St George’s Anglican Grammar School; an exciting, innovative co-educational secondary school based in a high-rise building in the Perth CBD. An Anglican School In one of our recent whole staff meetings we discussed as a group our Anglican identity, and further reflected on what it means to be an Anglican School. As some of you may recall, I wrote an article a few months ago around this very topic, but we feel as a staff that it is important to continue the conversation as it truly underpins every fibre of our being - it is the reason that St George’s is such a wonderful, pleasant, productive and successful place for our students to be educated.

Posters around our school remind students what it means to be an Anglican School; it is about Believing, Thinking, Worshipping Together, Welcoming All and Loving/Helping others. When I look around our school and all that we do I am pleased to see we are living these things day in and day out, and I am sure you have all experienced the impact of these at some point throughout your journey with us – we are truly blessed!

I write to remind families that St George’s is well placed to deal with any outbreak or closure and has a clear plan of action. This has been shared with families previously; however, it is essential that we do not consider our State invulnerable and seek to ensure we are implementing healthy habits and not taking our current situation for granted. Therefore, this note is another reminder to please continue your vigilance in terms of reminding your children to wash their hands, attempting to physically distance wherever possible, not sharing food or water bottles, and not attending school if unwell.

So, please be alert, not alarmed.Your ongoing actions are critical in keeping us all protected and healthy, so thank you!

Open Day As indicated in the last newsletter, our Open Day was held on Friday August 21. I am pleased to say we had over 150 people come through our doors, which highlights the strong reputation we have as a force in education across Perth. The groups were excited about our learning spaces, location, sport and music programs, academic rigour, and vision for the future. Thank you to the Be Alert, Not Alarmed! students who willingly gave up their time to ‘Be alert, not alarmed’ was the central theme of attend and support the staff in running the ex-Prime Minister, John Howard’s, countersessions. terrorism awareness campaign that still resonates today as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in Western Australia.

I recently attended an Association of Independent Heads of Australia WA Branch conference, which had a significant focus on Blessings COVID-19, including being prepared in case of a spike in our community, lessons learned and Gary Racey Principal silver linings. One of the main talking points was the concern of becoming complacent, both within our schools and without.

Do Schools Kill Creativity?

The pioneering educationist Sir Ken Robinson has influenced my teaching for years. I find his work and his philosophy of teaching and learning inspirational.

Robinson had an innate gift to take complex educational theories and concepts and break them down, with clarity and humour, making them accessible to all.

Fourteen years ago, Robinson delivered a marvellous TedTalk where he challenged the way we educate our children and proposed a radical rethink of our school systems, to cultivate creativity and acknowledge multiple types of intelligence. After all, we are educating our children for a future that we cannot predict or comprehend. Our current Year 7s will retire at 65 in 2073! We don’t know what the world will look like in five years, so how can we confidently say we are preparing our students for their future?

Robinson, like many of us, believed that all children have tremendous talent and education has the capacity to squander these talents. He contended that creativity is as important in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status. To reinforce this idea, he shared the story of a little girl, in the back of her class, drawing. The teacher had noted the girl hardly ever paid attention in school, but in this Art lesson she did. The teacher was fascinated. She went over to the girl and said, “What are you drawing?” and the girl replied, “I’m drawing a picture of

God”. The teacher remarked, “nobody knows what God looks like” but the girl replied, “they will in a minute”. The point Robinson was making is that children are creative, they will take a chance because they are risk takers, and they don’t care about being wrong.

There is a strong connection between being a risk taker and being creative. If you are not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with anything original. As children get older and become adolescents, most have lost that capacity. They become frightened of being wrong, of being a risk taker. Robinson argued that we are running our education systems like this, where mistakes are the worst thing you can make and that in doing so, we are educating people out of their creative capacities. Sadly, creative capacities are exactly what our students need to prepare them for their future.

A 2015 report by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) estimated that up to five million Australian jobs faced the possibility of being replaced

by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation.

They warned that jobs with low social interaction and creativity would probably be replaced with AI. Another report, conducted

by Burning Glass Technologies in 2019, surveyed almost six million US job vacancies and found the essential requirements for potential employers were Communication, Inquiry, Collaboration and Creative and Critical Thinking. These are what we call 21st century transferable skills. Transferable skills are human skills that computers cannot do and will be the future of work. As educators we need to define these transferable skills, embed them in our teaching and learning and measure our students’ development from them.

To cultivate creativity, we must also allow choice.

Providing students with choice boosts their engagement and motivation and allows them to capitalise on their strengths and cultivate their creative capacities. Allowing choice in education positively influences students’ motivation and learning as it promotes feelings of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Students are more engaged in their learning when they believe they know what to do to be successful and feel capable of taking risks and mastering challenges.

Students have the capacity to embrace creativity.

Choice results in beneficial outcomes for our students.

Robinson believed that schools should have the discretion to develop creativity and noted, “Don’t treat children as the same or overprogram them, they find their talents by trying things out.” Given the direction and pace of technology, our students can access any information and at any time. Knowing stuff is now a mere function of the equipment they are using. As educators, with a 21st century approach, we know that the future is not how much our students know, nor the speed of their recall, but what they want to know – the quality of their questions and their capacity for creativity.

Nobel Pathway “The important thing is to never stop questioning” Albert Einstein In 2021, St Georges is very excited to introduce a new elective, Nobel Pathway. Nobel Pathway is a STEM enrichment elective for students who have a passion for Science and Innovation and who are looking to expand their creativity in this area. Nobel Pathway will provide a broad selection of courses that sit beyond the Science Curriculum, offering students the opportunity to extend their Science knowledge and skills. It is founded on the following four pillars: Investigation, Resourcefulness, Collaboration and Creativity. In 2021, this elective will be offered to all Year 7, 9 and 10 students and from 2022, it will be offered to all students in Years 7-10.

Students in Year 7 and Year 8 will continue to rotate through electives, providing them with the opportunity experience all subjects. In Year 9 and Year 10 however, students are provided with choice and the opportunity to achieve mastery in the subjects they are passionate about. For that reason, several electives offer a Full Year option.

From the Head of Pastoral Mr Hilton Hardman

Anglicare WA School Sleepout 2020 This year due to the Covid19 health restrictions the annual Anglicare WA School Sleepout was unable to run at Optus Stadium.

This gave us the unique opportunity to complete the sleep out at school instead! The Year 10 cohort responded to the invitation to sleep out on the roof at school with gusto. Once the students had registered their interest in the sleep out, they got to work securing sponsorships from their family and friends. Our team of participants this year did a fantastic job of fundraising with a grand total of $6600 raised!

This is a phenomenal effort, especially considering the tough times that some of our own community have been facing in light of the pandemic. It is so heartening to see that even when facing tough times of our own, we as a community still do amazing things to help others in need. The funds raised from this event enable Anglicare WA to offer the Street Connect program which provides youth workers on the street to help young people facing homelessness navigate the problematic systems in order to get themselves in a better situation. Our students were fantastic on the night; it was lovely to see them socialising with one another and sharing the experience of the cold and uncomfortable sleeping positions. Their reflections on the morning after sleeping out show a significant level of maturity and empathy for those who have to sleep rough every night.

Feedback from students who took part: Alexandra Griffin – Year 10 The Anglicare Sleepout took place on 7 August.

We arrived at school at 6:00 pm to an online presentation introducing us to the events of the night. Then the activities began. The first was a simulation of the life of a homeless person. We received a profile of a young person sleeping on the streets, and we became them for the night.

We had to face problems such as getting a Centrelink payment, finding a safe place to sleep and getting medical support. We then received dinner at 9:00 pm and although we were tired, the night was just beginning. We were taken up to the roof and where we felt the 5-degree weather. Sleeping was the next challenge. We each picked our pieces of cardboard and tried our best to get comfortable and warm. Well into the night, one by one, we were woken up and told to move around the roof, clear the area and find a new place to go. This was especially challenging as getting comfortable was hard enough, and we had to do it all over again. At 6:00 am, we were woken up and got our breakfast, ready for a closing presentation.

Thank you to the staff who supported this event and the students for their brilliant attitude towards this experience.

Overall it was an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Being put into the shoes of a homeless person in a way that was so realistic allowed each of us to understand what it is like to be a young person on the streets.

Amelia Johnson – Year 10 On Friday 7 August peers and I were given the opportunity of sleeping out on the roof to raise money for Street Connect and also to have a glimpse into what it would be like on the streets in this time of year. We had to undergo activities and were given an identity; we had to find out how to access our birth certificate, how to claim Centrelink, and how to find crisis accommodation. It became clear just how difficult these tasks are just for us students, so it must be even more of a struggle for those on the streets without access to all the resources we take for granted. We were kept up all night with workers next door working on construction and had to move locations every few hours in order to stimulate somewhat the reality of what the homeless people in WA experience. From this experience, I have gained some insight into what it’s like being in the miserable cold, and even with a sleeping blanket I still woke up shivering and with back pain, which is what around 3,000 young people on the streets in WA undergo daily. I thank St. George’s staff and Street Connect for organising this event as it has opened myself and my peer’s eyes and I am looking forward to participating again next year if given the opportunity.

National Science Week was a hit! Students across the school interacted with the challenges, demonstrations and activities held throughout the week.

Thankyou to the wonderful Science staff who ran sessions and shared their expertise in Science.

Once the students left, a few of the staff come down to test their own investigative skills, or more likely to double check they hadn’t been framed as the criminal! Thankyou to our lab technician, Helen Chatfield, who set up the activities and crime scene. Also to Mr Hardman for being such a good sport and the Science team for supervising and helping our students develop their investigatory skills.

The Photo Competition results are in!

Congratulations to Cooper Zuideveld who won the ‘Peoples Choice Award’ with his photo of herbs. Ms Wohlnick also cast her artistic eye over the photos and has chosen Tate Orsini’s photo for the ‘Design Choice Award’. The photo wall looks fantastic on Level, 4, so make sure you go and have a look before the end of next week.

We also had a few excursions last week, reinforcing that Science is rarely limited to the To finish off the week, and coinciding with Open confines of a laboratory or classroom.

Day, the Science Department ran its first Forensics Day. 15 students from Year 8 spent the day gaining skills in detecting forgery, chromatography, microscopy, fingerprint analysis, mysterious powder classification and DNA extraction. After a Maths session run by Miss Hewitt, the students were informed of the ‘Catastrophic Calamity’ that had occurred in Lab 2 while they were gone!

Donning their lab coats and clipboards the students observed the crime scene, collected and analysed the evidence, and using their best communication skills, determined that Mr Quan was the one ‘who-done-it’. Ms Evans, acting as 7

Our Year 11 Physics students went to the Perth Observatory, some year 10 students were lucky to experience the annual Science Café at UWA, and the Year 12 Human Biology students completed their primate study with a day at Perth Zoo. The Science Café is an opportunity for year 10 students to speak with STEM professionals, PhD students and current Science students from UWA. We were pleasantly surprised to hear from pastscholar Massimo McKie (Class of 2018) who delivered the keynote speech on behalf of UWA students. Massimo is currently studying Physics and Science Communication, and definitely inspired our students to continue their pursuit of Science and Mathematics study.

Student reflections on the day: Ali Griffin: “The Science Cafe was an event held to help kids interested in STEM subjects find career paths. It helped students realise the path after high school and how they can find a career that suits them. As a student interested in STEM, I really enjoyed the experience. I got to meet lots of kids from other schools and talk with some STEM professionals about their careers.”

Kailyn Kroutz: “I found the whole day very interesting and I learned a lot about different STEM careers that I didn’t previously know existed. It has made me very interested and excited in pursuing a career in science.”

Alex Samara: “Thank you so much for the science cafe last week. I enjoyed it very much because it help me to plan what subject I want to take for next year. I also enjoy to learn and experience a lot of new science information and be able to meet some professional scientists who share a lot of interesting things.”

From the Head of Mathematics and Science Gin Gin Discovery Centre: Written by Ms Valentine At the start of the day on Thursday 27 August, the St George’s and Mercedes College Year 11 physics classes joined forces along with their teachers, Ms Valentine and Ms Bresser and travelled up to Gingin to the world renowned Gravity Discovery Centre.

We were ably guided through the day by Stuart and Jonathon, astronomers at the Observatory.

We went for a walk through a scaled model of the solar system comprising the eight planets and some of their most significant moons. Stuart revealed many interesting facts about these celestial objects. After we reached Saturn, a select handful of really keen and fit students ran the one kilometre to and from Uranus, the next closest planet. When these adventurous astrotravellers returned, we took a relaxed walk back to the Leaning Tower of Gingin.

Galileo Galilei conducted many experiments to test his theories on gravity in the early 17th Century, some of which involved him dropping objects from the top of a tower. The angle of lean that the tower Galileo climbed is 5o but that of our local tower is 15o.

With nerves of steel, much like the material from which the tower is constructed, the year 11 Physics students, their two teachers and Stuart the Astronomer, ascended the 222 steps

to reach the top of the tower. Once there, the students replicated Galileo’s gravity experiment by dropping water filled balloons. The time of each drop was recorded, outliers removed and the average time of 3.00 s was arrived at. With this data, we were able to calculate and confirm that, indeed, the height of the Leaning Tower of Gingin stands at 45 m, the same as the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

We then walked through the impressive model that seeks to encapsulate the history of the entire known Universe, starting with the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago all the way through to the present day. As you can imagine, there

was a lot of information to take in. After lunch, we used a telescope to view the light from the sun through a filter. The image through the lens was red as it had filtered out the colours with a shorter wavelength, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. We also looked at the spacetime simulator, observed the characteristic wave motion of sound and light and measured the speed of sound.

After this enthralling day of Physics fun, we headed back to the city. The day’s activities provided a deeper insight to the many aspects of this fascinating field of study.

On Friday 28 August, the Science department hosted the inaugural viewing of a feature film.

Dark Waters was released in the cinemas earlier in the year. The story is based on the article entitled, “The lawyer who became DuPont’s worst nightmare”, written by Nathaniel Rich and published in the New York Times Magazine in 2016.

It follows the story of an environmental lawyer, Rob Bilott, played by Mark Ruffalo, who stumbled across the waste product of the manufacture of polytetrafluoroethene (TeflonTM) by DuPont, who had a chemical plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia. The high concentrations of perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA) in the water supply systems of the surrounding regions led to environmental, biological and health impacts that were intentionally kept secret by the company.

Rob Bilott started working on the case over twenty years prior to the publication date of the article. By 2016, there were over 3 500 plaintiffs claiming for damages against the chemical giant. The content of the film was an east coast version of the film made famous by Julia Roberts, Erin Brokovich, which was based on the west coast of the United States.

Both year 11 and 12 Chemistry students were invited to attend the event as the subject matter was related to content studied in class.

The movie exposed not just the ethical and moral issues of how DuPont knew about the water contamination but also the legal aspects of the company being brought to justice for their wrongdoing.

The line structure of the waste products are shown below. If you have any keen Chemistry students, they may be able to explain the physical and chemical properties to you. Or you can seek out Ms Valentine, who will be happy to discuss the significance of these substances being in the water supply.

News from Miss Hewitt The year 8 classes joined forces this week to participate in competition style, problem solving tasks. Students worked in teams to solve real world problems and utilise all the mathematics they have learnt this year. The rounds got progressively harder providing a fun challenge to all.

During open day student took a break from the exceptional forensic activities to participate in a range of geometry-based problems. Students used their knowledge of transformations to complete puzzles including The Loculus of Archimedes. Students also explored pentominoes and completed a range of challenges.

In The Music Department In week 4, St George’s had its open day where Electrocity Ensemble recorded their Australian Society of Music Education commission ‘Find My Voice’ as new families walked through.

The rough mix at the end of the day sounded fantastic and we’re looking forward to the completed song and teaching resources being made available to other schools to use in their classes.

In other news, the St George’s music department is having its first concert for 2020!

The September Song will be held in the iconic Art Deco old Perth Girl’s School (formerly Police Headquarters in East Perth and now the Fringe Festival HQ) on 17 September.

The Cathedral Choir is the lead group of its type in Australia and is led by Dr Joseph Nolan. Dr Nolan joined St George’s Cathedral from Her Majesty’s Chapels Royal in 2008. 3. What’s the best thing about Music at St G’s?

The best thing about music at SGAGS is the community around all the bands with different instruments, There isn’t just all guitars and pianos you have violins trumpets clarinets and flutes and it’s fun to have over options to play other then guitar and piano so it’s fun to get a diverse option.

4. Why should other people do music?

Other people should do music as it helps stimulate the senses and it’s a great hobby to take in as you are learning and having fun at the same time 5. What’s your advice for anyone learning Music?

My advice for anyone who’s starting music would to be practice. I know it sounds cliché but it’s really important. I used to not practice, I regret it now so practice when you just start and you will pick up and learn things quicker!

On 28 August, myself and other students were accompanied by both Chaplain Sarah and Mr McBride to the Wear it Purple day (WiP day) excursion at Woodside. WiP day is an annual LGBTQIA+ awareness day especially for young people, based in Australia. So naturally, everyone had an aspect of purple on their uniforms, some even wore bright tutus, socks and shoes, getting into the WiP spirit!

St. Georges was invited as supporters and allies to sit in a ‘seminar’ type meeting at Woodside who was sponsoring the event. The event was run by Perth Innercity Youth centre, or PICYS for short. PICYS is a youth organisation whose mission is to be “committed to working with young people in a non-judgmental and holistic way that fosters a belief in empowerment, integrity and collaboration, and which provides a safe and secure environment.” There we sat in the audience and listened to various members of PICYS talk about their experiences as homeless or displaced LGBTQIA+ youth in WA, and answered questions asked by the attendees.

Their answer was, educating staff and students in order for the school cohort to treat LGBTQIA+ students and staff with respect, creating a safer environment. Afterwards, Woodside provided us with lunch, including beautifully decorated cupcakes!

There we all had an opportunity to talk to all attendees in a more casual environment.

We were also gifted stickers as a parting gift.

From the Head of Physical Education Ms Jodie Scheele

We were truly blessed to have the opportunity to take part in the NWAS one-day carnivals.

These were in aid of the Winter Sport fixtures that did not take place in Term Two. Students were bused to four different venues to compete in Netball, Soccer and Badminton fixtures for the day. I would like to thank Melissa Kinsmen, Hilton Hardman,Vincent Lim, Gaile Racey, Elisa Dumitru Natalie McCann, Daniel Caplan and Yousri Gharsallah for coaching and supervising the teams at the event.

They all reported just how wonderful our students were in being outstanding ambassadors for the school in the way in which they conducted themselves. I am always so impressed by the camaraderie, tenacity, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm displayed by our students. Thank you to all the student competitors, parent helpers and student umpires who assisted on the day.

The ACC Athletics Carnival is taking place this Friday 4 September (as you are reading this) at the State Athletics Stadium, just near HBF Stadium. We have a team of 60 students who will be running, jumping, and throwing their way through the H-Division Carnival.

St George’s won H-Division last year but we were not elevated due to a new J-Division opening and keeping the division groupings even, we were required to remain in H. Mr Racey just said that “we will just have to win it again!”. The very best of luck to all competitors.

A new initiative by the ACC is live streaming of the track events at this year’s ACC Athletics Carnival. School Administration ENROLMENT WITHDRAWALS Whilst we are always saddened when any of our families leave us, reality suggests that it does happen from time to time for various reasons. Therefore, a reminder to families considering a change in 2021, whether that be because of moving house/State or other, notice to the School must be received no later than Friday 25 September (last day of Term 3) or Term 1 2021 fees will be charged in lieu, in accordance with the forms signed at enrolment. To explain that better, if your child notifies their 2021 withdrawal at any point after the date listed above, a full terms fees (Term 1, 2021) will be charged to the family account.

In saying this, it is hoped our families stay with us and we continue the education journey with you all.

Computer Rental Agreement Computers are not always reliable and will sometimes fail and require repairs. This causes the student to, sometimes, go without a computer for a couple of weeks. The School can now offer free loan computers when required. Parents/guardians, please fill out and sign the agreement form here and allow the IT department 24 hours to prepare a computer for use.

Student Term Dates - 2021 Term 1 29 January - 01 April New Student Orientation, 28 January Students Mid Term Break, Friday 26 February Term 2 21 April - 02 July Students Mid Term Break, Friday 4 June Enrolments The School Enrolment Policy requires one full term’s notice in writing prior to the withdrawal of a student from the School.

Where such notice is not received, the School will charge an amount equal to the tuition fees for that current term.

To avoid fees in lieu being charged, notice of a student’s withdrawal must be received by the School before the first day of the School Term preceding the Term of the student’s departure.

If this does not occur, families will be charged the remainder of the current Term, plus an additional Terms fee in lieu.

Battery Recycling Used batteries are being collected in the IT Manager’s office. Please take advantage of this free facility.

What batteries can be collected?

Dry cell batteries include AA, AAA (single use or rechargeable), C, D, button batteries, 9V, 6V and cordless power tools.

What batteries cannot be collected?

Lead acid batteries, such as car batteries, and mobile phone batteries cannot be collected.

Please contact your local council for details of how to dispose of these batteries.

If the account has been paid in full and a refund is due, payment will be processed for the full refund due within seven days of exit.
