Hiring employees to perform daily maintenance tasks continues to be one of the greatest challenges for golf course superintendents. Unfortunately, it does not look like this issue will go away any time soon. The labor shortage throughout the country is part of the problem, but the wages in golf course maintenance are a major hurdle as well. Golf courses are relatively competitive with each other when it comes to hourly wages, but compared to industries that require a similar skillset, golf courses offer several dollars less per hour on average. Without a doubt, wage offerings are weighed heavily when potential candidates are determining whether to apply. Of course, there are certain benefits that golf courses can provide – like complimentary golf and a beautiful place to work – that the roofing and landscape industries cannot, but at the end of the day, money talks. Looking at the current national averages, the golf course maintenance industry has gained significant ground when compared to the numbers we reported in the 2019 article “Labor by the Numbers.” However, golf course maintenance still lags behind similar industries. The obvious solution is to offer higher wages, but anyone familiar with golf course maintenance budgets knows this is easier said than done. Labor typically makes up the largest portion of a golf course maintenance operation budget, so a hefty budget increase would be necessary to accommodate wage increases for new hires. You also have to consider the wages being paid to current agronomic team members. If new hires are offered higher compensation, it can be expected that more-experienced employees would be in line for a raise as well.
Based on current data from Indeed.com, golf course maintenance wages are still falling short of industries that are competing for the same workers.
A “do more with less” philosophy has been in place for far too long in golf course maintenance. With golfer demands and expectations increasing every year, something must give. For playing conditions to continue meeting expectations, the proper funds must be provided to account for increased labor costs and the rising cost of materials and equipment. Memorial Park Golf Course would like to invite you to volunteer with the Agronomy Department for the 2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open, March 25th-31st. With a change of our tournament date, we are excited to present an overseeded golf course once again in Houston, TX. We would like to add 30-40 capable volunteers to our existing team to help setup the golf course each morning and afternoon. There are a wide variety of tasks that we will be completing each shift: walk mowing greens, tees, and collars, mowing fairways and approaches, collecting stimpmeter and firmness data, hand watering greens, raking bunkers, and blowing clippings or debris are some great examples. Morning Shift (Monday-Sunday): 3-4 hours Start time = 4:00 am Monday-Friday Start time = 5:00 am Saturday and Sunday Afternoon Shift (Monday-Saturday): 3-4 hours Start times will vary depending on pace of play Approximately 4:00 pm each afternoon Provided: Hotel rooms will be provided for those traveling from out of town Donuts and coffee prior to AM shift Breakfast following AM shift Lunch will be provided 1 hr prior to PM shift Full week volunteers: 5 shirts (Wednesday-Sunday), 1 pullover, 1 hat Partial-week volunteers: 1 shirt/full day shift, 1 hat Round of golf in Vendor/Volunteer Tournament in April 2024 I look forward to getting to meet fellow superintendents, assistant superintendents, and staff members from the area. The week of the Houston Open will be a great opportunity for networking and watching some of the best golfers in the world take on the challenge of Memorial Park Golf Course.
