Our Story

Ron’s Rescue Fund Established in memory of Ron Foley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in October of 2005, the Foundation bearing his name is dedicated to promoting early detection and, ultimately, finding a cure through ongoing research.
Inspiration for the first fundraising event – a Kentucky Derby party in 2009 – came when those closest to Ron in life felt they could harness the generosity of his spirit to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The day’s contributions were donated to pancreatic cancer research in Ron’s memory, and a tradition was born. Encouraged by the success of that initial Derby Day gathering, and with the support of family, friends and dedicated volunteers, Ron’s widow, Barbara Foley, formed The Ron Foley Foundation. Today, this 501(c)(3) charitable organization sponsors a series of annual events to build awareness and raise funds for research, education and patient assistance.
While we recognize that we can’t win the fight against pancreatic cancer without raising funds for research and awareness, we also know that patients and their families are under tremendous financial pressure. Imagine receiving the devastating news that you, your spouse or another loved one may have pancreatic cancer. Your world is changed forever. You quickly become engulfed in the medical system. Financial resources are soon stretched to the limit. You may even find you’ve exhausted your savings, and the stress becomes unbearable. That’s why we created Ron’s Rescue Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for essential needs that will otherwise go unmet.
Our Mission Fund medical research leading to improved diagnosis, more effective treatment and a cure for pancreatic cancer. Promote public awareness of pancreatic cancer through education. Reduce human suffering caused by pancreatic cancer by giving direct financial aid to pancreatic cancer patients.
A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear friends, This past year the Ron Foley Foundation hit a fundraising milestone and developed new partnerships allowing us to further our strong commitment to pancreatic cancer research, awareness and patient aid. Our 9th annual Ron’s Run for the Roses was our most successful event ever thanks to our generous sponsors, donors and vendors as well as through the tireless efforts of our volunteers. We welcomed 475 guests and raised more than $300,000, truly earning Hartford Magazine’s “Best Charity Event” of 2017. I know you’ll enjoy the beautiful pictures from that spectacular day. The Foundation is always developing more third-party fundraisers to expand our year round revenues. In this report we cover our very enthusiastic Team Foley at the Hartford Marathon, our participation in the Travelers Championship Birdies for Charity, and the unexpected opportunities to team with the Ansonia High School Honor Society, who voted to support the Foundation through various fundraising efforts. These same wonderful students earned community service hours at Ron’s Run for the Roses assisting our cleanup crew. In addition (please indulge me) there is my granddaughter, Julia, who asked her friends for no gifts for her
11th birthday, but for donations to the Ron Foley Foundation in memory of the grandfather she never had the chance to meet. All of these events, partnerships and efforts contributed to us supporting two local research projects. In July we approved a $70,000 grant to Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN) to support “Detection of Noninvasive Biomarkers for the Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Response to Treatment in Pancreatic Cancer.” This past year the Foundation also approved a grant of $53,500 to continue our support of the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute’s Pancreatic Cyst Registry and their educational program. The Foundation is passionate about raising awareness of the disease through education both to the general public and to medical professionals. In November we were proud to sponsor two dynamic and wellattended pancreatic cancer education panels with WCHN. In addition, Hartford HealthCare hosted two more of the popular “Ask the Experts” sessions. Through our collaboration with Dr. Pramod Srivastava, Ph.D., M.D. Professor, Director, Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at UConn Health, we sponsored a lecture, hosting internationally renowned

cancer immunotherapy and translational research expert, Dr. Robert Vonderheide, Director of the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Of course, helping people remains a key focus for us. Ron’s Rescue has continued to provide financial assistance to pancreatic cancer patients throughout New England, New Jersey and New York. I’m proud to report that we have distributed a total of $151,000, including $41,000 in 2017, to patients in need, many of which have become our friends. All are our inspiration. The Foundation’s success depends on your support and the dedication of our volunteers. I hope that you enjoy meeting some of these wonderful people in this annual report. You will quickly see how we have been able to achieve so much in just nine short years.
WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED Medical Research Grants Awarded by the Ron Foley Foundation: $291,500 to the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center at Hartford Hospital, facilitating the work on a pancreatic cyst registry, as well as several educational and awareness events noted below. $75,000 to the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at UConn Health to fund the research project entitled “Genomics Driven Immunomic Analysis of Human Pancreatic Cancer.” $119,500 to Western Connecticut Health Network for a pancreatic cancer research study focused on “The Role of Non-coding RNAs in the Diagnosis, Prognosis and Response to Treatment in Pancreatic Cancer.”
Public Awareness and Education The Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to the National Pancreas Foundation for its educational symposium. Since 2013, the Foundation and Hartford Hospital have teamed together to sponsor multiple pancreatic health education seminars offered free of charge to the general public in the greater Hartford community. The Foundation has been a major sponsor of three Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute’s Physician’s Education Symposia. In 2016, the Foundation teamed with Verastem, Inc. to sponsor two public education events with Western Connecticut Health Network in the Danbury/Westport area. Ron’s Run for the Roses was voted the “Best Charity Event” for 2017 by Hartford Magazine readers and supporters The Foundation was acknowledged at the September UConn versus Temple soccer game in memory of beloved UConn soccer coach Joe Morrone, who passed away from pancreatic cancer in September 2015. In October 2016, the Foundation was entered as an Official Charity of the Eversource Hartford Marathon for the first time. Team RFF runners and volunteers raised more than $9,100 to “Outrun Pancreatic Cancer.” In 2017, UConn Health hosted a lecture by a guest expert in the field of immunology for medical professionals and medical students, sponsored by the Foundation.
Direct Patient Aid Since 2012, the Ron’s Rescue Fund has provided financial assistance to patients fighting pancreatic cancer to help alleviate financial burdens. From July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, the Foundation has raised $42,000 for the Ron’s Rescue Fund and has granted more than $33,000 to pancreatic cancer patients across New England, New York and New Jersey.
WHERE WE ARE HEADING With your continued support we will strive to: Continue to fund research projects committed to early detection, more effective treatment and cure of pancreatic cancer. Facilitate a collaborative partnership between major Connecticut hospitals, cancer centers and research facilities to pursue shared research of pancreatic cancer. Aggressively seek increased donations to the Ron’s Rescue Fund so that we can give financial aid to Connecticut pancreatic cancer patients and to continue to help many more patients throughout New England, New York and New Jersey. Continue to fund an annual lecture series for the general public and medical professionals featuring presenters with expertise in pancreatic cancer. Collaborate with other pancreatic cancer organizations across the country and internationally who share our goals of improving diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer and ultimately finding a cure. Create a website with the input of all major cancer centers in Connecticut to help pancreatic cancer patients find medical research programs, clinical trials, educational resources and financial aid throughout Connecticut. Form a Medical Advisory Board to guide and oversee our interests in medical research. Make the 10th annual Ron’s Run for the Roses the best ever.

Ansonia Goes Purple Thank you to Ansonia High School’s National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society for raising awareness of pancreatic cancer in November and December. This amazing group of students sold purple bracelets and their own designed purple pens and pencils to raise $321. They also spoke about the Ron Foley Foundation at sporting events, parent teacher conferences and at the city’s holiday tree lighting ceremony in December. Go Chargers!
Outrun Pancreatic Cancer The Ron Foley Foundation was honored to be an official charity of the Eversource Hartford Marathon on October 8, 2016. With more than 20 volunteers cheering on our 13 runners, Team RFF raised $9,260.

Caring
Judie Goldenthal, a former teacher at Norfeldt Elementary School in West Hartford, learned about the Ron Foley Foundation from her colleague Mary Miesmer. “Mary and her husband are longtime Foley family friends,” Judie explains. “They attended the first Ron’s Run for the Roses in Barbara’s backyard, and invited me to come along the next year.” That was 2007, the first time the event was held at Folly Farm, and Judie was so impressed she knew immediately she wanted to be involved. So, for the next six years she worked alongside Mary and others on the Auction Committee.
In 2016, as planning for the ninth annual Ron’s Run was getting underway, Judie – now retired – decided to do more. “I had the honor of being one of the Event Chairs,” says Judie. “I got to work closely with the generous sponsors who help make Ron’s Run the spectacular event it is.” Her husband Rick, who owns Camera Bar in Hartford, also became a sponsor for the event. “We felt it was a great way to give back to the organization.”

While the Foundation has grown to include other events, Judie says their mission has never changed. “It’s what I love best about them. Barbara set out to help people suffering from pancreatic cancer and to help researchers work toward earlier detection. Most of what we raise goes directly to those goals.” Today the Foundation’s reach extends beyond the Hartford community to all of Connecticut, something Judie credits to Barbara and Executive Vice President Jennifer Loughran. “I’ve never met people like Barbara and Jennifer, they are the heart and soul of this organization” says Judie. “They care so much, you just want to be part of it.” On February 7, 2017, the Ron Foley Foundation launched its annual lecture series with “Unlocking the Power of the Immune System to Treat Cancer.” Hosted by Dr. Pramod Srivastava, Director of UConn Health’s Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center and sponsored by the Foundation – more than 50 physicians, professors, researchers and medical students gathered to hear featured speaker Dr. Robert Vonderheide, Director of the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Hanna Wise Professor in Cancer Research at the University of Pennsylvania Perlman School of Medicine. Dr. Jessica Clement, Assistant Professor of Medicine, and Dr. Jeffrey Wasser, Assistant Dr. Robert Vonderheide Clinical Professor of Medicine, both at the Neag Cancer Center, attended. According to Dr. Wasser, the seminar provided an excellent overview of pancreatic cancer and its interplay with the immune system. “Dr. Vonderheide’s research has given us a much more optimistic outlook for the future,” he says. “After many decades of minimal progress in managing pancreatic cancer, I believe we’ll make significant strides in the next five to 10 years.” Dr. Clement agrees. “People like Dr. Vonderheide are moving the treatment paradigm forward. To see the world of immunotherapy zeroing in on pancreatic cancer is exciting and promising.” That’s the most meaningful part, she says, because she’s able to honestly tell her patients there are new clinical trials and treatments on the horizon. “Making a difference may not always mean curing someone, but simply being present for them and their families – giving them hope. That’s what Dr. Vonderheide’s research is doing, and by sponsoring this seminar, it’s what the Ron Foley Foundation does as well.” With a grandmother who passed away from pancreatic cancer, Dr. Clement feels a special connection to the Foundation. That, she says, and the fact that they put their money behind their mission. “They have a passion for helping people and for supporting the science and research necessary for early diagnosis and new treatments. They just have great perspective, and I’m happy to support them professionally and personally.”
Commitment
Leadership Carolyn L. McKenna, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN), was introduced to the Ron Foley Foundation when she was dating her husband, Ed Blumenthal – an active volunteer and supporter. Having lost her godfather and uncle, George McKenna, to pancreatic cancer, Carolyn also got involved. She attended the 2nd annual Ron’s Run for the Roses and later joined the Foundation’s Board.

When Carolyn began working at WCHN, she soon discovered that not only did the organization have a research institute, but also that Dr. Richard Frank, Director of Clinical Cancer Research, had a passion for cancer prevention and detection in general and pancreatic cancer in particular. “I’m an oncologist in practice and see a wide range of cancers,” says Dr. Frank. “But for some reason, I tend to grow closer to my pancreatic cancer patients. I felt compelled to honor them in a way that would be a game changer.” Carolyn knew the Foundation was looking to support innovative research projects throughout Connecticut, and felt they would be a good match for WCHN. Working with Grace Linhard, Chief Development Officer for WCHN, Carolyn arranged a tour of the research institute followed by a meeting with Dr. Frank. “It was clear from the start how knowledgeable and committed these people are,” says Dr. Frank. Grace agrees, saying it was exciting to see them realize how they could be supporting one another. “We submitted our first research proposal and grant request, The Role of Non-coding RNAs in the Diagnosis, Prognosis, and Response to Treatment in Pancreatic Cancer, to the Foundation shortly after that initial meeting.” The study, now in its second year, focuses on finding blood-based markers – especially using microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers in the blood – for early detection or
guided treatment and prognosis of pancreatic cancer. “Our goal is to have at least 50 patients in the study,” Dr. Frank explains. They have roughly 40 now and are currently analyzing the miRNAs in participants’ blood. “It will probably take another year to get solid, reproducible results and we’re hopeful our findings will help save lives.” With funding so difficult to come by, Dr. Frank says the Foundation has been a Godsend. “Their grants are a tremendous help, and we couldn’t do the research without them.” Grace also appreciates that the Foundation is local. “Most of the grant writing we do is for corporations and large national foundations,” she says. “To work with a Connecticut-based organization established by a family impacted by pancreatic cancer is truly special. And because there’s such a personal connection, they can see firsthand the impact they’ve had. There’s really nothing more magical than that.” According to Dr. Frank, the Foundation brings a human touch to the research. “They are unique in that they are still driven by their mission. They are committed to distributing the money they raise to help people – both through research like ours and by providing direct support to patients and their families.” For Carolyn, seeing the relationship grow has been particularly heartwarming. “WCHN approaches their research with the same passion that the Foundation manages their work,” she says. “I’m so happy I was able to bring these two organizations together.”
Passion
According to Michael Foley, Ron’s son, his dad had a great love for cars. “Whether it was American muscle, a souped-up Jeep or smooth German engineering – his favorite way to spend a Sunday was what he called ‘tire-kicking’ with me.” In those days dealerships weren’t open on Sundays, so the two would walk around looking at new models, bonding as father and son. “These are some of my fondest childhood memories,” he says. “it just seems right to have one of his favorite brands – Mercedes – and dealerships – New Country – play such an instrumental role in supporting the Ron Foley Foundation.” With three distinct dealerships in Hartford including Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Mini Cooper, New Country became a major sponsor of Ron’s Run for the Roses in 2014. That same year they hosted the Foundation’s Put Your Purple On awareness event at their dealership, which they’ve done each November since in recognition of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month as well as sharing ideas to raise additional funds. Tim Parker, Vice President at New Country, says working with the Foundation just makes sense for the dealership. “We like that all the money raised goes right to the people they are trying to help – whether through direct financial assistance to patients and families, funding area research programs and sponsoring local educational series.” Steve Dunham, General Manager for New Country Mercedes Benz, agrees. “I got involved about two years ago, and I was amazed when I attended the first Ron’s Run.” He says he expected a well-organized, high-class event based on what he knew about working with Barbara Foley and Jennifer Loughran. “Listening to patients, researchers and doctors share their experiences about how the Foundation helped them, however, was just so inspiring. They really make a difference in people’s lives.”

Impact Ed Budd met Ron Foley at The Travelers Insurance Company, where he served as chief executive from 1976 to 1994. “What stood out about Ron right from the beginning was that he was a straight shooter,” says Ed. “Because of that he was a very well-respected, powerful executive leader and a great support to many people – including me.” In return, Ed says he would do most anything to show support for Ron. And that’s why he initially became a donor to the Ron Foley Foundation. He continues, however, because of Barbara
Foley’s stewardship. “The torch that Barbara picked up and has carried so far is extremely impressive,” he explains. “I think her courage, creativity and dedication is something people should know about.” For Ed, an actuary by trade and at heart, it all comes down to the numbers. “What I’ve seen Barbara do in the nine years since starting the Ron Foley Foundation is carefully manage funds and maintain very low expense ratios.” That means the money raised goes directly to the Foundation’s mission of funding research, increasing awareness
and helping people and their families impacted by a diagnosis. “That isn’t something many charities do well, but Barbara has.” Since Ron’s passing, Ed has lost two more friends to pancreatic cancer – Joe Namnoun and most recently Eileen Kraus. “Ron, Joe and Eileen were all leaders in their fields and in the community. I’ve seen what this terrible disease can do, and how it can sneak up on someone with almost no warning. That’s why fighting pancreatic cancer is a cause that’s close to my heart.”
In 2017 Ron’s Run for the Roses was voted the “Best Charity Event” by readers of Hartford Magazine, and we could not have felt more honored. This Award belongs to our incredibly dedicated and passionate volunteers, who work year long to create a day like no other for our wonderful guests. This Award also belongs to our loyal and generous sponsors, vendors, donors and our gracious hosts, the Patricelli Family and their beautiful Folly Farm. We wish to express our sincerest thanks to all those who have helped Ron’s Run for the Roses maintain the spirit of a family united against pancreatic cancer under a very grand tent.

Marcus Sims was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in December of 2012. His only warning sign was significant weight loss, which had been attributed to diabetes. “Maybe I felt tired, but I was working and caring for my mother who had breast cancer and my father who had Alzheimer’s,” he recalls. “I certainly didn’t feel sick.” That’s why he was so shocked when the doctor sent him to hospice the very day he was diagnosed with less than a week to live. Thankfully, a nurse told Marcus she knew a local doctor she thought could help him. She was right and in 2013 Marcus underwent lifesaving Whipple surgery. Since then he has survived kidney, brain and lung cancer. Today he continues to battle liver cancer, although treatments appear to be working well.

In 2016, Marcus moved to Freedom, New Hampshire when a college friend offered him a place to stay. “I’d lost both my parents by then and had never lived in New England, so thought – why not?” Still, making ends meet on disability is challenging and he began researching sources for financial support. “Very few organizations give cash for every day expenses,” he says. “Ron’s Rescue Fund does. They helped me cover heating oil last winter and have helped me keep my old car running, which is everything to me because my doctors are at least 40 miles away.” What does he want others to know? If you’ve ever considered donating – then it’s in your heart, and you should. “Call it karma, call it faith, call it whatever you want,” he says. “But I will tell you, I give what I can even though I live on very little – and what happens? I find this wonderful organization that gives back to me tenfold. Not just financially, but emotionally. I know I can call Barbara or any of the other wonderful staff and someone will always be there for me.” We at the Ron Foley Foundation are sad to report that Marcus passed away in his sleep on October 11, 2017. We’ve chosen to include his story of hope because his optimism was contagious, and we’d like others to know him as we did.
Sheryl Woods is a poet, artist and a dog lover. In fact, her dog Gracie’s Lyme disease is what led to her pancreatic cancer diagnosis in January 2017. “I decided to get tested for Lyme too,” she explains. “I didn’t have it, but the doctor did find abnormalities in my blood tests.” Sheryl was also having pain in her stomach and back, so her doctor sent her for a CT scan.

The family already knew about the Ron Foley Foundation says Sheryl’s son Brandon. “My brother-in-law, Billy Coscarelli, is good friends with Michael Foley, Ron’s son, and my in-laws are close to the Foley family.” That’s how they also learned about Ron’s Rescue Fund.
Sheryl says she was amazed at the Foundation’s fast response to her request for financial assistance. “I was grateful for the amount they gave me, of course, but also how quickly they moved. It paid the rent, and really took the pressure off.” Brandon agrees. “My wife Cara and I handled the paperwork, and honestly it couldn’t have been easier from my perspective. The application is simple, and there was always someone available to answer my questions.” With three children and four grandchildren (and a fifth on the way), Sheryl says her family keeps her happy and feeling alive. “They take the worry away.” But more than that, she says, this experience has shown her how many people care about and love her. She counts those at the Foundation among those caring people. “Their support goes well beyond providing financial assistance. You get the sense that they really care.” Brandon adds, “They get it. They know what it’s like to be going through this and know what kind of support is important.” Sheryl is responding well to her treatment and says people should know there is help out there – and there’s hope. “To be able to hope is a very important thing.”

Rachel Adele Cabaniol and Karl Messerschmidt of Rachel Adele Studios have been photographing Ron Foley Foundation events pro bono since 2012. “I first connected with Barbara and the Foundation when Karl’s instrumental band played at one of their winter events in 2011,” Rachel explains. “I’d had my studio for about a year, and asked if I could bring along my camera to take pictures of the band. They said sure!” The next year, Barbara asked Rachel to photograph the fifth annual Ron’s Run for the Roses. “The tent was probably half the size it is today,” says Rachel. “It’s been incredible to be part of their journey as they’ve grown.”

Although pancreatic cancer hasn’t touched Rachel and Karl personally, cancer has. “Karl’s father has prostate cancer, and I lost an aunt to breast cancer,” Rachel says. “Cancer research is just so important – it’s one of the reasons I always make sure one of us is always available to shoot the Foundation’s events.” The couple agree, too, that the fact the organization is local is important. “We were both born and raised in Connecticut and now live in West Hartford,” says Karl. “We like that the Foundation is involved with Travelers and other area businesses like we are.” However, Rachel says the main reason they’ve supported the Foundation all these years is because of the people. “They are all just so charitable and kind. I’m always amazed at how much they help patients and families, and the way they honor the recipients of Ron’s Rescue. It’s just so beautiful. It really fuels our passion for them.”

The Foleys became clients of the Christopher Bryant Company in the months before Ron died. Their septic system backed up at a very tough time in Ron’s treatment. When Barbara frantically made several emergency calls to different septic companies for help, the Christopher Bryant Company was the only one to respond. As the company, owned by David and Sheri Litchfield and their sons Christopher and Bryant, worked on the repairs that were needed, David said it became obvious the Foleys were special people. “You could see it just by the relationships they had with their neighbors.” Barbara has remained a customer and David says when she decided to start the Ron Foley Foundation his initial feeling about the family was confirmed. “I was just so impressed that she chose to dedicate her time to helping others who were fighting pancreatic cancer,” he explains.
Then, two years ago one of David’s neighbors, Mike Austin, asked him to build a garage through the family’s second business – David Litchfield Building & Remodeling. “He had pancreatic cancer and didn’t want to have to worry about cleaning off his car to get to his appointments.” Once again, Sheri says, we were hearing about this disease. “We’re always looking for ways to give back to the community, we decided we wanted to do something to support the Foundation.” The Litchfields started with a newspaper ad early in 2016, offering to make a donation to the Foundation for every new client the Christopher Bryant Company signed. They made three separate donations over the course of 2016. “We were also learning more about pancreatic cancer,” David says. “I was so happy to be able to share that with Mike, including a story in one of their newsletters about a 10-year pancreatic cancer survivor. Although he died in November of 2016, I think it helped him to know there was hope.” That’s one of the reasons the Litchfield family continues to support the Foundation. And it’s one of the reasons why, when they lost their son and brother – Christopher – in a motorcycle accident in June of 2017, they decided to ask friends and family to make donations to the Foundation in lieu of flowers. “Chris was always fully behind what we were doing for the Foundation,” David says. “I think he would have been happy with how we chose to honor his life. And when Barbara and Tim came to Chris’ wake, I knew it had been the right choice.”
