Located in the Historic North Hill, the stunning 1917 mansions offer rotating exhibitions of noted artists and collections throughout the year. Additionally, you can tour their Downton Abbey period house, attend art classes and children’s events.

WEST PARK NATURE CENTER

This 100+ acre park includes 2 miles of trails for single track mountain biking, cross country running and hiking. In addition, the park has a one-mile walking trail, a picnic area, composting restrooms and a wildlife observation deck. The 25-acre certified Audubon Society Wildlife Sanctuary boasts sightings of over 60 species of birds. In the winter months, visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing as well as snowshoeing on the walking trails.

FIREWORKS DISPLAYS

New Castle holds the trademark “Fireworks Capital of America”, with that comes plenty of opportunity to view magnificent 11+ fireworks displays throughout Lawrence County. The Chinese are generally credited with the invention of explosive chemicals and the use of such chemicals in the making of fireworks. However, around the turn of the century, the art of manufacturing fireworks was brought to New Castle, Pennsylvania. Currently, Pyrotecnico calls New Castle home along with, Sky King Fireworks, a fireworks retailer.

CELEBRATE ITALIAN HERITAGE

Home to the largest concentration of Italian Americans in Pennsylvania, Lawrence County has plenty of authentic Italian restaurants to experience. Take a tour on our “Sunday Sauce” Trail which pays homage to the Italian tradition of families and friends gathering on Sundays for Sunday sauce. This is an invitation for residents and visitors to join in our traditions, not just one day but every day.

WESTMINSTER PLANETARIUM

A 45-seat full-dome theater housed in the Hoyt Science Resources Center on Westminster College campus. Professors and other astronomical professionals take students and members of the community on a tour throughout the depths of outer space through multimedia astronomy shows free of charge.

EXPERIENCE THE TRUE LIFESTYLE

The second largest Old Order Amish community in Pennsylvania is in Lawrence County. Learn about their culture with a drive yourself map or a guided tour of homes, businesses, and the Amish Countryside!

CLOTHING

Amish are easily identified by their appearance. The men grow a beard once they marry and always wear a hat. The women’s dress, primarily in blue, are fastened with straight pins rather than buttons because the church feels that buttons are too showy. They always wear a covering on their heads.

RESIDENTS

The Old Order Amish sect in Lawrence County settled around 1847. Currently, there are approximately 2,300 Amish residents in 19 church districts surrounding the villages of New Wilmington and Volant. The average family has seven children with each having daily chores to complete, starting at the age of seven.

LANGUAGE

Amish speak a dialect of German known as Pennsylvania Dutch, the language spoken at home. English is taught to children beginning in first grade.

HOMES

The Amish live on farms without the convenience of electricity. Many Amish homes include additions or small detached dwellings called “dawdy” houses, where grandparents live.

GRAVEYARD

A small nondescript Amish graveyard is located behind the white gate at the intersection of Auction Road and High Street outside New Wilmington. The small stones remember Amish; the larger stones remember Mennonites.

SCHOOLHOUSES

Most of the Amish children attend one of 19 different Amish-run parochial schools in the area. When in session, 25 to 30 children from first to eighth-grade are enrolled in each. To complete school they must take and pass a difficult eighthgrade proficiency test.

AUCTION HOUSE

The Auction House is located off Route 208 in New Wilmington. Amish and English farmers meet at the market every Monday to socialize and purchase goods such as livestock and kerosene.

TRANSPORTATION

The Amish mode of transportation is a horse and buggy, although for work or long distance travel they will ride a bus or hire a vehicle to transport them. Brown-capped buggies are unique to Lawrence County.

100 Years of The Scottish Rite Cathedral

Impassioned as a large meeting place for many to gather, The Scottish Rite Cathedral, which is situated on the North Hill overlooking downtown New Castle, became the brainchild of John S. Wallace, a Masonic official. The cornerstone was laid in 1925 and in November 1926 the first function was heralded.

One room in the Cathedral has served many purposes. In this room, even though there is space available for four lanes, a planned bowling alley was never constructed. During the depression, the National Rifle Association adopted this room as a rifle range. With the advent of World War II and the possibility of an atomic threat, a 100-bed hospital was readied but never used.

The auditorium has a seating capacity of 2,800 and showcases a Mueller five-console type organ, which is one of the last in existence. The auditorium stage was once the largest and most striking between New York and Chicago. Singers such as Gene Autry, Johnny Cash, Charlie Pride, Reba McEntire, Anne Murray and Michael Feinstein have graced the stage. The San Francisco Symphony, the Minneapolis Symphony and Pittsburgh Symphony have all performed here as well.

Today, the New Castle Regional Ballet performs The Nutcracker every December, along with many dance recitals and competitions gracing the stage and tribute concerts. Rumored to be haunted, you can catch ghost night events throughout the year. You can hear the famous Mueller organ being played on silent movies nights.

The Cathedral also houses the John S. Wallace Memorial Library. The library provides a collection of many items such as pictures, books and jewels that have been donated by members, relatives and other interested persons.

The Cathedral has four joining banquet rooms available for rent: the Ball Room, the Main Dining Room, the East Dining Room, the West Dining Room, Grand Lobby and Mezzanine outside.

The East Lodge Room is used for meetings of the Scottish Rite, Eastern Star and the White Shrine.

In 2009, The Scottish Rite Cathedral was named to the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2025, plans include an open house and Masonic exhibit tours to kick off celebratory events marking 100 years. On June 13-14, 2025, there will be a two-day event which includes an anniversary dinner and a patriotic show of music and laser technologies on the first evening. Part two will begin on the following day at noon with the unveiling of the Cornerstone time capsule from 1925, along with building tours that afternoon. A documentary is planned to record the events to capture this momentous occasion.

CEDAR WAXWING

Often heard before they’re seen, the everbeautiful Cedar Waxwing can be found where berries are abundant, open woodlands, along rivers and ponds or even in suburban yards. They are sociable birds who love to perch with their friends.

Their shiny and silky feathers are made up of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a crest, black mask, and red wax droplets on the tips of their wing feathers.

BALD EAGLE

The United States national symbol since 1782, the majestic Bald Eagle can be found near water, where they are likely to be looking for fish. A spiritual symbol encompassing strength, courage, wisdom and freedom for Native American people, these regal birds aren’t actually bald but the white to brown contrast of their feathers make their appearance “bald”.

Look for them soaring in solitude along the water’s edge or chasing other birds for their food.

If you’re lucky, you’ll see one proudly perched on a rock or branch scoping out the water. Once endangered, Bald Eagles have flourished under protection.

INDIGO BUNTING

Sometimes nicknamed, “blue canaries”, the Indigo Bunting is a part of the Cardinal family. True to their namesake, the male’s brilliantly indigo-colored feathers stand out. Female Indigo Buntings are brown.

One of the most abundant songbirds in the area, you can hear them singing from dawn to dusk through the late spring and summer. Look for them in weedy fields and shrubby areas near trees.

EASTERN SCREECH OWL

Synonymous with nighttime eerie chills, The Eastern Screech Owl’s, “screech” is due to them defending their nest. But their soft and low hoots add a lullaby to the tranquility of night.

Common in woods, suburbs, and parks, the Eastern Screech Owl is found wherever trees are, camouflaged in nooks and tree crannies throughout the day. And their size might surprise you, they aren’t as big as you think.

EASTERN BLUEBIRDS

Seeing an Eastern Bluebird is a sign of hope, joy and good fortune. Male Eastern Bluebirds are a vivid royal blue on the back and head, and redbrown on the breast. While females are adorned with blue tinges on their wings and tail giving the grayer females a graceful look. We recommend using your binoculars because they are a small bird. You can find them sitting on telephone wires or perched atop a nest box, calling out in a short, wavering voice or foraging on the ground for an insect.

1 | ALPHA FALLS

The tallest known waterfall in McConnells Mill State Park, Alpha Falls is located at the edge of a hanging valley. The waterfall is at its peak during the rainy seasons. To reach Alpha Falls, you can take the trailhead for Alpha Pass Trail which is also part of the North Country Trail or can be accessed near the covered bridge.

2 | BIG RUN FALLS

Located in the Historic Cascade Park in New Castle, Big Run Falls is a circular-shaped fall with an accessible viewing point. The park was once an amusement park. You can view some remnants such as the beams from the rollercoaster, The Comet.

3 | BREAKNECK FALLS

One of the least known waterfalls in McConnells Mill State Park is Breakneck Falls. Located under it’s namesake, Breakneck Bridge, the falls holds its own with beautiful rock formations and conifer trees.

4 | HELL’S HOLLOW FALLS

Deemed the most scenic in McConnells Mill State Park, the falls are a short hike through from the Hell’s Hollow trail head. This 15-foot waterfall shows its beauty in all four seasons, not to mention the historic properties of lime kiln right next to the falls.

5 | KILDOO FALLS

An easy hike from the covered bridge and gristmill area and following the path along the Slippery Rock Creek.

This 50-foot waterfall is in the first Quaker settlement west of the Alleghenies. The waterfall and the surrounding area is rich in historical significance, which you can learn about from the interpretative signage around the park.

Designated a National Recreation Trail in 2003, The Stavich Bike Trail is the only bicycle trail in the United States that will take you through three different townships, two different counties and two different states.

Twelve miles long and eight feet wide, this paved trail runs parallel to the scenic Mahoning River and the rails of the former YoungstownNew Castle street car line. Over rolling hills, through farmlands and wooded countryside, the Trail unfolds east and west to provide safe, barrier-free recreation all year long. In the spring, summer and fall, the Trail is open for bicycle riding, hiking, walking and jogging; in the winter, the Trail is used for cross-country skiing. Hours of use are from sunrise to sunset.

Designated as a National Park in 2023, The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) has twenty-two miles of off-road hiking and eleven miles of temporary connector road walk in Lawrence County. This wouldn’t be possible without our local Wampum Chapter of the NCT.

In years past, Shenango China was manufactured here and presidential service collections were used in the White House for President Eisenhower and President Johnson. Along with President Reagan having a collection specifically made for Air Force One. Locals traveling across the country will quite often still turn over dinnerware to check if it was made by Shenango China.

Bob Hope can be heard on YouTube speaking about his start in New Castle as part of a vaudeville production. The Warner Brothers; Sam, Albert, Jack and Harry, established their first motion picture theater in 1907 showing the silent film “The Great Train Robbery.” This nickelodeon is being revived and is now accepting tours at the Historic Warner Cascade Theatre Museum.

When we say “Home is Here” we are not just referring to a location, but a strong sense of community that is being built in New Castle, PA as a place where anyone can lay down their roots and grow.

New Castle is the county seat of Lawrence County and is known for being the Fireworks Capital of America. In the 2011 movie, Super 8, New Castle was referenced as “The Fireworks Capital of the World.” The locals are very proud of their heritage and it shows.

The two main parks are Ewing Park (baseball field, tennis, bocce and basketball courts, swimming pool and an area just for kids – Kid’s Created Kingdom) and Stiefel Park (Softball and dek hockey). Other notable mentions are the nature trail, community plaza and the local farmers market.

The Wedding Cookie Table has strong ethnic and religious ties, linked mainly to European immigrants of Catholic descent – particularly present in industrial areas that housed Italians, Greeks, and other Europeans. The tradition dates to the Great Depression when many families couldn’t afford a wedding cake, so many helping hands would bake the sweet treats instead.

In a coordinated effort with the mother of the bride taking the helm, friends and family of the bride and groom lovingly prepare the cookies for their big day.

5. THE BILLY PATTERSON HOUSE

315 N. MERCER ST.

This two and one-half story, square plan Second Empire built prior to 1886, was home to industrialist William Patterson, who was instrumental in developing the areas coal fields and New Castle’s first hospital.

6. THE CLENDENIN HOUSE

301 N. MERCER ST.

The Queen Anne Victorian was built in 1870’s and was rumored to be a part of the Underground Railroad.

7. THE WILLIAM REIS HOUSE

312 HIGHLAND AVE.

This charming two and one-half story rectangular plan frame Queen Anne was built for industrialist William Reis.

8. THE GEORGE JOHNSON HOUSE

318 HIGHLAND AVE.

This two and one-half story square plan Colonial Revival residence was built for owner of Johnson Bronze, George W. Johnson, in 1901. He was a leading local industrialist involved in limestone, iron and bronze production.

9. THE JOHN BOWER HOUSE

328 HIGHLAND AVE.

This home was built for John Bower between 1886-1889. Mr. Bower was a local merchant and tailor. It was one of the first large homes built on the North Hill.

10. THE EDWIN OHL HOUSE

208 E. LINCOLN AVE.

A Queen Anne influence, the house was built in 1899 for Edwin Newton Ohl, the manager of the New Castle office of Republic Iron and Steel.

11. THE SCOTTISH RITE CATHEDRAL

110 E. LINCOLN AVE.

Constructed in 1924-1925 for the Free Masons Lodge #433 and dedicated in 1927, this Neoclassical rectangular plan contains a ballroom, banquet room and theater, as well as Masons’ lodge rooms and various smaller chambers. The theater seating capacity is 2,800.

SACRED SPACES

Pennsylvania’s only Saint Pio Chapel is in downtown New Castle at Holy Spirit Parish’s St. Mary Church.

In March of 1899, Grazio Forgione, father of Francesco Forgione (now known as Saint Pio or Padre Pio) moved to New Castle to work on a local farm in the Mahoningtown area of the city to send money back to Italy so that his son, Francesco, could meet the educational requirements to enter the Capuchin Order of Priests. And the rest, as they say, is history, with Francesco going on to the priesthood and becoming one of the world’s most beloved modern saints.

The Chapel was officially recognized on Thursday, September 19, 2024 with a special ceremony marked by the installation of an authentic first-

class relic of Saint Pio owned by the Saint Pio Foundation. The chapel is one of a series of six chapels in the United States in partnership with the Saint Pio Foundation which form the sign of the cross, and more specifically, the signs of the wounds of Christ - the Stigmata.

In addition to offering the faithful an opportunity close to home to pray in the presence of the relics of Saint Pio, the Saint Pio Foundation’s vision is that of fulfilling Padre Pio’s own desire when he said, “I am everyone’s everything.” Each visitor can now truly say, “Padre Pio is mine!”

Descendants of the Forgione Family still reside in New Castle to this day and recently met with the Saint Pio Foundation CEO, Luciano Lamonarca, to recount stories handed down through the years about Saint Pio.

SISTERS OF THE HUMILITY OF MARY

The Sisters of the Humility of Mary are a Roman Catholic religious community that was founded in France in 1855 and later immigrated to the United States.

Situated on 760 acres in Western Pennsylvania near the Ohio border, Villa Maria is the community center and home of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and encompasses a rich tradition of bringing more abundant life to God’s people. Located inside the Villa is Magnificat Chapel, an elegantly designed place of worship that has become the center of spiritual life for sisters and residents.

The Villa Shoppe, an official Fair-Trade retailer, partners with vendors to offer unique products that are responsibly sourced for every occasion and ensure fair wages to artisans.

On the grounds is the Villa Maria Farm, which grows certified organic produce that is seasonally available for sale, with proceeds helping to defray costs of donating produce to local food banks, shelters and parishes. The farm features a fully operational greenhouse and herb garden. Guests can also enjoy the beauty of nature on several hiking trails on the property. In addition, the Villa is home to one of the sisters’ sponsored ministries, Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center (VMESC). VMESC offers an abundance of programs for all ages, including personal and spiritual retreats. Overnight accommodation is available for up to 200 guests. VMESC also utilizes the Villa Maria Conference Center, a 2,760 squarefoot meeting space.

ORTHODOX MONASTERY OF TRANSFIGURATION

The Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration is a monastery for women under the jurisdiction of The Orthodox Church in America. It was founded in 1967 by Mother Alexandra (the former Princess Ileana of Romania) whose dream it was to provide a place where American Orthodox women from all ethnic backgrounds could come to live the monastic life and benefit from a liturgical cycle in English. Since that time, her vision has been fulfilled. The nuns, many of whom are converts to Orthodoxy, as well as the monastery’s many visitors, span a variety of backgrounds.

Located just 35 miles north of Pittsburgh, in the hills near Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, it is open to all pilgrims, Orthodox and non-orthodox alike. A visit to the monastery can provide a peaceful rest for your soul, an opportunity to get away from the busy-ness of the world and a time to experience God’s presence and guidance.

The monastery is closed Sunday afternoon through Monday (with the exception of certain Feast Days). Calling ahead for tours is highly recommended.
