PATRICK HUGHES

Patrick Hughes creates complex and subtle watercolor paintings. Though abstract, his work invokes narrative, finding pieces of the familiar world in his small compositions. His works evidence a meticulous control in the gradation of the palette and the complex relationships found within his forms. Hughes’ focus on edge, color and composition is palpable, emerging in his sophisticated and delicately balanced paintings.

Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, Hughes has spent a lifetime creating fastidious, small scale, thoughtful paintings. Private and particular, the artist made a conscious decision to work for self, not showing for several decades, until his solo exhibition with Stewart Gallery in 2013. Knowing the brilliance of his career, Stewart Gallery is honored to be able to bring his work to a larger audience.
