From the Editor The holidays are fast approaching and that means cooler temperatures, family gatherings, amazing food, and lots of shopping. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, no matter how crazy it gets. And even though we tend to run from one event to the next, it still feels a little slower...It feels like the world gets smaller for just a moment.

This holiday season, we’ll all be making our lists of family, friends, and neighbor gifts. If you’re like me, gift giving is a central way of showing appreciation. In our home, we always like to find local goodies that we can share with our neighbors around the holidays. It gives us a way to connect, to say thank you, and to support our amazing local businesses.

We’ve spent the last eighteen months navigating a global pandemic. In a conservative estimate, the Wall Street Journal reported the closure of over 200,000 businesses, many of which were small businesses—mom and pop shops. This holiday season, you can bet we’ll be continuing that tradition. While mainstream media tells us that the global supply chain will create scarcity in stores this holiday season, I invite you to shop at a local St. George Area Chamber of Commerce business. Purchase a gift card to a local restaurant. Buy a mug made by a local artisan. Share local chocolates, popcorn, or honey with your neighbors.

We appreciate the economic impact of all of our businesses in southern Utah. This year, we once again want to shine a spotlight on our small, local businesses. When we shop local, our world tends to get a little smaller, and life seems to slow down for a moment.

ST. GEORGE BUSINESS SUMMIT

Washington County Is the Place to Watch

By Don Willie, President and CEO of the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce

T

he 2021 RISE St. George Business Summit, presented by Intergalactic and RAM Company, was unlike anything we’ve seen in Washington County—a star-studded lineup filled with worldclass entrepreneurs, thought leaders, brand experts, sales coaches, executives, and more. If you missed out on this annual summit, attended by over 500 business leaders from the St. George Area and across Utah, you’re going to want to spend the next couple of pages with me as I share some highlights and key takeaways from the day.

Washington County is rapidly growing, but the data paints an even more exciting picture than we realized. We kicked off RISE 2021 with “Utah’s top economist,” Natalie Gochnour, who is widely respected across the state as THE go-to source for economic data and analysis. Washington County is the place to watch in Utah. We’re growing at an explosive rate (two times the state growth rate). We’re experiencing full employment (2.6 percent unemployment in Washington County versus 2.7 percent in the state of Utah and 5.9 percent nationally). Migration into Washington County isn’t slowing down anytime soon (30.5 percent growth over the last decade, the second fastest growing county in Utah).

While our economy is strong, businesses can’t find workers, and we’re faced with a scarcity of natural resources that could constrain our future growth. Gochnour pointed out five touchstones to consider as we look to the future: 1. Growth is our constant companion.

2. Change requires a sense of urgency.

3. Opportunity continues to knock.

4. Understand the sense of loss.

5. A leadership imperative calls for a clear, compelling, and shared vision.

Entrepreneurs Brad Bonham, Carine Clark, and Steve Neeleman shared their entrepreneurial journeys from startup to exit and everywhere in between. Bonham fell into business by being in the right place at the right time and taking a big risk that paid off. After making some pretty significant pivots, he transformed a furniture business into one of Utah’s most successful drop-ship furniture companies. He encouraged entrepreneurs to (1) go with the flow by being willing to pivot smart, (2) prove your concept before rushing to market, and (3) refuse to let size constrain your decisions.

Colliers International-Utah is regarded as the largest commercial real estate firm in Utah and is involved in many of the state’s most transformative commercial real estate projects. Brandon Fugal, Chairman of Colliers InternationalUtah, spoke about the boom of commercial real estate in southern Utah with developments like Tech Ridge and Desert Color. The commercial market in Washington County is tight, with a 1.5 percent commercial office vacancy rate and 114,000 square feet under construction. Industrial space is even tighter, with less than 1 percent vacancy of the nearly 11,000,000 square feet of existing or in progress space in Washington County. Fugal took the final few moments of his presentation to share what is happening at his most extraterrestrial piece of property, Skinwalker Ranch in Uintah County.

Local entrepreneurs Sherri Staheli Tate and Nicole Tanner excited those in attendance with their passionate stories of building their businesses in Washington County. Staheli Family Farms is a staple in our community but is shrinking as demand for residential and commercial real estate increases. To preserve the farm and to educate others on the value and importance of agriculture, Sherrie has pioneered agrotourism in the state of Utah and is succeeding!

Nicole Tanner founded SWIG in St. George, Utah, and is the originator of the “dirty” soda. In 2017, SWIG was acquired

by Utah-based Four Food Groups and has continued to expand regionally and into the Midwest. Nicole shared her authenticity with those in attendance, inspiring entrepreneurs to pursue their ideas, no matter how small or how unachievable they may seem. Who would have thought that the frustration of one customer wanting a quick soda would result in a nearly thirty-store soda empire?

Founder and CEO of Lovesac, Shawn Nelson, along with HireVue co-founder Ryan Money, took the stage to talk about life as entrepreneurs. While it can seem glamorous at times, starting and running a company can exhaust your time, energy, and resources. Learning how to balance work, family, and fun can be a struggle. There will be ups and downs in work and family. Balancing the two, while difficult, is possible.

David Viveros is the man who brought the LPGA Symetra Tour to Copper Rock Golf Club, and he’s not done. Viveros highlighted that southern Utah is primed for explosive growth

in the sports economy. Already home to the IRONMAN world championships, St. George Marathon, and Redbull Rampage, southern Utah has the makings for much more. Is it time to start the Southern Utah Sports Commission?

Over lunch, attendees heard from a power-packed panel of local business leaders, including panelists Chip Childs, CEO of Skywest; Clint Reid, CEO of Zonos; Jennifer Janke, CMO of Vasion; Issac Barlow, CEO of BusyBusy and managing partner of Tech Ridge; Macrae Heppler, managing partner at Eagle Gate Title-St. George; Amber Williams, Director of Finance at Desert Color; and Brian McCann, CEO of Intergalactic, who moderated the conversation. This impressive panel discussed important topics like water availability, economic opportunity, community branding, workforce, and much more.

We rounded out the day with a series of masterclasses (breakout sessions where critical business practices are applied). Topics included branding, sales, social media, workplace diversity, customer service, protecting your business, and taking your business global.

In addition to the day’s impressive presenters, we enjoyed connecting with over thirty business service providers.

Business leaders were able to connect with funding resources, software to increase efficiency, branding and marketing companies to help increase exposure, and much more—tools to help businesses thrive in our growing community.

Just as a rising tide lifts all boats, the rising St. George area economy is lifting businesses. But those businesses need tools, resources, examples, and mentoring to grow with the economy around them. RISE 2021 did just that. This impressive one-day summit inspired, taught, empowered, connected, and armed entrepreneurs with the tools and resources they need to succeed. at Soft Cell Biological Research

T

he Law of Unintended Consequences works relentlessly and unpredictably. In the case of Soft Cell Biological Research (SCBR), it has resulted in a smoothly functioning biotech company whose unintended profile sends a strong and positive signal to young women contemplating careers in the biomedical sciences.

I see SCBR as a unique research lab that puts an emphasis on teaching opportunities, which is atypical for a majority of research institutions. –Kennedy Roché, Soft Cell scientist.

SCBR was founded in 2014 by J. Brent Hunt of St. George, Utah, whose struggles with continually failing knee and shoulder replacements drove him to return to Dixie State University, where he had been a pre-med student three decades earlier, and to initiate a conversation with legendary DSU professor Andrew Barnum. Dr. Barnum, who had taught Brent microbiology, consented to work with Brent to try to determine the cause of his medical issues and allowed him the use of laboratory space in the biology building.

Desperate to determine the cause of his unremitting pain and inflammation, Brent began to read J. Brent Hunt, Founder (R), Dr. Gregory A. deeply into the medical literature Prince, CEO (L) and learned of “dark bacteria” that first had been described in 1935. These are bacteria of many species that can, under some conditions, shed their cell walls and live invisibly in the blood.

Thousands of subsequent papers described these microorganisms, but because they eluded laboratory culture, no one knew if they had any role in human health. Through years of trial and error at the laboratory bench, Brent developed protocols that began to culture them and suggest that they may be important actors in many chronic diseases.

SCBR created a subsidiary company, Soft Cell Labs (SCL), to do commercial testing of blood in the hope of developing treatment options for patients suffering complex and intractable chronic diseases, for which Brent directed the buildout of a 13,000-square-foot commercial laboratory in St. George. Shortly before the buildout was completed, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and SCL pivoted to become a regional COVID-19 testing center. Only three weeks after testing began, Brent died tragically and unexpectedly, leaving leadership of both companies to Dr. Gregory Prince, with whom Brent had worked since shortly after SCBR was founded. Dr. Prince assumed the CEO duties without compensation to preserve company resources.

As the demand for COVID-19 testing skyrocketed, all personnel were pulled into SCL, and SCBR was effectively mothballed. Then, in the spring of 2021, as the first wave of vaccinations brought caseloads down, SCBR began to reemerge and resume its original mission: to do basic research on dark bacteria that could lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases.

In the process of reopening the research laboratory, which resides on the DSU campus, there was a re-sorting of the companies’ rosters along with new hires. When the rosters were finalized, it occurred to Dr. Prince that SCBR had an unusual profile. “We never had an intention of it happening, but one day, I realized that all of our salaried employees are women.” Indeed, here are the STEM women who make SCBR function successfully: Continued on Page 10

Sherra Carter, Director of Human Resources. A native of Luna, New Mexico, Sherra graduated from Eastern Arizona College.

In addition to these employees, SCBR trains a steady stream of biology interns from DSU, with the large majority of them being women. “I see SCBR as a unique research lab that puts an emphasis on teaching opportunities, which is atypical for a majority of research institutions,” said Kennedy Roché, Soft Cell scientist. “Here at SCBR, all levels of academic achievement are represented, valued, and respected. The beginning of SCBR relied heavily on university students as a foundation for research fulfillment, and that is something we continue to nurture.”

Dr. Debra DeLoach, Director of Research, whose career has transcended the gradual change in representation of women in science, noted, “Over the last three decades, the number of women receiving degrees in STEM has increased, but when you look at the proportion that go on to leadership positions, the numbers remain low.

In the university setting, over 75 percent of full professorships are fulfilled by men. This trend persists in pharmaceutical and medical fields as well, where less than 17 percent of senior management positions are held by women.

“As heartened as I am that we are encouraging more young women to enter STEM fields, I also find it troubling that there is still a glass ceiling when it comes to career advancement. I believe our company challenges that schema,” continued Dr. DeLoach. “We have many brilliant female scientists that are not only talented but are excellent role-models for the next generation of young women, and I am hopeful that our company is exemplary for shifting the leadership paradigm.”

Dr. Gregory A. Prince is CEO of Soft Cell Biological Research, a St. George, Utah, biotech company focused on chronic diseases linked to “dark bacteria.”

He spent four decades in virus research, co-founding Virion Systems, Inc., serving as its CEO, and pioneering the standard of care for preventing RSV pneumonia in high-risk infants, Synagis®. He received doctoral degrees from UCLA (DDS, 1973; PhD, Pathology, 1975) and spent fifteen years at the National Institutes of Health prior to going into the biotech business. He has published over 150 scientific papers.

Several years ago, I was stagnant in my career and felt I was not progressing. Earlier in my life, I had set very specific time frame goals for where I wanted to be, and I wasn’t quite there. I decided to start applying for the job I wanted instead of the job I needed. I applied for more than 300 general manager positions and barely heard a word from any of them. Feeling discouraged, I applied for one more, and that was for a hotel in St. George, Utah.

A recent project included working with teens in foster care and the juvenile justice system. I facilitated a drama therapy process where students created poems, monologues, and dance pieces that expressed what it feels like to be a child “in the system.” When the teens performed their creations and told their stories for the community, both the performers and community members were connected and deeply moved. Watching clients find power in their vulnerability is life-changing.

When I first started in my career, I thought I had to do everything. I served on every board that asked. I volunteered for everything; I never said no. Finding the purpose or core motivation behind why I get involved helps ensure that my time and talents are used in ways that are the most helpful.

What experience has shaped you professionally?

About one month after the birth of our first child, I woke up at 2:00 a.m. and realized that if I didn’t go out and create income, we would not make a penny that month. That was scary. I had quit my full-time job to start building a company that was dissolved when the partners got in a fight, and I really had nowhere to go. At that moment, I had to make the decision to fold or make it happen. I said prayers, and asked what to do. That morning, I had several ideas, and one of them gave me some quick wins and sales. From there, I knew I could make this business thing work as long as I worked hard and tried to continually get inspiration from God.

I was fortunate to spend my first two years out of law school working for two federal judges.

They taught me to enjoy the practice of law.

They were kind and supportive even though I was a young lawyer in over my head. Their mentorship instilled confidence in me and a desire to anxiously engage in public service.

We had invested a substantial amount of cash into a project and started demolition on a building based on a verbal commitment by our lender of over twenty years. Why do you do what you do?

I enjoy uniting people through laughter. I love meeting guests at shows and giving talent the opportunity to perform in Greater Zion. For many, it’s their first time ever performing, first time ever getting paid, or first gig on the road. It’s a privilege to be able to provide a quality opportunity and additional venue for the international stand-up comedy community.

When I first started producing shows, I was hyphy: high strung and hyper all the time. Now that I’ve established Electric Comedy producing close to fifty shows, I approach the production with more polish and awareness. Since our first show to now, we’ve grown to attract more hilarious comics, become a destination for comedy, and incorporate guest feedback to continually polish the electric production.

During the pursuit of my vision to create Cheesecake Culture, I endured many challenges that seemed insurmountable at the time. After many months, I came to the realization that if I pushed through those challenges with a firm resolve to find a solution, somehow, right on the edge of defeat, a way would be provided. What experience has shaped you professionally?

I‘ve been lucky enough to have a couple of amazing female mentors. Both of these women are powerful leaders who are balancing demanding jobs and the responsibilities of motherhood while carving out time to have weekly calls with me. We talk about the pressures of being a working mother, what it’s like being the only woman in meetings, overcoming imposter syndrome, and how I can be a mentor and ally for other women.

Their mentorship has taught me how to speak up in that room full of men and silence my nagging imposter syndrome and that you’re never too busy or important to listen and share experiences with others.

How European Data Privacy Law May Impact Your Business in Southern Utah

Let’s say you own a very cool dude ranch in the wilderness of southern Utah. Without question, your best source for customers are Europeans; you know how much they love a wild west experience.

Amid the COVID crisis, your customers from the old country are not so plentiful. However, you still want to engage that market, so you locate a database of your visitors stretching back ten years and send them electronic brochures and updates via email. Maybe you start a blog, targeting your best potential customers in the EU. In turn, they respond by the thousands.They love your website and follow your blog. You are all ready to go as soon as the travel restrictions subside!

And then you get a letter from the European Data-Board informing you that you are in violation of the GDPR (General Data Privacy Regulation of the EU), and you could potentially be fined ten million dollars or 2 percent of your total world-wide revenue, whichever is greater, for illegally storing and processing personal information (a mere name, mailing or street address, email address, or phone number) of EU citizens within the EU states. You are in trouble for not being “GDPR compliant,” which, of all the things to worry about as a business person, is not at the top of your list. So what is going on in the EU that can impact your southern Utah business so directly?

Let’s turn the clock back to 2015. (Yes, it is hard to remember anything prior to 2020, so here’s a reminder of what was happening in the world of data privacy way back then.)

The European Union has been regulating the transfer of its citizens’ data for decades.

To inhibit efforts to get around EU data privacy laws by transferring personal data out of the EU, the European Commission established rules for international data transfers. For transfers to be legal, the data must be afforded the same level of protection guaranteed in the EU. In 2000, the European Commission determined that the United States data privacy principles were sufficient. This “Safe Harbor” decision allowed personal data to flow from the EU to the US. Along came Edward Snowden. Remember him? Snowden was a cyber intelligence consultant who leaked classified information that suggested US intelligence agencies could access individuals’ personal data stored in the US. While Americans disputed whether Snowden was a traitor or a hero, a different dispute began in Europe. There was a big international legal wrangle over safe transfer of personal information from the EU to the US, and the Safe Harbor decision was struck down.

In Utah, the response was mixed. Some organizations joined what was known as the EU-US Privacy Shield, which allowed companies to transfer data from the EU to the US under certain conditions. Some took the ostrich approach and pretended nothing had happened. Others used alternate methods—adopting what is called Binding Corporate Rules or implementing what is known as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCC)—to meet Continued on Page 28

EU data transfer requirements. After an initial flurry of compliance activity, most Utah companies went back to business as usual until the next round of compliance erupted in 2018 when the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force, prompting businesses to update their privacy notices.

On June 4, 2021, the European Commission published new SCCs, providing a new mechanism for transferring EU personal data in line with the GDPR. If your organization processes EU personal data, you need to understand and implement the new Standard Contractual Clauses.

The GDPR permits certain contractual clauses ensuring appropriate data protection safeguards to be used as a ground for data transfers from the EU to third countries. SCCs are essentially binding contracts governing data transfers that have been pre-approved by the European Commission. The new SCCs replace the previous versions, which can no longer be used for new agreements.

The new SCCs must be incorporated into existing agreements by the end of 2022.

The new SCCs establish measures that adequately protect personal data. Parties must guarantee that the data importer (i.e. your Utah-based small business) can fulfill its SCC obligations under the country’s laws where the importation occurs. There are many additional measures that must be met.

Many other countries, like China, Brazil, and others, have similar or very complex rules for transferring, processing, using, or keeping the personal information of their citizens. It is important to be aware of the information privacy rules as they emerge in this rapidly changing business environment in southern Utah, especially as we migrate to a much more comprehensive technology community.

Utah companies, especially those with distributors or multi-level selling organizations, or any companies with a significant EU or other non-US consumer customer base or EU employees, should be very careful to understand and abide by these laws.

Utah Bands Together to Address Supply Chain Challenges

s you drive by empty car lots or notice bare shelves at the grocery store, it’s clear to see that there are issues affecting our global supply chains. It’s been described as a “perfect storm” of forces, which have driven up shipping costs, created logistical logjams around the world, and threatened our collective economic recovery.

Interrupted supply chains are leading to unavailability of goods, price inflation, and job losses as costs for raw materials and finished goods rise and consistency of supply is lost. Many Utah companies have been greatly impacted by these shipping and logistical issues as well as cost increases that amount to prices that are three or four times higher than they were before the pandemic.

The challenges are significant, but Utah companies are taking action together. Because the shipping delays have a number of causes, broad solutions are not obvious.

The business community understands that building out more infrastructure and equipment, such as containers and carrier vessels, and training the necessary work force will take time. However, this doesn’t mean improvements can’t be made in the near term.

While infrastructure investment and policy adjustment, namely refining Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) authority, are important, these are longer-term solutions. In the short to medium-term, market forces appear poised to further drive pricing and service levels in ways that place companies and consumers in increasingly difficult positions. However, there

In this vein, World Trade Center Utah (WTC) and others, including the Salt Lake Chamber and the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA), have been assembling case studies, including written narratives and shipping data, to be delivered

Together with UIPA, the private sector is looking to establish an export-import alliance that will allow Utah companies to leverage improved infrastructure and collective bargaining to optimize the supply chain going forward. While the issues are global in nature, Utah is focused on the areas where we can make a tangible difference.

The local economic impact of home building moves through every sector of the community, providing a rippling effect of benefits that include:

Attainable housing is adequate, affordable housing for all ages and income levels. This impacts our children and

Through public-private partnerships and the support of all stakeholders working together as a community, we can find solutions for problems facing our families today.

One huge aspect of the attainable housing challenge is the lack of highpaying jobs in Washington County. We need to support economic plans that not only encourage existing businesses to expand but also attract new businesses that will provide wages to meet increasing housing costs. Housing prices are based on supply and demand.

Many costs cannot be controlled. It is vital we attract businesses to our area that are willing to pay above-average wages. The St. George area is now on the map, and many people desire to live here. Let’s support a strong economic development plan that will attract highpaying jobs.

One housing idea that could be explored and utilized as a solution to the area’s attainable housing shortage would be “missing middle housing.”

Missing middle housing is a range of house-scale buildings with multiple units that includes duplexes, fourplexes, cottage courts, and multiplexes. These housing units are compatible in scale and form with detached single-family homes, allowing density to be crafted on a scale that blends into existing neighborhoods.

As another part of the attainable housing solution, SUHBA has partnered with the Housing Action Coalition (HAC), a group of community and municipal stakeholders working collaboratively to create more attainable housing for Washington County residents. SUHBA recently designated financial resources to support a project currently underway to validate opportunities through construction and financing innovation.

A new home is currently under construction by high school students and will be featured in the 2022 St. George Area Parade of Homes. It is important that the members of the community recognize these nonprofit agencies and demonstrate their support so that these programs can continue to provide families with affordable housing.

SUHBA representatives also work with cities to adapt zoning requirements to support more affordable housing. This collaborative effort was exemplified when the City of St. George revised their Title 10 Zoning Regulations to allow accessory dwelling units (ADUs), providing more available housing and a revenue stream for existing homeowners.

Additionally, changes to zoning requirements to allow for higher density construction are bringing housing costs down and supplying more available housing.

SUHBA supports the new Career and Technical Education (CTE) High School being built in Washington County. Not only will students graduate with diplomas, they will also receive industry standard certificates to give them a leg up on their careers. Along with construction programs at Dixie Technical College, these programs are addressing the labor shortage in the construction industry. In the last five years, SUHBA has donated over $50,000 to Dixie Technical College to develop and expand construction courses.

Nonprofit organizations in the southern Utah area are also working to provide affordable housing. Over many years, SUHBA has been a strong supporter of Habitat for Humanity.

SUHBA also partners with the Washington County School District to support their construction program. Students have built homes—sold to school district employees—that have been featured in the St. George Area Parade of Homes. This program has grown significantly in the past three years, and

Mari Krashowetz, Executive Officer for the Southern Utah Home Builders Association (SUHBA), has been employed by SUHBA for 21 years. SUHBA is a trade association representing 670 home building industry-related businesses in Washington County, Utah. She oversees the daily SUHBA operations, coordinates the annual St. George Area Parade of Homes, manages the education program, directs the Southern Utah Home Builders Care Foundation, and handles the Government Affairs program to help keep housing a priority in our area. In 2017, the St. George Area Parade of Homes received an award as the Best Parade of Homes in the Nation (National Association of Home Builders) and in 2020 and 2021, they received the Best of Southern Utah Annual Event award.

Mari is currently serving on the Dixie Technical College Board of Directors, the St. George Area Economic Development Council, and the Washington County Housing Attainability Committee.

She is married to Tony Krashowetz, and together they have eleven children (including a set of triplets) and six grandchildren.

Steribin team members made several trips to LAX to support the airport in its desire and efforts to provide sanitary bins for travelers passing through airport security checks.

The pilot program was successful! The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), headquartered in Washington, D.C., is currently conducting further study on the efficacy of ultraviolet pulsed light before proceeding with this technology. After nearly two years of working with the TSA to prove the effectiveness of ultraviolet light and the ability of Steribin’s devices, TSA representatives have stated that they expect to begin reviewing equipment proposals late this year.

Peace of Mind at the Speed of Light

I

n 2018, when Wayne Provost and Bill Christensen first read a study published in Today magazine that stated plastic security trays were more than eighteen times more contaminated than the toilets in airport bathrooms, they set out to find a solution. Their resolve increased after they read a study in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Infectious Disease, made public well before the COVID-19 global pandemic, that found airport security bins “appeared to pose the highest potential risk” to passengers.

Researchers also concluded that airports were at risk of an “emerging pandemic threat.”

With various other studies showing the bins contained harmful bacteria and viruses and a threat of making passengers sick, the pair began working to develop a device that would disinfect the contaminated bins by using ultraviolet light. Joined by Jon Cole, current CEO, and Robert Mitchell, general counsel, they founded Steribin, a startup company based in St. George, Utah.

Steribin worked for months to develop, test, and create a device that would be fast and effective at disinfecting security bins. By using high-intensity ultraviolet light, Steribin’s device can disinfect the bins in a matter of seconds without the use of harmful chemicals.

In early 2020, just as the name COVID-19 was being announced in the U.S. for the first time, Steribin completed its first prototype. Then, as COVID-19 came into full swing, the City of St. George contacted Steribin and asked if their device could be used to disinfect masks and other personal protective equipment for the city employees and first responders.

Steribin built a mobile workstation inside an enclosed trailer and donated its time to support the city while Steribin continued its development.

After months of continuing development and progress, Steribin was invited to operate its device at the Los Angeles International Airport

Over the last three years, Steribin has gained an in-depth knowledge about effective disinfection. As they wait for TSA approval for airport applications, Steribin has begun working aggressively in other industries where it could apply its technology and expertise. They turned their attention to the food industry and have since developed other devices to disinfect food items prior to packaging. Ultraviolet light can kill E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella, and other harmful contaminants found in food, thus reducing the risk of illness or harm to consumers.

Steribin is quickly gaining a reputation for being able to solve tough disinfection challenges. In fact, other large companies have contacted Steribin, wondering how a small southern Utah-based startup is accomplishing what others have not been able to do. As Steribin’s slogan states, they are working to provide “peace of mind at the speed of light.”

Jon Cole is a local entrepreneur with over twenty years of experience in company leadership and management. Cole is active in the local business community as an investor and as a volunteer business mentor at the Atwood Innovation Plaza. Cole has served as an advisor to multiple companies and also serves on the National Advisory Council at Dixie State University.

The Secret of HighPerforming Organizations

inding and retaining talent is often cited as a significant challenge for businesses in southern Utah. In a recent study of our local businesses, 45 percent of respondents agreed that “finding and retaining talent” negatively impacted their business in 2021. According to a 2019 Gallup poll, employee turnover was approaching 27 percent per year, costing U.S. business owners one trillion dollars annually.

As I engage with business owners throughout the country, a few related questions often quickly bubble to the surface. Where can I find the right people? How do I motivate them? What can I do to create a culture for them to succeed?

To truly unleash the intrinsic motivation of your employees, you must first reach them at a personal level and understand what inspires them.

So what is the secret? After engaging with some of the best and worst organizations, here are two secrets I have discovered to find and retain talented employees.

Alignment High-performing organizations understand the power of alignment (when job functions complement core competencies). A great example of alignment comes from the “first who, then what” metaphor popularized by Jim Collins in his book Good to Great. Collins’s research found that high-performing organizations prioritized finding the best talent and properly placing that talent in the right positions above the direction of the business. This organizational alignment, however, is just the tip of the iceberg. Alignment impacts performance on an individual level as well. To illustrate, Bain and Company recently completed a study contrasting the productivity of employees who were classified as being either satisfied, engaged, or inspired in the workplace. Here were the results:

• Satisfied employees were 40 percent more productive than non-satisfied employees.

• Engaged employees were 44 percent more productive than their satisfied peers.

• How are you doing (personally, professionally, in your family, etc.)?

• Inspired employees were 125 percent more productive than their satisfied peers.

• What is going well for you in this role?

Inspired employees are aligned employees. It is very empowering to engage in a role or pursuit that complements our core competencies. Not only do we become more productive, we unlock an intrinsic motivation that fuels deep levels of fulfillment and growth. How, then, can we create high levels of alignment with our employees? For me, it starts with the interview.

• Are we still on track with your long-range goals? Do we need to make any adjustments?

One of the first questions I ask a new candidate in an interview is, “How would you describe your ideal career in five years from today?” The answer to this simple question is packed with important information. First, do they have a plan? If not, perhaps they lack motivation and direction.

Next, does their five-year plan align with the job they are seeking? If not, there is a good chance they are looking for a short-term role. Motivation without career alignment is almost always futile. I would rather have six to twelve months of a highperforming and intrinsically motivated employee than two or even three years of a partially engaged and misaligned employee.

Empathy Establishing an aligned organization will certainly get you on the path to success. Sustained alignment, however, requires more than strategy; it requires empathy. To truly unleash the intrinsic motivation of your employees, you must first reach them at a personal level and understand what inspires them. No paycheck or incentive can save an employee who feels conflicted or misaligned with the role they fill.

• What could be improved?

• How can I support you to _________ (reach quota, clarify path, seek promotion, etc.)?

These questions will always get to the core of an issue faster than a spreadsheet or graph or their performance fluctuations. Instead of focusing on performance or metrics, start with empathy to check alignment before questioning loyalty or ability! After all, we likely didn’t hire them because they weren’t qualified!

Employees want to be seen and recognized.

They want to be understood and valued for their strengths and contributions. They want to be mentored and inspired to reach higher levels of performance. They want to discover and realize their potential. As they discover and align with their potential, motivation and performance will follow.

As employers, it is our unique opportunity to create an environment where employees can thrive. Inspired employees become productive employees who fuel the growth of our businesses.

he 2020 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report showed that women have surpassed men in the workforce in the United States at 50.04%, and Washington County is no exception to that data. The portrait of the working woman encompasses single and married women with and without children; each one is striving to surpass previous levels of excellence in all occupations and in any and all positions, especially positions that were once considered a job only a man could do.

The modern-day working woman is extraordinary in her own right. Hard-working and goal-oriented, women play pivotal roles in our community and are found in every segment of the workforce, including the healthcare, legal, education, hospitality, construction, and sales industries. If you couple these statistics with the fact that in multiple surveys, women are the major influencers of large purchase decisions for the household, the term “work-life balance” takes on a whole new meaning for working females.

Recently, LeanIn.org and KcKinsey & Company released their annual report. During the course of their research, they surveyed more than 400 companies and more than 65,000 employees in professional jobs from the entry to the corporate level. The results found that, despite the tremendous stress placed on them during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing struggles for both gender and race equality in the workplace, at all levels, women were more effective leaders, encouraged fellow employees to excel, and supported diversity, equity, and inclusion.

According to the report, women managers were more invested in helping employees navigate work-life challenges and ensuring workloads were manageable, both of which are necessary for the operation of a successful business.

Other research suggests that women are endowed with strong communication and networking skills. They listen carefully, readily share their ideas, and give advice to encourage teamwork and collaboration, all while maintaining their professionalism.

The proverbial “glass ceiling” is in the process of being shattered with proof at the highest level: a woman is currently holding the United States Vice Presidency position. Additionally, there are more female CEOs, CFOs, and COOs than ever before.

While many business owners found themselves in pivotal positions during 2020, the new owner of Stapley Pharmacy and Compounding, Jana Stapley, had been pivoting since the untimely death of her husband, Brad Stapley, in February 2019. That pivot included surrounding herself with people who could assist her transition from homemaker to CEO almost overnight. The learning curve was steep and fraught with bumps and bruises. As she came to grips emotionally with the loss of her husband and helped her family learn to cope, she was also the guiding light for over sixty staff members who needed to recover from the loss and subsequent grief of their boss.

Zonos Raises $69 Million in Southern Utah’s Largest Series A Investment

n top of a mesa in St. George, Utah, with breathtaking red rock views lies Tech Ridge, a generational redevelopment project that’s attracting new and expanding technology companies to Washington County—companies like Zonos, a Utahgrown SaaS company founded by CEO Clint Reid, that makes calculating the shipping costs and fees of international transactions accurate and painless.

On September 15, 2021, Zonos announced a Series A $69 million investment led by Silversmith Capital Partners, a growth equity firm based in Boston. Also participating in the round were individual investors Eric Rea, co-founder and CEO of Podium, and Aaron Skonnard, co-founder and CEO of Pluralsight.

Todd MacLean, managing partner at Silversmith Capital Partners, who joined the Zonos board of directors through the investment process, highlighted that Zonos is disrupting the global trade industry far away from any port and outside Silicon Valley.

What made Zonos so impressive to outside investors was that Zonos was restoring confidence in international trade.

Zonos provides APIs, apps, and plugins to streamline crossborder sales, enabling companies to deliver accurate final prices to consumers who are making international purchases.

Additionally, businesses can choose one or multiple shipping carriers, and they can give their customers this option at the time of purchase. “If you are transparent, you bring trust,” said Reid. “This was traditionally thought to be a shipping problem, but it’s really a technology problem.”

Over a Decade of Bootstrapping Zonos has been a rising star in global trade for over a decade.

The company was established as iGlobal in 2009 by Reid, who prior had been an international account executive at a worldwide shipping company. Reid regularly witnessed the frustration of global merchants who found the overly complicated process of filing paperwork and figuring out taxes to be both complex and expensive. Knowing there had to be a better way, Reid left his job to find it. His goal has always been to build the best and most accurate cross-border technology solution possible.

From the first order, placed from Tokyo, Japan, in September 2009, to the recent investment by Silversmith, Reid has made decisions that facilitated growth and built trust in the Zonos products, including pivoting to become a technologyfocused company in 2013 and moving the headquarters from Salt Lake City to St. George, Utah, in 2014. He did this all without taking a dime of outside investment.

Reid has always been a strong believer that businesses should bootstrap for as long as they can. While some companies can bootstrap forever, for others, it’s a much shorter journey.

Zonos was able to bootstrap for twelve years, but with the rapid growth of the company, Reid knew the timing was right.

Reid vowed that if Zonos ever raised money, the funding would only come from a partner that shared his long-term vision. “I have never been dogmatic about bootstrapping but do admire companies that are able to bootstrap for a long time,” he explained. “I also admire companies that raise money early and build something incredible.”

Zonos was able to bootstrap for over a decade. They were able to write their own story, make vital pivots, and move their company to St. George. But the company eventually reached the point where it needed to move faster to accommodate the rapid acceleration of global trade.

A Dynamic Global Economy and Explosive Growth Invited Investment In recent years, regulations, Brexit, USMCA, and low-value tax laws have accelerated the growth of international commerce, but Zonos has been agile in its response. Since March of 2020, Zonos’ profitably tripled the size of their team, taking them from thirty-four to over one hundred employees to respond to the burgeoning cross-border ecommerce world. Even with the growing team, they needed to expand product development, worldwide team expansion, and go-to-market opportunities.

In 2020, while visiting northern Utah, Reid had a conversation with Eric Rea, CEO of Podium. Rea asked Reid what he thought Zonos was worth. When Reid threw a number out, Rea said, “It is worth twice that amount.” Rea then asked his CFO, who also agreed that the company was worth double.

“If you’re bootstrapping your company, you typically don’t have those contacts,” he said. Reid admits that if he hadn’t taken the initiative to cold email several tech CEOs, he may have taken the first offer, and Allred’s tweet would never have been sent. Zonos received eight offers.

Reid then called Austen Allred, CEO of Lambda School, for advice, and Allred said, “Let me send out a tweet.” Before long, Reid’s inbox was blowing up, and his executive assistant called Reid and asked, “What did you do?”

“There is power in going long when you know you have something special and can find a way to stick it out,” noted Reid. “Zonos had several offers to choose from, but Silversmith Capital Partners believed in my vision and the company’s long-term potential.

It was fellow CEOs who told Reid to go do the roadshow—to talk to investors and shop around for offers. Reid explained that finding other people who have “been there, done that”

“I’m not looking to move on to the next thing,” he added.

“Zonos is here for good, and I am excited to continue to build the future of global trade technology.”

2020 Census Reveals Continued Growth in Southern Utah

First Insights from the 2020 Census

E

arly results from the 2020 Census confirm that Washington County’s population continues its path of rapid growth, fueled primarily by in-migration of new residents. In August, the Census Bureau released the Redistricting Data file from the 2020 Census. While this is a critical component in the realignment of political districts, it also provides the first insights into our communities from the decennial count. From this data, we learn the total population, basic insights into housing units, and more detail on race and ethnicity for the total population and the voting age population (18 and over).

The initial release of the Apportionment Data revealed that Utah was the fastest-growing state in the nation at 18.4% or 507,731 new Utahns. Until the redistricting data release, we did not have definitive answers about the picture inside the state. Last decade, Washington County was one of the fastest-growing in the nation. This decade, data indicated continued strong growth.

Total Population So, where would Washington County’s population end up in this once-a-decade count of everyone living in the United States? The redistricting data indicates that between 2010 and 2020, Washington County drove 8% of statewide growth.

On its own, Washington County was the second-fastest-growing county in Utah at 31% or 42,164 new residents. Wasatch County was the fastest-growing at 48% or 11,258 new residents. This high growth rate put the April 1, 2020 population at 180,279. The addition of 44,220 housing units helped provide places for these new residents to live. Most of this increase (77%) was contributed by net in-migration, with the balance (23%) of this increase from natural increase (births minus deaths).

Zooming in at the city level, St. George added the fourth most new residents among places in the state. The additional 22,445 residents placed the 2020 population at 95,342. In Washington County, Washington and Hurricane grew the fastest, with Washington’s population increasing by 49% and Hurricane increasing by 46%. This high growth resulted in an additional 9,232 residents in Washington and 6,288 in Hurricane, with both cities having 2020 populations over 20,000. These three cities were home to 79.5% of Washington County residents in 2020. Three of the smaller communities in Washington County (Springdale, Rockville, and Hildale) lost population throughout the decade.

Age In 2020, just over one in four Washington County residents were under age 18.

Despite the addition of 3,676 new Washington County residents under 18, this share decreased from 30% in 2010. The over 18 population drove most population growth this decade, with 36,488 or 87% of new Washington County residents being adults.

The three largest cities in Washington County have similar shares, with Washington having a slightly higher share of population under 18 at 29%. The growth in the over 18 population was the primary driver in these three communities as well. The adult population was the driver for population decline in the three communities that decreased throughout the decade.

Race and Ethnicity Like the state, racial and ethnic diversity increased this decade in Washington County.

Nearly one in five Washington County residents identified as a racial or ethnic minority in 2020, increasing from 2010. In Washington County, every racial and ethnic subpopulation grew throughout the decade. The largest racial or ethnic population in the county is non-Hispanic white, with 147,462 residents. The Hispanic or Latino population is the second-largest, as it had been in 2010, at 11.4% or 20,482 residents.

St. George is the most racially and ethnically diverse city in Washington County, with a slightly higher share of the Hispanic or Latino population than the county. In St. George, 21% of the population identified as a racial or ethnic minority in 2020. The Hispanic or Latino population is the largest group, growing from 13,092 residents in 2010 to 15,138 in 2020.

Washington County youth (less than 18 years old) are more racially and ethnically diverse than those 18 and older. The share of youth identifying as a racial or ethnic minority increased from one in five to one in four between 2010 and 2020. Racial and ethnic diversity in the over 18 population also increased, from 12% to 16%.

These data insights are just the beginning. The full release of data from the 2020 census is anticipated sometime in 2022. With that release, we will learn more about our communities’ entire age and sex composition, ancestry, relationships within households, and tenure (renting or owning a residence). This data provides a baseline for looking into the future, both locally and from the Census Bureau. For a long-term picture, the targeted release for the county-level projections produced at the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute is late 2021.

Piecing Together the Puzzle with the

RACE Method

By Adam Stoker Every successful marketing campaign starts with a secret sauce, a set of distinguishing strategies that provide oneupmanship in a highly competitive business environment.

One proven, action-oriented, customer-centered strategy is the RACE method.

If you look up the RACE method online, you’ll get a lot of different results for the acronym. At Relic agency, it stands for Research, Analysis, Creation, and Execution, and it is used for every marketing campaign, case study, and strategy session. Applying the RACE method is like putting together a big puzzle—it takes time and patience. Overall, having a method is infinitely better than trying to fit random pieces together. Each letter of the RACE method is one of our corner pieces, building the foundation of our marketing mix.

message to the right people at the right time. In a real puzzle, most people start with the outside pieces. Determine the most crucial parts of your campaign first, and build off of that. Sift through your data, and pull out the relevant parts.

Once you have the basic outline, the other pieces start to fall into place.

Creation: This is where the puzzle really starts to take shape. You have the background information and a plan. In our agency, this step looks like a catchy, creative design or enticing written content. Picture what this step looks like in your business. This is where many businesses tend to start the process, leading to a lot of backtracking and wasted time. Having all the pieces is key before creativity comes into play.

Research: This is the most crucial step of any campaign, and yet, it’s the most overlooked. Many businesses will jump into a project without putting in the work to understand first. In this step, we follow the four Cs: Customer, Company, Competition, Community. These allow us to identify target audiences and insights, equipping us with the information to build an effective campaign. The key is to gather as many puzzle pieces as possible. Don’t stress too much about understanding it all at once—that comes next.

Execution: Putting your plan into action is where you get to see the rewards of your hard work. This might be hitting send on an email campaign, promoting a digital ad, or hosting a live event. At this stage, you start to see feedback and conversions from your targeted audience. Once it’s published, you can breathe easier knowing you followed a tried-and-true recipe to piece together your puzzle. Results will roll in when you’ve put in the necessary effort to make a successful marketing campaign.

Analysis: Now that you and your team have gathered all the data, it’s time to plan how to put the puzzle together.

Organizing your research will ensure that you get the right

The RACE method is cyclical, meaning as soon as you have actionable data, you immediately go back to the analysis phase. It’s reliable and effective because each project builds on the last. There’s nothing more satisfying than putting in the final piece of a puzzle except pulling out the next box.

worked in corporate retail for ten years. My absolutely favorite time to work was on Black Friday and during the holiday season. I loved helping people shop for gifts, watching them get excited, and knowing that I was helping people have an amazing holiday.

The longer I stayed in retail, the more I began seeing the glaring disconnect between my values and the big box store structure. I remember standing at the back door of our store and accepting a delivery of 1,098 boxes. Each box was stamped “Made in Bangladesh‘’ or some other foreign country. Each box contained twenty shirts that were sprayed with weird smelling chemicals to make them wrinkle free and encased in their own plastic baggy. I remember standing there, looking at the mountain of waste, and thinking, “There must be a better way.” I vowed to slow down when my son was born.

That decision led me to get involved with our local farmers market. Each weekend, I was able to get to know our local farmers and artisans. I saw the blood, sweat, and tears poured into their crops and products. I heard their stories and watched their brands evolve.

2. Most local artists offer custom work. If you’ve had your eye on something or if a certain item speaks to you, most local artists are thrilled to take commissions. My only caveat to this is to ask early. A great deal of time and work go into making each piece, so start the custom ordering process now, and allot at least a month of wait time.

3. If you can’t get your custom work ordered in time, most locals offer gift cards so that your special someone can create the piece of their dreams.

4. Follow your local farmers market. Many close for the winter, but most do a holiday show or event. If they don’t, they are aware of the other local shows taking place and can direct you. Facebook Events also has filters that will help you find artisan events closest to you. While flea market events are great, most of the products they offer are resale items. Try and find events that specifically state “locally made.”

5. Find a co-op! Co-ops offer multiple vendors in one location and are usually staffed by the artists, making it possible for you to get in depth information on the items for sale. When we decided to open MoFACo, we brainstormed to create a model that helped local artists as much as possible. That’s how we determined that 85 percent of the sales price should go back to the artist. But because the other 15 percent goes directly to keeping the co-op running, 100 percent of your purchase stays local.

Being entrenched in our local scene began to change my shopping habits.

I began buying things because of the stories behind them and the connection I had to the producers. When I gave gifts to people, I was astonished by how much the recipient loved hearing the story behind the gift. It seemed to make everything more meaningful.

When you shop local, it takes a little bit more time. It is more of an investment, but the results are so worth it. I have seen the co-op and markets change lives. Local artisans are able to support their families, and more than that, they eventually partner with other local businesses to expand and strengthen our local economy.

Buying local builds a connection between you and your community. It anchors you to southern Utah by saying, “I am here, and this is my home.” You get to know all the truly wonderful things this area has to offer, and in a world where we need that connection more than ever, isn’t that the greatest gift you can give?

This led me to make the decision to always buy local for the holidays.

It can be tricky, especially since generic “I want” lists don’t really lend themselves to small businesses; a lot of their items are one of a kind. But with a little bit of planning, shopping local can lead to an amazingly heartfelt holiday. Here are some tips to make it happen: 1.

Shop more for an esthetic than a specific item. For each person on your shopping list, write five words that describe them or activities they love. Then, look for things that make you feel that way. Self-care junkies would love ritual teas, all natural beauty products, or bath bombs.

The professional might like a leather notebook and locally made pen.

The family foodie would appreciate amazing locally roasted coffee and a new morning mug.

Hope Grows Here Providing safe shelter is an important service that DOVE Center offers to survivors of domestic abuse, but we do so much more. A survivor’s support from DOVE often begins with a moment of courage and a phone call to our 24/7 helpline. From there, our advocates and therapists provide pathways to their healing journey.

Resources, like DOVE’s financial empowerment class, help survivors build skills and confidence. Children’s programs help kids caught in the crossfires learn to let go of the burden domestic abuse puts on them to grow up too soon. Through empowerment groups, we provide a place of safety and trust to help teens build an understanding of healthy relationships. DOVE’s transitional housing allows survivors an affordable and safe transition from a home shared with an abuser to independent living.

In Utah, one in three women will experience domestic or sexual violence in their lives. No one deserves to experience abuse from the hands of someone who is supposed to love and care for them. The DOVE team walks alongside survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence, giving them safe shelter while also making sure they are heard, believed, and supported.

You can help keep the pathways to safety and healing open for all abuse survivors.

• $25 provides a night of safe boarding for a survivor’s pet.

• $50 fills a car tank so a cut-off survivor can get to work or school.

• $100 buys essential clothes for a mother and her children who leave home with very few items.

• $500 funds supplies and materials for a teen Empowerment Group.

• $1000 helps with the transitional housing expenses of a survivor seeking independence.
