Dear Class of 2020, Congratulations to you for your amazing accomplishments during your time at St. Francis! You are phenoms, champions, and scholars ready to apply your well-honed gifts and talents to enhance and advance this world we live in. The world we assumed would welcome graduates with open arms has changed in ways we could never have imagined. We are all saddened by the losses and postponements of everything from classes to ceremonies, to celebrations, and all of our annual traditions.

We recognize that these are unprecedented times and not the way in which you envisioned being celebrated at the end of your four years. We want you to know that we’d love to be celebrating you in person, and our hearts are with you. We are proud of the way you have persevered during this time and come together as a class, even while being apart! You are resilient. You are courageous. You are Troubies! Today we recognize and honor ALL of you and your achievements. We thank your parents for their sacrifices and helping you achieve your success. We also thank our faculty and staff for all their amazing efforts in supporting you.

The awards and scholarships we honor today consist of national recognitions, donor-sponsored scholarships, and the highest honors, the pillar awards of Faith, Excellence, Leadership and Service as well as the Pax et Bonum Award. We know that while not every individual’s accomplishments can be recognized today, we firmly believe that all of you are filled with talent and potential. God has created each of us with unique talents that will change the world. And we know you will change the world, no matter what worldly recognition you receive.

Prayer for the Class of 2020 Good and Gracious God, We thank you that your favor, blessing, and powerful light surrounds our Class of 2020.

We pray that your presence would continually shine on them, and that you would be gracious to them and give them great hope and peace, especially during this uncertain time in our history.

We ask that you would help them to know how very much they are loved by you. Make them constantly aware that you are always with them; fill them with the faith to believe that your words are true and that your Spirit guides them.

We pray that you would give them health physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and would protect them from any harm to their minds, bodies and spirits.

We ask boldly for you to equip them for every purpose you have for their lives, and give them constant endurance to run the race well.

We ask the St. Francis community in this time of social distancing to come into closer understanding of the ways we can help support and lift one another up. In this time of darkness, let us choose to see and be the light for others.

National Merit Commended Students

Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. These high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as a Commended Student. They receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.

National Merit Finalists

Over 1.6 million juniors entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screening of program entrants. The nationwide pool of 16,000 Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors, and most of those semifinalists will go on to become finalists.

National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars

The National Hispanic Recognition Program recognizes students who scored in the top 2% of more than 250,000 Hispanic & Latino students who took the PSAT. Ciara Colgan & Gabriela Parish

United States Military Academy at West Point Appointment

The United States Military Academy at West Point’s mission is “to educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character, committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the United States Army.” West Point, like many of the other military academies, is one of the most difficult to gain acceptance to. The value of the education and training this student will be receiving is in excess of $250,000. She will be a member of West Point’s track and field team, lending her high jumping skills to them. Upon completion of her four years of study, she will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, in which she’ll serve 5-years of active duty.

General Excellence

The general excellence medal is awarded to students who have earned a cumulative 4.00 GPA or above for their eight semesters of high school. In a class of 232 students, 82 have earned the general excellence medal.

The Matthew Bartkiewicz Family Memorial Scholarship honors a graduating senior who has contributed in a special way to the life of St. Francis High School.

Dennis Fatheree Science Memorial Scholarship

The Dennis Fatheree Science Scholarship was created by Dr. Pamela DiTomasso ’72, a graduate of St. Francis High School, a current St. Francis Board of Trustee, and a former student of Mr. Fatheree. Mr. Fatheree was a Chemistry teacher at St. Francis for over 30 years and passed away in November of 2003. This scholarship recognizes a graduating senior who excelled in science and plans to study science in college.

Marie Lynch Butler Memorial Scholarship

The Marie Lynch Butler Scholarship was established by Susan Butler-Siler, a graduate of St. Francis High School, in honor of her mother. As a single parent employed as a teacher, Marie provided three of her daughters with a St. Francis High School education. This scholarship is for a graduating senior who plans on majoring in Education and becoming a teacher.

CIF Sac-Joaquin Section’s A. Dale Lacky Scholarship

The A. Dale Lackey Scholarship, named after the former Sac-Joaquin Section and State CIF President, recognizes the top male and female student-athletes in the section (one each per league) for exceptional achievement in both athletics and academics. The scholarship committee then selects four male and four female students to receive a $1000 scholarship.
