The fourth largest old order Amish community in Pennsylvania is in Lawrence County.
Learn about their culture with a drive yourself map (see pg. 9) or a guided tour of homes, businesses, and the Amish Countryside!
by
by Denise Guthery
The Old Order Amish sect in Lawrence County settled around 1847. Currently, there are approximately 2,300 Amish residents in 19 church districts surrounding the villages of New Wilmington and Volant. The average family has seven children with each, starting at the age of seven, having daily chores to complete.
Amish are easily identified by their appearance. The men grow a beard once they marry and always wear a hat. The women’s dress, primarily in blue, are dosed with straight pins rather than buttons because the church feels that buttons are too showy. They always wear a covering on their heads.
Amish speak a dialect of German known as Pennsylvania Dutch, the language spoken at home. English is taught to children beginning in first grade.
The Amish live on farms without the convenience of electricity. Many Amish homes include additions or small detached dwellings called “dawdy” houses, where grandparents live.
A small nondescript Amish graveyard is located behind the white gate at the intersection of Auction Road and High Street outside New Wilmington. The small stones remember Amish; the larger stones remember Mennonites.
Most of the Amish children attend one of 19 di erent Amish-run parochial schools in the area. When in session, 25 to 30 children from first to eighth grade are enrolled in each. To complete school they much take and pass a di icult eight-grade proficiency test.
The Auction House is located off Route 208 in New Wilmington. Amish and English farmers meet at the market every Monday to socialize and purchase goods such as livestock and kerosene.
The Amish mode of transportation is a horse and buggy, although for work or long distance travel they will ride a bus or hire a vehicle to transport them. Brown-capped buggies are unique to Lawrence County.
While touring the Amish Countryside, please refrain from taking direct photos of Amish faces. This is forbidden by the church because they consider the human spirit more important than the body.
Experience the Amish Countryside with a one-of-a kind guided tour! 724-923-9730

Adventure is engaging in an exciting activity or new experience, exploring the unknown or renewing that spirit of adventure within yourself.
That spirit might include taking a walk on the wild side at Living Treasures Wild Animal Park, or meeting the local spirits at Haunted Hill View Manor. Getting a little dirty in the only underground riding in old limestone mines at Mines & Meadows ATV Park or the thrill of guided whitewater ra ing and kayak tours via Connoquenessing Outdoors on one of our many blueways.
Maybe that sense of adventure is getting back into nature with the local greenways at McConnells Mill State Park, guided hiking tours with Penny Allenwood Outdoors or with the plenty of local and national trails. Feeling a little zen? Find yourself at the two local labyrinths.
The fun doesn’t stop here. There’s plenty more to enjoy in Lawrence County! So get out and explore!

Access
Designated a National Recreation Trail in 2003, The Stavich Bike Trail is the only bicycle trail in the United States that will take you through three different townships, two different counties and two different states.
Twelve miles long and eight feet wide, the Trail runs parallel to the scenic Mahoning River and the rails of the former Youngstown-New Castle street car line. Over rolling hills, through farmlands and wooded countryside, the Trail unfolds east and west to provide safe, barrier-free recreation all year long. In the spring, summer and fall, the Trail is open for bicycle riding, hiking, walking and jogging; in the winter, the Trail is used for cross-country skiing. Hours of use are from sunrise to sunset.
Master Gardners planted 7500 daffodil bulbs at the entrance of the trail in 2010
A trailhead is located on West Washington Street near Covert Road in Union Township.
North Country National
Scenic Trail
Parking
Camping
The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) offers twenty-nine miles of off-road hiking and eleven miles of temporary connector road walk in Lawrence County.
The Trail Town of Wampum offers a welcome to hikers, offering a small-town Pennsylvania atmosphere, an opportunity to resupply, and a chance to visit different historical structures and landmarks.
This wouldn’t be possible with our local Wampum Chapter of the North Country Trail Association. They are responsible for building, maintaining, and promoting the North Country Trail from Alpha Pass at McConnell’s Mill State Park to the PA/OH state line.
The eastern section of NCT travels through the spectacular Slippery Rock Creek Gorge in McConnell’s Mill State Park. The western part showcases the agricultural and industrial past and present of western PA, traveling past abandoned coal and limestone mines and family homesteads, the remnants of the infrastructure that once made this area the ‘brick capital of the USA’, and working farms and small factories and businesses.
