Our school gives parents multiple opportunities to learn about curriculum and programs and provide feedback. We have a PTO organization, an equity team, and a site improvement committee, all of which provide opportunities for parents to be involved. Our school sends weekly newsletters to parents and our website is updated regularly. The district provides two weekly newsletters to inform parents and the community about district initiatives, student and faculty awards, and logistical information. The district and school websites can be accessed by families that speak languages other than English. Parents are encouraged to attend the Back to School meeting, PTO events, and parent education meetings designed for them.
Our school works diligently to engage community members through our cultural events, PTO special events, equity team, and site improvement committee. Parents and community members support our school by volunteering in the classroom, volunteering for committees, and providing guidance and support in our equity, diversity, and inclusion work. LAKERIDGE JUNIOR HIGH Formally Waluga Jr. High
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students, Welcome to Lakeridge Junior High! We are delighted to be able to offer a challenging academic program along with many different elective course choices. Electives include both full-year music and world language programs and trimester long courses in drama, world languages, technology, writing, reading, science, and art. The courses in this catalog represent LJH’s continuing commitment to provide a strong middle level program for all students. We ask that parent and child review the catalog together and make selections that best fit current and future interests, talents, and goals. Please note that in the initial stages of the forecasting process, there is no way of predicting which classes will fill to capacity and which classes may have to be cancelled due to insufficient interest. It is, therefore, extremely important that you and your child fill in all of the spaces provided for class choices, including all alternate choices, as these may be the classes to which a student is assigned. It is also possible that the budget situation may cause changes in the courses Lakeridge Junior High is able to offer; however, we will not know the extent of those changes until much later in the scheduling process. So, please understand that while this catalog represents courses we hope to be able to offer, we may have to make adjustments to some course offerings after the District’s budget is finalized. If you have any questions about our forecasting process or these offerings, please do not hesitate to call our counseling department at 503-534-2343. We look forward to an exciting school year together! Sincerely,
Kurt Schultz Principal
Michael Esping Vice Principal
LAKERIDGE JUNIOR HIGH
MISSION STATEMENT The Lakeridge Junior High School community recognizes and addresses the unique intellectual, social-emotional, and physical needs of middle school students as they progress through the dynamic educational environment and the established district curricula. We Believe: All students can learn. The Lakeridge Junior High School Community encompasses students, parents, school staff, businesses, and other community members. An effective middle school requires teamwork among community members to promote a safe, caring learning environment.
Effective instruction must provide for individual differences in learning styles, rates, levels, and abilities and engage students in a variety of relevant and challenging academic experiences. Students must assume responsibility for learning, develop goalsetting skills and apply self-assessment techniques. The curricula must provide students with technological and research skills to support their success in a rapidly expanding world of knowledge.
Relationships built upon mutual respect, caring, understanding and recognition of achievement are the foundation for a successful LJHS school community.

Elementary Program The Lake Oswego School District has six elementary schools serving students in grades K-5; all are rated outstanding by the Oregon Department of Education. Enrollment at each school ranges from approximately 380 to 530 students. The instructional program has as its foundation the goal of continuous progress for students.Students in first/second grade and in third/fourth grade are taught in blended classrooms, with the goal of keeping students with the same teacher for two years. Blended classrooms have been an integral part of Lake Oswego's high-achieving elementary schools since the early 1990's. Children are taught at their instructional level, and curriculum is designed to provide opportunities for students to learn and achieve to their maximum capability. The elementary program is also supported by the following specialists and services: •TAG coordinator for talented and gifted students •Counselors •PE specialists •Music specialists •Reading and math specialists •Special Services department for students with special needs. The following programs and services are also offered to interested families: •Full day kindergarten (tuition based) •Extended day program for before and after school care (fee based) •Language immersion •LOSD Community School (extra-curricular enrichment classes, sports programs, camps) All elementary schools are fortunate to have active parent communities who volunteer in the classroom, serve on committees, and raise funds to support our schools. Parent volunteers also teach the highly-regarded Lake Oswego Art Literacy program in every elementary classroom throughout the school year.
Junior High Program Lake Oswego Junior High School and Lakeridge Junior High School provide an inquiry-based and integrated curriculum focused on higher level thinking skills, as well as a broad range of electives and extra-curricular opportunities. Attuned to the developmental needs of early adolescents, students are grouped into grade-level teams for block scheduling and maximum teacher support. LAKE OSWEGO SCHOOL DISTRICT Strategic Planning Outlook
Update on Economic Context & Variables for Lake Oswego Schools • State Funding:
•
• •
•
•
•
As expected, the state budget for education approved last spring produced a shortfall for the district of approximately $11 million for the 2011-13 biennium. The state budget is based on revenue forecasts that must be realized in order for schools to receive budgeted funding. Due to the slow recovery from the economic recession, state revenue forecasts continue to fall, which could impact district funding. The district has modeled shortfalls of $5.5 million for each year in the biennium (2011-12 and 2012-13). Foundation Fundraising: With the exceptional leadership of the Foundation Board of Directors, and the overwhelming support of the community, the Foundation raised $2.2 million for 2011-12. This outstanding effort allowed the district to avoid laying off teachers and to hire new teachers for 2011-12. Support from City of Lake Oswego: The Mayor and City Council approved financial support of $2 million for 2011-12. The district is extremely grateful to the Mayor, Council and city staff members for the difficult choices that were made to benefit our students. Local Option Levy Revenue: The local option levy raises revenue by taxing properties in the gap between real market value and assessed value. As that gap narrows for most properties, overall local option levy revenue decreases. This is known as compression. Compression on properties is increasing and will yield declining local option revenue. Contract negotiations for all Lake Oswego School District employees: New agreements were reached with all employee groups, effective July 1, 2011, that demonstrate the support of employees in helping the district address economic constraints. Employees will receive no cost of living increases and no step increases for the first year of the contract. For the second year (2012-13), potential cost of living increases would be conditional, requiring significant increases in district resources. Employees will also pay an increased share of the cost of medical benefits. Closure and reconfiguration of schools: The implementation of Scenario A-Bridge for 2011-12 (closure of Palisades Elementary) realized savings of $.85M. The full implementation of Scenario B for 2012-13 (closure of Uplands and Bryant, reconfiguration of junior highs to middle schools, annexing of Bryant to the Waluga facility) will save an estimated $2.3 million per year. Downsizing decisions regarding programs, services and operations: The school board and administration will continue to develop and evolve strategies over time to address the district’s financial challenges. Many variables affecting the district’s 2012-13 budget are as yet undetermined.

Reductions
x Based on current information, a minimum shortfall of $5.5M is anticipated for 2012-13. x Implementation of Scenario B will save $2.3M. x The district has been very successful in conserving resources and cutting costs. These savings have increased district cash reserves. The careful expenditure of these reserves over time to preserve instructional program and class size will be a strategic variable. x Other variables that will influence the amount of the district’s shortfall and the strategic responses available include the following: ? Stability of state revenue and budget for K-12 education ? Effect of compression on local option levy ? Foundation fundraising ? Continuation of some level of City support

District Goals
State Goals
Our mission is to be an inclusive and safe learning community with challenging opportunities that develop lifelong learners and contributing world citizens. Our student-centered approach ensures that each student receives the support and enrichment opportunities necessary so they can achieve their goals. The District’s strategic initiatives include: (1) an integrated approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion across the district, (2) creating and maintaining programs and interventions that support college and career success, (3) upgrades in facilities and infrastructure, (4) and a focus on communications and community relations.
The Oregon Department of Education is working in partnership with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% on-time, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

It Started With Iron
Lake Oswego has a long and rich history. Clackamas Indians were here when the first European explorers arrived. They were followed by an influx of settlers who arrived via the Oregon Trail. Among them was Albert Alonzo Durham who founded the town of Oswego in 1847. Durham named the town after his home of Oswego, New York. Durham established a saw mill which was Lake Oswego first. albeit short-lived industry. The area known as Old Town in Lake Oswego is the where our community was born. Old Town was platted in 1851Durham, and although he never registered the plat, the townsite eventually grew under the guidance of John C. Trullinger, who purchased Durham's land and sawmill in 1865. Old Town also grew with the iron industry between 1865 and 1894. The Oregon Iron Company operated from 1865 until it failed in 1876. The company employed about 80 men when the furnace was in full operation, and it built several cottages in Old Town for its workers. In 1877 two investors formed the Oswego Iron Company and sporadically operated the furnace, which produced a total of 18,500 tons of iron until financial troubles closed it in 1881. In 1882 the company was reorganized as the Oregon Iron and Steel Company. Under Simeon Reed, the company employed approximately 300 men at one time. Business boomed in the 1890, but it was short lived as ships began dumping imported iron on the docks in Portland. The iron had served as ballast and could be sold at a relatively low price. The depression of 1893 brought about the final closure of the plant in 1894. With the decline of the iron industry and the increased popularity of the lake as a recreation area, the residential area grew mainly to the west. The distinct boundaries of the Willamette River, the iron foundry, and the main road and commercial avenue of Oswego prevented Old Town from expanding much beyond its original borders. To learn more about the history of Lake Oswego visit the website of the Oswego Heritage Council here: http://www.oswegoheritage.org/ or the Lake Oswego Preservation Society here: http://www.lakeoswegohistoryonline.com/lo/Welcome.html.
