MEET OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR
Daniel Meyer Music Director
As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named new Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019. In continuation of his longtime dedication to music education and community involvement in Erie, Meyer created Beethoven 4/4, a four-year project focusing on the life and works of the great composer with the Erie Philharmonic. Performances this season include Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3, Piano Concerto No. 1, and a season-ending gala performance of Symphony No. 9 with the Erie Philharmonic Chorus and a cast of operatic soloists including Mark Doss. He conducts new commissions with the Philharmonic this season including a violin concerto by Michael Torke, a trumpet concerto by Vivian Fung, and an overture by Zhou Tian. In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Meyer’s passion for connecting with audiences has led him to develop strong ties with the community though frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. Meyer returns to conduct the Pittsburgh Symphony and West Virginia Symphony this season and leads a new production of Mozart’s Così fan Tutte. He recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker. In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, he has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany. Meyer's eclectic and groundbreaking symphonic programs this season include works by Norman Dello Joio, Howard Hanson, and Duke Ellington in combination with masterworks of Ravel, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky. Featured works include Shostakovich’s epic Symphony No. 5, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2, and great vocal works including Fauré’s Requiem and Italian opera choruses. As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons Meyer has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies. His critically acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua. Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer Studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

James D. Niblock Allegheny College Choir Director James D. Niblock is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Allegheny College. He leads Allegheny’s five curricular choral ensembles and provides instruction and support in the area of applied vocal studies. Additionally, he has taught courses in music theory, history, and appreciation, and has served as co-leader for Allegheny’s experiential learning seminar in Italy. He teaches a multi-disciplinary science course about the human voice, and a writing and public speaking seminar titled Music & Comedy. He was the 2019 recipient of Allegheny’s Thoburn Award for Excellence in Teaching. Prior to his appointment at Allegheny, Dr. Niblock served on the faculties of Colgate University, the University of Connecticut, University School (OH), Eastern US Music Camp (NY), and the World Scholar-Athlete Games (RI). He has prepared ensembles for performances

on public television, for collaborations with professional ensembles, and for performance at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. As a choirmaster, he has served several church denominations, and more still as a singer. His credits as a chorister include the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, the Philharmonia Chorus (London), and the Norfolk Chamber Choir. Dr. Niblock has presented work at conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Collegiate Choral Organization. He holds degrees from the University of Connecticut, Binghamton University, and Allegheny College. An active professional on several fronts, Dr. Niblock has been engaged as a singer, clinician, and conductor throughout the U.S. as well as in Russia, New Zealand, England, and Spain. He lives in Cochranton, Pennsylvania, with his wife Carol and their three children: Benjamin, Peter, and Madeleine.

Grammy-nominated composer Zhou Tian seeks inspiration from different cultures and strives to mix them seamlessly into a musically satisfying combination for performers and audience alike. featuring violinist Caroline Goulding; “Broken Ink,” a 30-minute, multi-movement meditation on Song Dynasty poetry premiered by Princeton Symphony under Rossen Milanov; “Petals of Fire,” a fierce rhapsody inspired by American artist Cy Twombly’s 1989 painting, premiered by Michigan State University Wind Symphony and Kevin Sedatole at the 2017 CBDNA National Convention; and “Viaje” (voyage) for flute and strings by Dolce Suono Ensemble and featured on American Public Media’s Performance Today®—of which the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote “[it] fused the composer’s Chinese American sensibility with the lore of ancient Spain so convincingly that the exotic flute solos for [Mimi] Stillman sounded like the most natural thing in the world.” Zhou’s “The Grand Canal,” a kaleidoscopic large-scale work mixing together two traditional Chinese instrumentalists (erhu and ruan), a Chinese opera singer, and a full symphony orchestra with chorus, was performed during a nationally televised celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It received its US premiere by the Princeton (NJ) and Columbus (OH) symphonies under Rossen Milanov, and its European premiere by RTÉ National Symphony under Jiamin Song at the National Concert Hall in Dublin, Ireland. Other noted performances have come from the Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by Daniel Meyer, the Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä, Houston Symphony and Christoph Köenig, the Indianapolis Symphony and Christoph Eberle, Hong Kong Philharmonic and Rossen Milanov, Spokane Symphony under Eckart Preu and James Lowe, and The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” conducted by LaToya Webb. He has served as composerin-residence with the Green Bay Symphony, Chicago’s Music In the Loft Series, and the Reno Philharmonic. His works have been broadcast on NPR, PBS, and recorded on Cedille, Innova, Fanfare Cincinnati, Archimusic, and Pacific records. Among his many awards and honors are first prize in the Washington International Competition for Composers, first prize in the ASCAP/Lotte Lehmann Art Song Competition, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Glick Award, the Minnesota Orchestra Composers Institute, Symphony in C Composers Award, American Composers Orchestra Underwood Readings, Presser Music Award, three ASCAP Morton Gould awards, and an Excellence Award of Large Symphonic Work in the 16th Musical Composition Award given (every five years) by the Ministry of Culture of China. In 2013, the recording of his String Quartet No. 2 “The Great Wall” was nominated for Best Classical Album at the prestigious Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan. His recording of “The Grand Canal” was exhibited at MIDEM, the world’s leading international event for the music industry in Cannes, France. Many of his commissions are supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2019, Beijing Music Festival named him “Artist of the Year.” Outside of the classical arena, Zhou has composed music for film, dance, and crossover. He started playing piano in numerous recording sessions and arranging all kinds of music when he was 12, often working with his father who was a busy commercial composer in China. When he was 17, his interest in Jazz led to the creation of “Duet” for flute and piano, which earned him an Honorable Mention at 1999 Julius Hemphill International Jazz Composition Awards. His score for “Eternal Beloved,” a major Chinese studio film about love and afterlife—described as “a pristine look and delicate tone…that’s beautifully matched by Zhou’s warm, restrained score” (Variety)—received critical acclaim since the premiere at 2009 Shanghai International Film Festival. His award-winning crossover albums put Chinese folk music on a spin by mixing performance and technology. Born in 1981 into a musical family in Hangzhou, Zhou came of age in a new China marked by economic reforms, and was in the United States by his 19th birthday. Trained at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music (B.M.), New York’s Juilliard School (M.M.), and the University of Southern California (D.M.A.), he studied with Jennifer Higdon, Christopher Rouse, Stephen Hartke and Donald Crockett. He held Composition Fellowships from Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival, Henri Mancini Institute, and American Conservatory at Fontainebleau. He is associate professor of composition at Michigan State University College of Music.

PROGRAM Notes Notes on the Program by Ken Meltzer
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Opus 125, “Choral” (1824) 65 minutes The first performance of the Ninth Symphony took place at the Kärnthnerthor Theater in Vienna on May 7, 1824, with Michael Umlauf conducting. Approximate performance time is sixty-eight minutes. Beethoven’s Ninth and final Symphony (“Choral”) represents, on a number of levels, a summit of the immortal composer’s artistic life. The Ninth is by far the most epic of Beethoven’s Symphonies, both in terms of length and performing forces. The revolutionary introduction of vocal soloists and chorus in the finale was a bold masterstroke that forever expanded the potential of symphonic expression. The text of the Symphony’s finale, based upon the 1785 Ode “To Joy” by the great German writer, Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805), held a lifelong attraction for the composer. Likewise, Beethoven’s melodic setting of Schiller’s Ode in the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth was the product of an extended genesis. A version of the melody first appears in a song Beethoven composed in the mid-1790s, entitled “Gegenliebe” (“Mutual Love”), based upon a poem by Gottfried August Bürger. An even more startling premonition of the Ninth Symphony may be found in Beethoven’s 1808 Fantasia in C minor for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra, Opus 80. And the sublime writing for the vocal soloists and chorus in the final scene of Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio (1805, rev. 1806, 1814), looks forward to the finale of the Ninth. Beethoven composed the Ninth Symphony during a period between the spring of 1823 and January 1824. As late as the summer of 1823, Beethoven considered ending his Symphony in traditional fashion with a purely instrumental fourth movement. Even after Beethoven made the final decision to employ Schiller’s text, the question remained of how to effect the appropriate transition to this new and daring path. And then one day (according to the composer’s friend and biographer, Anton Schindler), Beethoven exclaimed: “I’ve got it, I’ve got it.” Beethoven had sketched the following words: “Let us sing the song of the immortal Schiller.” This text was to be performed by the basses of the chorus, with the soprano then presenting Schiller’s Ode. Beethoven ultimately modified the above text to read: “O friends, no more these sounds! Let us sing songs that are more cheerful and full of joy!” Both these lines, and the beginning of Schiller’s Ode, are given to the solo bass vocalist. The premiere of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony took place at the Vienna Kärnthnerthor Theater on May 7, 1824. By this stage of Beethoven’s life, the composer’s hearing had deteriorated to such an extent that conducting the performance was out of the question. Instead, Michael Umlauf led the premiere. But all the while, Beethoven was at Umlauf’s side, attempting to direct the tempos for the various movements. At the conclusion of the performance, the audience erupted with a spirited ovation. Karoline Unger was the contralto soloist at the premiere of the Beethoven Ninth. More than four decades later, she met with the British music writer, Sir George Grove. During that meeting, Unger described what happened at the May 7, 1824 concert: The master, though placed in the midst of this confluence of music, heard nothing of it at all and was not even sensible of the applause of the audience at the end of his great work, but continued standing with his back to the audience, and beating the time, till Fräulein Unger, who had sung the contralto part, turned him, or induced him to turn round and face the people, who were still clapping their hands, and giving way to the greatest demonstrations of pleasure. His turning round, and the sudden conviction thereby forced upon everybody that he had not done so before, because he could not hear what was going on, acted like an electric shock on all present, 48 | ERIE PHILHARMONIC

and a volcanic explosion of sympathy and admiration followed, which was repeated again and again, and seemed as if it would never end. The Ninth Symphony is in four movements. The first (Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso) opens with the furtive introduction of a two-note descending motif (pairs of descending notes provide the thematic nucleus for much of the Ninth Symphony), soon thundered fortissimo by the orchestra. The winds also hint at the immortal Ode “To Joy” theme with a dolce ascending and descending theme. The movement proceeds to a fierce resolution, capped by a final statement of the opening theme. The scherzo (Molto vivace; Presto; Molto vivace) appears as the Symphony’s second (rather than the traditional third) movement. Once again, a descending two-note motif, introduced the outset, provides the thematic nucleus. In the central trio, the winds introduce a flowing theme that is another precursor to the Ode “To Joy” melody The beautiful slow-tempo movement (Adagio molto e cantabile) is based upon two themes, both derived from a descending two-note motif. In the finale (Presto) the principal themes from the first three movements return, only to be rejected in turn by the orchestra. Finally, the orchestra sings the immortal Ode “To Joy” melody. The bass soloist heralds the entrance of the vocal soloists and chorus. A series of variations on the melody culminates in the orchestra’s Prestissimo race to the finish.

Zhou Tian • born in 1981 Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian (JOH TEE-en; Zhou is his surname) was born in 1981 in the city of Hangzhou, China, 100 miles southwest of Shanghai, and did his undergraduate work in composition and piano at the Shanghai Conservatory. In 2001 Zhou came to the United States to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied composition with Richard Danielpour and Jennifer Higdon and piano with Meng-Chieh Liu. Zhou subsequently earned a master’s degree at the Juilliard School as a student of Christopher Rouse and a doctorate at the University of Southern California, where he studied composition with Stephen Hartke and Donald Crockett and piano with Antoinette Perry. Zhou taught at Colgate University from 2011 until 2016, when he was appointed Associate Professor of Composition at the Michigan State University College of Music. Zhou’s distinctions include a 2018 Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for his Concerto for Orchestra, First Prize in the Washington International Competition for Composers, First Prize in the Kathryn Thomas International Composition Competition, Julius Hemphill International Composers Award, Presser Foundation Music Award, three ASCAP/Morton Gould Awards, an Excellence Award in the 16th Musical Composition Award by the Ministry of Culture of China (given only every five years), and composition fellowships from the Aspen, Tanglewood and Fontainebleau music festivals; he has also served as Composer-in-Residence for the Green Bay Symphony and the Chicago chamber series Music in the Loft. Zhou wrote that Rise, commissioned by the Allentown Symphony, Spokane Symphony and Erie Philharmonic on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the United States’ involvement in World War I with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, “is a five-minute work inspired by diaries of American soldiers during World War I. During a visit to the Library of Congress, I was drawn to the personal and unmediated experiences and emotions the soldiers themselves wrote of on the battleground. Whether it’s a brief note about the weather, a long entry about losing a comrade, or a touching moment when a letter from home arrives (‘letters from home are like the heavens breaking through depressing clouds’ — First Lieutenant Quincy Ayres), the soldiers’ stories moved me deeply. Rise attempts to convey the emotions of simple servicemen — their fears, frustrations, love and awe — through the intimacy and power of the symphony orchestra. It is a musical postcard from America’s coming-of-age war, 100 years later.”

Biographies Mark Steven Doss
Grammy Award winner Mark S. Doss, having sung 100 roles with more than 60 major opera companies, recently revived Nicholas Lens’ Shell Shock in Paris for the Armistice anniversary (available on DVD), performed Nabucco (role #99) with Dorset Opera and Rigoletto (role #100) with Welsh National Opera. Mr. Doss, who began his career on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera, is noted for having sung 8 major roles at the famed Teatro alla Scala in Milan, while also receiving critical acclaim for his portrayals of Wagner’s Dutchman, Scarpia in Tosca, Verdi’s Macbeth, and Méphistophélès in Faust, among others. He sings the Giant on Stephen Colannti’s CD (ECO Records) of The Selfish Giant. Upcoming: The Time of Our Singing at Brussels’ Théâtre de la Monnaie, the Beethoven 9th with the Minnesota Orchestra, Oedipus Rex with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, and Aida with Dallas Opera.
unique dark, yet colorful sound. In a 2010 performance of Madame Butterfly, she was hailed for her “rich sound and moving performance” –City News for her portrayal of Suzuki. Joan decided to become an opera singer at an early age after winning the Young Aspiring Artist Competition at Carnegie Hall in 1997. She attended Gordon College (Wenham MA) where she majored in Vocal Performance. She further honed her skills as a Resident Artist at Palm Beach Opera. There, she performed roles such as Hansel Hansel und Gretel and Queen of Hearts from Robert Chaul’s Alice in Wonderland. She also had mainstage performance opportunities during their season, in particular Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites. She then moved to New York City to study with world renowned Metropolitan Opera mezzo soprano Mignon Dunn and remains under her tutelage. In 2007, she was the grant recipient of the Gerda Lissner Competition. As a performer and actress, Joan has sung on stages in the U.S. as well as abroad. Her most recent performance was her interpretation of the Queen of France in the World Premiere of Les Tois Moisquettaires Opera at the Phoenicia Festival for the Voice, last summer. She’s known for the title roll of Carmen which she performed for the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Arbor Opera Theater (MI) and Amore Opera in NYC among others.

Top Prize Winner of the 2018 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition Wagner Division, Soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra made her muchanticipated Metropolitan Opera Debut in October 2014 as “First Lady” in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. She recently returned to the Met for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons for the revival of the English version of the opera in the same role. In 2018 she sang a solo concert in Mexico with the Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Chihuahua, performed Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass and Schubert’s Mass in G with the Scarsdale New Choral Society (NY) and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with the National Chorale in Lincoln Center at David Geffen Hall - where she also performed Verdi’s Requiem with the same organization in 2016. In 2019 appearances included Kodály’s Te Deum and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with the Oregon Music Festival, and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Mass in C with the Scarsdale New Choral Society. Ms. Shoremount-Obra is a native of New Jersey and holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music (BM, MM) and The Juilliard School (AD). C. Thomas Brooks Choir Director As a conductor and clinician C. Thomas Brooks has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, including such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York City, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and the Salzburg Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria. In the Northeast he is well-known as a choral conductor, voice teacher, college professor, opera conductor, and clinician. After completing graduate work at New England Conservatory he began his career in Erie (PA), where he organized and conducted the Mercyhurst College Choir and Chamber Singers. He was also chosen as the conductor of the Symphonic Singers of Erie in their twenty-fifth anniversary season. After three years he moved to the Hartt School of Music in Hartford (CT) where he conducted the Hartt Chorale, the Collegiate Singers, the Hartt Touring Opera Theatre, and the University Civic Chorus and Chamber Choir, and the Collegium Musicum.

After retiring from his full-time teaching and church positions in Boston, his home base is now a 150 acre farm in Erie, which he shares with his wife soprano Susan Brooks and their dog Barkley. In September 2017 Professor Brooks was named Erie Philharmonic Chorus Director and Director of University Choirs at Mercyhurst University Erie PA. He continues his work clinicing choirs, leading choral workshops, conducting Lyricora, and overseeing the Salzburg Institute.

ELECTRONICS All electronics must be turned off or set to silent once the concert has started. PERFUMES Please be aware that many people are sensitive and/or allergic to perfumes and other fragrances. ACCESS FOR PATRONS WITH DISABILITIES The Warner Theatre is accessible by all main entrances for patrons with disabilities. Anyone needing special assistance is asked to seek an usher. HEADSETS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED The Warner Theatre has a limited number of headsets for the hearing impaired. Headsets are only functional when a sound system is employed on stage. To borrow a headset, stop by the office on the main floor in the Warner Theatre with I.D. and talk to the manager on duty. COAT RACKS The Warner Theatre provides coat racks for patrons in the main lobby and balcony hallway. PARKING Handicapped parking is available on the southeast corner of 8th and French Streets. LATE ARRIVALS Doors open approximately one hour before performance time. Concerts begin at 8PM unless otherwise noted. As a courtesy to the performers and the audience, late arrivals will be seated by an usher during the first convenient pause in the program. Patrons who must leave early are asked to do so between program works to not disturb others. LOST AND FOUND Found objects can be taken to the on-duty manager in the office on the first floor in the Warner Theatre. At concerts, lost items can be claimed at the office. To claim a lost item at any other time, call the Convention Center Authority weekdays at 814.453.7117 (M-F, 9am-5pm). www.eriephil.org
EMERGENCY MESSAGES The Convention Center Authority provides an emergency call service for doctors and others who might be called in extreme emergencies. The emergency number is 814.453.7117 (for use during concerts only). If you need to be reached during a performance, please make arrangements to be contacted through the emergency number and make sure that the caller has your seat location, including Section, Row and Seat number. An usher will contact you using this information. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES In case of a medical emergency, patrons should contact the nearest usher. Any doctor who would be willing to attend to a medical emergency, should it occur during the concert, is asked to give his/her name and seat location to the on-duty manager in the office on the main floor. RESTROOMS Restrooms are located on the main floor on either side of the refreshment bar as well as on the balcony level next to the staircase leading to the State Street lobby. Additional restrooms may be found in the French Street lobby as well as the Encore Lounge.
