Daniel Meyer Music Director

As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019.

In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets.

In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany.

As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies.

His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua.

Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

We are so grateful that WQLN and Edinboro University have agreed to partner with us to film and broadcast our new ‘In Your Home’ series, and we hope that you will experience some of the joy we have felt in coming back together to make music after such a long hiatus.

Capriol Suite (1926) Peter Warlock (1894 - 1930)

The English composer and writer Philip Heseltine (who composed many works under the pseudonym Peter Warlock) was born in London. Heseltine was essentially a self-taught musician, although he counted English composer Frederick Delius among his mentors.

Heseltine composed numerous songs, choral works, and instrumental pieces.

His most famous work is the Capriol Suite. The Suite exists in three versions—for piano duet, string orchestra, and full orchestra.

The Capriol Suite consists of very free arrangements of melodies found in Thoinot Arbeau’s (the pen name for the French priest, Jehan Tabourot) 1589 study of Renaissance dances, entitled Orchésographie. The Suite features six brief movements.

Abdelazer Suite (1695) Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695)

Abdelazer, or The Moor’s Revenge, a play by the British author Aphra Behn (1640-1689), premiered in 1676. In 1695, English composer Henry Purcell wrote incidental music for a revival of Behn’s play. While Abdelazer fell into obscurity, Purcell’s vibrant and inventive music for the play has remained one of his most popular compositions. That popularity was enhanced by Benjamin Britten’s incorporation of the second movement Rondeau into his The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (1946).

Simple Symphony, Op. 4 (1933-4) Benjamin Britten (1913 - 1976)

In a letter to his friend, Welsh composer Grace Williams, Benjamin Britten described his latest composition:

I cannot write a single note of anything respectable at the moment, and so—on the off chance of making some money—I am dishing up some very old stuff (written some of it, over ten years ago) as a dear little school suite for strings—You see what I have come to…!

Britten composed his Simple Symphony between December 23, 1933 and February 10, 1934, and conducted the premiere on March 6. The Simple Symphony, scored for the strings of the orchestra, incorporates several melodies that Britten composed between the ages of nine and twelve. The Simple Symphony has maintained a place not only in school performances, but major concert halls as well.

Within Her Arms, by the London-born composer Anna Clyne, premiered at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, on April 7, 2009. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The composer provided the following commentary on the work, scored for string orchestra.

Within Her Arms is music for my mother, with all my love.

Irish Tune from County Derry (1913) Percy Grainger (1882 - 1961)

Percy Grainger was a remarkably prolific and versatile musician, who excelled as a composer, arranger, pianist, and conductor.

After studies in Frankfurt, Germany, the Australian-born musician moved to London. In 1914, Grainger relocated to the United States where he taught, both in Chicago and New York.

Throughout his life, Grainger took a great interest the collection, study, and arrangement of folk songs. He made several arrangements of the beloved Irish Tune from County Derry (also known as the “Londonderry Air,” and set to lyrics in the 20th century as the song “Danny Boy”), including one for two horns (optional) and strings.

St. Paul’s Suite for Strings, Op. 29, No. 2 (1912-13) Gustav Holst (1874 - 1934)

In 1905, English composer Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School, Hammersmith, a position he held for the remainder of his life. Holst completed his St. Paul’s Suite in 1913, a year before starting work on his popular orchestral composition, The Planets. Originally, the Suite included wind parts, as the composer put it, “in order to give everyone something to do.” But when the Suite was finally published, it was in its now-familiar version for string orchestra.

The brief and charming St. Paul’s Suite reflects Holst’s love for English folk music. The rich and varied string writing is a constant source of beauty and pleasure.

The Erie Philharmonic Chorus, under the leadership of Thomas Brooks, is dedicated to promoting choral singing throughout the Erie area. Through collaborative performances with the Erie Philharmonic and independent concert opportunities of its own, the EPC endeavors to offer choral music of exceptional quality.

Our membership includes young professionals, 50-year veterans of the chorus, parents, grandparents, college students, couples, first-time choral singers, and professional music educators, all drawn together by our mutual love of making choral music at a high level.

We also now offer a Junior Philharmonic Chorus for talented high school singers from across the region.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EPC has shifted to an entirely virtual format, offering instructional videos, conversations with guest soloists, and an exciting virtual recording project.

The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic.

However, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have reimagined our offerings to include a virtual string camp, a database of instructional videos created by EJP coaches and Erie Philharmonic musicians, Q&A sessions with Erie Philharmonic soloists including violinist Simone Porter and cellist Nick Canellakis, masterclasses with Erie Philharmonic musicians, and so much more!

Scott Enterprises recently opened the new Hampton Inn & Suites hotel on Erie’s Bayfront, and is excited to open Oliver’s Rooftop restaurant, which will feature fine cuisine complimented by stunning views of Presque Isle Bay. This hotel and restaurant are part of the initial phase for the company’s vision of a mixed-used development among Erie’s Bayfront, Harbor Place.
