are not only a representative of their school and house, but also a representative of each person who has held that position before them. Like those before they have left their legacy, it is time for them to start theirs. I have no doubt the 2021 Guild will serve our school community with the same level of energy and enthusiasm. Congratulations to those students. I am very sad to say goodbye to the Year 12s… not because I have had the joy of getting to know them and love them this year but rather the opposite.
Speaking of the Guild, it was great to see the new Guild receive their badges on Monday at Chapel. I am sure they will be a great group next year, and I am most excited to have a Chapel Captain (thank you Tate!).
As we look to the future, a new Guild and a new year, it is important to acknowledge the Unfortunately I have passing of the current Guild, and give thanks for been unable to get into another year fast disappearing. From the Head of The Arts Ms Carol Wohlnick
Art and Design 2020 - we made it! The Art Exhibition is installed and looking great and although tenuous at one stage earlier in the year, it is now a tremendous collection. This year’s show represents an entire year of hard work by all students and staff in the Creative Arts Department. The Exhibition includes works from Years 7 to 12 students with pieces demonstrating a broad range of media, in graduating complexity. There are vibrant multi-sensory still life paintings from the Year 7’s, to the crosscurricular links to Marine Science in the Year 8’s ceramic Coral Reef Project. The Year 9’s have completed a new project with a wedding display of quirky Bridesdogs in the main window. The Year 10’s skateboards are exquisite and the Design Photography work outstanding this year.

From the Head of Physical Education Ms Jodie Scheele
We certainly have some talented sporting individuals within our school. I am very pleased to inform you that Year 12 student, Eliza Griffin was not only awarded the ACC H-Division Champion Girl at this year’s ACC HDivision Athletics Carnival but she also made it into the 2020 ACC All Stars Athletics Team for the Open Girls 400m Race. The All Stars team consists of the top performer for each event from all the ACC Athletics Carnivals from A to J Division. This really is an incredible achievement. Eliza ran the 400m in 59:47 seconds, not too far off the ACC record of 56:53secs. Over her high school career, she has excelled in Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country and has done so in such a humble manner. Eliza’s contribution to Physical Education has been outstanding and we thank her for all her efforts at the ACC Carnivals and for playing a major role in putting St George’s on the ACC map. We wish you all the very best in your future endeavours, Eliza.
Ali Griffin is also to be congratulated as she entered the ACC Virtual Cross Country by sending her results taken from Athletics West, Little Athletics events where the results of these events were processed by “Bluchip” Timing into a virtual ACC Cross Country event. Ali placed third in the U/16 Girls. We look forward to Ali continuing to run for St George’s and wish her all the best with her heavy training schedule.
Another talented student is Year 9 Bonnie Baugh who competed in the 2020 “Groundswell Festival” which took place on the 4 October. Bonnie drops into the Scarborough Snake Pit bowl and her skating skills earnt her a win in the State round, where she won cash and a new board for herself. With the Tokyo Olympics offering skateboarding this year, there are exciting opportunities out there for our skating community and Bonnie has the potential and the attitude to go far in the sport.
Congratulations, Bonnie, on your achievements and we wish you all the best in your skating career. PE Classes are going well! Currently, the Year 7’s are batting their way through their Cricket Program at Supreme Court Gardens, the Year 8’s are smashing their way through their Tennis Program at Kings Park Tennis Club.Year 9 and 10 are hitting home runs in their Softball games and we will be having some inter-class competitions later this term. With the weather heating up, please ensure all students have the school hat ready, and a water bottle, for their PE classes. We are having inconsistencies with the PE Uniform in relation to socks. All students are required to wear the school sports socks. Thank you.

School News Student Term Dates - 2020 Term 4 13 October - 9 December
Student Term Dates - 2021 Term 1 29 January - 01 April New Student Orientation, 28 January Students Mid Term Break, Friday 26 February Term 2 21 April - 02 July Students Mid Term Break, Friday 4 June Enrolments The School Enrolment Policy requires one full term’s notice in writing prior to the withdrawal of a student from the School. Where such notice is not received, the School will charge an amount equal to the tuition fees for that current term. To avoid fees in lieu being charged, notice of a student’s withdrawal must be received by the School before the first day of the School Term preceding the Term of the student’s departure. If this does not occur, families will be charged the remainder of the current Term, plus an additional Terms fee in lieu. Upon withdrawal of a student from the School, all fees and charges incurred for that student are payable to the School in full within seven days of exit.
Computer Rental Agreement Computers are not always reliable and will sometimes fail and require repairs. This causes the student to, sometimes, go without a computer for a couple of weeks. The School can now offer free loan computers when required. Parents/guardians, please fill out and sign the agreement form here and allow the IT department 24 hours to prepare a computer for use. Uniform Shop Please be advised that Matrix Uniforms are in the process of moving over to a new web platform which is taking longer than anticipated. Some of the items show that the stocks are out. Rest assured they are fully stocked up and have all the uniforms. Battery Recycling Used batteries are being collected in the IT Manager’s office. Please take advantage of this free facility. What batteries can be collected? Dry cell batteries include AA, AAA (single use or rechargeable), C, D, button batteries, 9V, 6V and cordless power tools. What batteries cannot be collected? Lead acid batteries, such as car batteries, and mobile phone batteries cannot be collected. Please contact your local council for details of how to dispose of these batteries.
