Daniel Meyer Music Director

As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019.

In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets.

In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany.

As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies.

His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua.

Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

PROGRAM Notes Notes on the Program by Ken Meltzer

Keyboard Concerto in d minor (ca. 1738) Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)

In the late 1730s, Johann Sebastian Bach compiled a series of Six Harpsichord Concertos, BWV 1052-57. Each of the Harpsichord Concertos is a transcription of an earlier Bach work for “melody” instrument and orchestra. The Concerto in D minor, BWV 1052, is derived from an earlier (and lost) Bach violin concerto, probably dating from the composer’s prior years in Cöthen (1717-1723).

Scholarship indicates that Bach created the six Harpsichord Concertos for performance by the Leipzig Collegium Musicum. Originally founded by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1702, the Collegium Musicum was a group of Leipzig students and citizens who performed concerts within the city on a regular basis. It is possible that Bach, a superb keyboard artist, was the soloist in Collegium Musicum performances of the Harpsichord Concertos.

The Concerto opens with a tutti statement of an angular melody, leading to the first of several brilliant flights by the soloist. Typical of Baroque style, the melody constitutes the opening movement’s ritornello, a recurring presence throughout the Allegro. In addition, the use of fragments of the ritornello in some of the intervening episodes lends a heightened sense of thematic unity.

Lyric for Strings (1946) George Walker (1922 - 2018)

The internationally acclaimed composer, pianist, and educator George Walker was born in Washington, DC, on June 27, 1922. In 1945, he became the first African American graduate of Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, earning artist diplomas in both piano and composition.

That same year, Walker gave his piano recital debut at Town Hall, and made his orchestral debut as soloist in the Third Piano Concerto of Sergei Rachmaninoff, performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra and conductor Eugene Ormandy.

Walker’s teaching appointments included such institutions as Smith College, the University of Colorado, Rutgers University, and the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. In 1996, George Walker earned the Pulitzer Prize for his composition, Lilacs.

George Walker composed his Lyric for Strings as a memorial to his grandmother. The original title for the work, Lament, was modified at the request of the composer’s publisher. Lyric for Strings received its first public performance at the National Gallery in Washington, DC in 1947, with Richard Bales conducting the National Gallery Orchestra. This brief and haunting work, scored for string orchestra, has earned a prominent place in orchestral concerts and on recordings.

Last Round (1996) Osvaldo Golijov (1960 - ) Osvaldo Golijov’s Last Round was commissioned by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, who premiered the work at Sir Adrian Boult Hall on October 25, 1996, with Stefan Asbury conducting. Last Round, composed for strings, may, according to a preface in the score, be performed in three different ways, “depending on the size of the string ensemble”: (1) 9 players (two string quartets and a double-bass), (2) small string orchestra, or (3) large string orchestra.

This concert features the version for 9 players.

The composer provided the following commentary on Last Round:

Astor Piazzolla, the last great Tango composer, was at the peak of his creativity when a stroke killed him in 1992. He left us, in the words of the old tango, “without saying good bye”, and that day the musical face of Buenos Aires was abruptly frozen. The creation of that face had started a hundred years earlier from the unlikely combination of African rhythms underlying gauchos’ couplets, sung in the style of Sicilian canzonettas over an accompanying Andalucian guitar. As the years passed all converged towards the bandoneon: a small accordion-like instrument without keyboard that was invented in Germany in the 19th century to serve as a portable church organ and which, after finding its true home in the bordellos of Buenos Aires’ slums in the 1920s, went back to Europe to conquer Paris’ high society in the 1930s. Since then it reigned as the essential instrument for any Tango ensemble.

Piazzolla’s bandoneon was able to condense all the symbols of tango. The eroticism of legs and torsos in the dance was reduced to the intricate patterns of his virtuoso fingers (a simple C major scale in the bandoneon zigzags so much as to leave an inexperienced player’s fingers tangled). The melancholy of the singer’s voice was transposed to the breathing of the bandoneon’s continuous opening and closing. The macho attitude of the tangueros was reflected in his pose on stage: standing upright, chest forward, right leg on a stool, the bandoneon on top of it, being by turns raised, battered, caressed.

I composed Last Round in 1996, prompted by Geoff Nuttall and Barry Shiffman. They heard a sketch of the second movement, which I had written in 1991 upon hearing the news of Piazzolla’s stroke, and encouraged me to finish it and write another movement to complement it. The title is borrowed from a short story on boxing by Julio Cortázar, the metaphor for an imaginary chance for Piazzolla’s spirit to fight one more time (he used to get into fistfights throughout his life). The piece is conceived as an idealized bandoneon. The first movement represents the act of a violent compression of the instrument and the second a final, seemingly endless opening sigh (it is actually a fantasy over the refrain of the song My Beloved Buenos Aires, composed by the legendary Carlos Gardel in the 1930s). But Last Round is also a sublimated tango dance. Two quartets confront each other, separated by the focal bass, with violins and violas standing up as in the traditional tango orchestras. The bows fly in the air as inverted legs in crisscrossed choreography, always attracting and repelling each other, always in danger of clashing, always avoiding it with the immutability that can only be acquired by transforming hot passion into pure pattern.

Andante cantabile for Cello and String Orchestra (1871) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) In 1871 Tchaikovsky was a financially struggling composer and professor at the Moscow Conservatory. The Conservatory’s director, Nikolai Rubinstein, suggested that Tchaikovsky sponsor a concert featuring his own compositions. An orchestral concert was beyond Tchaikovsky’s financial means, and he decided instead to program a series of works for smaller performing forces. In order to create a concert program of appropriate length, Tchaikovsky composed a new work, his First String Quartet in D Major. Tchaikovsky began the Quartet in February of 1871, completing it in time for the March 28 concert, held at the Nobles’ Club in Moscow. The concert proved to be an artistic and financial success.

The Quartet’s haunting second movement (Andante cantabile) is one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved compositions. The Andante cantabile is based upon the folk song, Sidel Vanya (“Vanya sat on a sofa and smoked a pipe of tobacco”). Tchaikovsky heard and transcribed the song two years earlier, while visiting his sister in the Ukraine. Over time, Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable setting of this melody became the subject of numerous transcriptions for different kinds of performing forces.

And while Tchaikovsky ultimately became frustrated at what he viewed as the Andante cantabile’s disproportionate recognition and popularity, the music was also the source of one of his most satisfying moments. Tchaikovsky recalled that during an 1876 performance: “Perhaps I was never so flattered in my life, nor was my pride as a composer so stirred, as when Lev Tolstoy, sitting beside me listening to the Andante from my First Quartet, dissolved in tears.”

Introduction and Allegro (1905) Ernest Bloch (1857 - 1934) Elgar composed his Introduction and Allegro, Opus 47, at the request of the London Symphony Orchestra. The newly-formed ensemble invited the English composer to conduct a program of his works, and to write a new piece for the occasion.

Elgar’s dear friend August Jaeger (the inspiration for Nimrod in the 1899 “Enigma” Variations) suggested: “Why not a brilliant quick String Scherzo, or something for those fine strings only? a real bring down the house torrent of a thing such as Bach could write…” Elgar responded: “I’m doing that string thing…no working-out part but a devil of a fugue instead.” Elgar scored his Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra, a nod to the Baroque concerto grosso, and its juxtaposition of a small group of instruments (concertino) with the main body of the orchestra (ripieno). Elgar completed the work in February of 1905, and led its first performance at London’s Queens Hall on March 8.

In program notes for the premiere, Elgar described the origin of a featured melody:

…in Cardiganshire (Wales), I thought of writing a brilliant piece for string orchestra. On the cliff, between the blue sea and blue sky, thinking out my theme, there came up to me the sound of singing. The songs were too far away to reach me distinctly, but one point common to all was impressed upon me, and let me to think, perhaps wrongly, that it was a real Welsh idiom – I mean the fall of a third The lack of adequate rehearsal time for the premiere of the Introduction and Allegro led to a subpar performance and lukewarm reception. But in time, the composition established itself as one of the exemplary works for string orchestra.

The extended Introduction (Moderato) begins with a fortissimo statement by the quartet and orchestra. Later, the quartet’s viola sings the “Welsh” melody. The orchestra first violins launch the ensuing Allegro. Following the introduction of the principal thematic material Elgar (as he explained to Jaeger) replaces their expected development (“working-out”) with a brilliant contrapuntal episode. A restatement of the themes leads to the final coda, including a grand tutti proclamation of the Welsh melody.

Michael Brown Piano Michael Brown has been described as “one of the leading figures in the current renaissance of performer-composers” (The New York Times).

Winner of a 2018 Emerging Artist Award from Lincoln Center and a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant, he is an artist of the Chamber Music Soci-ety of Lincoln Center. He makes regular appearances with orchestras such as the National Phil-harmonic, the Seattle, Grand Rapids, North Carolina, Erie, and Albany symphonies, and was se-lected by pianist András Schiff to perform an international solo recital tour, making debuts in Zurich’s Tonhalle and New York’s 92nd Street Y. A prolific composer, Mr. Brown’s Piano Concerto was premiered in 2021 by the Kalamazoo Symphony. He was the composer and artist-in-residence at the New Haven Symphony for the 2017-19 seasons and a 2018 Copland House Award winner. He has appeared at the Tanglewood, Mostly Mozart, Marlboro, Ravinia, Mu-sic@Menlo, Gilmore, Tippet Rise, Sedona, Moab, Bridgehampton, and Bard music festivals and performs regularly with his longtime duo partner, cellist Nicholas Canellakis. He is the First Prize winner of the Concert Artists Guild competition, and earned degrees in piano and composition from The Juilliard School, where he studied with pianists Jerome Lowenthal and Robert McDon-ald and composers Samuel Adler and Robert Beaser. A native New Yorker, he lives there with his two 19th-century Steinway D’s, Octavia and Daria. michaelbrownmusic.com

Nicholas Canellakis Cello Hailed by The New Yorker as a “superb young soloist,” Nicholas Canellakis has become one of the most sought-after and innovative cellists of his generation, captivating audiences throughout the United States and abroad. In The New York Times his playing was praised as “impassioned ... the audience seduced by Mr. Canellakis’s rich, alluring tone.” Canellakis’s recent highlights include concerto appearances with the Albany, Delaware, Lansing, and Bangor Symphonies, the Erie Philharmonic, The Orchestra Now, and the New Haven Symphony as Artist-in-Residence; Europe and Asia tours with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, including appearances in London’s Wigmore Hall, the Louvre in Paris, the Seoul Arts Center, and the Shanghai and Taipei National Concert Halls; and recitals throughout the United States with his long-time duo collaborator, pianist-composer Michael Brown.

He made his Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the American Symphony Orchestra in 2015. Canellakis is an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, in which he performs regularly in Alice Tully Hall and on tour. He is also a regular guest artist at many of the world’s leading music festivals, including Santa Fe, Ravinia, Music@ Menlo, Bard, Bridgehampton, La Jolla, Hong Kong, Moab, Music in the Vineyards, and Saratoga Springs. In addition, he was recently named Artistic Director of Chamber Music Sedona, in Arizona.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and New England Conservatory, his teachers have included Orlando Cole, Peter Wiley, Paul Katz, and Madeleine Golz at Manhattan School of Music Precollege. He was a member of the Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two), and has also been in residence at Carnegie Hall as a member of Ensemble Connect. Filmmaking and acting are special interests of Mr. Canellakis. He has produced, directed, and starred in several short films and music videos, including his popular comedy web series “Conversations with Nick Canellakis.” His latest film, “Thin Walls,” has been nominated for awards at many prominent film festivals. The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic.

Erie’s newest hotel is now open! Scott Enterprises recently opened the new Hampton Inn & Suites hotel on Erie’s Bayfront, and is excited to open Oliver’s Rooftop restaurant, which will feature fine cuisine complimented by stunning views of Presque Isle Bay. This hotel and restaurant are part of the initial phase for the company’s vision of a mixed-used development among Erie’s Bayfront, Harbor Place.

Harbor Place will be built in phases and will include a waterfront restaurant, office space, two hotels, retail shops, parking garages, a skating rink, condominiums and apartments. Scott Enterprises will invest over $160 million in the development of Harbor Place.
