CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to Brad Seiler & Kyle Brown for winning the 2023 Marian Takushi Memorial Conference & Trade Show Scholarship!

The GIS has always held a special place in my heart over my career. Once I became a spray technician back in the early 90’s, I joined GCSAA on my own. I wanted access to as much information as possible. Like most of us, as least in those early years, I was a sponge and, on a mission, to conquer the world. Then I heard about this thing they called “The Show”. So, I took that proverbial deep dive to find out more about it. I was in overload. The amount of resources, networking, and information available all in one place blew my mind. Fast forward 26 years and I still get as excited as that young buck from back in the day that had no clue.

This year I found myself in a position to not be able to attend the 2024 GIS due to finances. Then someone mentioned the GIS scholarship opportunity through STGCSA. Although reluctant at first, I reached out and applied. That was one of my better decisions as I ended up being selected as one of this year’s recipients.

This years show was fantastic. The education I participated in was very informative, current, and relevant to my region. So many times, you attend meetings for education and the data they use is 10+ years old and doesn’t include the newer chemistries being used in the industry. In some cases, philosophies or practices once the norm, evolve or change. I left with my eyes opened wider as I learned some new approaches to tasks we regularly perform, new thoughts or perspective on those applications that are all about timing, and a higher understanding of some of the newer chemistries currently available and/or becoming available soon. Still benefitting after 34 years in the industry.

In regard to the trade show, I felt it was very user friendly and easy to navigate. I picked up a lot of information and ideas, and even did quite a bit of actual business. In my opinion, the entire venue was amazing. From the hotel and accommodations available, local businesses, transportation, proximity to the airport, etc. I would love to see Phoenix become part of the main rotation of GIS for years to come. Thank you to the STGCSA for affording me the opportunity to attend.
