Zion Surgery Center

Last year, only 2 days after I was made the Director of Nursing, our Administrator came down with Covid and a few weeks later, he passed away. I felt very inadequate to run the center on my own. But despite my insecurities, and with the help of others, I spent the next year learning his job and my new position in order to keep the center running smoothly. It taught me that I am capable of doing more than I thought I was.

Lindsay Tripp Summit So eby’s International Rea y

The growth that I have experienced both personally and professionally since joining Summit Sotheby's International Realty has been life changing. Managing the office in St. George even more so. It has had it challenges, but I wake up grateful to do what I do, with the best people in the business, every day. I've had the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the industry and to help some of the best in the industry grow.

Diana Ca Dinosaur Discovery Center

When I was little my grandparents volunteered at the Brigham City museum and old train depot. I would go with them on occasion and loved learning about the history but mostly playing dress up or playing with the old timey things that were there! Those early experiences are why I love working in a museum and why I love getting to create similar experiences for young students that volunteer with us.

Jake Carlen

Mountain America Credit Union

Starting at the bottom taught me many valuable lessons that further helped me each time I was promoted. I see a lot of young employees who want to be CEO overnight. I can not stress enough how important it is to put in the time, and the work, to learn and master each of your roles on the way up.

St. George News

Working closely with a variety of other skilled writers over the years has been the single greatest contributor to my own growth as an author. Reading and absorbing their material has allowed my work to be richer in turn.

Brock Buckway

Gamma West Cancer Services

The recent Global Pandemic with COVID-19 has stretched healthcare leaders in directions they never thought possible. This experience has shaped me by having so many uncharted trials and hurdles to navigate through it could have easily become overwhelming. But, that experience has really proven that no matter how big an obstacle, or difficult a situation, there is always a way through it. If you simply take it one step at a time.

I have had the fortune of having a few different leaders who have been excellent examples to me on how a successful leader should operate. The lessons I have learned from them have shaped who I am as a leader and how I approach interactions in the workplace. I have learned, sometimes the hard way, that listening and asking questions goes a long way to showing colleagues and customers that you care. Once respect is gained (and maintained), then the ability to be successful in your industry becomes almost automatic.

Dr. Steven Harmon, DO Rocky Vista University

My patients have taught me how to become a doctor in the most rewarding ways. With each patient, comes new expereinces that teach everyone.

Andrew Gubler

Deseret Laboratories Inc.

I had the opportunity to work for a large Fortune 500 company after graduating from college. It was a challenging job but was one that I enjoyed. About a year into the job I made a mistake that came with some large financial implications for the company. Instead of notifying my boss about the situation, I dug deep and worked to resolve the issue by myself.

After a couple of weeks’ worth full of work and stress I was able to rectify my mistake and went to notify my boss of the situation. I was taught the importance of two great traits that day, communication and teamwork. Since that experience, I have tried to make communication and teamwork a key part of each project I work on

A major product recall that occurred after a small product change and shaped me professionally. The circumstance teaches how to adapt quickly to suit the needs of the consumer, as well as teaches you how to learn quickly how keep moving forward.

Level Up Iv LLC

As unfortunate and devastating the pandemic was, it allowed me to see the holes we have in traditional healthcare systems. This created a burning desire that I couldn’t ignore until I came up with a resolution or a way to get into our community and make a change. The start up of Level Up IV has helped hundreds of people and continues to be my reason why.

I worked at a tech startup in St. George that required each new employee to complete "Power Training". If you've lived in Southern Utah long enough, you might have heard of the 2-day workshop. I broke boards with my hand and walked on fire. I remember them telling us, "it's ok to move quickly," and that has stuck with me. This shaped me by helping to direct me to take action. Planning and thought are not discounted, but it is still ok to get the job done.

Learning how to compete professionally. In my first real leadership position I was the youngest person in the company at that role and our position was graded by a scorecard comprising of the 16 most important metrics for the company. It was during this time that I learned how to compete in the arena of business. I was driven everyday to be the best in these 16 categories and that drive and focus lead me to win the award as the top performing leader in the company in back to back years. I was under educated and had little experience but through my competitive instincts, I found a way to be recognized as a top leader in the company. I've kept that competitive spirit throughout my career.

It is not a single experience that has shaped me, rather several. I am shaped by the hard times, by the failures, and by the mistakes I have made or seen others make. I have learned the most from the times when things did not go my way and I had to adapt. Those times when I have stretched out of my comfort zone have been the most impactful.

Tyson leads by example on and off the stage by creating the sets, choreography and acting. Tyson was awarded an ARP grant through Utah Humanities for a locally created and produced musical called MARA, written by his talented mother. Tyson has contributed to the success of the Kayenta Center for the Arts by opening "Shakespeare in the Park" in Santa Clara along with "Simonfest".

Working in the halls of congress taught me to treat everyone genuinely as if theyre your best friend. Someone you might view as your enemy on a policy issue today might be the supporter you need on a different issue tomorrow. Burning bridges is not worth it.

Dr. Eric Drake, OD

Over time I’ve had a similar experience on multiple occasions that has helped shape how I practice. I love being able to sit down with a patient and just talk, Not only about their eyes but life as well. By the end of the exam, having explained all the findings and addressing the patients needs, I usually get a comment about how much they appreciate me, the doctor, taking the time to talk to them, answer questions, and not rush the exam. When I hear that I know I have accomplished my goal as a doctor.

An experience that has shaped me is when one of my friends said that I couldn't run the marathon without training. My friend and I made a little bet and I decided to give it a shot, it was one of the toughest things mentally that I have done. With that challenge, I was able to complete the marathon without training. This challenge helped me realize that we are the ones that put limitations on ourselves. All we have to do is break down those limitations and believe in ourselves and we can accomplish amazing things.

Nate Reidhead

RAM Aviation, Space and Defense

In the first year of my career, a co-worker brought me several components which they believed had been assembled incorrectly. They asked if I could provide instructions and authorization to destructively disassemble the components and start the assembly process over with new parts. I did what they asked without much thought. The parts had been assembled correctly, meaning good parts had gone to waste. While the cost of the parts was minimal, this experience taught me to always seek out as much information as possible in order to make informed decisions. This lesson has benefitted me countless times since, and has helped me avoid costly errors on every project I have been assigned at RAM.

Jordan Rushton

Dixie Technical Co ege

Early in my career, I saw how quickly and dramatically lives could be changed for the better by equipping people with technical skills. shortly after witnessing this, I changed my career path to “tech Ed.” I’ve never looked back and I’m so grateful to play a role in the life changing education taking place at Dixie Technical College!

Early on in my career, I experienced situations where clients could not afford care for their pets. Because of these heartbreaking circumstances, I decided to work in non-profit veterinary medicine to offer affordable care with the goal that all clients and their pets be able to access basic veterinary services.

City of St. George

Marathon running and training has shaped me professionally. When I moved to St. George in 2008, I was inspired to run the St. George Marathon because of how much our community embraced and loved this event. For me, I always look at opportunities to be as successful as I can and I not only wanted to run my first marathon at the St. George Marathon but I wanted to win the entire race. With this goal in mind I strive to find the knowledge of what it took to win a marathon from the best runners in the community and I set up my training plan to do the work required to compete at this level. I ended up winning that first St. George Marathon I ran and this mentality has not only shaped me as an athlete but professionally as well. In my work I always go in with the mentality of looking at exactly what I need to do to be the best and successful then I go after it like no other!

I’ve been shaped professionally by the experience I’ve had opening a new business in my area. I have been able to learn a lot about all aspects of business and how to make your company successful. Through this experience I’ve been able to help many kids in our community build a positive relationship with math.

At one of my past jobs, I had to be creative in how I did my work. There wasn’t enough work to keep me busy all day. I learned that I needed to read and teach myself to improve in my job so that A) I could create a need and B) I could better myself and be paid to do it. Because of this, when I left, my job was split into three jobs and, to this day, is something that could never be replicated by another person. It taught me to be unique and approach each job with my own style.
