Daniel Meyer Music Director
As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019. In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets. In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany. As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies. His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua. Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. PROGRAM Notes Notes on the Program by Ken Meltzer
Concerto Grosso in A minor, Op. 6, No. 4 (1739) George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) George Frideric Handel composed his magnificent twelve Concerti Grossi, Opus 6, with remarkable (but not atypical) speed. Handel completed the entire set between September 29 and October 30, 1739. It appears that Handel intended the Concerti Grossi, Opus 6, be played during intervals of performances of his operas and oratorios. The term Concerto Grosso refers to a composition that juxtaposes a small group of instruments, the concertino, with the main body of the orchestra, the ripieno. In Handel’s Concerti Grossi, Opus 6, the concertino comprises the traditional two violins and cello. The Concerto Grosso, Opus 6, No. 4, opens with an elegant slow-tempo movement (Larghetto affetuoso). The ensuing quicksilver Allegro features brilliant contrapuntal writing. The serene third movement (Largo e piano) precedes a sprightly finale (Allegro), syncopated and in triple meter.
The Protecting Veil (1988) Sir John Tavener (1944 - 2013) The Feast of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God was instituted in the Orthodox Church to commemorate her appearance in the Church at Vlacherni (Constantinople) in the early tenth century, possibly 902. At this time of grave danger for the Greeks from Saracen invasion, Andrew, The holy fool, together with his disciple Epiphanios, during an All-Night-Vigil, saw the Mother of God; she was standing high up above them in the air, surrounded by a host of saints. She was praying earnestly and spreading out her Veil (stole) as a protective shelter over the Christians. Heartened by this vision, the Greeks withstood the Saracen assault and drove away the Saracen army. The Feast of the Protecting Veil is kept by the Orthodox Church in celebration of this event. In my piece entitled The Protecting Veil for cello and strings, I have tried to capture some of the almost cosmic power of the Mother of God. The cello represents The Mother of God and never stops singing throughout. One can think of the strings as a gigantic extension of her unending song… Having said all this, it is perfectly possible to listen to The Protecting Veil as ‘pure’ music but I think that it may be helpful if I recount what was in my mind during the composition. It is an attempt to make a lyrical ikon in sound, rather than in wood, and using the music of the cellist to paint rather than a brush. The music is highly stylised, geometrically formed and meditative in character. - John Tavener

Cello Sonata No. 3 in A Major, Op. 69 (1808) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) Beethoven completed the third of his five Sonatas for Cello and Piano in 1808, the same year the composer finished his Fifth and Sixth (“Pastorale”) Symphonies, and the two Piano Trios, Opus 70. Beethoven dedicated the Sonata to his friend, the amateur cellist Baron Ignaz von Gleichenstein. The score contains the following enigmatic Latin passage: “Inter lacrymas et luctus” (“amid tears and sorrow”). That, however, does not appear to be descriptive of the music, which, especially in the opening movement, radiates an expansive, glowing lyricism also found in such works as the Violin and Fourth Piano Concertos (1806) and the “Pastorale” Symphony. III. Adagio cantabile; Allegro vivace—The finale opens with a gorgeous slow-tempo introduction (Adagio cantabile) in E Major. A descending passage by the cello leads to its introduction of the carefree opening theme of the principal Allegro vivace, in the home key of A Major. The second principal theme comprises the cello’s dolce four-note motif and the pianist’s response. High spirits prevail during the ensuing development, recapitulation, and coda, capped by a crescendo and three forte chords.
Adagio, for string orchestra (2010) Cindy McTee (1953 - ) Adapted from my Agnus Dei for organ in the wake of events following the horror of September 11, 2001, the Adagio became the second movement of my Symphony No. 1: Ballet for Orchestra. It was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra - music director, Leonard Slatkin - and made possible by the John and June Hechinger Fund for New Orchestra Works. The Adagio gradually exposes a hauntingly beautiful melody (Ab, G, F, C, Db, Eb, Db, C) from Krzysztof Penderecki’s Polish Requiem which appears in its entirety at about three-quarters of the way through my work. Most of the material in my piece consists of two or three-note fragments taken from this melody, especially a falling half-step and subsequent whole-step emphasizing the interval of the minor third. Reflecting my interest in using both atonal and tonal materials within the same piece of music, the work begins with some tension and anguish, then moves through several sections which are introspective and peaceful. Optimism and joy finally give way at the end to a sense of uncertainty and a reference to the opening.

Concerto Grosso No. 1 (1924-5) Ernest Bloch (1880 - 1959) From 1920-25, the Swiss-born composer Ernest Bloch served as Director of the Cleveland Institute of Music. In 1924 (the same year he became a US citizen) Bloch began his Concerto Grosso No. 1 for Piano and String Orchestra. Bloch completed the work the following year. This was during a time when the issue of atonal music inspired fierce debate. Bloch, never shy about voicing his opinions, stated: “The theory of atonality in itself is an anomaly where genuine music is concerned—a theory, frankly, as impractical as it is fundamentally stupid.” In the Concerto Grosso No. 1, Bloch employs a decidedly tonal idiom. A sense of tradition is further reinforced by the use of the concerto grosso structure, popular during the Baroque era. A concerto grosso juxtaposes a small group of instruments (concertino) with the main ensemble (ripieno, or concerto grosso). During the course of Bloch’s Concerto Grosso, the piano and strings perform both functions. The Concerto Grosso is in four movements. The first is a vigorous Prelude (Allegro energico e pesante), featuring some brief solo turns for the pianist. The third movement, Pastorale and Rustic Dances (Assai lento; Allegro), juxtaposes serene episodes with music notable for its vibrancy and shifting meters.

Michael Brown Piano Michael Brown has been described as “one of the leading figures in the current renaissance of performer-composers” (The New York Times). Winner of a 2018 Emerging Artist Award from Lincoln Center and a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant, he is an artist of the Chamber Music Soci-ety of Lincoln Center. He makes regular appearances with orchestras such as the National Phil-harmonic, the Seattle, Grand Rapids, North Carolina, Erie, and Albany symphonies, and was se-lected by pianist András Schiff to perform an international solo recital tour, making debuts in Zurich’s Tonhalle and New York’s 92nd Street Y. A prolific composer, Mr. Brown’s Piano Concerto was premiered in 2021 by the Kalamazoo Symphony. He was the composer and artist-in-residence at the New Haven Symphony for the 2017-19 seasons and a 2018 Copland House Award winner. He has appeared at the Tanglewood, Mostly Mozart, Marlboro, Ravinia, Mu-sic@Menlo, Gilmore, Tippet Rise, Sedona, Moab, Bridgehampton, and Bard music festivals and performs regularly with his longtime duo partner, cellist Nicholas Canellakis. He is the First Prize winner of the Concert Artists Guild competition, and earned degrees in piano and composition from The Juilliard School, where he studied with pianists Jerome Lowenthal and Robert McDon-ald and composers Samuel Adler and Robert Beaser. Nicholas Canellakis Cello Hailed by The New Yorker as a “superb young soloist,” Nicholas Canellakis has become one of the most sought-after and innovative cellists of his generation, captivating audiences throughout the United States and abroad. In The New York Times his playing was praised as “impassioned ... the audience seduced by Mr. Canellakis’s rich, alluring tone.” Canellakis’s recent highlights include concerto appearances with the Albany, Delaware, Lansing, and Bangor Symphonies, the Erie Philharmonic, The Orchestra Now, and the New Haven Symphony as Artist-in-Residence; Europe and Asia tours with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, including appearances in London’s Wigmore Hall, the Louvre in Paris, the Seoul Arts Center, and the Shanghai and Taipei National Concert Halls; and recitals throughout the United States with his long-time duo collaborator, pianist-composer Michael Brown. He made his Carnegie Hall concerto debut with the American Symphony Orchestra in 2015. Canellakis is an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, in which he performs regularly in Alice Tully Hall and on tour. He is also a regular guest artist at many of the world’s leading music festivals, including Santa Fe, Ravinia, Music@ Menlo, Bard, Bridgehampton, La Jolla, Hong Kong, Moab, Music in the Vineyards, and Saratoga Springs. In addition, he was recently named Artistic Director of Chamber Music Sedona, in Arizona. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and New England Conservatory, his teachers have included Orlando Cole, Peter Wiley, Paul Katz, and Madeleine Golz at Manhattan School of Music Precollege. He was a member of the Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two), and has also been in residence at Carnegie Hall as a member of Ensemble Connect. Filmmaking and acting are special interests of Mr. Canellakis. He has produced, directed, and starred in several short films and music videos, including his popular comedy web series “Conversations with Nick Canellakis.” His latest film, “Thin Walls,” has been nominated for awards at many prominent film festivals. The Erie Philharmonic Chorus, under the leadership of Thomas Brooks, is dedicated to promoting choral singing throughout the Erie area. Through collaborative performances with the Erie Philharmonic and independent concert opportunities of its own, the EPC endeavors to offer choral music of exceptional quality. Our membership includes young professionals, 50-year veterans of the chorus, parents, grandparents, college students, couples, first-time choral singers, and professional music educators, all drawn together by our mutual love of making choral music at a high level. We also now offer a Junior Philharmonic Chorus for talented high school singers from across the region. The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic. However, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have reimagined our offerings to include a virtual string camp, a database of instructional videos created by EJP coaches and Erie Philharmonic musicians, Q&A sessions with Erie Philharmonic soloists including violinist Simone Porter and cellist Nick Canellakis, masterclasses with Erie Philharmonic musicians, and so much more! Erie’s newest hotel is now open! Scott Enterprises recently opened the new Hampton Inn & Suites hotel on Erie’s Bayfront, and is excited to open Oliver’s Rooftop restaurant, which will feature fine cuisine complimented by stunning views of Presque Isle Bay. This hotel and restaurant are part of the initial phase for the company’s vision of a mixed-used development among Erie’s Bayfront, Harbor Place. Harbor Place will be built in phases and will include a waterfront restaurant, office space, two hotels, retail shops, parking garages, a skating rink, condominiums and apartments.
