Johnstown Cambria 2022 Visitors Guide

Page 1

Welcome to Johnstown!

If all you know about Johnstown is its flood, you are missing out on much of its history – and a lot of fun!

Johnstown was a canal port, a railroad center, a steelmaking center, and the new home for a colorful assortment of European immigrants.

Johnstown was proudly named the first “Kraft Hockeyville USA” in 2015, recognizing the community as the most passionate hockey town in the United States. The movie “Slapshot”, rated one of the best sports films of all time, was filmed here, after all!

If you liked the “Rocky” movies, you’ll love Johnstown. This community was knocked down three times by devastating floods – in 1889, 1936 and 1977. Each time, our residents rolled up their sleeves, and rebuilt their homes and businesses.

Johnstown is reinventing itself once again, turning to recreation-based tourism with an emphasis on what has always been here…lush green hills, rivers, streams and reservoirs; valleys, plateaus and scenic vistas. Its natural resources, combined with year-long festivals and special events, nationally significant historic sites, arts and cultural offerings, and a walkable Downtown, is creating an emerging destination for visitors looking for new and authentic experiences.

You can boat whitewater on the Stonycreek River; ride our byways; bicycle country lanes, mountain bike single-track and cycle rail-trails; hike atop our lush ridges; and boat, fish, or swim in lakes once owned by steel companies. You can hear the inspirational stories arising from the town’s determination to survive and rebuild, and see how we made steel and mined coal. You can experience our immigrant heritage and growing arts scene. Or you can party with us at one of the top motorcycle rallies in the nation and other first-rate festivals and events. And all of the area’s experiences come beautifully framed by the scenic Allegheny Mountains.

Johnstown is located just 70 miles east of Pittsburgh (an easy drive on U.S. Route 22), less than a half-hour north of the Somerset Exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and less than an hour from the Bedford Exit.

So join us in Johnstown>for a visit or a lifetime!

Paddle Sports & Boating

Paddle the Stonycreek River’s longest continuous set of rapids in the eastern U.S.— 15 Class III-IV rapids in 4 miles!

To boat the Stonycreek, or “Stony” is to experience the best that this mountain river system has to offer. From the experts-only Class V water of Paint Creek to the East’s longest-continuous rapids in the Stonycreek Canyon, whitewater paddlers will find hydraulics aplenty here. But the Stony’s more placid stretches and the beautiful Quemahoning Lake offer places for lessexperienced boaters – or for those who are content to sit back and feel the ripples. With a growing reputation among paddlers and fly fishers, and the development of Quemahoning Lake as a family recreation area, The Stonycreek is becoming the place for mountain-style fun! Paddle or pedal, cast a fly or a plug, swim or picnic, enjoy a crowded festival or a solitary walk. The Stonycreek features outstanding recreational and leisure-time resources! (source: www.thestonycreek.com)

WHITEWATER RELEASES

The Stonycreek not only features great whitewater, but it can guarantee it! Just upstream of the Stonycreek Canyon on Quemahoning Creek sits the Quemahoning Dam, which has a 500 cfs release valve. The valve is opened on a schedule that is published in advance, assuring boaters who are traveling some distance that there will be whitewater to boat. Although the releases typically occur every other weekend from April into October, check the updated schedule before you go because the releases sometimes are canceled if the water level is too low in Quemahoning Lake. When releases do occur, they can dramatically improve the boating in the class III-IV Stonycreek Canyon. For the current release schedule, visit www.benscreekcanoeclub.com/ quemahoning-releases

GHOST TOWN TRAIL

Pennsylvania’s 2020 Trail of the Year!

A National Recreation Trail. Named one of the Best Hiking Trails in the U.S. by the editors of American Towns Media.

Natural beauty, fascinating historical features, and length: The Ghost Town Trail is a 48-mile long ‘rails to trails’ trail that blends these qualities and throws in a bit of challenge for flavor. The trail includes the 32-mile main stem portion from Blacklick, PA to Ebensburg, PA; as well as the 14-mile C and I Extension that includes the 4-mile Rexis Branch from Vintondale to White Mill; the 8-mile Stritty’s Way from the Rexis Branch near the Rt. 422 underpass to North St. in Cardiff; the 2-mile extension from Ebensburg to Beulah Road in Nanty Glo. A 2-mile mixed surface connection from the C & I to Duman Lake County Park gives trail visitors access to amenities such as picnicking, fishing, camping, and much more.

Named for the long-gone coal-mining communities that once dotted its right-of-way, the GTT flows past two massive iron furnaces, old coal-loading tipples, boney (coal-refuse) piles and other traces of industrial history. The Blacklick Creek valley in which it is situated is gorgeous, with mountain streams, stands of rhododendron, dozens of wildflower species and cool woodlands. The packed limestone paving provides an ideal surface for nonmotorized activities. ADA accessible. Bicycle rentals available at the Ebensburg trailhead at the Young Peoples Community Center.

The Johnstown Flood Story

Learn

the shocking story of the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889 and Johnstown’s remarkable recovery!

125 YEARS AGO in the waning years of the nineteenth century, the steel barons from Pittsburgh enjoyed a private retreat in the mountains of Cambria County. Known as the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, the members included Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick. The club boasted a multiacre lake, boathouses, and cottages. A large clubhouse served as a hotel and restaurant for members and their guests. Life was easy along the lake until the rains came that day. The storm began on Memorial Day and continued through the night.

On May 31, 1889, rising water in the lake breached the South Fork Dam, sending twenty million tons of water roaring through the Conemaugh Valley. The massive wall of water destroyed everything in its path. Houses, railroad cars and other debris all became part of the deadly mix that crashed into Johnstown and literally swept the town away. When it was all over, 2,209 people were dead; but from the destruction rose a spirit of survival and commitment that is still alive in Johnstown.

An unforgettable journey through a poignant time in Johnstown’s history. Here, the lessons of the past still apply today. Learn more by visiting the following sites and points of interest:

THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD STORY MADE THE BIG SCREEN!

In 2003, Johnstown Flood, narrated by actorRichard Dreyfuss, was released straight to DVD. Much of the footage from the Johnstown Flood National Memorial’s film Black Friday was taken from the 1926 silent film, The Johnstown Flood, which starred Janet Gaynor and George O’Brien. The animated short from 1946, Mighty Mouse and The Johnstown Flood, features our rodent hero using super-hypnosis to turn back time and “save the day”. Industry & Innovation

Westward, ho! Conquering the Alleghenies by canal and railroad. In the early 19th century, the Allegheny Ridge presented a nearly insurmountable obstacle rising nearly 1,200 feet standing in the way of expansion to the west. To conquer the Ridge — and cross it with roads, canals, and rail — was a challenge that mustered American ingenuity and established Pennsylvania as an industrial giant. The Pennsylvania Mainline Canal, completed in 1830, was the first route connecting Philadelphia with Pittsburgh and shortened the journey from three weeks by wagon to four days by railroad and canal. The Pennsylvania Railroad leaped the mountains with an all-rail route, sparking the development of the region’s iron, steel and coal industries. Civil engineering masterpieces such as the Horseshoe Curve and the Gallitzin Tunnels, as well as the vast Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive and car shops in Altoona, established the Ridge area as an early testing and research laboratory for railroading.

Cambria City

Johnstown’s emerging arts & cultural district

This colorful and walkable 10-block neighborhood was established in 1853 just after the steel making giant, the Cambria Iron Works became established in this area. A forerunner of Bethlehem Steel Corporation and United States Steel Corporation, the Iron Works attracted thousands of immigrants seeking work in the mills and mines. The area was a true melting pot of immigrants who found work in Johnstown’s cigar factories, distilleries, and breweries and established churches and social clubs while preserving traditions and cultures. Faith is both alive and lively in Cambria City as this cultural neighborhood makes a dramatic transition! Today, this is Johnstown’s arts

and cultural district. A walking tour of Cambria City can be found at: www.jaha. org. Located along Route 56 (Broad St.), just west of Downtown Johnstown, from 1st to 10th Avenue.

Cambria City is the site of many events throughout the year, including the Jazz Along the River series, Sunday Market @ Cambria City, Ethnic Fest, theater & musical performances, and other gatherings. The events often feature delicious ethnic foods, entertainment, dancing, and arts & crafts.

Experience Small Town Hospitality in Ebensburg

Cambria’s County Seat

EBENSBURG TRACES ITS ROOTS back to 1797, when the Rev. Reese Lloyd and a group of eleven families traveled here from Philadelphia and established a Welsh colony. In 1804, Ebensburg was designated the seat of the newly formed County of Cambria. During the late 19th century, Ebensburg grew and prospered as word of the area’s natural springs and scenic beauty spread. Many of the wealthy from New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh constructed summer “cottages” of fifteen to twenty rooms; while others enjoyed the services provided by the Belmont, Lloyd Springs and Mountain House. These hotels counted Andrew Carnegie, William H. Vanderbilt, and Mary Todd Lincoln as guests. Today, Ebensburg features a charming downtown with quaint shops, eateries, and lodging. Located at the eastern end of the 48-mile Ghost Town Trail, Ebensburg is the perfect place for exploring the trail and surrounding recreation and historic attractions. It also hosts popular festivals and events including Art in Bloom Spring Art Show, Wheels & Wings, PotatoFest, and Dickens of a Christmas.

Visit Prince Gallitzin’s Loretto

Loretto Was the First English-Speaking Catholic Settlement in the U.S. West of the Allegheny Front!

Loretto, formerly the McGuire Settlement, was named after the Shrine of the Holy House in Loreto, Italy, by Father Demetrius Gallitzin, a former Russian Prince who renounced his royal upbringing, enrolled in seminary and became the first priest to receive all his seminary studies in the United States. Gallitzin, known as “The Apostle of the Alleghenies”, established the church and pastored the settlement in Loretto until his death in 1840. He is buried in an underground crypt with his heroic-sized statue standing atop

a monument next to the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel. He is currently under consideration for sainthood. Another famous Loretto resident was steel magnate, Charles Schwab. Born into poverty, Schwab was hired by Carnegie Steel of Pittsburgh when he was 17 and worked his way up to company president by the age of 35. Schwab contributed his financial resources significantly to the people of the Ebensburg/Loretto community financing the Carmelite Monastery and the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel.

Spend some time in Cresson

CRESSON WORKERS helped to fuel the Industrial Revolution. According to Sr. Anne Frances Pulling in her book “Around Cresson and the Alleghenies”, the town of Cresson was a “hub of commerce when the Pennsylvania Railroad established headquarters here with a roundhouse, machine shops and branch lines.” Besides railroading, Cresson industries included lumbering, coal mining, and coke yards. Laborers resided in company houses located within one mile of where high society had built mansions. The area’s natural beauty of lush greens and mountain springs served as an escape for the Pittsburgh elite. Several built residences here including J&L Steel icon, Benjamin Jones, and U.S. Steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie. Many affluent guests, including President Abraham Lincoln, visited the elaborate Mountain House. Situated on a hillside amongst several mountain springs and private cottages, the resort accommodated 900 affluent guests who vacationed and made business decisions here. Cresson is located along the Norfolk Southern Mainline of the former Pennsylvania Railroad, making it a popular destination for railfans! Cresson is located between Gallitzin and Cassandra, two of Cambria County’s train-watching hot spots.
