Our Story

Ronald Edwards Foley

Ron’s Rescue Fund Established in memory of Ron Foley, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in October of 2005, the Foundation bearing his name is dedicated to promoting early detection and, ultimately, finding a cure for the disease through ongoing research.

Inspiration for the first fundraising event – a Kentucky Derby party in 2009 – came when those closest to Ron in life felt they could harness the generosity of his spirit to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. The day’s contributions were donated to pancreatic cancer research in Ron’s memory, and a tradition was born. Encouraged by the success of that initial Derby Day gathering, and with the support of family, friends and dedicated volunteers, Ron’s widow, Barbara Foley, formed the Ron Foley Foundation. Today, this 501(c)(3) charitable organization sponsors a series of annual events to build awareness and raise funds for research, education and patient assistance.

While we recognize that we can’t win the fight against pancreatic cancer without raising funds for research and awareness, we also know that patients and their families are under tremendous financial pressure. Imagine receiving the devastating news that you, your spouse or another loved one may have pancreatic cancer. Your world is changed forever. You quickly become engulfed in the medical system. Financial resources are soon stretched to the limit. You may even find you’ve exhausted your savings, and the stress becomes unbearable. That’s why we created Ron’s Rescue Fund to provide short-term financial assistance to cover expenses for essential needs that will otherwise go unmet.

Our Mission Fund medical research leading to improved diagnosis, more effective treatment and a cure for pancreatic cancer. Promote public awareness of pancreatic cancer through education. Reduce human suffering caused by pancreatic cancer by giving direct financial aid to pancreatic cancer patients.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, This past year the Ron Foley Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary – and what an incredible decade it has been! Ten years ago I had no idea what the future would hold for me or for the Foundation. One thing for certain: it has been an amazing journey to watch the Foundation grow. I’m also filled with joy that my family has grown to include all our wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly to help us in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Their dedication and talent were on full display at our 10th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses. What a spectacular event! The perfect weather set the tone for our beautiful guests, who turned out in the most dazzling hats and derby day attire I have ever seen. Perhaps it was the sunny skies, but I prefer to believe it was the unity of purpose that drove the day’s earnings to its highest ever. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors and vendors we raised nearly $312,000. May 5, 2018 is very memorable for another important milestone we reached. On that day the Ron Foley Foundation passed the $2,000,000 milestone in cumulative revenues! 2018 was a year of significant growth in other ways for the Foundation. We established a Medical Advisory Board of distinguished physicians,

researchers and caregivers led by Dr. Andrew Salner. Together they provide scientific guidance to the Foundation so that we may better assess the merits of research grant applications. Their first order of business was to approve a grant of $70,000 to support translational research at the Yale Cancer Center for Pancreatic Disease. We also extended our educational outreach to southern Connecticut and the Yale cancer community as a sponsor of the Yale Pancreatic Cancer Symposium. In addition, we continued to provide funding for studies and educational programs at Hartford HealthCare and Western Connecticut Health Network. Through the efforts of our efficient and dedicated Ron’s Rescue Committee, we are providing aid to more pancreatic cancer patients with serious financial needs. Given the urgency of their requests, we have worked hard to shorten the time required to assess applications for Ron’s Rescue assistance and fund aid to needy patients. We have now provided more than $200,000 in direct financial aid to individual pancreatic cancer patients. Word is spreading about Ron’s Rescue and as a result we have funded aid to patients from Maine to New Jersey.

Barbara Foley President

Pancreatic cancer is the third deadliest of cancers nationwide and is predicted to become the second deadliest in just two short years. The five-year overall survival rate at 8% is the lowest of all cancers. Mortality rates for all the other major cancers are on the decline while pancreatic cancer mortality rates are increasing. The need to reverse this trend through early detection is what motivates the Ron Foley Foundation each day. It is the unbreakable spirit of the patients and their families that inspires us. And it is the dedicated and compassionate physicians, caregivers and researchers that give us hope – hope for breakthroughs in early detection and treatment methods leading to a cure for pancreatic cancer within the next ten years. I look forward to you meeting just a few of these inspirational people in our annual report. Together we are making a difference.

MAKING A

Difference

That’s a lot of cheesecake! Thank you to the Hartford Restaurant Group (HRG) and its Wood-n-Tap Bar & Grill for donating $766 to the Foundation. For every Livy’s cheesecake sold during November 2017, HRG donated $1 to raise awareness.

Finding a cure with Stew Leonard’s It was a pleasure to join the Stew Leonard’s team, who are part of the Tom’s Cure Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, to tour the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring, NY. It was uplifting to learn of the work that Dr. David Tuveson and his research staff are doing in using mouse and human models of pancreatic cancer to explore the fundamental biology of malignancy and thereby identifying new diagnostic and treatment strategies. And thank you to Rina Fochi and the Stew Leonard’s Newington store for their $342 donation from the Wishing Well.

Thank you to the Travelers, the Greater Hartford Community Foundation and the Birdies for Charity presenting sponsors, the Ford Motor Company and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, for all of their support.

Jennifer Loughran, Barbara Foley and Cheryl Sullivan with Nathan Grube, Travelers Championship Tournament Director, and Andy Bessette, Travelers Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. In 2017, the Foundation raised $3,020 from the program plus $500 through volunteer hours.

Hitting a High Note Thank you to Greg and Mary-Jo Toczydlowski for selecting the Ron Foley Foundation as its benefactor for their annual Music Fest at their School House Farm in North Granby. The event raised $9,100, exceeding the Toczydlowski’s $7,500 goal.

Outrun Pancreatic Cancer For the third year, the Ron Foley Foundation was honored to be an official charity of the Eversource Hartford Marathon on October 15, 2017. With more than 20 volunteers cheering on our 17 runners, Team RFF raised $7,685.

Across the Globe The Foundation is a proud member of the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition, which is made up of 40 pancreatic cancer non-profit advocacy groups from 22 countries and 6 continents. Jennifer Loughran (second from right) is with representatives from Austria, Australia and Canada at the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition meeting in Coral Gables, FL in May 2018.

Impact

Tony Sisti has been Barbara Foley’s neighbor for several years, and after the first Ron’s Run for the Roses – held in Barbara’s backyard – he knew immediately it could become a signature community event. “I encouraged Barbara to reach a bit beyond her goals and vision,” Tony says. “I started by asking her what she wanted to raise.” After talking it through, Barbara agreed she could strive for much more, but it would mean an event with 200 or Tony Sisti 300 people. “We talked about the opportunity for an entirely equestrian themed event which led us to Folly Farm in Simsbury.” The relationship between the owners and team at Folly Farm and the Foundation grew, and Ron’s Run for the Roses has been held there on Kentucky Derby Day every year since. During the Foundation’s second year, Barbara and Tony started thinking about other ways to raise awareness and funds throughout the year. That’s how ‘The Power of Purple’ came to be. “The idea was to have local residents and businesses decorate with purple lights during November, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month,” Tony explains. He also negotiated with the West Hartford Center Business Association to display the Foundation’s banners on the lampposts throughout the Center each November. A one-time honorary chair for Ron’s Run and a past Foundation board member, Tony remains involved – considering himself a Community Ambassador for the Foundation. “I get out as much as possible to spread the word about the good they are doing,” he says. For a relatively small grassroots volunteer-based organization, Tony feels they’ve been successful on all fronts of their mission – making a big impact by funding cutting edge research, putting educational programs together that focus on the facts about pancreatic cancer and helping people who are battling the disease get the support they need. Based on this past success, Tony says one thing is clear: “We’re not done growing yet.” James Farrell, MD and Barbara Clerkin, RN, MPH have worked together for several years on issues related to pancreatic cancer, first at UCLA, Los Angeles, and now at Yale-New Haven Hospital/Smilow Cancer Hospital. “We’d been exploring research and educational opportunities focused on pancreatic cancer in particular,” says Dr. Farrell. “Having worked with the national Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) I was aware there were also local foundations here in Connecticut addressing pancreas diseases both from a patient and research perspective. At YNHH, I met Barbara Foley and Jennifer Loughran and started a conversation about the Ron Foley Foundation and their unique mission Barbara Clerkin, RN, MPH and what we were doing at Yale for early screening for people who are at higher risk and James Farrell, MD for pancreas cancer, in addition to precision medicine and pancreas disease. What we learned through our conversations is the Foundation’s mission and ours were in perfect alignment.” With the support of the Foundation and Yale - Smilow Cancer Hospital – Dr. Farrell and the Yale pancreas team held their first educational multidisciplinary symposium in February 2018. Speakers covered what’s happening in the field of pancreatic cancer in terms of early detection and treatment options, as well as presentations on areas of active and cutting edge research into pancreatic cancer ongoing at Yale. “In total, about 180 people attended – patients, Yale and community physicians, nurses, APRNs and industry professionals,” says Barbara Clerkin. Based on the positive feedback they received, they are planning a second for the spring of 2019 and hope to make their Pancreatic Cancer Symposium an annual event. The Foundation also approved a $70,000 grant for Nik Joshi, PhD, from the Yale Department of Immunobiology, who is collaborating with Dr. Farrell in researching the role of the immune system in both the development and treatment of pancreatic cancer. Their project, “Pancreatic Cancer Mouse and Human Organoids: Translational Research in Early Detection and Precision Medicine,” involves using patient samples to study the body’s immune response to the early stage of pancreatic cancer, as well as developing individualized treatment approaches for patients with all stages of pancreatic cancer. While the Foundation’s financial support is critical to funding research and education, Barbara Clerkin feels their impact goes far beyond that. “They really focus on helping make the journey easier for patients and their families.” Dr. Farrell agrees. “I’m impressed and in awe of the Foley Foundation because I know what it takes to keep it going – commitment yes, but also perseverance and optimism. They have it all.”

Friendship Kathy Callahan, Alliances by Alisa, Tim Parker, New Country Motor Cars Group, Alisa Picerno, Alliances by Alisa, Rich Ortiz, Musician, Barbara Foley and Jennifer Loughran

For the fifth year in a row, New Country Motor Cars Group of Hartford was the Triple Crown/ Presenting Sponsor for Ron’s Run for the Roses – a partnership and friendship that is truly treasured and appreciated. As part of their sponsorship, New Country hosts a special event for the Ron Foley Foundation during National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in November. For the first three years, this was a purple-themed recognition event called “Put Your Purple On,” which featured a fashion show as the night’s

entertainment. In 2017, Tim Parker, Vice President of New Country, wanted to try something new and turned the event into a fundraiser. With the help and creative thinking of Steve Dunham, General Manager, New Country Mercedes-Benz, “Rock Away Pancreatic Cancer” was born! On November 10, the MercedesBenz showroom was transformed into an acoustic café for an evening of live entertainment, cocktails and light fare. Over 120 guests enjoyed a private concert by popular musician Rich Ortiz and helped raise $4,758.

“New Country is proud to have been a longtime supporter of the Foundation,” said Tim. “We are thrilled to have another opportunity to raise awareness for this great cause and the work they’ve been doing to help patients and find a cure for pancreatic cancer.”

Passion

Cora and Michael Altschuler were introduced to the Ron Foley Foundation by way of the Third Age Initiative, a program offered by Leadership Greater Hartford that exposes older and retired people to a variety of different charities and non-profits. “I was looking to volunteer my time to a good cause,” explains Cora. “The Ron Foley Foundation was a great match for me because I’m a pancreatic cancer survivor, and I personally know three other people who were diagnosed around the same time as I was.” Michael also spent his entire career at Travelers. “I knew Ron, and had great respect for him – so that was just another connection for us.”

Cora and Michael Altschuler

Michael says they’d made donations to the national Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, but were happy to find a local organization dedicated to the disease. “I’d much rather be involved with an organization that’s based in my community.” Cora agrees, saying she likes that the Foundation focuses on research and education as well as providing those suffering with much needed financial support. That’s why to celebrate her 80th birthday, Cora invited her Facebook friends to make a donation to the Foundation. She started with a goal of $200, but quickly raised over $700. “I was amazed at the response, but so happy because I know every dollar counts,” she says. “I want to do whatever I can because I know the earlier we can detect this cancer the more people we are going to save.” Cora wasn’t able to participate much in 2017 because she was in treatment, but has been more involved this year. “Volunteering – staying engaged and active – is an important part of living a quality life for me,” she says. “All the people involved with the Foundation are really passionate about the work. They are positive and energetic, and that gives me a lot of courage and hope.”

For two years in a row, Ron’s Run for the Roses has been voted the “Best Charity Event” by the readers of Hartford Magazine, a recognition that is truly an honor. This Award is shared with all of our generous and loyal sponsors, donors, and vendors, many who have been with us since we had the first event in 2009. And our achievements and successes could not happen without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers – we are the BEST because they are the BEST. Thank you to everyone who makes Ron’s Run for the Roses the “Premier Kentucky Derby Day” gala in Connecticut and for helping us raise awareness about pancreatic cancer. Just a few of our wonderful volunteers

Gratitude

Caring Lynn Simons has been living with pancreatic cancer for four years. Prior to her diagnosis in 2014, she was a full time school nurse at Southern Connecticut Hebrew Academy. “I love working with children, and found the work meaningful and rewarding,” Lynn says. “But I had to resign when I got sick.” Lynn and her husband of 49 years have four children and seven grandchildren. They learned about the Ron Foley Foundation and Ron’s Rescue Fund through their social worker at Smilow Cancer Hospital. “Because I had to leave my job, we needed financial help,” Lynn explains. “My social worker got in touch with the Foundation and managed the whole process for us. It was all very easy.” The Simons family is a two-time Ron’s Rescue recipient – first in February of 2015 and again in June of 2018. “The Foundation has been very generous to us,” says Lynn. “It’s so heartwarming to me to see how everyone involved truly cares about the people they help. They are very attentive to what I’m doing.” According to her social worker, Lynn, who turns 72 this fall, continues to undergo treatment and “…has been steadfast and vigilant in her fight against pancreatic cancer.”

PayFlex® is an Aetna company that provides administration for health care accounts such as Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). According to Susan Bambara, Director of Strategic Marketing for PayFlex, the company is continually looking to improve their efficiency. One of the ways they do this is with an annual paperless campaign that encourages members to link a bank account to their HSA or FSA. “This helps us eliminate the need to send physical paper checks to reimburse members for health-related expenses” she says. “In addition to improving the member experience, it also simplifies our processes, cuts costs and saves trees.” But they’ve taken their campaign a step further. “We really want to make a difference in the world, which is why we incorporate a social incentive into the campaign as well,” Susan says. This involves making a donation to a charity that is meaningful to the team. This year, Kevin Froeb, Head of Strategic Initiatives & Analytics for the group, brought forth the idea of supporting the Ron Foley Foundation. Kevin’s mother, Mary, is a pancreatic cancer survivor and he serves as a board member for the Foundation.

Susan Bambara, Kevin Froeb and Samantha Alleva of PayFlex

After analyzing all their options and collecting feedback from the team, Samantha Alleva, Sr. Marketing Communications Account Manager for PayFlex, announced that the Foundation would be the charity featured in their 2018 campaign. “We thought it was a great cause and liked that it was a local organization, but for me personally – I loved it,” says Susan, who lost her father to pancreatic cancer when she was 17. The campaign offered to donate $1 to the Foundation for every person who opted to go paperless for a total donation of up to $10,000. “About 7% of our members ended up linking a bank account, which is a pretty impressive response rate,” Susan explains. As a result, PayFlex was able to make the full $10,000 donation to the Foundation. This is just one more example of how Aetna supports the Foundation. The company was a Clubhouse sponsor at the 2018 Ron’s Run for the Roses. In 2017, 20 Aetna offices across the country participated in World Pancreatic Cancer Day, which falls during the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month of November. Employees “put on their purple” and decorated their workspaces with purple lights to bring awareness to the cause. In addition, the home office has displayed the Foundation’s banner on their parking garage during November for the last four years, where it is seen by thousands of people commuting along I-84 every day it hangs.

Support

Thank you to all of our Event Steering Committee members and volunteers who made the 10th anniversary Ron’s Run for the Roses a huge success! The longest stretch of spring-like conditions in event history led up to the 10th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses. With sunny skies and spring firmly in the air, our guests pulled out all the stops in their fabulous Derby Day attire. Maybe it was the feeling of hope that spring ushers in but it is with extreme gratitude we report that this year’s Ron’s Run for the Roses was our most successful ever, grossing more than $312,000. This total was from ticket sales,

donations, live and silent auctions, the Monarch Jewelry Bling Contest, the sale of HALO 6000’s and HALO Bolts and the sale of commemorative mint julep cups. The Foundation wishes to thank our tireless volunteers, who worked their magic to create our spectacular event and champion our mission year-round. We would also like to thank our extremely generous sponsors, donors and vendors for their incredible support.

Our very special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, New Country Motor Cars Group, who surprised the crowd by announcing that they would be back for their 6th year as our Presenting Sponsor at the 11th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses on Saturday, May 4, 2019. We are so grateful for their partnership. Another milestone was reached at the 10th Annual Ron’s Run for the Roses when the Foundation passed the $2,000,000 mark in total revenues raised.

Appreciation Cheryl Sullivan has been involved with Ron’s Run for the Roses almost from the very beginning. “My friend Annette Landers was in charge of the volunteers for the event, but couldn’t attend in 2013.” A Travelers employee, Cheryl had been managing volunteers for the Travelers Championship – so Annette asked her to help out in her absence, and she’s been responsible for Ron’s Run volunteers ever since.

“Our goal is to steadily increase the number of volunteers we have, for the event but in general as well,” explains Cheryl. And that’s how John and Pat Geckler came to be introduced to the Foundation. Pat and Cheryl had worked together for years at Travelers, and were good friends. “I was looking for more volunteer opportunities after I retired,” says Pat. “So Cheryl told me about the Ron Foley Foundation.” She started helping out in the office, but it wasn’t long before she started taking on other projects.

Cheryl Sullivan, John Geckler and Patricia Geckler

Pat has been part of the talented team of volunteers who design the beautiful displays for both the silent and live auctions at Ron’s Run. She’s also in charge of facility planning for the Foundation’s signature event – working with all the vendors it takes to make Ron’s Run a success. That includes managing all the food and drink, tent and decorations, electronics and cable, and more. Her husband John does a little bit of everything, lending a hand whenever and wherever he’s needed. Pat and John are typically onsite at Folly Farm for much of the week leading up to the event, and also organize Foundation volunteers for the Hartford Marathon. “Pat and I have been involved in several charitable organizations over the years,” says John. “Nothing even comes close to this Foundation. Barbara Foley’s enthusiasm and commitment trickle down to all the rest of us.” Cheryl and Pat agree, adding that Barbara also goes out of her way to welcome and thank every volunteer. “They are wonderful people who are so appreciative of everything you do for them,” says Pat. And John says that appreciation makes volunteers feel valued. “When you feel valued, you simply want to do more.” Clem Sayers first became aware of the Ron Foley Foundation through his friends Mary and Dick Froeb. Mary is a pancreatic cancer survivor who has been involved with the Foundation from the beginning. Clem and his wife also knew Barbara Foley through their sons, who went to school together. About five years ago, Clem’s company – ROGO, a beer and soft drink distribution center in East Hartford – began donating numerous items for Ron’s Run for the Roses at Folly Farm. This included Jack Daniels cocktails and this year Corona for attendees to enjoy since the event also fell on Cinco de Mayo. ROGO is a division of Allen S. Goodman Corporation, which distributes spirits. Using his connections, Clem has also been able to arrange donations for wine and spirits as well as other types of beer. “Our philosophy is that because we get a lot from the local community, we want to give back whenever we have the opportunity,” says Clem. “I’m lucky to have access to these things that help raise money for the cause.” He goes on to say that for him, the Foundation is just the best kind of charity. “They are out there in the community and committed to helping people who need it.” Clem tells the story of one Ron’s Run when a Ron’s Rescue recipient got up to speak. “This woman had lost her husband, and the Foundation wrote her a check because she was in financial trouble,” he says. “It was just unbelievable to me. There aren’t many charities that do that, and I’m very happy to be able to be a part of it.”

Commitment

Community Karen Herbert and Barbara Karsky, co-owners of BK&Co. – a women’s fashion boutique in West Hartford Center – became involved with the Ron Foley Foundation during its first ‘Power of Purple’ event. “Karen and I had a friend who had just passed away from pancreatic cancer,” says Barbara. “So it was something we understood, which is why we were eager to get behind the Foundation.”

“We’ve stayed involved all these years because of the people,” says Karen. “Everyone from Barbara Foley on down the line are so committed and connected. It’s a deep rooted community organization – and that’s important to us.” Barbara agrees. “The Foundation is made up primarily of this special group of women. They are so passionate about what they are doing, and that is contagious.”

Barbara Karsky, Eva Hausman, Barbara

This, they both believe, is what makes the Foundation such a success. Foley and Karen Herbert “Everything they do is geared toward giving back to the community. Funds raised go directly to research and education, as well as providing financial relief to people who are living with the disease,” explains Karen. Twice a year, BK&Co. holds a fashion show to raise funds for a specific charity. Their spring 2018 fashion show benefitted the Foundation, and was held in honor of the husband of a long-time customer. “She lost him to pancreatic cancer, and we wanted to do something to show her how much he – and she – meant to us,” says Barbara. “He was actually one of our first loyalty customers. His wife was a teacher and he would come in every year to buy her a ‘backto-school’ outfit.” In addition to raising money for the Foundation, Karen and Barbara also thought their customers would benefit from getting to know the people of the Foundation. “Barbara Foley, of course, knows firsthand how fast moving and devastating this disease can be,” says Karen. “We wanted our customers to see all the good that she’s done since losing Ron and to know that it’s possible to move through it.”

Dale Hammond met Ron Foley in the late 1980s when Ron took over management of Personal Lines at Travelers. “The business was in rough shape at the time,” explains Dale. “Under Ron’s leadership, we were able to turn it into a profitable business, saving close to 1,000 jobs.” Over time, the two men forged a friendship outside of work. Both had lake houses – Dale’s in New Hampshire and Ron’s in Vermont. “We spent a lot of time talking about our weekends on the lake.” After the Aetna merger, Dale continued to work for Ron running a company for Travelers in Florida. “I had a scare with prostate cancer and Ron actually came down and went to the doctor with me,” says Dale. And when Ron got sick, Dale was there by his side – Dale Hammond sometimes even bringing him his homemade peach ice cream. “He always said he didn’t want it, but he never could resist it.” Dale and his wife Priscilla have always supported the Foundation by making annual donations, but haven’t been able to attend Ron’s Run for the Roses. “We were thankful to be there for the 10th anniversary of the event though,” he says. That’s because this year Dale lost two more friends to pancreatic cancer – Ed Cochran and Pete Light Sr., his daughterin-law’s father. “Ed told me he felt like he was sitting at home waiting for that silver bullet – for a cure.” Since then, Dale has made ‘Let’s find the silver bullet for Pancreatic Cancer’ his personal mission. It’s one of the reasons he and his wife filled a premium table at this year’s Ron’s Run, and why they say they will continue to in the future. “I am so proud of what Barbara has been able to accomplish. She’s done so much for research and education as well as for people who have the disease. It’s pretty remarkable how she took this backyard party and grew it into something so special.”
