But as we speak with our readers, we have discovered there is an unbridled desire to share their own favorite locations. Beth Exley is the Marketing and Member Services Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau. She is a graduate of Clarion University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication. Beth has also been employed over the years in radio sales, print sales and as a marketing director for a small chain of furniture stores. She has been with the PA Great Outdoors since 2017 starting as Group Tours and Events Coordinator. Beth was promoted to Marketing and Member Services Coordinator in April 2019.

School was out for almost three months. We all stayed out past the streetlights coming on and caught lightening bugs with our friends.

We slept until well past the sun rising and spent all day playing in a sprinkler or swimming pool. There were family vacations and daytrips that made long-lasting memories.

5 Tips to Stay Fit While on the Road

If you are like most people, you find it much easier to sustain your workouts when you are at home and in your regular routine. Then…travel happens.

We’ve all been there! We begin our vacation or work trip with the best of intentions, swearing that we are going to “stick to the plan” no matter what!

Then you get a look at the hotel “gym!” (usually a sad and lonely room with some outdated equipment that reeks of chlorine from the pool in the next room. If you are lucky, you might get a couple of dumbbells but usually it is some weird multi machine and a couple of old, noisy cardio machines from

We all know how important proper nutrition is to our fitness and wellness goals, so don’t use vacation or travel as an excuse to make poor decisions. Of course it is ok to try to things and even indulge a bit on vacation, but do so within reason. This goes double for excess alcohol consumption!

Enjoy responsibly and you will be ready to tackle the next day and avoid a bunch of empty calories!

Most successful people have a plan and stick to it! Try to pre-plan fun, physical outdoor activities. Have a plan for how much desert or alcohol you will consume. I really like this tip on alcohol consumption from Joel Sanders of Exos: Joel says, “Drink the first, sip the second, refuse the third!”

Pittsburgh might be known internationally for its football and hockey teams, but any local sporting enthusiast also knows the running community in this town is flourishing and the city has the infrastructure to support it!

Runners in Pittsburgh have the opportunity to compete in a plethora of road races in distances ranging from a mile to a full marathon, join a local track club or explore our trail system around town or through the neighboring parks.

Groups like the Fleet Feet Pittsburgh Running Club give walkers, joggers and runners the opportunity to experience the city in many interesting ways. Interested in craft beer? You can join them for summer pub runs from the city's best microbreweries. Want to explore the neighborhoods that give Pittsburgh it's unique charm? This January, Pennsylvanians overwhelmingly voted in the Clarion River as the state’s 2019 River of the Year. The Clarion River meanders through the narrow valleys and hardwood forests of the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors region for 110 miles, flowing from Johnsonburg through Cook Forest to Clarion and ultimately joining the Allegheny River near Foxburg.

Over the last 200 years, the story of the river has been one of resource exploitation, degradation, resilience, and recovery.

The Clarion River has a longer floating season for canoeing and tubing than other rivers in the area.

along the river during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the runoff and effects of area industry heavily polluted its waters. However, a massive effort to restore it to its natural pristine condition ensued, and in time, it has experienced a tremendous recovery. Today, forested mountain slopes teeming with wildlife, intermittent ripples on the water, and rock outcrops along its edge provide a picturesque backdrop for outdoor recreation.

The 52 miles of the Clarion River and adjacent public lands along its shores provide abundant opportunities for camping, hunting, hiking, bicycling, wildlife watching, birding, and swimming, sightseeing, and picnicking.

The scenery, the feeling of remoteness, accessibility and the variety of recreation activities possible and ease of canoeing of the Clarion River combine to provide a significant recreation experience. This river has a longer floating (canoeing and tubing) season than other rivers in the area and is the perfect location for paddling adventures. It is also famous for fantastic brown trout fishing and is relatively accessible to the public.

A variety of recreational facilities in the Allegheny National Forest, Cook Forest State Park and Clear Creek State Park, support the river-based recreation.. “Having just observed the 2018 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act by hailing the conservation of nearly 52 miles of the Clarion River protected under that designation, we are elated to continue to honor the Clarion as the 2019 Pennsylvania River of the Year to celebrate its remarkable recovery and pay tribute to it as a treasured resource of the state,� said Kylie Maland of the Allegheny Watershed Improvement Needs (WINs) Coalition.

Along the Clarion River, in Cook Forest State Park, a new Park office is projected to open in the Fall of 2019. The new building will be much larger and will feature more room for park visitors as well as employees. It will have restrooms that will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The lobby will also feature interactive exhibits that will illustrate everything the park has to offer. In addition, the new office will have a meeting room that will seat between 40 and 50 people.

Step Back in Time at the Good Ol' Days House Story by Jason Krysinski.

No need for a time machine, one step into the Good Ol’ Days House will take you decades into the past.

Just one decade ago, Melanie Patterson decided to transform and preserve this classic home in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, built in 1928. It had been in her family since 1949. Originally owned by her grandparents, Joseph and Josephine Stringile after they emigrated from Italy. Until her passing in 2007, it was owned by her Aunt Janie. When Janie passed, and the house was up for sale, Melanie couldn’t imagine letting someone else own the home. So in 2009, her inspired dream became a reality.

If you are looking for a little nostalgia on your next trip to the Pittsburgh area, the Good Ol’ Days House in is the place for you. It’s a sure-fire location that will take you on a stroll down memory lane, or an educational journey for the younger visitors. The 1950s, 60s, and 70s are brought to life with themed rooms throughout the house. You can rent the house for a special event or stay the weekend with the family.

Over the past twelve years, as proprietor of The Good Ol’ Days House, in Belle Vernon, PA, Melanie Patterson has recognized the need for a travel guide especially for first time visitors to the area. She has spent some time creating her own travel guides to pass out to her guests, but recently decided it was time to create a more formal and professional guide that can be used, not only for her business and other local businesses, but also to be distributed in larger quantities throughout the state.

Many great things are born out of desire and necessity. The same can be said for Mon River Valley Magazine. The magazine’s mission is to encourage tourism in the region as well as share the hidden little gems of the Mon River Valley. As a regional destination magazine, it will highlight the four-county region with each issue telling a little bit of its history, its attractions, and all the unique and wonderful destinations waiting to be found.

My partner Josh had been a professional wine maker and consultant for seventeen years. The first batch of wine that he made was a dry wild huckleberry wine. The whole family picked the wild huckleberries!

What inspired you and Josh in the naming of the Vin De Matrix Winery?

The name Vin De Matrix is inspired by the brightest star in Vin De Matrix Winery is located at King’s Mountain Resort and Public Golf Course in Rockwood. The winery is South of Hidden Valley and Seven Springs ski resorts. It is tucked between Laurel Ridge State Park to the West and Laurel Hill State Park to the East. One of our mottos is "make us part of your afternoon adventure!" Many patrons stop in after adventures rafting in Ohiopyle, biking on the Great Allegheny Passage, visiting one of the recreation areas in the Laurel Hill State Park Complex, or touring Fallingwater.

My favorite pairing suggestion is a morning hike on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail; the 653 Trail Head is less than 5 minutes from VDX. So, please pop in for a pour! One of the best parts of Presque Isle is the variety of locations to choose from to enjoy the area. If you want to be around a lot of people, you can be. If you want to find some private, slightly romantic spots to relax, you can find it. That day, we chose an area to be around a lot of people.

As the kids removed their shoes to walk in the sand, I immediately realized that my desire for free-form family fun had caused me to forget some essentials when going to a beach.

To be honest, when we left the house, it wasn’t that warm, but as often happens in an early PA summer, the morning began cool and the afternoon was blazing hot. I didn’t think we would need bathing suits or towels, but apparently, we did.

After some short consideration, I told them if they didn’t mind driving in wet clothes, they could just go in with what they were wearing. And they did.

On the drive home, as the windows were open with the warm summer air dried their clothes, it occurred to me that this day was exactly what we needed. It was exactly what I wanted for them. It was a fun family memory of a day without technology (for the most part). And a day they could do whatever they wanted to do, including going into the lake fully clothed.

If visiting Presque Isle, you might want to plan a little more than I did, or maybe not. Also, I very much recommend making a stop at Sara’s Restaurant on Presque Isle.

This popular spot is a 50’s themed diner with excellent hot dogs and various dessert options. Also, with all of the trails and bike rental spots feel free to work off that food as you enjoy the area.

These words echo in my mind as I drive along route 19 on my way to Waterford, a town that helps you escape from the trappings of modern-day society. Just 14 miles south of the shores of Lake Erie, intriguing history awaits you in this town of 1,522 residents (2017 estimate). This is where a 21-year-old George Washington was dispatched on orders by the Virginia Governor Dinwiddie. His mission was to tell the French to vacate the area and halt their development of the Ohio Country to the south. The message was essentially ignored by the French and that may have been one of the first dominoes to tumble leading to the 7-Year War, also known as the French and Indian War. Fittingly, Waterford is home to a one of a kind statue of the future first president and Father of Our Country. The statue of Washington displays him in the British attire of 1753 when he delivered the demand.
