Daniel Meyer Music Director

As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019.

In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets.

In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany.

As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies.

His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua.

Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

PROGRAM Notes Notes on the Program by Ken Meltzer

Eine kleine Nachtmusik (1787) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Beethoven’s A fair amount of mystery surrounds Mozart’s Serenade, Eine kleine Nachtmusik. Mozart’s own catalogue reflects that he finished the work on August 10, 1787, while the composer was in Vienna working on the second act of his opera, Don Giovanni (In this context it’s interesting to recall that in the final scene of the opera, a group of musicians plays occasional music as entertainment for the Don’s lavish banquet, offering selections from popular operas of the day, including Mozart’s own Le nozze di Figaro). No one knows the circumstances surrounding the Serenade’s composition, or whether Eine kleine Nachtmusik was in fact performed during Mozart’s lifetime.

It was Mozart himself who gave the serenade its famous title, Eine kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music). As was typical of 18th-century serenades, the work originally contained five movements, with an initial Minuet appearing between the opening Allegro and the Romanze. That movement appears to have been lost forever, and today listeners are familiar with the work’s perfect fourmovement structure. Because of its elegance, wit, charm and wealth of melodic inspiration, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik is one of the composer’s most performed and beloved works.

Eine kleine Nachtmusik is in four movements. The first (Allegro), in traditional sonata form, begins with one of the most famous themes in all of concert music. The second movement Romanze (Andante) spotlights an elegant melody introduced by the first violins. The third movement (Menuetto and Trio. Allegretto) is a stately dance in triple meter, with a sotto voce central episode.

The Rondo finale (Allegro) begins with an infectious, tripping motif that returns throughout. High spirits prevail, right to the buoyant final measures.

Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major (1721) Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) The Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 is one of six such works Bach presented to the Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg in fulfillment of a commission. It’s ironic that in all likelihood, the Margrave never heard the magnificent works that now bear his name. The Margrave employed a small ensemble of musicians, too few in numbers to encompass all the parts of the Six Concertos. Scholars believe that Bach originally composed these works not for the Margrave. Rather, he wrote them for performance at various concerts by the excellent musicians in the court of Prince Leopold in Cöthen, for whom Bach served as Kappellmeister. Bach ultimately presented these independent works as a collection to fulfill the Margrave’s commission.

According to Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, his father preferred to play the viola when leading an instrumental ensemble. It seems reasonable to assume that in performances of the Third Brandenburg Concerto, Bach played first viola and led the instrumental group that features strings in nine parts (three each of violins, violas, and cellos).

The Concerto is in three movements. In the first, vigorous sixteenth and eighth-note figure immediately presented by the violins form the basis for the entire movement. The printed score of the second movement Adagio consists of a single measure comprised of two chords. In Bach’s time, a solo cadenza may have been performed here as prelude to the finale. The final movement (Allegro) is a lively gigue.

Langsamer Satz (1905) Anton Webern (1883 - 1945) A springtime walking tour of the Austrian countryside provided the inspiration for Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz (Slow Movement) for String Quartet. Webern’s companion on the walk was Wilhemine Mörtl, whom the composer would marry in 1911. Webern intended the Langsamer Satz to be part of a complete, multimovement string quartet, but it never materialized.

When Anton Webern composed the Langsamer Satz in 1905, he was twenty-one, and a student at the University of Vienna. The previous year, Webern began studies with Arnold Schoenberg. Under Schoenberg’s tutelage Webern would, over time, abandon the late-Romantic expression found in such works as the Langsamer Satz for a minimalist style of extraordinary concentration. The totality of Webern’s published works—consisting of hundreds of chamber, orchestral, and vocal compositions—is approximately of three hours’ duration.

Webern’s imaginative and evocative deployment of the strings’ instrumental colors anticipates the more famous works of one of the 20th century’s most influential composers.

Serenade from Op. 3 No. 5 in F Major (ca. 1772) Franz Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) The String Quartet Opus 3, No. 5 is one of a series of six first published in 1777, and attributed to the great Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn. More recent scholarship however, indicates the actual creator may have been the German composer Roman Hoffstetter (1742-1815). Pizzicato Polka (1869) Johan Strauss II (1825 - 1899) The Pizzicato Polka was a collaboration between the “Waltz King,” Johann Strauss, Jr., and his brother Josef, for a concert tour of Russia. At first, Johann suggested to Josef that he compose a polka showcasing the pizzicato (plucked) string technique.

As Johann later recalled: “He did not want to do it—he was always indecisive— finally I proposed to him that the polka should be created by the two of us. He agreed, and just look—the polka caused a furore in the true sense of the word.”

The charming Pizzicato Polka remains one of the most beloved Strauss works.

Octet for Strings in E-flat Major, Opus 20 (1825) Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) The works Felix Mendelssohn composed during the second decade of his life are remarkable for their number, variety, and level of accomplishment. However, two compositions from those years stand out as creations of extraordinary genius, music that would do credit to the greatest composers at the absolute zenith of their maturity and powers. On August 6, 1826, Mendelssohn, then 17 years old, completed his brilliant Overture to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

But on October 17 of the previous year, Mendelssohn composed a chamber work that proudly stands alongside the A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture as a creation of towering genius. On that date, Mendelssohn completed his Octet for Strings, Opus 20. The 16-year-old Mendelssohn’s Octet remains one of the glories of the chamber music repertoire. It is a work of extraordinary vitality, melodic inspiration, and dramatic impact. Mendelssohn’s genius with instrumental colors is apparent in the strikingly rich sound he achieves from just eight string instruments. In 1900, German composer Max Bruch wrote of the Octet and Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture: “Both works have earned immortality, but to me the octet will always remain the greater miracle.” Mendelssohn himself admitted to Schumann that among all of his early compositions, the Octet was his favorite, one that he often recalled with great affection. As Mendelssohn remarked: “I had a most wonderful time in the writing of it.”

The Octet is in four movements. The first (Allegro moderato, ma con fuoco) is the most epic in scope, and notable throughout for its breathtaking energy and momentum. In the slow-tempo second movement (Andante) Mendelssohn employs motive fragments as the basis to explore a wide range of colors and moods, often in sharp contrast to the youthful exuberance of the opening movement. The third-movement Scherzo (Allegro leggierissimo) was, according to Mendelssohn, inspired by the “Walpurgis Night” in Goethe’s Faust:

A breeze in the leaves, a wind in the reeds,

And all is blown away.

The brilliant finale (Presto) ultimately incorporates music from the third-movement Scherzo, as the Mendelssohn Octet sprints to a whirlwind finish. Approximate performance time is 35 minutes.

The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic.

However, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have reimagined our offerings to include a virtual string camp, a database of instructional videos created by EJP coaches and Erie Philharmonic musicians, Q&A sessions with Erie Philharmonic soloists including violinist Simone Porter and cellist Nick Canellakis, masterclasses with Erie Philharmonic musicians, and so much more!

Scott Enterprises recently opened the new Hampton Inn & Suites hotel on Erie’s Bayfront, and is excited to open Oliver’s Rooftop restaurant, which will feature fine cuisine complimented by stunning views of Presque Isle Bay. This hotel and restaurant are part of the initial phase for the company’s vision of a mixed-used development among Erie’s Bayfront, Harbor Place.
