One of the things that makes b’gifted special is their emphasis on local art. At any one time, they have more than a dozen artists’ works displayed, ranging from oil paintings and mixed media to photography and handmade jewelry. Several of their artists are award-winners and many have their work displayed in museums and galleries in the region. They also support our local arts council and are performing arts patrons for the Paper Sky Theatre. At b’gifted, they believe that art increases our quality of life and makes a vital difference in our community.

“The first thing I ever smelled was chocolate,” said Pete Daffin. Daffin’s Candies was started by Pete’s father George Daffin in 1903 in Woodsfield, Ohio. Pete moved the store to Sharon in 1949 where it is known as the world’s largest family owned candy store. Daffin’s which has been featured on the Travel Channel, offers a wonderful selection of homemade chocolates, candies, cards, and gifts. It is also home of the “Chocolate Kingdom.” These unique chocolate sculptures will delight all.

At DJ’s Greenhouse they do more than just grow plants for your landscape needs, they also have 5 acres of gardens for that perfect photo of your wedding or graduation. Check out their diverse educational classes or attend one of the many garden events held all summer long.

Grove City Premium Outlets Western Pennsylvania’s premiere shopping destination opened in 1994 and attracts over 6 million visitors annually. Reyers Shoe Store was founded in 1886. In the early 1950s Harry Jubelirer of Pittsburgh bought Reyers from the original owner’s son, Carl Reyers. At the time, Reyers was a small store and carried only women’s shoes and narrows only. There were six other shoe stores in the downtown Sharon area. Under Mr. Jubelirer’s leadership, Reyers grew and became the world’s largest shoe store in 1984. In November 2014 Harry Jubelirer was inducted into the National Shoe Retailers Hall of Fame.

Wendell August was founded in Brockway, PA in 1923 by Wendell McMinn August. The company started out creating hand wrought decorative ironware such as fireplace andirons, candlesticks, lighting standards, doorknockers, latches, railings, and grilles for windows and doors. Later the company expanded its product line to include treasured Collector’s Plates and commemoratives, Christmas ornaments and gifts, trays, bowls, and vases, gifts for personalization, and jewelry.

Throughout their history the fabrication process has remained the same: each one still individually made by hand, in the tradition of fine craftsmanship. Among its many notable custom designs are mementos created in honor of the “Millionaires’ Flight” on the Hindenburg air ship, and the 12 solid bronze plates commissioned by the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency to commemorate the SALT II treaty between the U.S. and Russia.

The Winner has been in downtown Sharon for over 25 years. They sell over 8,000 prom gowns each year and register them all by school. The store showcases one of the area’s largest selections of special occasion dresses plus a year around swimwear department and an exceptional Bridal Enchantment department. The 1st floor houses a huge selection of jewelry, purses and accessories. The Winner donates over $100,000.00 in merchandise each year to different regions in PA and Ohio for such programs as Project Prom, My Fairy Godmother, The Outreach Center, Prince of Peace, Thrifty Threads and others for use in raising funds for their communities.

Shop. Dine. Art.

Grove City, PA

Olde Town Grove City, the heart of Grove City, is an active, revitalized downtown with the fresh, vibrant feel of a community that’s found its place. Unique shops, great places to dine and an expanding public art center have become the new identity for this small, tree-lined central business district bordering Grove City College’s beautiful campus.

The shops of Grove City feature a variety of niche-style shopping venues. A stroll down the sidewalks of Broad Street leads you to shops that feature everything from antiques, boutiques and bouquets to furniture, collectibles and gourmet chocolates. Several shops have children’s and infant clothing, toys and gifts, and one store showcases high-quality men’s clothing. Tourists and alumni alike can find many Grove City College offerings at their downtown shop Crimson Connection. Joden Jewelers is a world-class destination featuring fine antique, estate and modern jewelry, with many museum-quality pieces. ArtWorks is a gallery showcasing local art and housing a variety of small-venue art events.

Eating out in Olde Town has a bit of global influence, and includes old-world Italian cuisine, Filipino food, Japanese and Chinese offerings, as well as American fare, pizza and soup/ sandwich choices. Dining selections range from casual to sit-down meals; two of the restaurants offer a full bar for an enhanced dining experience. Summertime can find many patrons sitting outside and enjoying meals in the park or outside several restaurants.

Olde Town Grove City boasts one of the last remaining original single screen movie theatres in Pennsylvania. “The Queen of Broad Street” began as a vaudeville theatre and was converted to a movie theatre with the changing times. The Guthrie Theatre recently upgraded to a digital movie/sounds system that allows them to play firstrun movies, and at family-friendly prices.

Olde Town claims many events, with the Winter Wine Walk and the Autumn Art Walk as two of the regional highlights. Summer Sounds concerts occur in the Joseph D. Monteleone Youth Festival Park, and the Thursday Farmers’ Market from June through October draw locals and visitors alike.

In Grove City, art matters because it builds bridges and offers hope. This small town began a partnership eight years ago with George Jr. Republic, an at-risk youth treatment center in the area, to give the boys at George Jr. an opportunity to give back to the community. What started out as a way to make visitors conscious of where free parking can be found in town has grown into an award-winning project called Pointing the Way. Each sculpture is “pointing the way” to open parking areas for those visiting Grove City

who might not know where they are able to park. National and international visitors have come to view the sculptures, and they stay to enjoy the revitalized downtown. The art initiative is a vivid example of how art can transform a community. The five-year project completes mid- 2015 with a total of ten original sculptures.

Additionally, Olde Town enjoys two public and one private mural. The two public murals are inspired by the history of Grove City and show off many of its memorable events, historic icons and famous sons and daughters. The mural on the side of the Guthrie Theatre pops out as you round the corner from Main Street onto Broad Street’s central district avenue, and the celebratory Rainbow Bridge mural in Joseph D. Monteleone Youth Festival Park looks down over the festivities hosted in the park and gazebo. The private mural on the side of Nonni’s Corner Trattoria brings a touch of old Italy to passers-by.

Olde Town Grove City is a non-profit organization dedicated to a better downtown through economic development, physical improvements and marketing initiatives. Find out more at OldeTownGroveCity.com or follow us on Facebook.

Chestn ut Ru n Swim Beach

Home to the historic Mercer County Courthouse and the county seat

Mercer, PA

Mercer has a heritage reaching back more than 200 years. Approach the borough from any direction and your eyes will feast upon the striking dome of the Mercer County Courthouse.

Dome – Mercer County Courthouse
Mercer Memorial Day 500
Mercer Memorial Day 500

The present courthouse, a stunning edifice rich in history, was erected in 1909 at the approximate cost of $500,000. The architect was Charles F. Owsley. The courthouse, among its other features, includes a rotunda with a grand staircase, and artwork by well-known artists. In courtroom number one is displayed the mural “Criminal Law” by Vincente Aderante, and in courtroom number two “Civil Law” by Alonzo E. Foringer. The four rotunda panels by Edward Simmons feature depictions of “Guilt,” “Innocence,” “Power” and “Justice.”

On the spacious courthouse square view the Civil War Monument, the World War II Memorial, the Honor and Memorial Garden, the Vietnam Conflict Memorial, the bandstand and the surveyor’s stone. While strolling the town square, visitors can enjoy an old fashioned ice cream soda at the Mercer Mercantile & Soda Shoppe; a Lionel train display reminiscent of childhood days at Mercer Junction; an emporium of antiques and collectibles at Courthouse Square Dry Goods; an organic whole foods market; a quilt shop; fresh baked goods at Debi’s Diamond Street Bakery; chocolate confections at Shannon’s Kandy Kitchen, a family owned candy shop that was started in the 1960’s; and several restaurants, one serving fine foods and brews.

The Mercer County Historical Society, located on South Pitt Street, features a genealogical library and an array of exhibits, including Mercer County and Sports, Children of Yesteryear, and a military display. The historical society’s grounds encompass the charming Helen Black Miller Memorial Chapel, with its miniscule chancel, quaint wooden pews and stained glass windows, and the Thomas McClain and Son Print Shop. In early spring, admire a lovely little tulip garden, situated in the rear of the Historical Society. Each

October, the Civil War Roundtable of the Mercer County Historical Society conducts lantern-light walking tours that focus on Mercer’s cemeteries and sites associated with the Underground Railroad.

Located just a short distance away, Trinity Presbyterian Church is a red-brick landmark Civil War era building with beautiful stained glass windows.

Stroll to Venango Street and enjoy more of Mercer’s architectural treasures: Bethany Presbyterian Church, with magnificent stained glass windows; the Old Stone Jail, built in 1819 by Thomas Templeton; the Mercer Area Library and the Mercer Post Office, with its Depression-era mural.

Old Mercer Graveyard is located nearby, on the corner of North Erie and West North Streets. It is the site of the Garrett Cenotaph, a family monument that resembles a small pyramid, and represents one of Mercer’s most distinctive architectural landmarks.

Interred in the little historic cemetery are many of Mercer’s earliest settlers, and also American Revolutionary War and Civil War heroes.

In a corner in front of the Old Mercer Graveyard, in spring and summer months, blooms a Gateway Garden, featuring lots of flowers, thanks to a partnership between the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the Mercer Garden Club, and Mercer Area High School student volunteers.

The Mercer Memorial Day 500 has become a widely known event honoring our veterans. Every year, since 2005, community residents have volunteered to line the parade route with 500 American flags. It is a spectacular, heart-stirring sight. Following the Memorial Day parade, a tribute honoring our country’s military heroes is held in Mercer Citizens Cemetery.

Visiting Mercer on a Friday evening? The Mercer Community Band presents free concerts on the courthouse square from mid-June through early August. Music lovers bring lawn chairs or blankets to the park-like setting for a relaxed evening of great family entertainment.

now let’s talk about golf

The Mercer County Area is known for great golf and has been ranked one of America’s top golf destinations by Golf Digest Magazine.

Here you will find a variety of 4 and 4 ½ star courses within a half hour or less drive of each other. The area has become a mecca for golf groups looking for great courses and great value. The low green fees offer some of the most competitive and affordable pricing you will find anywhere in the U.S.A. Unbelievable low weekday rates (including cart) abound, such as $30 at Pine Grove to $34 at Tam O’Shanter where you will find lush fairways and fast greens. Spring Valley Golf and Lodge’s $99 dollar stay and play packages include barbecue steak dinners cooked by the owners, the Mills family on the patio of their 1870’s farmhouse restored into guest lodging.

The rolling terrains, perfectly manicured greens and tree-lined fairways are a beauty to behold and a pleasure to play. Oak Tree was named in the top two public golf facilities in western Pennsylvania by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Pine Lakes Golf Club and Resort is a 4 ½ star and PGA approved practice facility offering great stay and play packages. The Greens of Greenville and others too numerous to name make our area a golfer’s paradise.

Our area also boasts the world’s only free golf course, Buhl Farm (par 34, 2,378 yards) in Sharon.

Mercer County is pleased to offer customized stay and play packages to suit all size groups. Visit www.GolfMercerCountyPA.com to request a Play and Stay quote. We invite you to experience for yourself why we are one of America’s top golf destinations.

Poised to be the outdoor recreation capital of Mercer County

Greenville, PA

Greenville, Pennsylvania, a beautiful small town in northwestern Mercer County is known for its lush hillsides, beautiful waterways and rich history.

Thiel College Baseball
Downtown Greenville Mural Greenville Railroad Park and Museum

The community is home to Thiel College, a long-established institution of higher education founded upon the Lutheran Church. With its location on the Shenango River, the Greenville area provides an abundance of watercraft and family activities. The downtown has undergone a makeover in the past few years and flourishes with coffee houses, bakeries and eateries. There are many opportunities to entice your taste buds and see for yourself what makes local products so special. Among the places to enjoy are Carini Restaurant and Lounge, Fresh Grounds Coffee House and Café, Majestic Bar & Grille, Padrone’s Pizza & Pub and Strait Settlement.

Boldly proud of its history, Greenville has three unique museums that are a must see, each represent a different part of what made Greenville what it is today: the Greenville Railroad Park and Museum, the Erie Extension Canal Museum, and the Waugh House Museum and Historical Society.

Spend the weekend on your visit and enjoy their annual Heritage Days festival commemorating the town’s past, present, and future history in a three day celebration held the first weekend of every July. Stretching from Main Street (where they boast the county’s largest car show), to the town’s beautiful Riverside Park (home of Carried Away Recreation: kayak, canoe, and bicycle rental), Heritage Days is an event that will keep you coming back year after year.

If you are looking for an escape, spend the day immersed on the Upper Shenango River. Paddle down the meandering river, gleaning a swath of green leaves, and unforgettable moments. For a drier adventure, peddle across the Amish countryside and stop for a glass of Zinfandel from a local winery.

Finally, end your perfect escape with a night at the Greenville Symphony, or for you art enthusiasts, with a cup of Chai Tea, as your imagination unfolds at the Sans Moco Gallery & Atelier (the premier place for fine arts in the Greenville area).

Greenville’s attractive streets and lovely neighborhood settings make it the ideal location to visit. Visitors can find plenty to do within its growing downtown business area, beautiful parks and rivers, nearby lakes, restaurants, and shopping areas.
