We have identified key outdoor attractions to put on your must-do list.
Take a friend or your family and hike or bike the 12 mile scenic multi-use paved trail that loops around Lake Wilhelm at Maurice K. Goddard State Park. There is a lot of nature to view from this trail so don’t be surprised to see Bald Eagles, Osprey or Trumpeter Swans. Other animals that inhabit the lake are Beavers and River Otters.
Have you ever explored a trail on buggy? Well you can do just that at Hells Hollow Wildlife Adventure Trail in Mercer (724-662-1999). Rent a trail buggy or hike and explore 8 miles of historical, environmental and wildlife trails. See beaver dams, deer, wild turkey and try bird watching. Explore waterfalls, and one of Mercer County’s first iron ore furnaces. See Hell’s Hollow Farm with an old stone house built in 1824 and wander thru acres of historic Indian hunting grounds.

There are numerous smaller trails for your enjoyment including: the 2.54 mile Trout Island Trail in Sharpsville. This trail passes through woodland, farmland and travel adjacent to the Shenango Valley dam. In addition there are several self-guided nature trails managed by Shenango River Lake.
Scouts, organized groups, families and friends can enjoy paddling down the newly opened channel on Shenango River. The total water trail is 23 miles and there are numerous launch points. Enjoy 8 miles of the water trail from Pymatuning Reservoir to Riverside Park in Greenville. Carried Away Outfitters (724-456-7334) has a fleet of kayaks and canoes for rent to enjoy local waterways & lakes.
For high power boating, launch your vessel at the Shenango River Lake for an excitement filled day of water skiing and tubing. Areas are provided on the lake for unlimited horse power operation and water skiing as well as areas designated for electric motors, restricted horsepower and minimum wake operation.
Fishing is a popular past-time in the Mercer County area with both Lake Wilhelm and Shenango River Lake offering good-size bass and quality channel catfish. Shenango River Lake attracts fishing enthusiasts for walleye, crappie and muskellunge. In addition, thousands of anglers are drawn to the dam’s overflow area for the trout fishery which is stocked year-round by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
For the adventurous, SkydivePA offers skydiving taught by experienced, professional instructors. Skydive Pennsylvania is a USPA affiliated full time commercial skydiving school.
