From the Editor Early in my career, I sat in a tense meeting between a US federal agency and a Utahbased organization. Years earlier, the federal agency had been in charge of a project that, unfortunately, resulted in negative outcomes that impacted generations of residents. This meeting was the culmination of years of conversations between intermediaries to see if there was an equitable solution for the harm that was done to this group. As the meeting progressed, the feeling of tension in the room was palpable. The agency felt it had rectified the damages the best that it could while the local organization demanded further reparations.

The meeting ended after emotional accusations and pleas. Nothing was accomplished. The two sides dug in their heels, and everyone walked away frustrated and empty handed.

A common phrase used in my home growing up was “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” This phrase has stuck with me my entire career. In fact, the value of those twelve words has only increased over time.

Our community has proven time after time that we can endure through hard times. We’ve battled a global pandemic and emerged stronger. We’re experiencing unprecedented community and economic growth. To come out on top of these challenges will require our entire community to work together. Some may not like the growth, but it’s coming.

We can either be a part of the solution and help to manage this growth, or we can be part of the problem by slinging stones at those who are doing their best to navigate these changes. Are we digging in our heels, or are we rolling up our sleeves? Are we talking in circles, or taking action?

More than ever, we need problem solvers not kingdom builders. We need collaborators not nay-sayers. There is enough recognition to go around, and we need the best and brightest coming to the table to help our community move forward.

As we launch a new year, I invite you to be a positive contributor to the unprecedented opportunities that await our community. I hope you’re inspired to take action as you read this issue of the Southern Utah Business Magazine. Come be a part of the solution.

Growing the Deep Roots of Economic Prosperity How a Maturing Tech Sector Can Make Growth Sustainable and Correct the Imbalances of Transplanted Wealth

N

early twenty years ago, I was an editorial intern at The Spectrum in St. George. I typically covered city council and planning commission meetings. Occasionally I got to chase some interesting breaking news, like the time a small crop plane dumped pink fire retardant all over a residential neighborhood to avert crashing.

One day, the city editor assigned me an investigative piece on “power commuters.” I spent a few weeks doing research and interviewing people who lived in Washington County but worked in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and even Los Angeles.

Everyone I interviewed said the same thing: they wanted to live in southern Utah but couldn’t find a job in their chosen field.

Two decades later, I’ve spent most of my career outside of southern Utah, mostly working with tech companies in Silicon Slopes, Silicon Valley, and elsewhere.

Meanwhile, some of my oldest friends who still reside in southern Utah are living the power commuter lifestyle I first learned about as a college freshman all those years ago.

A lot has changed in the last twenty years.

The southwestern corner of the state has expanded its built boundaries, added many new businesses, and generated major momentum as a destination for tourists, snowbirds, and remote workers.

Still, some very important things remain the same. Southern Utah still relies too heavily on its legacy industries and doesn’t offer enough career optionality for many workers.

We need a 2030 goal of vanquishing “power commuter” from our lexicon.

That won’t be possible if we do what we’ve always done. We need to build on our core strengths while simultaneously supporting efforts to deepen economic roots in emerging industries that offer high-paying careers.

A Boom-Bust Economy If you want to find common ground in an era of divisiveness, start a conversation about the cost of living in southern Utah.

Almost everyone agrees that the price tag to live in one of the most starkly beautiful places in the world doesn’t jive with the economic realities facing most residents.

Housing is a powerful example. At this writing, the median household income in Washington County was just below the national median of $51,000 per year. At that income level, a family can afford a home in the $350,000 range given current interest rates and a meaningful down payment.

That won’t cut it in St. George, where the median home sale price is more than $450,000, about 60 percent higher than the 2006 peak. Longtime residents and new move-ins alike find themselves either unable to buy or spooked by the prospect of another 2008-style correction, which hit Washington County’s housingdependent economy especially hard.

Right now, the local economy is superheated by an unprecedented influx of money made elsewhere. That’s a reflection of how popular southern Utah has become as a destination—the place is the product. To balance the scales, we need better paths for those who already live here to earn a living commensurate with the elevated cost of living.

Washington County has one of the most “diverse” economies in Utah, according to a 2017 Hatchman Index study by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah. That’s a good thing because economic diversity, like biological diversity, is the foundation for a healthy, self-sustaining ecosystem.

Continued from Page 7 And yet southern Utah’s economic breadth is not matched in depth. While we have a multitude of industries, very few of them are mature enough to offer robust professional opportunities and career mobility for workers in a wide range of fields. The Washington County workforce is too reliant on jobs in its legacy industries: construction and real estate, healthcare and medicine, and travel and tourism.

If you want to be a software developer, mechanical engineer, or senior HR leader, you’ve historically gone elsewhere.

Southern Utah doesn’t have a jobs problem. The region’s 2 percent unemployment rate beats the state’s all-time low rate of 2.2 percent, suggesting that the supply of jobs outstrips demand for them.

Southern Utah does have a professional mobility problem. We have too few of the right kinds of jobs for a varied workforce. The local adages of “Our biggest export is our kids” and “Make sure you have your second job lined up” ring true and reflect lots of career ladders but not enough rungs.

Reaching Deeper In 2020, Natalie Gochnour, director of the University of Utah’s Gardner Policy Institute, wrote a paper in American Affairs about “Utah’s economic exceptionalism.” In it, she draws a causal link between the Beehive State’s red-hot economic engine and high social mobility. In other words, she argues, Utah’s economy is great because it’s easier for people in the poorest quintile to climb into the richest one.

Brad Plothow is Chief Growth Officer at Intergalactic, a St. George startup serving the defense aerospace, civil aviation, and commercial space sectors. He has spent the last decade helping tech companies grow in Silicon Slopes, Silicon Valley, and beyond.

This kind of social mobility is a relatively recent phenomenon. In decades past, Utah’s economy was dominated by a few industries, namely manufacturing, transportation, mining, customer support, hospitality and tourism, and niche industries like nutraceuticals (read: MLMs). Over the past two decades, however, a number of tech-centric and tech-enabled industries have created truly massive economic value and produced clear professional paths in fields like software engineering, product management, marketing, sales, human resources, finance, and more.

As these industries have matured, so have a litany of supporting professional services and investment partners. Success breeds success, and capital attracts more capital. All this serves to open new doors for workers, which incentivizes higher education, specialized training, and professional development for folks who keep their talents and spending power at home.

This ecosystem exists along the Wasatch Front. Now it’s southern Utah’s turn to build our own. We have the beginnings of a tech corridor on Tech Ridge—a literal shining city on a hill—to attract talent, investment, and opportunity. We have burgeoning software, biotech, and aerospace industries. And we have strong educational institutions to feed the talent needs of homegrown and transplanted companies, most of which will be small businesses with deep pockets.

We need to maintain southern Utah’s core industries and deepen our roots in key tech-centric and tech-enabled sectors. Many residents will continue to find fulfilling careers in healthcare, real estate, construction, or hospitality. Soon, many others will pursue technical or professional careers at tech companies that pay 82 percent above the state median income.

Over time, shallow roots will grow deep. That’s good for everyone.

A Community Thriving Within Our Community

T

he people of southern Utah and Utah in general have long had histories of thriving amidst difficult situations. This is especially true for its early Native-American inhabitants, whose literal existence depended upon their ability to adapt to nature’s changes and to carve out an existence by drawing life and wisdom from nature, and for the early pioneer settlers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, who overcame privation, droughts, floods, harsh winters, cricket infestations, prejudice, bigotry, and government persecution to eventually thrive in the wilderness that they called home. They accomplished this unprecedented task by working tirelessly together with a strong spirit of industry and community.

In recognition of this spirit, these early settlers adopted the beehive to symbolize the cooperative effort and hard work that would eventually make the desert bloom. To this symbol, they attached the name Deseret (honeybee).

Growth. Strengthened by these skilled associates, Deseret Laboratories has grown from a two-man operation to one of the largest contract manufacturers of dietary supplements and pharmaceutical products in the Western United States, employing nearly 200 southern Utah residents.

Heritage. In 1986, two of St. George’s native sons, Scott and Mark Gubler, adopted the name of Deseret for their fledgling company, which they named Deseret Laboratories, Inc. They hoped to engender the pioneer spirit of industry and community within their organization as it adapted to the changes and opportunities that lay ahead of it in the blossoming life science industry of Utah.

Since its early beginnings of mining and processing pharmaceutical grade gypsum for use as a filler in pharmaceutical products, Deseret Laboratories has endeavored to build a company family of like-minded individuals into a team that shares the same values of hard work, industry, and community support that will ensure the continuation of those values in the years to come.

Key Personnel. Deseret Labs has been fortunate to build a talented management team possessing vast and diverse experience, with many key personnel having strong southern Utah roots. Many of these key personnel spent years gaining valuable experience outside of St. George before returning home to southern Utah to ply their knowledge. These key management positions include a Juris Doctorate, MBAs, PhDs, chemists, microbiologists, mechanical engineers, quality managers, plant managers, mechanics, fabricators, supply chain managers, inventory control managers, accountants, HR professionals, marketing executives, production supervisors, and logistics specialists. Together these talented individuals keep the company moving forward and growing. When you add to this team the many highly trained operators, line workers, and support personnel that skillfully manufacture each product, a truly extraordinary community exists.

Building upon a foundation that utilizes its own patented “Gublair” granulation equipment and technology, Deseret Labs provides fluid-bed, high-shear, and Wurster agglomeration of powders for use in tablets, capsules, stick packs, or drink mixes in both the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. Over the years, Deseret Lab’s custom contract manufacturing and research services have also expanded to include blending, tableting, coating, encapsulation, bottling, packeting, effervescents, and stick packing. A parallel expansion has taken Deseret Labs in the direction of supplying pharmaceuticals and COVID diagnostic testing supplies and equipment to the United States, the Middle East, and Asia.

Markets. Over 85 percent of the products that Deseret Laboratories manufacturers are exported to markets outside of the United States and can be found in Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, the Middle East, Israel, Europe, the UK, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and many other countries.

In August 2021, Forbes magazine ranked Utah as number one in the nation for GDP growth, despite the pandemic.

Utah’s GDP has grown an astounding 19.1 percent over the last five years.

Continued from Page 11 The southern Utah business community certainly reflects this vibrant growth, and Deseret Laboratories is no exception. Open orders for Deseret’s contract services have increased by 50 percent during the pandemic as the world embraces individual efforts to eat and live healthier.

Deseret Labs will soon be completing a new 40,000 square foot manufacturing and warehousing addition, bringing its overall St. George facility to 175,000 square feet.

The Future. As St. George residents who are proud of their southern Utah heritage, it is exciting for Deseret Labs to contribute to the local economy and in its own small way, give back to the community that has given them so much.

Deseret Laboratories is honored to have its name associated with the new Deseret Laboratories Chemistry Lab located within Dixie State University’s recently dedicated Science, Engineering, and Technology building and looks forward to being able to provide DSU students an option to live and work in southern Utah following their graduation.

As a member of BioUtah, Deseret Laboratories is pleased to be a part of the thriving life science community of Utah that we now call BioHive.

Terri Kane

Regional Vice President of Intermountain Healthcare, Southern Utah (Retired) Intermountain Healthcare is the north star for healthcare in the St. George area, and Terri Kane is at the center of it’s growth and innovation. When she retired as the vice president of Intermountain Healthcare for southern Utah in 2020, she had nearly forty years of experience in the fields of hospital operations, corporate operations, executive leadership, and nursing.

Terri is known as a champion of excellence. She led Intermountain’s Women & Children’s Clinical Program for five years and is recognized for her work with Intermountain’s clinical integration strategies. Under her leadership, Dixie Regional Medical Center (now St. George Regional Hospital) grew from 126 to 332 beds, including the addition of the River Road hospital campus. Open heart surgery, newborn intensive care, neurosurgery, Life Flight, level II trauma status, precision medicine, and many other significant additions and services were added to St. George Regional Hospital’s portfolio during her tenure as administrator.

In 2011, Kane became the southwest regional vice-president, overseeing Dixie Regional, Cedar City, and Garfield Memorial hospitals. She is largely responsible for much of the healthcare landscape in the Washington County area today.

Terri is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

She received her MBA from the University of Phoenix and her undergraduate degree in nursing from Weber State University.

She is a real estate agent with ERA Realty in St. George and continues to actively participate on local community and national healthcare advisory boards.

Dr. Wayne Provost

Director of the Dixie State University Innovation, Guidance, and Solutions Center Dr. Wayne Provost attended the University of Utah as an undergraduate student and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and Dentistry. While in private practice, he donated five years to the University of Utah Burn Center making obturators for burn patients.

After retirement from private practice, Wayne served in an executive position for FHP Health Care in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and California. Later, he founded P5 E-Health Services and P5 Provider Pay. He retired in Las Vegas, Nevada, prior to moving to St. George, Utah.

For the past fifty years, Wayne has been associated with multiple patents, including medical software, medical devices, dental fiber optics, green energy power sources, and re-sealable cartons.

Wayne and his wife, Donna, have dedicated the past fifteen years of their lives to helping others. They and their daughter Emma founded Teens Kickin’ Cancer, a high school youth leadership program, after the passing of their seventeen-year-old son and brother Dusty in 2009. Dr. Provost is the founding director of the Innovation Guidance and Solutions Center at Dixie State University, where he helps students and community members secure patents on their inventions and launch functioning businesses.

Stephen Wade

Founder and Chairman, Stephen Wade Auto Center Stephen Wade was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Marcia Chalk of Mesa, Arizona, and they have four sons, one daughter, and twenty grandchildren. For many years, their family lived in Salt Lake City, but in 1993, St. George, Utah, became their home.

Stephen has been a new car automobile dealer since 1973. In 1981, he was elected president of the Utah Automobile Dealers Association and served as Utah’s representative for the National Automobile Dealers Association. In 2011, he was elected as the national chairman, representing America’s new car and truck dealers. In January 2013, he was inducted into the Utah Automobile Dealers Hall of Fame.

Stephen has owned multiple franchises in Utah and California and has served on numerous factory committees and boards. Currently, his franchises include Toyota, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Nissan, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Ram, Honda, Mazda, and Mercedes Benz/Sprinter in Utah.

Active in the St. George community, Stephen served twelve years as a trustee of Dixie State College (now known as Dixie State University), with seven of those years as its chairman. In 2007, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities degree. He served on the Select Health Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2012. In 2014, he was voted one of southern Utah’s most influential men. In 2016, Stephen was selected as a Significant Sig from Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Currently, he is serving as trustee and representative for Dixie Applied Technology College.

Small Businesses Bringing Charm to Southern Utah A Checklist for Those Looking to Hang Their Shingle

outhern Utah offers warm weather, great hiking, and many special event locations. More importantly, however, it has become a home for small businesses. For the past decade, Utah has been one of the fastest growing states in the nation, and a large part of that growth has taken place in the southern Utah area. Outof-staters and local Utahns alike are moving to this community for the small town atmosphere and the beauty of the iconic red rock scenery.

This growth in population includes entrepreneurial individuals who are shaping the future of the area. New small businesses are opening at a rapid pace, while long-standing small businesses continue to thrive.

Entrepreneurs are finding ways to innovate while maintaining the charm that attracts so many. Because of this, a youthful, timeless spirit has been injected into the area.

Although small businesses may be drawn to opening up shop in this area, southern Utah needs them to survive into the future. In order to have longevity, a strong foundation needs to be laid upon which these businesses can build and grow. There is no doubt that a business must consider items such as client development, marketing, and networking.

However, important legal considerations must be addressed as a form of "housekeeping." The old adage rings true: get your house in order.

Here is a brief, non-exclusive checklist of legal considerations each entrepreneur should address before “hanging their shingle”:

Continued from Page 19 • Determine the proper business structure. A business can be formed under various structures, including a limited liability company (LLC), a corporation, or a partnership. The type of structure you choose will largely depend on the type of business you are contemplating. It also depends on what assets you are looking to protect and where you see your business in the future. A limited liability company (LLC) is a preferable option for small businesses.

• Have strong governing documents in place. Depending on the type of business structure, a solid operating agreement or clear bylaws will help avoid confusion as to the operation of the business. These types of governing documents help memorialize things such as decision-making authority, compensation, profit sharing, and even what occurs upon the death of an owner.

• Develop appropriate employment practices. Most problems in a business stem from its workforce. Developing and following clear guidelines will help avoid issues with employees and penalties from governmental agencies. Examples of good employment practices may include providing employee handbooks; thorough, proper, and/or ongoing training; good hiring and firing practices; or the proper classification of workers (e.g. employee versus independent contractor).

• Maintain business relationships through written agreements. Though it is easy and sometimes more convenient to operate a small business using verbal agreements and “hand-shake” deals, this type of business practice can, and often does, create bigger problems. No one wants to believe a relationship will go sour, but it is better to take preventative measures on the front end rather than play defense on the back end.

Southern Utah has the potential to be a centerpiece for commerce. Small businesses have always played and will continue to play a key role. As the great entrepreneur Jerry Maguire once said, “Show me the money!”

Women: The Additive That Boosts Business Success

I

recently made a presentation to a group of auto dealer executives who were interested in learning how to increase the numbers of women employed throughout the company’s enterprise. The motives were honest and pure: the CEO had become enlightened about the value of gender diversity. The company had little of it; he wanted more of it. He knew the why; he wanted to know the how. He wanted managers to be ready and willing to change the long-standing traditions of doing business a certain way—a way that had long excluded women.

As each of the men introduced themselves, several mentioned that they had a specific motivation for their newfound engagement in women’s leadership: they had daughters.

While having daughters seems to click on a lightbulb for many men, there are many additional reasons to commit to greater gender diversity and to elevating women in business. Currently, women are plentiful in entry and office positions, but intentionally building the pipeline for women in leadership within companies is becoming the winning way for successful organizations. For instance, it is widely recognized that women make or highly influence more than 80 percent of consumer decisions. To ignore the massive influence of women who decide what and where to purchase products and services is to do so at your own peril. The business case for at least 30 percent women in senior level positions is widely considered best practice, especially if companies want to increase ROI, improve retention levels, and enhance employee morale. Moreover, women in leadership attract other female talent.

Seven years ago, some of Utah’s prominent business leaders described their vision for the Women’s Leadership Institute, and the organization was formed. WLI is a business-led 501(c)3 housed in the Salt Lake Chamber. Importantly, the organization considers men as allies and advocates of women and includes equal numbers of men on their board.

At the time of WLI’s formation, Utah was struggling to recruit and retain talent along the Wasatch Front. Compounding the problem was a persistent perception among many, especially outside of the state, that Utah was a backward place for women. That perception often became one of the most perplexing barriers to recruiting critical talent in the state. In fact, one national publication put Utah women on par with women in Turkey, Indonesia, El Salvador, and Saudi Arabia.

Leading WLI has been one of my most fulfilling endeavors.

My background in business and in politics seemed to align with the vision of our business community: to elevate the stature of women in business and in politics. WLI has been developing the talents of women through its Career Development Series and its Political Development Series. To date, more than 600 Utah women have been beneficiaries of these leadership development cohorts.

WLI’s cornerstone, the ElevateHER™ Challenge, has been a huge success for Utah businesses. Accepting and implementing the ElevateHER Challenge does not require disclosure of private information, and accepting the challenge requires no financial obligation. Rather, the ElevateHER Challenge provides a template of research-based goals that companies follow at their own pace, defined by their own individual company culture.

Companies that accept the ElevateHER Challenge are utilizing it as a springboard for beginning important, new internal conversations. That dialogue is bringing enlightenment and candor to management. It is enhancing relationships.

It is making a difference in attracting and retaining talent.

Thanks to the vision and passion of Don Willie, President of the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce, the Women’s Leadership Institute recently expanded to southern Utah, formalizing a relationship with that Chamber. WLI considered southern Utah as the most ripe and ready geographical area for expansion because of its significant growth and the need for guidance in gender diversity. In fact, a recent article in Utah Business Magazine predicted that “St. George could become Utah’s next tech hub.”

As CEO of the Women’s Leadership Institute and a new, permanent resident of St. George, I look forward to working with businesses here and throughout the state of Utah, educating men and women about the value of gender diversity to the success of individual businesses and to Utah’s economy.

Investing even small amounts can grow to large sums over time.

A

common question I am asked by new clients is how much money they need in order to start investing. People often assume it takes a large sum of money to get started. The truth is that you don’t need much, and when it comes to investing, one size does not fit all.

Obviously, the more money you invest, the greater your potential return. But that also comes with associated risks. The best way to determine how much money you should start investing is by following three simple steps: assessing your financial situation, determining your budget, and crafting an investment strategy. Here is a closer look at the process I follow with my clients:

1. Assess your current financial situation.

The first step in determining how much money you need to start investing consists of assessing your current budget, income, assets, and debt.

First, determine the amount of your income and where it’s being allocated. Ask yourself, “How much of my income covers needs? How much covers wants? How much covers debt?

How much is allocated to savings?” Look at all these numbers and see where you can cut back and where you may need to supplement.

To get the best representation of your current financial situation, make sure you are keeping track of your financial data. There are a handful of tools that can help track your spending habits and help you stay on budget. Here are a few popular options: • YNAB (Youneedabudget.com) • Mint (Mint.intuit.com) • Excel (Microsoft.com) These are just a few applications that can help you keep track of your finances, but there are so many other ways you can do this. Most tools offer a free trial. I would recommend you try a few, and pick the one that aligns best with your approach.

2. Determine your budget.

Now that you’ve looked at all the numbers and determined where your money is being spent, it’s time to determine what you can change or how you can alter your budget to set yourself up for success. Maybe you’re spending too much money on wants that you could be putting toward savings, debt, or investments instead.

Knowledge is power. If you understand where your budget is lacking, you can figure out how to improve your spending habits.

The key to following a budget is organization.

As you look at your financial numbers each month, you’ll create accountability and remind yourself of how much of your income you have allocated to each subgroup. This is where budgeting apps come in handy.

The reason investing has no one-size-fitsall approach is because income, debt, and spending are not one size fits all. When creating your budget, you need to do what’s best for you. Outside of covering your needs, what are your goals and priorities when it comes to finances? If you have a lot of high-interest debt, maybe you should allocate more of your income to reducing and/or getting rid of this debt rather than establishing an emergency fund. Budgeting is personal and specific to your needs and goals.

3. Start Investing.

Once you have a good understanding of your budget, you can see how much money you have to work with when investing. I often remind my clients that starting small is better than not starting at all. Investing even small amounts can grow to large sums over time. To illustrate this point, someone who starts saving $5,000 per year at age twenty-five will have more than twice as much money by age sixty-five than someone who waits until age thirty-five to start saving. Compound interest is a beautiful thing.

The key is to just get started. Even if you start with a smaller amount, you can always increase your investments over time as your financial situation permits. To maximize the amount you invest, consider adding anything extra that you accumulate. This could include things like tax returns, work bonuses, cash gifts, or other special lump sums.

Now that you’ve figured out how much to invest, it’s time to determine where to invest. This is where an experienced financial advisor steps in. A 2019 Vanguard study, Putting Value on my Value, found that, on average, a $500,000 investment would grow to over $3.4 million under the care of an advisor over twenty-five years, whereas the expected value from self-management would be $1.69 million—50 percent less. In other words, an advisor-managed portfolio would average 8 percent annualized growth over a twenty-five-year period compared to 5 percent from a self-managed portfolio.

ay for pencils? Pay for books? Pay for the ramen your student cooks?

A 529 plan is an investment vehicle designed specifically to save for qualified education expenses. my529, Utah’s official state plan, offers certain tax advantages when funds are used for those expenses and penalties when used for anything else.

What is a qualified education expense? my529 can offer some answers (spoiler alert: ramen is included).

The largest costs that my529 funds cover are tuition, room, and board. Money from 529 plans can be used at any college, university, trade, or technical school that is eligible to accept federal financial aid. This includes institutions in Utah, the United States, and abroad. Room and board are eligible expenses for students enrolled at least half time at one of these institutions. This includes off-campus apartments, utilities, internet access, and food if funds used do not exceed the cost of attendance set by the college.

Other eligible expense categories are books and supplies.

That first trip to the bookstore—to find expensive, massive textbooks for which you already have large reading assignments—can be less overwhelming with my529 funds invested ahead of time.

Computers, peripheral equipment, educational software, and internet access are also eligible expenses.

US Economy The US economy posted modest gains in the third quarter of 2021, even while consumers began to slow spending. While Q2 brought a dramatic snap-back of the US economy postpandemic, Q3 was characterized by bottlenecks, supply chain problems, the Delta variant, and an equity market pullback in September. The GDP projections were also tempered to 5.7 percent, down from the 7.9 percent projections last quarter, with

talks of the accommodating financial policies beginning to unwind in the upcoming year. Inflation continues to be an issue and the Fed has stated that the current inflation spike is a product of supply constraints colliding with the very strong demand.

US Real Estate Market The residential housing market is a sizable chunk of the US GDP at roughly five percent. Simply stated, demand for housing is still outpacing the shrinking standing supply. Mortgage rates remain at rock bottom, adding to demand by eager, first-time home buyers. However, these buyers are also seeing historically high home prices, with values rising at the fastest rate since the 1970s. The median home price nationally climbed up 13.3 percent year-over-year to $352,800.

This marks 115+ straight months of year-over-year increases.

Unlike housing bubbles, which imply an over-inflated market, the current conditions shape up as more of a boom.

Market conditions are very different from 2007, with qualified and verified buyers paired with a genuine shortage of supply driving the current demand.

Housing prices are expected to stay elevated with further single-digit percentage increases likely if more supply doesn’t come to market in 2022.

The Utah Market Utah has become a magnet for inmigration with many looking to improve their quality of life and enjoy an overall lower cost of living. Utah is one of only two states that has a fully-recovered job market; the only other state is Idaho. Increasing from $385,000 to $490,000, the Salt Lake City metro area ranks second nationwide for yearover-year median sales price increases at 27.3 percent. Ranking first is Boise, Idaho, which rose from $369,990 to $476,587, a 28.8 percent increase.

Along the Wasatch Front, the average sold price has increased year-over-year by 21.1 percent to $544,282. Southern Utah has seen a 33.2 percent increase to $535,141, and the Wasatch Back has seen a 25.1 percent increase to $1,690,706. Standing inventory statewide is still low, but this past September saw an increase to 8,586 units for sale, up from the low of 6,278 earlier that year. Four Principles for Growth in 2022

Ringing in a new year provides a great opportunity to evaluate goals and forecast new milestones. However, as many of us know all too well, New Year’s resolutions often fall short of their expectations as life’s inevitable challenges stifle our plans. Even so, there are ways we can combat this and see our resolutions to fruition. As we put another economically tumultuous year behind us, let’s explore four principles to achieve massive growth in 2022.

Purpose There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.

–Napoleon Hill A hallmark of great leaders and organizations is a clear and compelling purpose. It’s not enough to just sell a product or offer a service anymore. Your purpose or “reason for being” is what makes your offer compelling! Here are a few questions you should ask yourself if you’re ready to uncover your purpose: • Why did you create your business?

• Why does your business exist?

• Why does your business matter to your customers?

• Why must you succeed?

• What do people experience when they engage with you?

Your purpose is your value. When customers feel the connection between purpose and product, their experience changes completely. It becomes engaging and magnetic.

Who knows? You might even capture some evangelists.

Direction “If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you do?”

–Unknown Purpose is critical to your business, but without direction, purpose becomes aimless. If you could achieve anything in your business over the next five years with the assurance of success, what would you do? This is your direction.

The more important question that follows is, “Are you currently progressing toward that objective?” If the answer is no, it might be time to adjust your direction. Why are you not on track? What roadblocks are you facing? Are they internal (you) or external (people and processes)?

Success requires action. What is the ultimate version of your business? Take some time to strategize beyond revenue figures or growth percentages. Think outside the box, and consider your strategy through the lens of value creation, human impact, industry disruption, and milestone achievements.

Intention “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” –Henry Ford One reason I struggle with New Year’s resolutions is because I am not a big fan of goals. I find people rarely reach their goals.

Too often, I see people shoot for the stars but never actually invest or believe in the outcome. It can be quite defeating to keep falling short.

Conversely, people always seem to meet their expectations— the non-negotiables of life. Thus, the only way to actually progress is to raise your expectations. In the language of goal setting, this implies that reaching your goal is to become your goal—to believe in and embody the result before you even start. In other words, to live life with intention.

Let’s say you wanted to become a triathlete this year. Most people would start training and when ready, sign up for a race. If you were living with intention, you would start by signing up for the race, announcing your plan to your peers, using Photoshop to create a poster of the finish line (with a specific time in mind), and then manifesting your intentions with decisive action.

This works in the business world, too. Find a mentor or company that epitomizes your objective, and start modeling their strategy. Aristotle said it best: “It is easier to copy a genius than to create mediocrity.”

Be intentional with every move. Focus on your direction, and anchor yourself to the expectations you must hit along the way. Be deliberate, and enlist the support of anyone who can help push you across the finish line.

–Mike Tyson Even if 2021 exceeded your wildest expectations, you still need to be ready to adapt in 2022. Everything about our economy and market is volatile. A single tweet can shift crypto and stock markets, and a virus can spark a world-wide pandemic and change the course of history. You must be prepared to adapt if you want to sustain your position and more importantly, to grow. Blockbuster and Kodak are powerful examples of companies who failed to see the market evolve and failed to adapt. I can promise you that the punch is coming. Are your eyes open? Are you ready for the hit?

Darwin is attributed to have said, “It’s not the strongest of the species nor the most intelligent that survives but the ones most responsive to change.” Any entrepreneur or sales leader will tell you how important adaptation is in business. MedLite ID: An Innovation That Reduces Infusion Confusion While America’s healthcare system is no stranger to criticism and you likely already know about its need for reform, you may be surprised to learn where the spotlight is shining on the IV lines hooked up to patients in ICUs, operating rooms, and COVID-19 units. These soft, flexible tubes are designed to deliver medications of all types, yet only one line, the “safe line,” can be used to infuse a life-saving medicine, as the other lines are dedicated to specific drugs. It raises this question: if a patient has between four and twenty IV lines in their body, how will a medical professional know the right line to use when a “code blue” is ringing out and every second matters?

The tangled mess of IV lines is called “infusion confusion” by those working on the front lines, and unfortunately, mistakes are sometimes made. You might ask, “How many IV lines would I need to have before the risk of a potentially fatal mistake is real?” The answer: one. For every IV line started after the first one, the potential for error increases by 3 percent. When there are eleven IV lines, there is a 30 percent chance of an error.

These errors are called Adverse Drug Events (ADEs), and the size of the issue is alarming: 56 percent of all ADEs are infusion-related, the result of caregivers choosing the wrong infusion line. In a time of COVID-19 care, with an increase in the number of patients and a shortage of nurses, “line tracing” needs to be fast and effective.

“In today’s COVID world, we routinely keep the pumps outside the patient’s room with

fifteen feet of connected tubing going to a triple lumen catheter,” said one acute nurse. “There may be six to eight powerful meds (vasoactive drips and sedatives), and an IV push medication given in the wrong line could be fatal. You try tracing eight look-alike lines to the patient’s port and see how easy it is! Clearly identifying the ‘carrier’ would be made so easy with the clip-on MedLite ID device.”

Although infusion confusion is potentially harmful to patients, it is also very costly.

60 to 90 percent of all IV infusions in the United States contain one or more errors that can lead to accidental death, causing hospitals to pay an average of $2,200 per per day per every 100 beds in avoidable ADE costs. This does not count upwards of $5 million in estimated wrongful-death legal costs should such an error occur.

Investing in a safer and higher quality of care for both patients and caregivers by making it simpler to choose the right line and reduce COVID-19 exposure could save lives and bring down these costs.

Consumer Confidence in Utah

e live in a unique time. The uncertainty of the pandemic is a new experience for both consumers and businesses. It is a time of continual change: repeated openings and closings of businesses and schools, new COVID variants, supply issues, and “the great resignation.” The past two years may impact consumer behaviors and economic decisions for years to come.

Consumers’ economic decisions are generally determined by their confidence in the economy. When the economy is growing, consumer confidence generally increases along with spending.

Conversely, when confidence in the economy diminishes, consumers feel less financial security and pull back on spending, resulting in a decline in sales for businesses. Surveys measuring consumer confidence have been particularly important in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID and its impact on the broad economy.

In 2020, the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute began conducting a Utah consumer confidence survey using five key questions from the University of Michigan’s eighty-year old Survey of Consumers. The questions focus on current family financial situation relative to one year ago, expected future change in family financial situation, business conditions expected during the following

year, business conditions expected over the next five years, and current buying conditions for large household goods.

This monthly index, based on a survey of 400 Utahns, provides a measure of the general optimism or pessimism of the state’s consumers and can indicate the economy’s strength.

The most important consideration when reading the index is to look at the trend over time. While it may be instinctive to compare month-to-month figures or look at a particular month compared to the same month from the previous year, these comparisons can be misleading. The current trend shows that consumer confidence has not reached its pre-pandemic level at either the national or state levels.

A number of factors influence the confidence of consumers, including unemployment, the stock market, inflation, and changes in housing prices.

Imbalances in the economy can create inflation, which lowers confidence. Many Utah consumers are currently feeling the impact of rising prices, particularly at the gas pump and in housing.

• “ I got another job, but inflation is bad, so our financial situation is about the same.”

• “ My income hasn’t changed, but prices have gone up.”

• “ The prices are rising. Inflation is rampant, and the only thing that has offset it is the value of our home.”

When asked whether now is a good or bad time to buy major household items, Utahns responded with the following comments: • “ It depends on your financial situation; some can afford it while others can’t.”

• “ It’s a bad time because supply isn’t there.”

Interestingly, Utah’s low unemployment rate helps potential employees find work, but makes it difficult for employers to fill positions. Many employees have left low-paying jobs to find higherpaying positions. While the percent of homeownership in Utah is one of the highest in the country, approximately one-third do not own a home. Increasing home prices and rent costs have been difficult for many consumers with lower incomes. The ongoing pandemic has had a significant impact on consumer behavior for almost two years.

“Utah consumers continue to feel the impact of the long arm of COVID,” said Natalie Gochnour, Director of the Gardner Institute. “Supply chain disruptions, inflation worries, and uncertainty about the virus continue to mute consumer confidence, even as the Utah economy leads the nation in job creation.”

Even with these challenges, Utah residents consistently express more confidence in the state’s economy than in the US economy. In every month of comparable measures, Utah’s index exceeds the nation’s, which means Utah consumers are more confident than their national peers.

In a recent survey, Utahns were asked to comment on whether they were better or worse off financially than a year ago.

Their responses, listed below, illustrate some of the economic challenges facing Utah residents.

2022 Outlook As has always been the case, the economy will continue to have peaks and valleys, and consumer confidence will rise and fall. Inflation and COVID-19 will continue to loom large for consumer confidence during the coming year. Consumers are hopeful that the pandemic will soon wane, becoming less contagious with fewer serious symptoms. Moderating inflation should give a boost to consumer confidence in both Utah and the US.

This year, in addition to these resolutions, perhaps you can resolve to take steps to refresh your home. A completed home improvement project, even a small one, can make a big difference in the comfort and enjoyment of your space year round.

Having an orderly kitchen space creates a feeling of calm and makes it easier to find what you’re looking for. Before purchasing organizational tools, experts recommend removing all of the items in your kitchen. Sort kitchen items into three separate piles: keep, discard, or donate.

Once you’ve determined your essential kitchen gear, consider placing similar items together in the same general storage area.

Create green spaces.

Add a splash of color.

Plants can improve your overall comfort. There are many varieties of plants conducive to staying alive and well inside your home. Popular types of indoor plants include aloe, English ivy, rubber tree, ficus, and areca palm. If you’re looking for stylish ways to incorporate plants into your existing home décor, consider grouping plants in an odd number, and select different sizes for an informal, inviting look. Plants with a variety of leaf colors, textures, and pots can make your greenery arrangement stand out.

You don’t have to repaint the entire interior of your home to make a difference in your décor. Adding a splash of color, such as painting an accent wall, can transform a living area. Experts recommend pulling colors from existing features in the room you want to paint to help you determine the best paint palette for your space. The color you select should flow well with the rest of your home. Hardware stores often have sample sizes or paint swatches with suggested color collections on hand to make it easy.

Automate Tasks As any business owner can tell you, it’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day operations of running a business. However, in today’s technology-rich environment, there is no excuse worth putting off the automation of your business. Companies like Zapier offer the perfect opportunity to make time-intensive tasks simple, like sending birthday messages to clients, notifying your team members when a customer makes a purchase, or uploading e-sign documents to your Google Drive automatically. If you add up the time saved on these easy tasks, don’t be surprised by how many hours (or days) you get back.

Streamline Calendars Time management is one of the most difficult tasks to accomplish, no matter how long you have been in business.

Keeping track of appointments, tasks, due dates, and more can easily be completed using calendars like Google Calendars, and it’s free! Practice putting all of this information in a single calendar and use systems like Google as your team grows so that you can easily track each other’s availability.

Use Social Media Social media has incredible power. You can increase sales, drive traffic to websites, build a following, create brand awareness, and more. How do you get started? Simple. Create free social media accounts. Then what? Simple again. You can join groups, create posts, comment on posts, offer your expertise, give reviews, or create content. For most, putting yourself and your brand out there can be difficult. Fortunately, there are people and businesses willing to do it for you.

Centralize Communication This is often the single most overlooked strategy a business owner can take: one location for all client communication. There are many platforms on which to do business: emails, texts, phone calls, Facebook Messenger, Instagram DMs, Google My Business, and others. Add to these the employees’ efforts, and it all becomes a logistical nightmare. There are many tools available to streamline your customer communication so that a lead never slips through the cracks.

Prioritize Tech This is a best-for-last situation. In order to effectively accomplish the above items, you will need to adapt and use technology. Automations, calendars, social media management, and centralized communication can all be solved using technology. There are many varieties of software, made available by both local and national companies, that solve it all in one platform. Find ways to simplify your work week and reclaim your time by using technology.

Each one of these suggestions can help you and your business. Challenge yourself to try something new. Don’t worry; you don’t have to do it all at once. Pick one. Implement it. Repeat.

Have You Had Your Fiber Today?

I

t is hard to believe the first interstate copper telephone cable was set up 137 years ago in 1885.

The technology relies on a small amount of electric current to carry the voice from one end of the cable to the other. One copper wire is supplied to send a signal while the other is allocated to receive. This technology has since advanced to include the ability to send digital signals in addition to voice. Like the railroads, copper wire communication networks have been deployed from coast to coast. They have played a large part in the economic and social growth of every country on the globe.

American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) maintained a monopoly of the US communications network until 1984 when the US government forced a breakup and provided an open door for competition. The country was broken up into seven regions. Each region was assigned a Baby Bell or Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) to sell local dial-tone service and maintain the copper network infrastructure. AT&T continued to sell long distance service between the regions and overseas. The breakup also created the opportunity for additional private competition within these regions, and the Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) was born. The number of smaller private providers grew throughout the 1990s, increasing the competition and pushing the development of technology-related business applications.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Worldwide Web—otherwise known as the internet— began to gain popularity. Individuals and corporations could now send messages and limited size documents within minutes versus receiving the same message days later via the US Postal Service. Businesses were able to post full-color advertisements, providing potential customers with much greater amounts of information than the expensive yellow page advertisements on which they had previously relied. Multiplayer video games no longer required traveling to a local arcade. The information age had begun, and the demand for data continues to increase even today.

Carriers and technology industry manufacturers agreed that the deployment of fiber optic cable with capacities 1000-plus-times greater than that of its copper predecessor was the best solution. The installation of fiber optic cable accelerated in the late 1990s and has continued.

Due to the increased demand, many copper networks frequently reached high-level stress points. It was becoming clear the networks would require expensive renovations or complete rebuilds. Carriers and technology industry manufacturers agreed that the deployment of fiber optic cable with capacities 1000-plus-times greater than that of its copper predecessor was the best solution. The installation of fiber optic cable accelerated in the late 1990s and has continued. What began as carrier-to-carrier backbone infrastructure has been extended directly to thousands of multi-tenant commercial buildings, many rural American towns, and even into private family homes.

Due to the great expense of supporting multiple networks and technologies, several of the RBOCs have petitioned the FCC to release them from the liability of maintaining the older copper or Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) networks. The FCC has already approved some requests to pave the way for the newer, faster fiber optic technology. A large number of technicians familiar with the maintenance of the analog (TDM) networks have reached or will soon reach retirement and any continued training is not cost effective. The retirement of the analog copper networks is currently underway.

Only a couple of weeks ago, a bipartisan infrastructure bill was passed through congress providing an estimated 65 billion in federal funding to expand fiber optic broadband access and 5G wireless connectivity into more rural communities. The shift from copper and Continued on Page 52

Continued from Page 51 analog to fiber optic and IP has a much greater reach than just the national communications infrastructure. In March of 2017, Toshiba, which had been manufacturing premise-based business telephone systems for over fifty years, sold the assets to Mitel and dropped out of the market. In December of 2019, Panasonic made a similar announcement to their distribution channels; they will discontinue manufacturing business phone systems in 2022. The reasoning behind these decisions can be tracked to the enormous gap between the limited capabilities of an analog system and the lightning-fast abilities of fiber optic.

The additional network capacity and speed of fiber optic cable opened the door for continued development of business applications. Many of these new capabilities were put on display during the past eighteen months as businesses reconfigured their communications systems from the business park to the cell phones and lap-top computer screens of staff sitting in their living rooms or back-office bedrooms. Restaurants can manage the temperature of their walk-in coolers from an application on their cell phone.

Business owners can monitor the foot traffic in their gas station or retail store through a live video feed anywhere in the world that provides internet access.

Businesses are now converting the traditional emergency analog lines to 4G/5G wireless or an ethernet connection to the network to be transmitted via IP to the monitoring centers. Providing some type of a power failover system is recommended if not already required by the emergency response agencies. These emulation methods will work for currently installed premise-based phone systems as well. The key is to investigate your options and determine if throwing hard-earned revenues towards technology that is actively being decommissioned is the best decision for your business long-term. Understanding where the technology industry is going and why it is going there can be a monumental task, but it may prove vital to the success of your business.

Along with the benefits of fiber optic comes the challenges of retiring the reliability of the analog networks. The largest benefit of the copper analog networks is the low voltage current pushed through the transmission by the carrier. Many times, this provides the ability to communicate even through disastrous events. It was this ability that created the mandate by national fire department regulatory agencies and alarm monitoring centers requiring analog telephone lines for fire alarm panels, elevators, and burglar alarms systems. Many carriers can and will provide what is known as analog emulation to keep these emergency monitoring systems active, but the low voltage current during a power failure is not included.

Solving the Affordable Housing Crisis in Southern Utah

ecause no two people experiencing homelessness have arrived there in the same manner, no one source can provide the pathway to self-sufficiency. The same is true about the housing crisis in southern Utah; no one person or no single organization can or will be the solution. As we say at Switchpoint, “It takes all of us.”

• It takes social service agencies moving beyond their own turfdom and weaving together a support system that fills the gaps through which individuals and families have fallen.

• It takes governmental units identifying the most vulnerable in our communities and prioritizing their housing needs.

• It takes entrepreneurs and millionaires recognizing that they have a moral obligation to reach out and help.

• It takes churches, service organizations, and neighbors stepping up and reaching out to those who need it most.

Our housing crisis impacts every facet of our community, from young families, teachers, and police officers to seniors citizens and veterans. Without a vast and growing web of partnership, the housing crisis will continue to spread unchecked.

Switchpoint never misses an opportunity to invite partnerships; everyone has something to give. Their recent housing project, Riverwalk Village Apartments, is a prime example. The City of St. George donated the land and provided significant funding. The State of Utah awarded federal lowincome tax credits. St. George Housing Authority provided eight subsidies.

Private foundations and churches donated more than $3 million to round out the funding. The net result is a fifty-five unit 1-, 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom apartment complex that serves a wide range of incomes. 172 individuals call it home. Unfortunately, fifty-five units is only a small portion of the 1400 units currently needed.

Jerry moved to St. George from Chicago and never imagined he’d find himself staying at Switchpoint in a homeless shelter. He moved to the area to take a full-time position as a supervisor at Dean Foods. He is not struggling financially. He does not have a criminal record or a substance abuse history.

However, in June 2021, he was given notice that the town home he was leasing had been sold. He had fifteen days to vacate. Because of the current housing crisis, he was unable to secure another rental. Jerry stated, “I’ve had a successful life and career. I’ve had a great life. This is like the lowest low.

Quite frankly, I can hardly look anyone in the eye.”

The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute did a study in 2020 and provided the following highlights: The level of participation in housing issues by the Utah Legislature, cities and counties, the Salt Lake Chamber, nonprofit organizations, and corporations is unprecedented. The convergence of three issues has prompted this engagement: (1) the homeless crisis, (2) the housing shortage, and (3) the housing affordability challenge. These related issues pose near- and long-term threats to the economic well-being of Utah households, individual opportunity, and the state’s economic prosperity. But given the more favorable political and civic environment, the chances of meaningful local land-use revisions to mitigate these threats are the best in years.”

Land Use Regulations Determine the Effectiveness of All Best Practices— Land use regulations control what type of housing gets built, where it gets built, and its affordability. Without accommodative land use regulations, there is little chance a city’s housing policies can influence prices, provide diverse housing types, or meet changes in homebuyers’ preferences. Recently, housing preferences have moved toward multifamily housing (condominiums, twin homes, townhomes, and apartments). From 2000 to 2009, multifamily units accounted for only 27% of all new residential units in Utah, but from 2010 to 2019 the share of multifamily units increased to 44%, and in the last three years, it climbed to nearly 50%. Zoning ordinances, in many cities, do not reflect the shift in preferences to higher density, more affordable housing. Zoning often lags changes in market preferences.”

Leadership and Political Will—Progress on the housing crisis needs continued state and civic leadership. Without it, today’s children, Utah’s next generation, will face an even greater scarcity of affordable housing and more burdensome housing prices.”

Less restrictive zoning is a necessary condition for improved housing affordability and increased housing production. Complementary policies that would enhance less restrictive zoning includes streamlining and standardizing the uncertain and time-consuming approval process and adopting form-based code for selected zones.

Business, civic, government, and organization leaders in southern Utah must embrace innovation. Albert Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

The housing crisis has thwarted far too many well-intended efforts.

Innovation and creativity are key to finding new ways to charge through the present barriers. Old methods won’t work anymore.

For instance, take an innovative opportunity Switchpoint encountered in St. George. After connecting with owners of the Studio 6 motel, Switchpoint asked if they would be willing to sell for the purpose of converting their building to deeply affordable housing units.

When they said yes, Switchpoint partnered with individual donors and government agencies, including the City of St. George, to secure the sale.

Switchpoint created an innovative solution to add fifty-two housing units to the St. George market. In November 2021, Switchpoint opened another converted hotel in Salt Lake City, providing 134 seniors and veterans with deeply affordable permanent housing. By encouraging leading-edge thinking, we opened our organization and the lives of our clients to all sorts of possibilities.

Every organization with a stake in the affordable housing solution should be asking the question, “What if?” No ideas or solutions should be rejected out of hand. No consideration should be given to cost, government regulation, or societal bias during this creative phase. We dream first, and then, we plan. The “what if” question for the business community is this: Can we come together and create 1400 housing units now?

For the future of our children and our community, we must!

That Will Elevate Your Game in 2022

ot that long ago, Raina and I were having a conversation with a respected friend and mentor. We were talking about measuring the worth of someone’s efforts relative to the success of the outcome. He asked us what the outcome would likely be if we chose to dig for gold in our backyard. The answer was obvious.

He then asked if the digger was any less talented or the process any less valid simply because there wasn’t any gold.

The questions went on, but the point was the same. Diligent digging was not the issue; digging in the right place was!

As obvious as this story’s lesson may seem, how often do we dig for gold in our backyards? We work hard. We use multiple marketing platforms, and yet our results are not what we need let alone what we hope they will be.

May we suggest that in many cases, it’s not the person, the product, or the branding, nor is it the marketing platform.

Rather, it is our lack of intentionality in targeting our efforts that limits the outcome. It takes consistent effort, applied with intentionality, to produce the most effective result. Intentionality becomes the key for reaching our ideal clients and accelerating growth.

Raina and I have found that by asking ourselves the following three questions and then intentionally focusing our efforts based on the answers, we can dramatically change both the direction and the growth of our enterprises.

1. W hat does our ideal avatar look like? This one may seem obvious, yet how many of us have really done the deep dive into discovering what “gold” clients look like for us?

2. W here do we find that avatar? Which referral groups have our ideal avatars? What trade associations and social media platforms have the audiences we’re looking for? Identifying those environments opens up additional opportunities for targeted growth.

3. W hat companies are we already doing business with and have the trust of our ideal avatars in a complementary, not competitive, way? Think about this one for a minute. Really stop and contemplate the profound ramifications of this question.

What might happen if we could share client bases with companies that offer complimentary products or services?

We aren’t talking about sharing client lists. We are talking about collaborations which drive additional value to all parties involved. Imagine the possibilities for exponential growth when we now access multiple clients from the same initial speaking engagement or sales meeting! Their hundreds (or even thousands) of clients may now become our clients. The power of collaboration to achieve maximum results from each company’s efforts creates massive expansion opportunities for both!

As you apply these questions to your own business, the possibilities will become endless. Seeing the opportunities for collaboration with like-positioned companies (what we call ecosystem mergers) can be the micro-distinction that propels all ventures to the next level of growth and profitability.

Creating a Brand Strategy That Sets You Apart

ave you thought about your business’s brand lately? Unless you’ve done much work on it recently, it’s worth revisiting.

Your brand is a critical part of your business, especially when it comes to attracting prospective customers and maintaining current clients—which means it’s crucial to get it right. It should resonate with your target audience and, above all else, drive results.

Nail down who you are.

A brand is more than logos and colors. It is the sum of all the experiences that people have with your organization. So, how can you take our brand strategy process and apply it to your own organization? We’re giving you an inside look at how to revamp your brand!

What’s your “why”? When creating an effective brand, you must be able to define why you do what you do. Your “why” statement is the soul of your brand. Once you’ve established your “why,” turn your attention to how to connect with your audience. What features do you offer and what are the emotional benefits? In other words, what pains are you alleviating for them? List these out and focus on the benefits when choosing your marketing messages. Decide on a brand personality that correlates with your benefits. Are you trustworthy? Funny? Knowledgeable? A mix of all three? Choose several personality traits you can employ when writing content and advertising.

Look at your current brand.

Give it a makeover.

You can’t start if you don’t know where you are.

Begin by conducting a brand audit. Go through your existing marketing elements, brand information, and website content. Get your executive team together, and go over your goals for the future.

Discuss who you are in the eyes of your target audiences and your competitors. Conduct focus groups and surveys, and find out what people are saying about you on social media.

Does your logo say what you want it to say about your brand? If not, put together some mood boards to find relevant colors, styles, and ideas to create a company “look and feel.” Pinterest is a great resource for this! If creating a logo is outside of your skill set, look around for talented designers who can bring your vision and brand identity to life. The visual identity you establish should communicate who you are to the personas that you established in the previous steps.

Create customer personas.

Once you’ve gathered all the information you need to begin, analyze what you discovered.

Create three detailed customer personas: your primary audience, your secondary audience, and a tertiary audience. You may have more than three.

The goal is to be specific and narrow in order to minimize spreading your marketing dollars too thin. Dig deep: give them names, personalities, hobbies, beliefs, personal lives, jobs, and families.

Identify their traits, what they like, and how they make buying decisions. Knowing exactly who they are makes it easier to market to them.

Reveal your new look.

The final step in re-imagining your brand is to share it with the world. This can be tricky and needs to be planned carefully. Start by setting goals. Then, sit down and identify the marketing tactics and channels that will help you accomplish them. These could include traditional media, social media, digital ads, newsletters, public relations, and beyond. Prioritize these efforts and accomplish them as budget and bandwidth allow.

The most important thing is to stay consistent in your message and design. This process can be long and arduous, but stick with it, and work through the challenges. Doing so will build strong connections and raving fans.

Tan’s Treats Giving Children the Nutrition They Need to Succeed Tanner Holt was a student at Diamond Valley Elementary School when he noticed that his classmate never had anything to eat for lunch. Gifted with a generous heart, Tanner began secretly giving his own lunch to his hungry friend.

It did not take long for his mother, Diane, to notice that her son came home daily with a ravenous hunger. After some questioning, she discovered Tanner’s secret act of kindness. Impressed by his willingness to share, Diane began sending him with two lunches each day so that both boys could eat.

It was this experience from Tanner’s life that became the inspiration for Tan’s Treats. When Tanner died in a tragic accident at the age of twenty-three, his family struggled to find a way to channel their grief. Already sensitive to the reality of childhood hunger, Diane discovered that children who qualified for reducedprice or free school lunch were going without meals on the weekends when school food programs were not available.

The Holt family stepped in to fill the gap, founding Tan’s Treats in 2016. “It is the perfect gift to a little boy who gave his lunch away,” explained Diane.

Each Thursday afternoon, volunteers gather at the Tan’s Treats warehouse in St. George to fill food sacks destined for hundreds of hungry children attending schools in Washington County. Each food sack contains six meals and two snacks— enough to feed a child for two days. Extra meals are included for long weekends, and long-term sacks are provided for Christmas break and spring recess.

Food sacks are delivered to participating elementary schools each Friday morning for distribution. Deciding who receives the sacks is left to each individual school, with classroom teachers, Title 1 Coordinators, and parents collaborating together to determine need.

hat started with a group of “cypher punks” and the mysterious pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009 has now led to Facebook changing its name to Meta in 2021 and according to some, is about to transform the world we live in ways we can’t even imagine.

Do you really understand what bitcoin is?

The most popular network protocol in the world, TCP/IP protocol suite, was invented in the 1970s by two DARPA scientists, Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, persons most often called the fathers of the internet. Little did they know the magnitude of impact and disruption to the world their invention would cause. The free flow of information enabled innovation at a rate we had never seen in our history. For better or worse, we live in a different world than the world before the internet.

Naysayers were in full force during the invention of the automobile, electricity, the internet, and now bitcoin.

Transformational inventions like these don’t care what people think. Don’t be fooled by the naysayers who know as much about bitcoin as they do about how the internet works. A tsunami is coming, and it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for those who are independent thinkers, innovators, and visionaries.

The next wave of this global transformation is based on a new protocol that enables the free flow of value. The resulting innovation is happening faster than ever. Industries thought to be impenetrable are about to be disrupted and opportunities for global economic growth will raise the standard of living for everyone, especially for underdeveloped countries.

Bitcoin is a poor name for a protocol that enables the free flow of value. Satoshi Nakamoto named it bitcoin when he/she wrote the white paper in 2008, but it speaks nothing to what it really is. This is why digital value can not be transferred without a trusted intermediary to insure fair play. For example, banks are the trusted intermediary for transferring money.

Throughout history, centralized hierarchical systems of trust is all we’ve ever known. This creates a challenge for many to understand bitcoin since we have nothing in our known universe with which to associate it. These ancient systems of trust are bottlenecks to innovation and fertile ground for corruption.

Hierarchical systems of trust can’t scale fast enough to keep up with the current rate of innovation. But this new system removes barriers to scale and is immune to corruption because it’s based on math and consensus.

The most logical first application of this technology is money and thus is born bitcoin and a thousand other crypto currencies that compete to create better frictionless payment rails and money solutions. You’ve probably heard of Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT’s), which are a more recent application of this technology. This new protocol makes the “metaverse” possible by enabling the ownership and transfer of things in the digital world like in the physical world.

At first glance, it is difficult to see the value of such a solution since we don’t have the same challenges as other nations. Money as the first application of this technology has the potential to connect human capital to global markets in a way that could lift the quality of life for the entire world. Thus, other nations have moved quicker to adopt this technology. In fact, there is a real danger to the United States in neglecting to move quicker by providing a clear regulatory framework for which innovators can innovate. Some nations have moved quickly and are being handsomely rewarded for it.

In 1990, If you could have seen what the world looked like in 2022, what would you have done differently? If you haven’t taken the deep dive down the rabbit hole that is bitcoin, maybe now is the time.

Brad Plothow

Chief Growth Officer, Intergalactic Brad Plothow is Chief Growth Officer at Intergalactic, a St. George-based aerospace company that serves the defense aerospace, civil aviation, and commercial space sectors with advanced thermal management solutions. Previously, Brad spent a decade with one foot in Silicon Slopes and the other in Silicon Valley, helping tech companies grow revenue and establish national and global relevance. He holds a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in communications and is a proud alumnus of Pine View High School. He and his wife, Stefanie, have four children and enjoy hiking, skiing, and spinning classic rock on vinyl.

Macrae Heppler

Managing Partner, Eagle Gate Title

Macrae Heppler is a Managing Partner with Eagle Gate Title. He was born and raised in the heart of St. George, Utah, and loves everything about southern Utah. He has a background in sales that led him to want to live a life of entrepreneurship. He helped start Eagle Gate Title St. George in 2015 and has gained experience in all things real estate in his six years in the business. Outside of work, he loves to spend time with his wife and two dogs and is looking forward to becoming a dad this year. He’s a major foodie, loves to see the world, and attends any sporting event he possibly can. One of his favorite things about southern Utah is being able to play golf, ride mountain bikes, and do other outdoor activities year round.

Brock Rasmussen

Co-Founder/CEO, Stele Hats Brock Rasmussen is the co-founder and CEO of Stele Hats. In addition to founding Stele with his wife, Julie, in early 2020, Brock has worked as an entrepreneur in the St. George area for the last fourteen years. He currently owns and operates (with various business partners) Waldo Group, a medical office management company; Crossfit Dixie, a local Crossfit gym; Create Agency, a digital marketing agency; Loopsmart, a smart home installation and dealer for Control4 products; and Alpine Event Co, an event rental company.

He holds a bachelors in economics from BYU and an MBA from Duke University. He and Julie have four boys.

Ashley Dove

Ashley is the Director of Sales and Marketing for The Advenire, Autograph Collection and its four-star, on-site restaurant, wood.ash.rye. Ashley joined this project in 2019 as a key member of the pre-opening leadership team tasked with bringing the auspicious luxury project to life. Ashley is an award-winning former general manager, director of sales, and task force general manager and has also represented southern Utah on various tourism boards and committees. Ashley is a proud southern-Utah-raised girl and Dixie State University alum.

She is passionate about serving the community she holds extremely dear to her heart.
