Our Story

Established in memory of Ron Foley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in October of 2005, the Foundation bearing his name is dedicated to promoting early detection and, ultimately, finding a cure for the disease through ongoing research.

Inspiration for the first fundraising event - a Kentucky Derby party in 2009 - came when those closest to Ron in life felt they could harness the generosity of his spirit to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The day's contributions were donated to pancreatic cancer research in Ron's memory, and a tradition was born. Encouraged by the success of that initial Derby Day gathering, and with the support of family, friends and dedicated volunteers, Ron's widow, Barbara Foley, formed the Ron Foley Foundation. Today, this 501(c)(3) charitable organization sponsors a series of annual events to build awareness and raise funds for research, education and patient assistance.

While we recognize that we can't win the fight against pancreatic cancer without raising funds for research and awareness, we also know that patients and their families are under tremendous financial pressure. Imagine receiving the devastating news that you, your spouse or another loved one may have pancreatic cancer. Your world is changed forever. You quickly become engulfed in the medical system. Financial resources are soon stretched to the limit. You may even find you've exhausted your savings, and the stress becomes unbearable. That's why we created Ron's Rescue Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for essential needs that will otherwise go unmet.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Thank you for making 2018 yet another incredible year for the Ron Foley Foundation. Our remarkable volunteers, staff and sponsors continue to help us strengthen our reach and advance our mission to fund pancreatic cancer medical research; to raise public awareness of this deadly disease; and, to provide direct financial aid to pancreatic cancer patients in need. This Annual Report will introduce you to just a few of these wonderful people who have been critical to our success. They hove helped us, inspired us and we owe them on immense debt of gratitude. The 11th Annual Ron's Run for the Roses, our keystone fundroiser, was a major success in every way. From the perfect spring weather on Moy 5th to the nail-biter race finish it was a spectacular day at Folly Form in Simsbury. We welcomed 475 guests and raised $335,000, of which $47,000 was earmarked for patients in need through Ron's Rescue. This

year's attendance and event revenues both set records when compared to all prior years. And on a personal note, seven of my nine grandchildren made it to the event - a new family record! While at the event, I was struck by the number of new faces I hod the pleasure of meeting. In fact, first-time attendees at Ron's Run mode up 45% of our guests. Many of these new guests, such as the Mistretta, Burke and Benjamin families, hove become incredible new supporters and volunteers, growing our base to help us sustain our work. This post year the Foundation was pleased to grant $45,000 to Hartford HealthCare to provide funding to uninsured pancreatic â„˘ cancer patients for IMPACT testing. With the help of our Medical Advisory Boord, we recently approved a grant for $90,000 to Western Connecticut Health Network to further their study of the Role of Non-Coding

In addition, the Foundation provided a record $63,500 in Ron's Rescue grants to pancreatic cancer patients throughout New York, New Jersey and New England. Your support continues to allow us to pursue a higher quality of life for pancreatic cancer patients and medical research seeking early detection methods and more effective treatments. We ore profoundly grateful for the public trust given to us by our donors and supporters. While seeking to advance the mission of the Foundation, we strive to be good stewards of your gifts by carefully managing our costs and overhead. Meeting Superheroes The Foundation was honored to be invited to participate in the 16th annual Whittingham Cancer Center Walk & Run on June 1, 2019 at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. At our information table, we had the opportunity to meet cancer patients, fomilies, caregivers, care teams and supporters - all superheroes.

Ask the Experts We are thrilled to continue to sponsor the "Ask the Experts" forums on pancreatic cancer with physicians from Hartford Hospital. During this fiscal year, we held two in November 2018 and two in May 2019 welcoming more than 100 people. We are proud to provide the funding for this educational platform for patients, caregivers and medical staff to learn more about pancreatic cancer.

Outrun Pancreatic Cancer For the fourth year in a row, the Ron Foley Foundation was honored to be an official charity of the Eversource Hartford Marathon on October 13, 2018. We want to thank the thirteen Team RFF runners who ran on behalf of the Foundation and the twenty volunteers cheering on the runners and those at Charity Village manning the information table on a very cold and windy day. And thank you to all of the donors that helped us raise $8,390 at this event.

For the fourth year, the Foundation participated in the Travelers Championship Birdies for Charity program. Partners Around the World The World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition held its annual meeting in May 2019 in Coral Gables, Florida, welcoming 110 members from 49 pancreatic cancer patient advocacy groups from 21 countries and 6 continents. As a member, our attendance and participation help us build upon our relationships with others across the globe, who shore like goals in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Successfully pulling off an event like the annual Ron's Run for the Roses involves a lot of moving parts, and it's not just what you see on the day of the event. There are any number of permits that need to be obtained from the Town of Simsbury, where Folly Farm - the event site - is located.

That's where Kevin Dowd, in-house counsel for UBS Realty Investors in Hartford and a Ron Foley Foundation volunteer, comes in. Kevin took over from Jim Eder, who Cathy and Kevin Dowd handled all the permitting for Ron's Ron when it moved to Folly Farm from Barbara Foley's West Hartford backyard. "It's a fair amount of work," Kevin says. "Luckily, Jim taught me everything he knows." He goes on to explain that you need permits for the event itself as well as for any structures, all alcohol and food being served as well as from the Town Fire Marshal. All told, it takes about four months to accomplish everything. "I took about six trips to see various people in the town offices." It may seem like a lot, but Kevin knows that each of the officials he works with have their own processes that need to be followed. "Their goal is to keep everyone safe, and of course that's ours, too," he says. "The Town is good to work with and I'm happy to do it." Kevin and his wife Cathy attended their first Ron's Run about six years ago when their good friends Tom and Shevon Hickey invited them to be their guests. "My parents taught me the importance of giving back from an early age, so I've been volunteering for a variety of different organizations for most of my life," he explains. "I was impressed by the event and by the Foundation right from the start," he says. "And frankly I was shocked how much they raised on that one day." So when he was approached to take over the permitting, he said yes. Although he's only been volunteering for the Foundation for a relatively short time, Kevin has already done a lot. He handled all the permitting for the new Ron's Raffle for the Roses, which will send the winner and a guest to the 2020 Kentucky Derby. He's also arranged for UBS Realty Investors to donate their Yard Goats suite for the Foundation's volunteer celebration at a game in 2018 and 2019. "I got involved because of the commitment and professionalism of the volunteers, and because of the vision and enthusiasm of the leadership." Downey Knapp and her husband Whit were neighbors of Barbara and Ron Foley when they all lived on Wyndwood Road in West Hartford. "We raised our children together," she says. "And let me tell you - Ron was a special magnet for all the neighborhood kids. My kids just adored him." So it's no surprise that when Barbara held her very first Derby Day fundraiser in her Stoner Drive back yard, the Knapps were by her side. "I remember thinking at the time it was so much work," Downey says. "I honestly wondered how long we'd really be able to keep it up." Laughing, she adds, "Little did I know!" That was more than 10 years ago. "Barbara's drive is just so huge - she wouldn't let go," explains Downey. "So we all hung on with her." Originally, Downey was in charge of gathering auction items and preparing baskets for the day of the event. "I quickly realized this simply wasn't my strength" she says. But she wasn't really sure where she could make the most impact. "That's when Barbara found me futzing with the flower arrangements at a friend's party and asked me to take over the flowers for Ron's Run for the Roses." Today Downey heads a committee that works together to come up with new ideas for Barbara Foley and each year's event. "I love arranging, it's been an absolute ball," she says. "Barbara has a D owney K,napp special talent for recognizing people's strengths - it's part of her magic." It's also one of the reasons volunteers not only keep coming back, but also bring more people into the fold year after year. Of course, Ron's Run is really just a small part of what the Foundation does. There are several other events they hold throughout the year, including putting together a team to run in the Hartford Marathon each year. "I'm no runner, but I run in the SK every year," says Downey. "Believe me, I wouldn't do that for any other organization!" The money they raise goes to help patients and their families, fund research and raise awareness.

Working closely with Drs. Peter Yu, Jessica Clement, and Andy Seiner of Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute, the Ron Foley Foundation has funded both critical pancreatic cancer medical research, educational seminars and symposiums over the course of the last several years. This includes a recent $45,000 grant ™ (Integrated Mutation for IMPACT Profiling of Actionable Cancer Targets) testing. "We are partnering with Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) to analyze tumor genes," explains Dr. Seiner. "Taking a closer look at the mutations that are occurring in the tumor cells can help us in two ways." First and foremost, IMPACT testing helps identify if a patient's cancer matches to a drug undergoing evaluation in an MSK clinical trial. If it does, the patient may have an opportunity to enroll in the trial. "We're also hoping to gain a better understanding of what has driven tumors to become malignant," Dr. Seiner says. Dr. Yu continues, "What's unique about IMPACT testing is that the patient's genomic information, with their written consent, is de-identified and goes into a database for MSK scientists to analyze and share with researchers around the world." That, he says, doesn't typically happen in most commercial labs. Dr. Clement says the grant, which allows Hartford HealthCare to cover the cost for testing, which is not usually covered by medical insurance, is a wonderful tool. "It supports patient care as well as research." The Foundation also funded a seminar in June, Current and Emerging Directions in Pancreas Cancer. Eileen O'Reilly M.D. - an

internationally-recognized expert in pancreatic cancer from MSK - spoke to a room full of 125 medical and healthcare professionals about both current research and developments in patient care. "There were a lot of questions and dialogue," says Dr. Seiner "It was a really engaging and informative session." Each of the three physicians has been involved with the Foundation outside of work as well. Dr. Yu was the honorary medical chair for the 2018 Ron's Run for the Roses and was elected to the Foundation board the same year. "I've only been in Connecticut for three years," he says. "But I quickly saw and respected the Foundation's desire to have an impact on people in the local community touched by pancreatic cancer." Dr. Seiner, on the other hand, has seen the Foundation grow and change over its 12 year history. "I had the privilege of being one of Ron's physicians," he says. "And was lucky enough to see firsthand how they've made a difference in people's lives and in research." Today Dr. Seiner serves in the critical role as Chair of the Foundation's Medical Advisory Board, which reviews medical research grants from various institutions and makes recommendations to the Foundation's board on what to fund. "I became aware of the Foundation when I was working at UConn Health Cancer Center, where they've also been instrumental in providing funding," says Dr. Clement. "But I was also drawn to them because while what they do is important to my work - it is also very personal to me because I lost my grandmother to pancreatic cancer," she explains.

As a current member of the Medical Advisory Board, Dr. Clement says it was the Foundation's uniqueness and success, which is founded in their sincere warmth, empathy and generosity of spirit, that made her want to be part of the organization in some way.

Mike Mistretta and his sons, Jackson and Travis, lost their wife and mother, Carol, in March of 2019 - seventeen years after her original diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. "Carol was first diagnosed in 2002 and it was catastrophic," says Mike. Luckily, however, she underwent a successful Whipple procedure. "Her doctors were cautiously optimistic that the cancer was gone, but seven years later it returned Travis, Carol, Mike and and metastasized to her lungs." Doctors were able to keep Carol's cancer from Jackson Mistretta spreading for several years, but everything changed in 2017, says Mike. "We got the devastating news that the cancer was in her larynx and aorta, and it was inoperable." Despite the last six months of her life being incredibly draining and difficult, Mike says his wife never once complained. "Carol was just simply a remarkable woman," he says. "She was an incredible mother, a loyal friend and a loving companion." She even continued to work right up until the day she passed away. In the midst of this, Kevin Dowd - who works with Mike at UBS - told him about the Ron Foley Foundation. As Carol got sicker, she decided it was just the charity she wanted people to make donations to in her memory. "That was Carol", he says. "Always thinking about how she could help other people, never putting herself first." That's why although he was overwhelmed by the amount people donated in Carol's name, he wasn't altogether surprised. So with his wife's never-ending selflessness in mind, Mike decided to attend the 2019 Ron's Run for the Roses and start learning more about the Foundation. "The event was amazing and I met so many kind and generous people," he says. "They have a very noble goal, to help fight a disease that doesn't get much funding and attention as higher profile cancers. What I didn't know is what the Foundation does for people facing financial hardships while they are going through what our family did. We didn't experience that, but I can't even imagine how devastating it must be."

More than $10,000 was donated by family, friends and business colleagues in memory of Carol Mistretta to the Ron Foley Foundation

Don Benjamin was diagnosed with Stage 4 inoperable pancreatic cancer in April of 2018. His best option was a heavy course of chemotherapy, which came along with a host of complications and side effects. "I ended up in the hospital being treated for high blood pressure, blood clots in my lungs and legs, 12 pounds of fluid in my chest, a MRSA infection and air hunger." He also lost his appetite and despite being fed intravenously for 6 months, he lost 50 pounds. "It's bad enough to have cancer and be so sick," Don says, "but the expenses you don't foresee that aren't covered by insurance are just devastating." He Joan Perkins, Sharon and Don estimates that he and his wife Sharon have spent close to $24,000 out-ofBenjamin and Ingrid Kania pocket since his diagnosis. Thankfully, Don's Social Worker, Joan Perkins, at the Middlesex Health Cancer Center, told the Benjamins about the Ron Foley Foundation and its Ron's Rescue Fund. "We applied and they answered so quickly and generously," says Sharon. "It helped us pay some of our bills." The couple also started attending some of Hartford Healthcare's Ask the Experts sessions the Foundation funds along with Don's daughter Jennifer and son Scott. Here, they say, they learned that working with the palliative group is not about death - it's about life. "We were so thankful, we knew we wanted to do more for the Foundation," says Don. But when he was asked to speak at the 2019 Ron's Run for the Roses, he was unsure. "Then I realized all these people had done something to help me. They donated their time, auction items and money," he says. "I knew I had to do it." Sharon says not only did he get a standing ovation, but as he was leaving the stage a man from the audience approached him. "He hugged him and thanked him. It was just so uplifting." Today Don says he's feeling great. His appetite returned after going to their timeshare in Aruba and he's had an amazing 58% reduction in the size of his tumor since beginning treatment.

Inspired

Ed Blumenthal moved in next door to Barbara and Ron Foley in 1998. "Over time, we got to be pretty good friends," he says. So Ed found himself at the first Derby Day gathering, which was held in Barbara's backyard and is now known as Ron's Run for the Roses. "I've never seen such a grass roots endeavor take off the way the Ron Foley Foundation has," he says. "I think what makes it special is the people." His wife, Carolyn McKenna, agrees. "Once you get involved, you feel like family." Today Carolyn, who lost her uncle, George McKenna, to pancreatic cancer serves on the Foundation's board. That's why when his college roommate invited him to take part in a hut-to-hut back country ski trip in Colorado he began to wonder Ed Blumenthal and Carolyn McKenna if there was a way he could use the experience to raise money and awareness for the Foundation. It was Carolyn's best friend, he says, who came up with the name Purple Peak Challenge. That first year he raised $21,000 from family and friends. "I won't lie, the trip and the fundraising were both a lot of work," Ed says. So when his former roommate suggested a 2019 trip, he was on the fence. After talking with Barbara, though, he decided it was something he wanted to do. "This time around there were more tech savvy people working in the Foundation who helped me use social media more effectively and keep on top of donations." He even had Carolyn film and post a video while he was training in Vermont to show potential supporters how he was preparing and tell them a bit about the cause. Ed brought in even more in donations - bringing his total funds raised to more than $43,000. The 2019 trip did not go as smoothly as the first, however. "Colorado was hit with daily snowfalls from about mid-February to mid-March," he says. As a result, avalanche danger was very high and it became clear they wouldn't be able to follow their planned route. "We ended up doing three day trips instead, which was completely different yet just as strenuous and beautiful."

A Daily Reminder

Many of Ron Foley Foundation supporters and volunteers wear purple bracelets as a daily reminder of the urgency in raising funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer. Tony Sisti, a Foundation volunteer and Ambassador, began wearing two bracelets so that when someone asked him what they were for, he could take one off and hand it to them as he told them the story behind the Foundation. It caught on - and now others do the same, including Ed Blumenthal. "The physical act of giving someone that bracelet creates an intimate connection," says Ed. "It makes them feel they are part of a community - and, of course, they are."

Unlike Churchill Downs, the weather was never an issue for the 11th Annual Ron's Run for the Roses. Nothing but sunny skies greeted our 47 5 guests as they walked the New Country Motor Cars red carpet to enter our spectacular white tent and a sea of purple! As in the past, the spirit of hope and remembrance filled the air. What was especially inspiring were the many new faces. More than 45% of our guests were attending Ron's Run for the first time. With everyone's enthusiastic support, we grossed $335,000, including $47,000 for our Ron's Rescue Fund, bringing the Foundation's total revenues to more than $2.6 million since our first Ron's Run for the Roses in 2009. Our record-breaking success was a result of higher ticket sales, 200 fantastic silent auction items, the Monarch Jewelers Bling contest, and the sale of HALO Bolts and chargers. Without a doubt, a significant factor of the event's success was the dynamic duo of New Country's Senior Vice

President, Tim Parker, and our event emcee and Foundation Board Member, Joe Furey, who together delivered a hysterical, high-bidding live auction. One of the highlights of the day was the announcement by our Presenting Sponsor, New Country Motor Cars Group, that they would once again be Presenting Sponsor of the 12th Annual Ron's Run for the Roses on Saturday, May 2, 2020. We cherish our partnership with New Country. They have become our mentors and friends. The Foundation could not be more proud or excited about our alliance for the seventh year in a row. The 11th Annual Ron's Run for the Roses could not have happened without the dedication and hard work of our talented volunteers, many of who have been with us for several years, offering expertise and leadership that is priceless. Thank you, also, to our very generous sponsors, donors, and vendors who make this day so incredibly memorable. Together you are making a difference!

David and Debbie Beauregard enjoyed the day! David lost his brother, Alan, to pancreatic cancer in 2018 and Debbie helped with the event's silent auction.

"I remember the first Kentucky Derby gathering we had in Barbara's backyard to celebrate Ron's memory," says Kathleen Doxer, Ron Foley's sister. "Barbara's father started taking bets as sort of a goof - and when my cousin's wife won, she announced she was going to donate her winnings to pancreatic cancer." It was an impromptu event, the betting was an impromptu addition to the afternoon and the donation was an impromptu decision. And those were the seeds that grew into Ron's Run for the Roses. A family affair from the beginning, Kathleen and her sister Linda Renzulli contributed their time and expertise even though they didn't live in the area. Kathleen, owner of Frugal Fannie's - a well-known fashion and shoe warehouse in Westwood, MA - lives in the Boston area while Linda, now retired, lives in Idaho with her husband, Phil.

"Linda took on the task of decorating," says Kathleen. "She has a great eye and created a rose blanket for the first gathering. For years after she also did all the flower arrangements as the event got larger and moved to Folly Farm." That's not where the sisters' creative input stopped. "Kathleen is an amazing graphic artist," Linda says. "She designed the Ron's Run logo as well as most of the artwork for the Foundation's marketing materials and signage." In those early days, Barbara was donating proceeds to the National Pancreas Foundation, explains Kathleen. "At some point, she realized she could build something that would support the local community instead." That's when she established the Ron Foley Foundation in 2010. "Ron was well-respected and well-known in West Hartford as well as the local insurance industry," Kathleen says. Linda agrees, adding that Barbara and Ron had a wide circle of friends who came together to help her turn this small backyard celebration of Ron's life into the impactful organization it is today. "She put together an incredible team of volunteers that just continues to grow." Both the sisters say they are astounded by what Barbara has done in Ron's memory. "I think I speak for Linda when I say we really looked up to our brother," says Kathleen. "He was handsome, brilliant and funny he just had a real love of life." Not only that, she says, he was known for his generosity. "He shared whatever he had and he was very good to his sisters." Linda agrees. "We were just devastated when we lost Ron, and to have his legacy go on in this way - by supporting education and research as well as those touched by this horrible disease - is just so meaningful." That's why in addition to serving as Board members for several years, the sisters also continue to support the Foundation financially.

CREATIVE GLOBAL CUISINE

Russell and Marie Pryzbek started their business, Russell's Creative Global Cuisine, in 1982. "Ron and Barbara Foley were clients," Russell says. "As time went on, they became our good friends." So when Barbara asked if they'd be interested in catering a Kentucky Derby gathering in her backyard 12 years ago - he said absolutely. For that first afternoon, Russell and his team prepared food for about 60 people. In 2019, they fed close to 475. With clients from Fishers Island, NY to Quechee, VT - Russell's Creative Global Cuisine considers every need, being careful to provide vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options. "We started with pretty traditional Southern fare, but over the years have started to branch out a little bit," he explains. Anyone who has ever attended Ron's Run for the Roses knows how spectacular the food is, but Russell says he couldn't do it without the help of his dedicated team - many who have been with him for 15 years or longer - as well as the mobile kitchen Taylor Rental supplies. "That's really been a key part of our catering success at the event." While Russell says he's always felt the work the Ron Foley Foundation does is important, it really hit home this year when the company lost a colleague - Richard Worth - to pancreatic cancer. "I called him my roundsperson extraordinaire," Russell says. "He did everything, from making deliveries, to breaking down events, to washing dishes - you name it. He was just one of those people who would give you the shirt off his back and not ask for anything in return." Richard had been working on Ron's Run for the last six years, so he got to know the value of their work as well. "It's been very rewarding for me to watch Ron's Run grow through the years," Russell says. "The minute we walk into the tent, even before the guests arrive in their hats and outfits, there's just an aura of sincerity that surrounds the whole event. And that starts with Barbara."
