One of the great proven sires in our lineup, depend on Emerald to improve udder and foot quality in a quick-shed ding package that works great on fescue.

Among all the Confidence Plus sons in the Angus population, no other bull rivals Emerald’s blend of proven production traits with BW accuracy over 0.95 and carcass progeny on his record.

Armstrong provides exactly what many breeders are seeking… outcross pedigrees with a focus on structure and proven maternal traits. He excels for foot quality, docility, PAP, and a host of other traits.

Ecofeed® is a feed conversion index based on progeny testing to identify animals who are good for your feed bill and the environment!

Efficient animals CONSUME LESS while PRODUCING MORE than expected at any given body size and level of performance.

Efficient feed conversion results in using fewer feed resources, less waste and manure, and reducing the carbon footprint.

Ecofeed® by STgenetics® enables producers to positively impact an animal’s carbon footprint prior to birth and reduce the input cost of beef production.

Environmental sustainability in agriculture is paramount as demands on our natural resources increase. Decreasing tillable land affects costs of feed and grazing, while drought affects crop irrigation and grazing. Selecting animals based on feed conversion efficiency plays an important role in the environmental sustainability strategy of your operation, because efficient cattle consume less while maintaining the same, or higher, level of production on less resources.

Whether you are feeding cattle for finish or production, feed represents one of the largest variable input costs in your operation. Based on data collected, animals with high feed conversion efficiency consume 17% to 24% less feed than their inefficient counterparts, with similar body size and level of production. Isolating the genetic components affecting feed conversion efficiency allows you to decrease feed costs and increase environmental sustainability, with high performance animals who improve your profitability. GENETIC ADVANTAGE
High genomic calves had a over low genomic calves! What happens when feedlots can predict genomic value?

Genetic Development Center® research shows high feed conversion animals consumed 4 lbs. less per day, or 1200 lbs. less across a 300-day feeding period, compared to inefficient counterparts. A ration cost of $0.12 per lb. of dry matter equals a feed cost savings of $144.00 for high feed conversion animals, with no impact on performance or days to feed (Figure 1).

Average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion efficiency demonstrated the top 25% of animals for growth and feed conversion consumed 2 lbs. less feed and gained 0.9 lbs. more per day than the bottom 25% of animals. These superior animals went from 400 lbs. to 1,350 lbs. 94 days sooner, while requiring 2,610 lbs. less. As a result, these animals had a higher net profit of $346.10 due to lower input costs during feeding period (Table 3).

RFI measures the difference in actual compared to expected feed intake based on what’s needed to support and maintain the performance of each animal. Efficient animals consume less at any level of performance and body size. With an estimated heritability of 0.24, progress can be made each generation with increased selection pressure on efficient animals. 37

INTRODUCING

• Steadfast was a high-selling feature of the 2021 NJW sale and a coveted individual due, in part, to the incredible matron cow, 202C. One of Ned and Jan Ward’s favorite cows and surely one of the breed’s best – she makes Steadfast unique amongst many Endure sons.

• He is a super complete sire with a fault free EPD profile who offers worlds of potential.

Mandate is possibly the breed’s most complete, heifer-bull package of proven calving-ease, maternal power, growth, and eye-appeal. He descends from two of the most productive females in the Shaw herd.

Use him on heifers or cows to improve udder quality and add eye pigment, without sacrificing growth or marbling.

Perfecto is now deceased, but you can still capitalize on the genetics of this highly-proven, big-time spread bull that has been a high customer satisfaction choice in both commercial and seedstock herds.

He fits many parameters and meets all of the cosmetic demands of a progressive Hereford breeder.

2021 U.S. average feeder-cattle and calf prices, for heifers and steers, by weight At 550 lbs. the price spread is $22/cwt or 13% higher for steers vs. heifers. This graph represents that heavier calves are worth more on a per head basis even though they sell at a lower price per pound! Focus on Feedlots was created in 1990 at Kansas State University to provide basic feedlot performance data for steers and heifers, and feed ingredient prices. Monthly closeout data from various feedlots are summarized to provide average values for several variables. The closeout data report from August 2022 displays data collected from 63,981 head of cattle and demonstrates the increased performance of steers versus heifers in feeder cattle (Table 1).

1)

Since steers are more feedlot efficient and have heavier carcass weights, industry efficiency could certainly be improved by skewing the number of commercial heifers produced

the direction of producing more steers. The increasing value of steer calves relative to heifers provides a potential opportunity to add value to the calf crop by increasing the percentage of steer calves produced. (Table 2)

HERD APPROACH Whether your market is at weaning, background, or finish you can capture more pounds and value by skewing the gender ratio of your calf crop using high fertility sex-sorted semen. USING Gender Control 54
The Odde Ranch in Pollock, South Dakota has continued to participate in a field trial with STgenetics® to evaluate the use of gender-selected semen in a commercial cow-calf setting. The objective of this trial is to evaluate the use of gender-selected semen by using sexed male semen on mature cows of terminal Charolais sires to implement crossbreeding and maximize pounds. Additionally, sexed female semen is used on yearling heifers and 2-year-old cows of maternal Angus sires to generate replacement females (Table 2).

WHOLE

Dr. David Lalman and his team at Oklahoma State University (OSU) conducted an experiment to determine the potential reduction of annual cow maintenance costs with Hereford-sired black baldy cows compared to straight-bred Angus cows. The OSU researchers conclude that simple, planned crossbreeding systems using breeds that compliment one another can reduce the cost of maintaining a cow herd, and increase ranch output through improved longevity and fertility.

improvement you get in fertility and longevity is still viable in crossbred animals. It’s not a free lunch in the cattle industry, but it’s as close to a free lunch as you’re going to get.

Sexed semen can be used on any female observed in estrus (heat) and following synchronization with any protocol on PG 74-75. For best results with sexed semen, perform AI 18 to 22 hours after detecting females in estrus. Use of estrus detection aids (EDA) is highly recommended (See PG 72).

SPLIT-TIME AI (STAI)

Perform first TAI 66 ± 2 hrs after PG in estrous females. GnRH administered at second TAI only in non-estrous females. Females detected in estrus by first or second AI receive Sexed semen. Females that do not come into estrus receive Conventional semen at second AI.

FIXED-TIME AI (FTAI)*

To optimize pregnancy success, it is recommended to use Sexed semen on females that have exhibited estrus before FTAI and Conventional semen on females that have not exhibited estrus.
