The NCT is a footpath stretching over 4,800 miles from Middlebury in central Vermont to Lake Sakakawea State Park in central North Dakota; connecting both the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail with the Lewis and Clark Trail. In 1923, two teenage immigrants from Greece opened Coney Island Lunch in New Castle. Their restaurant specialized in selling Greek-style hot dogs with their own secret chili sauce. Now, M&P Coney Island, because of their great popularity and success, New Castle adopted the nickname “Hot Dog Capital of the World.”

Clothing
Amish are easily identified by their appearance. The men grow a beard once they marry and always wear a hat. The women’s dress, primarily in blue, are fastened with straight pins rather than buttons because the church feels that buttons are too showy. They always wear a covering on their heads.
Residents
The Old Order Amish sect in Lawrence County settled around 1847. Currently, there are approximately 2,300 Amish residents in 19 church districts surrounding the villages of New Wilmington and Volant. The average family has seven children with each having daily chores to complete, starting at the age of seven.
Language
Amish speak a dialect of German known as Pennsylvania Dutch, the language spoken at home. English is taught to children beginning in first grade.
Homes
The Amish live on farms without the convenience of electricity. Many Amish homes include additions or small detached dwellings called “dawdy” houses, where grandparents live.
Graveyard
A small nondescript Amish graveyard is located behind the white gate at the intersection of Auction Road and High Street outside New Wilmington. The small stones remember Amish; the larger stones remember Mennonites.
Schoolhouses
Most of the Amish children attend one of 19 di erent Amish-run parochial schools in the area. When in session, 25 to 30 children from first to eighth-grade are enrolled in each. To complete school they must take and pass a di icult eighthgrade proficiency test.

Auction House
The Auction House is located o Route 208 in New Wilmington. Amish and English farmers meet at the market every Monday to socialize and purchase goods such as livestock and kerosene.
Transportation
The Amish mode of transportation is a horse and buggy, although for work or long distance travel they will ride a bus or hire a vehicle to transport them. Brown-capped buggies are unique to Lawrence County.

175 Year Celebration of Lawrence County
Lawrence County was once split between Mercer and Beaver Counties, with the dividing line running through the “borough” of New Castle. As New Castle was centrally located and continued to prosper in the era before the Civil War, residents campaigned for the creation of a separate and independent county.
However, political party concerns impeded the formation of what became Lawrence County. Both Mercer and Beaver Counties were dominated by the now defunct Whig Party. In the campaign before the people and in the legislature, they adopted as their motto the last words of the renowned naval Captain James Lawrence in his battle with the British, “Don’t give up the ship!”
Once they reached their objective to form a new county, they also determined to name the new county in honor of the heroic Lawrence.
On March 20, 1849, Lawrence County was o icially signed into law.

To commemorate the 175th Anniversary, the County Commissioners voted to adopt Little Beaver Township resident, Ian D. Baker’s design as the o icial logo and flag of the 175th Anniversary.
Every detail on this flag has a purpose symbolizing something about Lawrence County’s history and providing a subtle blueprint on what Lawrence County needs to focus on to advance forward:
COLORS – Same as American Flag
• Red – Sacrifice and Determination
• White – Virtue and Peace
• Blue – Liberty and Independence
FOUR STRIPES – the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; each stripe represents a word in the state motto: “Virtue, Liberty, and Independence”
• Lower white “And” stripe represents the Peace within the unity of Liberty and Independence
THE CANTON – shaped like the county to represent its people: past, present, and future
• Set within the stripes to represent how the county was carved into Pennsylvania
• Placed in the upper hoist to represent the importance and significance of our county and its founding within the commonwealth
THE CANTON’S CHEVRON – Points to “Virtue” stripe to emphasize Virtue’s importance as the starting point to acquiring and maintaining Liberty and Independence
BROCADE FIREWORKS – The county’s place in the fireworks industry; fighting spirit of its people
CENTER STAR – City of New Castle; resembles comet firework

THE SAILS OF THE SHIP – Each sail represents a Fruit of the Spirit outlined in Galatians 5:22-23: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and the two flags on the masts are Self-Control, respectively, with the lower representing “Self” to emphasize humility
THE WAVES UNDER THE SAILS – Shows the ship moving forward to represent the forward momentum of the county when adhering to the Fruits of the Spirit; Each wave represents one of the county’s three rivers: the Beaver, the Mahoning, and the Shenango
“DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP” – Commodore Oliver Perry’s battle flag he created a er the death of his friend Capt. Lawrence; the founders of the county rallied around this motto when pushing for its establishment; it took several attempts, but their determination paid o and Lawrence County was established on March 20, 1849. You will notice there is no apostrophe in the word don’t in our flag and logo. This is to match Commodore Perry’s battle flag.

Waterfalls BREATHTAKING
1 | ALPHA FALLS
The tallest known waterfall in McConnells Mill State Park, Alpha Falls is located at the edge of a hanging valley. The waterfall is at its peak during the rainy seasons. To reach Alpha Falls, you can take the trailhead for Alpha Pass Trail which is also part of the North Country Trail or can be accessed near the covered bridge.
2 | BIG RUN FALLS
Located in the Historic Cascade Park in New Castle, Big Run Falls is a circular-shaped fall with an accessible viewing point. The park was once an amusement park. You can view some remnants such as the beams from the rollercoaster, The Comet.
3 | BREAKNECK FALLS
One of the least known waterfalls in McConnells Mill State Park is Breakneck Falls. Located under it’s namesake, Breakneck Bridge, the falls holds its own with beautiful rock formations and conifer trees.

4 | HELL’S HOLLOW FALLS
Deemed the most scenic in McConnells Mill State Park, the falls are a short hike through from the Hell’s Hollow trail head. This 15-foot waterfall shows its beauty in all four seasons, not to mention the historic properties of lime kiln right next to the falls.
5 | KILDOO FALLS
An easy hike from the covered bridge and gristmill area and following the path along the Slippery Rock Creek.
6 | QUAKER FALLS
This 50-foot waterfall is in the first Quaker settlement west of the Alleghenies. The waterfall and the surrounding area is rich in historical significance, which you can learn about from the interpretative signage around the park.

Designated a National Recreation Trail in 2003, The Stavich Bike Trail is the only bicycle trail in the United States that will take you through three di erent townships, two di erent counties and two di erent states. Twelve miles long and eight feet wide, this paved trail runs parallel to the scenic Mahoning River and the rails of the former Youngstown-New Castle street car line. Over rolling hills, through farmlands and wooded countryside, the Trail unfolds east and west to provide safe, barrier-free recreation all year long. In the spring, summer and fall, the Trail is open for bicycle riding, hiking, walking and jogging; in the winter, the Trail is used for cross-country skiing. Hours of use are from sunrise to sunset.
Designated as a National Park in 2023, The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) has twenty-two miles of o -road hiking and eleven miles of temporary connector road walk in Lawrence County. This wouldn’t be possible without our local Wampum Chapter of the NCT.

New Castle is the county seat of Lawrence County and is known for being the Fireworks Capital of America. In the 2011 movie, Super 8, New Castle was referenced as “The Fireworks Capital of the World.” The locals are very proud of their heritage and it shows.
In years past, Shenango China was manufactured here and presidential service collections were used in the White House for President Eisenhower and President Johnson. Along with President Reagan having a collection specifically made for Air Force One. Locals traveling across the country will quite o en still turn over dinnerware to check if it was made by Shenango China.
Bob Hope can be heard on YouTube speaking about his start in New Castle as part of a vaudeville production. The Warner Brothers; Sam, Albert, Jack and Harry, established their first motion picture theater in 1907 showing the silent film “The Great Train Robbery.” This nickelodeon is being revived and is now accepting tours at the Historic Warner Cascade Theatre Museum.

The Cunningham family moved in 1836, opened a business transporting wool, glass, iron and steel to the west.

This two and one-half story, square Queen Anne residence was built in 1892. Since 1941 it’s served as a family home, nurses home for the hospital, a dormitory, and has been a personal care home.

This three story, rectangular plan Colonial Revival residence was built in 1904-1905 for George and Alice Greer, founder of the tin mill industry in the county. It is now home to the Lawrence County Historical Society.

Built before 1900, this was home to William Stritmater and family who owned and operated Stritmater Brothers, a dry goods business.

This two and one-half story, square plan Second Empire built prior to 1886, was home to industrialist William Patterson, who was instrumental in developing the areas coal fields and New Castle’s first hospital.

This charming two and one-half story rectangular plan frame Queen Anne was built for industrialist William Reis.
8. THE GEORGE JOHNSON HOUSE 318 HIGHLAND AVE.
This two and one-half story square plan Colonial Revival residence was built for owner of Johnson Bronze, George W. Johnson, in 1901. He was a leading local industrialist involved in limestone, iron and bronze production.

This home was built for John Bower between 1886-1889. Mr. Bower was a local merchant and tailor. It was one of the first large homes built on the North Hill.

Constructed in 1924-1925 for the Free Masons Lodge #433 and dedicated in 1927, this Neoclassical rectangular plan contains a ballroom, banquet room and theater, as well as Masons’ lodge rooms and various smaller chambers. The theater seating capacity is 3,240.
