Steve Sovik - Building Revenue Engines That Turn Startups Into Market Leaders

For more than 25 years, Steve Sovik has helped some of the software industry's most promising companies transform ambitious ideas into scalable, high-growth businesses. As a go-to-market executive and revenue growth leader, he has built predictable sales organizations, developed repeatable revenue engines, and guided SaaS companies from their earliest stages through rapid expansion and successful exits. Throughout his career, Steve has earned a reputation for combining strategic thinking with hands-on execution, helping organizations not only accelerate revenue but establish the operational discipline required for long-term success.
Steve's journey into startup leadership was shaped by an early realization that innovation thrives where speed, ownership, and execution intersect. While many executives build careers inside established enterprises, Steve discovered that his greatest impact came from helping emerging companies challenge industry leaders and redefine markets. He was drawn to environments where every decision mattered, where strategies could be implemented quickly, and where talented teams could create lasting competitive advantages.
That mindset was developed during his 16-year tenure at Oracle, where he gained a world-class education in enterprise sales, operational excellence, and global business leadership. As Oracle's CRM On Demand business
competed against Salesforce during the early rise of cloud computing, Steve witnessed one of the most significant shifts in enterprise software. Buyers were no longer selecting technology based solely on feature lists. Ease of use, rapid deployment, and user adoption became equally important factors in purchasing decisions.
Leading Oracle's global CRM SaaS initiatives during this pivotal period presented a unique challenge. Oracle already had successful on-premise CRM solutions with broader functionality, making it difficult for sales teams to embrace a newer cloud-first offering. Rather than accepting the status quo, Steve built a data-driven business case using competitive losses, collaborated with sales leadership across the organization, and spent more than a year driving a strategic shift in positioning. Once the organization aligned behind the new approach, the business achieved 100 percent yearover-year growth for multiple consecutive years.
The experience fundamentally shaped Steve's philosophy on building startup sales organizations. Competing as a challenger brand required sharper positioning, disciplined qualification, executive-level selling, and an unwavering focus on differentiated value. Those lessons became the foundation of his leadership style and prepared him for the next chapter of his career.
In 2010, Steve joined Coupa when the company generated less than $1 million in annual recurring revenue. Over the following five and a half years, he played a key leadership role in scaling ARR beyond $100 million while expanding the sales organization from just three people to approximately one hundred. The company's rapid growth ultimately positioned Coupa for a successful public offering and established it as one of enterprise software's leading procurement platforms.
Steve repeated that success at Tipalti, where he led revenue growth from $2 million to $70 million in annual recurring revenue while expanding the global go-to-market organization from three employees to eighty-five. His ability to create scalable sales processes, develop high-performing leaders, and align
cross-functional teams consistently helped emerging software companies evolve into category leaders.
Throughout his career, Steve has served as Chief Revenue Officer and senior executive at innovative technology companies including Fairmarkit, PayEm, and Safebooks. In each role, he has focused on building predictable revenue models, strengthening enterprise sales execution, refining forecasting discipline, and aligning sales, marketing, product, and finance around shared growth objectives. Earlier in his career, he also closed major Fortune 100 accounts while leading Oracle's global CRM SaaS initiatives, giving him firsthand experience selling into some of the world's largest enterprises.
Beyond operating roles, Steve has contributed strategic guidance in the boardroom as a member of the Board of Directors for Determine Software, a publicly traded software company later acquired by Corcentric. His board experience complements his operating expertise by providing broader perspective on governance, growth strategy, and long-term value creation.
For Steve, however, building successful companies has always been about more than revenue. He believes sustainable growth begins with exceptional people. His approach to leadership centers on hiring individuals with character, curiosity, and coachability, then creating environments where accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning become competitive advantages. He invests heavily in developing future leaders, believing that the strongest organizations are built by managers who multiply talent rather than simply manage performance.
His leadership philosophy reflects the lessons accumulated over decades of scaling businesses. High-performing teams, in his view, are not created through individual star performers alone but through clear systems, shared purpose, disciplined execution, and a culture where every person understands how their work contributes to the company's mission. Whether building a startup from its earliest stages or leading organizations through periods of hypergrowth, Steve remains focused on creating repeatable processes that allow both people and businesses to perform at their highest level.
Steve holds a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from Santa Clara University, where he attended on both academic and athletic scholarship and earned varsity football letters. The discipline, resilience, and team-first mentality developed on the football field continue to influence his leadership style today.
After more than two decades of helping software companies scale, Steve remains energized by the same challenge that first drew him to startups: transforming potential into performance. For him, the excitement lies not simply in growing revenue, but in building organizations that can sustain success long after the initial breakthrough. It is this passion for innovation, execution, and leadership that continues to define his career and the companies fortunate enough to grow alongside him.
