Daniel Meyer Music Director
As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019. In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets. In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany. As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies. His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua. Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

PROGRAM Notes Notes on the Program by Ken Meltzer
Ancient Airs and Dances (1931) Ottorino Respighi (1879 - 1936) The Italian composer Ottorino Respighi is best known for his “Roman Trilogy.” The three orchestral tone poems—Fountains of Rome (1916), Pines of Rome (1924), and Roman Festivals (1928) all boast huge symphonic forces, masterfully employed to depict the sights and life of the historic Italian city. After Respighi completed his “Roman Trilogy,” he told his wife: “Now I am much more interested in small orchestras and chamber ensembles.” And indeed, in 1927, the year before Roman Festivals, Respighi demonstrated his magic with reduced orchestral forces in his Trittico botticelliano (Three Botticelli Pictures), inspired by paintings by the great Italian Renaissance artist, Sandro Botticelli. In 1931, Respighi composed yet another masterpiece for small orchestra based upon 16th-century artistic expression, his Third Set of Ancient Airs and Dances. Respighi completed the first two Sets in, respectively, 1917 and 1923. Respighi’s Sets of Ancient Airs and Dances are beautiful orchestral arrangements of Italian and French lute music from the 16th and 17th centuries. Respighi found most of his material from lute pieces transcribed for the guitar and published by the Italian musicologist, Oscar Chilesotti. Set III of the Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for string orchestra, is in four movements. This concert omits the second movement. The first movement, Italiana (Andantino), by an anonymous composer, ca. 1600, is a lovely song in ¾ time. The third movement is a Siciliana (Andantino), a slow-tempo song of Sicilian origin, in this case authored by an Anonymous 16th-century composer. The finale is a Passacaglia (Maestoso—Vivace), by Lodovico Roncalli, from 1692.
String Quartet (1873) Giuseppe Verdi (1813 - 1901) In the winter of 1872-3, Giuseppe Verdi traveled to Naples to supervise productions of his operas Don Carlo and Aida. The celebrated soprano Teresa Stolz was scheduled to sing Elisabetta in Don Carlo and the title role in Aida. But Stolz became ill, necessitating the postponement of the operas’ performances. Verdi used the unexpected hiatus to compose a String Quartet. The Quartet received its premiere on April 1, 1873, at the Naples Hotel della Crocelle where Verdi was residing. Verdi wrote: “I’ve written a Quartet in my leisure moments in Naples. I had it performed one evening in my house, without attaching the least importance to it and without inviting anyone in particular…I don’t know whether the Quartet is beautiful or ugly, but I do know that it’s a Quartet!” Verdi’s String Quartet, the Italian composer’s only purely instrumental work, has long enjoyed the admiration of performers and audiences alike. This concert features the Quartet’s opening Allegro, notable for its wealth of thematic material and contrasts of mood.

String Sonata No. 3 in C (ca. 1804) Gioachino Rossini (1792 - 1868) Gioachino Rossini is universally acknowledged as one of the towering figures of the 19th-century lyric theater. His many operas include such comic masterpieces as The Italian Girl in Algiers (1813), The Barber of Seville (1816), and Cinderella (1817). Rossini’s genius in more serious fare has also enjoyed greater recognition in the past several decades, thanks to successful productions of such operas as Semiramide (1823) and William Tell (1829). Rossini’s first opera, The Marriage Contract, was still six years away when, in 1804, he composed his Six Sonatas for Strings. Rossini was only twelve at the time. Nevertheless, the Sonatas reveal a musician of considerable fluency, charm, and humor, thereby anticipating the operatic masterpieces for which Rossini is most beloved. The Sonata in C was originally scored for a quartet of two violins, cello, and bass. Often however, as in these concerts, the work is performed by string orchestra. The Sonata opens with a sparkling, lyrical Allegro. The ensuing Andante imparts a more introspective and somber mood. The graceful finale (Moderato) is in theme and variations form.
Sonata in G for Oboe and Piano (ca. 1728) Giovanni Boni (ca. 18th Century) The Sonata in G is a piece edited and arranged by Evelyn Rothwell (1911-2008), a distinguished English oboist, and wife of conductor Sir John Barbirolli. For the Sonata, Rothwell turned to a series of six sonatas, published in England around 1728, collectively titled “Solos for a German Flute, Hoboy or Violin compos’d by Sigr. Giovanni Boni”. The history and life of the named composer continues to remain a matter of speculation. Rothwell extracted four movements from the publication, and created a charming work in the popular Sonata da chiesa (Church Sonata) Baroque structure, alternating slow and quick-tempo movements (Preludio. Largo, Allegro, Alla Siciliana, Allegro).
Cristantemi (1890) Giacomo Puccini (1858 - 1924) On January 18, 1890, Amadeo, the second son of Italian King Victor Emanuel II, died. Puccini wrote a single-movement piece in memory of Amadeo, a string quartet entitled Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums). At the time, Giacomo Puccini was at work on Manon Lescaut, an operatic adaptation of the 1731 novel by Abbé Prévost. Many of Puccini’s associates feared that his Manon Lescaut would suffer in comparison to Jules Massenet’s 1884 opera based upon the same subject. Puccini remained undeterred. As he put it: “Massenet feels it as a Frenchman with the powder and the minuets; I shall feel it as an Italian, with desperate passion.” And indeed, the premiere of Manon Lescaut, at the Teatro Regio in Turin on February 1, 1893, proved the be the greatest triumph of Puccini’s career. The Turin audience called Puccini to the stage 25 times during the performance, and at the opera’s conclusion, the composer received 40 curtain calls. The “desperate passion” that Puccini mentioned, as well as the lyrical genius so evident in such operas as Manon Lescaut, La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot, may also be heard in Crisantemi. Indeed, music from Puccini’s Crisantemi made its way into the composer’s Manon Lescaut. This concert features a transcription for string orchestra of the brief work for string quartet.

Toccata for Bassoon and Piano (1974) Nino Rota (1911 - 1979) The Italian musician Nino Rota is most celebrated for his many film scores, composed for such directors as Fellini, Visconti, Zeffirelli, and Coppola. But Rota was also a prolific and highly successful composer of concert music and opera. Rota’s 1974 Toccata is derived from the composer’s Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra. The brief work features spirited writing for both the bassoon and piano.
Concerto for Strings ‘Ala Rustica’ (ca. 1725) Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) Antonio Vivaldi’s compositions include numerous chamber works, sacred vocal music, and operas. But it is in the realm of the concerto that Vivaldi exerted his most profound influence. Vivaldi composed more than 500 concertos (including the beloved The Four Seasons) in which he explored a wide variety of solo instruments and instrumental combinations. The Concerto for Strings in G Major, RV151 is a work without soloists. Rather the entire string ensemble takes center stage. The Concerto RV151 carries the nickname “Alla rustica” (“in a rustic style”). The work is in Vivaldi’s standard three-movement fast—slow—fast structure. A vibrant Presto and Allegro frame the brief slow-tempo Allegro.
Danna Sundet Oboe Danna Sundet serves as full Professor of Oboe at Kent State University. She is Artistic Coordinator of the Kent Blossom Music Festival. Her artistry, broad range and versatility has its roots in her exotic upbringing. She grew up in Brazil, the Canary Islands, and Texas, speaking three languages fluently from early childhood. Danna moved to Cleveland in 1982 to study with John Mack and stayed. She received her B.M. from the Cleveland Institute of Music and her M.M. from Kent State University. Since 1987, Danna has been the principal oboist and regular featured soloist with The Erie Philharmonic. She is a founding member of Panoramico’s, a Cleveland chamber ensemble and serves as coprincipal with the Trinity Chamber Orchestra and the Akron Baroque Orchestra. As a soloist and chamber musician she regularly collaborates with world renown musicians. She has recorded three CD’s with Panoramico’s, four CD’s with WorldView International (now known as Ancient Path). She records regularly for Ludwig Publishing Company and can be heard on numerous educational CD’s. In 2012 she created the K/BM recording label, and recorded a chamber music CD with K/BM faculty using Five/Four Productions. Danna specializes in performing in Bach Festivals, where she is a featured soloist on the oboe, oboe d’amore and the English Horn. These festivals include the prestigious Carmel Bach Festival and the Baldwin-Wallace Bach Festival. Sundet has performed as extra with the Cleveland Orchestra as well as the Cleveland Pops Orchestra and the symphonies of Akron, Canton and Charleston, WV. She served as oboist with the former Cleveland Opera and Cleveland Ballet, and has served as principal oboe for touring ballet companies which include the National Ballet of Canada, the Houston Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Miami City Ballet. In 2008 by invitation of the conductor, she was one of several performers from the US at the Cayman Islands Arts Festival. Ms. Sundet performs regularly each summer with the prestigious Bellingham Festival of Music in Bellingham, Washington.

Danna Sundet is the musical Director of the John Mack Legacy Oboe Camp in Little Switzerland, NC, having had the honor of being chosen for that role by her oboist colleagues from all over the United States. Additionally, she is administering the archives and musical library of the late John Mack. In November, 2006 she organized an unprecedented concert of over 100 world renowned musicians who performed in Severance Hall as tribute and memorial for the late John Mack. She produced and performed on the John Mack Memorial CD. Mrs. Sundet’s enthusiastic and motivational style of teaching and her clear and logical approach to musical instruction heralds her as one of the most prolific and influential teachers of oboe students in the United States. Her students are dynamic soloists, chamber musicians and section players. She models to her students a high level of mastery, musical integrity and a hard work ethic that encourages them to become successful artists, teachers, arts managers and instrument repair technicians throughout the United States.
Laura Koepke Bassoon Laura Koepke is Professor of Bassoon at The State University of New York at Fredonia, where she began teaching in 2007. In addition to her role as principal bassoonist of the Erie Philharmonic (since 2011) she is principal bassoonist of the CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra, where she also performed as concerto soloist in 2014 and 2015, and performs with the Carmel Bach Festival Orchestra in the summers. Prior to Fredonia, Laura lived in New York City where she enjoyed an active freelance career. She performed numerous concerts with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, on European and US tours, and at home in Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. She has also performed with orchestras such as the American Composers Orchestra, New York Pops, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, American Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the New York City Opera. From 1998 to 2009, Laura was a member of the internationally acclaimed woodwind quintet, Quintet of the Americas. Three recordings with the quintet include “Dancing in Columbia” (MSR Classics,) “Karel Husa-Recollections” (New World Records,) and “Sounds of Brazil” (MSR Classics). Laura has performed as a guest artist with Zephyros Winds, North Country Chamber Players, Sequitur, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She has performed at many summer festivals, including the Bard Festival, Bang on a Can, Festival of the Hamptons, Lincoln Center Festival, and with the Chautauqua Symphony. Previous teaching positions include New York University, Manhattan School of Music Pre-college, Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, and Western Connecticut State University. Laura graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College/Conservatory of Music, and received their Alumni Achievement Award in 2005. She holds a Master’s Degree and Artist Diploma from the Yale University School of Music.

Beth Etter Piano Dr. Elizabeth Etter holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Harpsichord performance and a Master of Music as a double major in Collaborative Piano and Harpsichord performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Anne Epperson and Doris Ornstein. She graduated from Allegheny College with a B.A., where she subsequently served on the piano faculty while maintaining a thriving independent studio from which many students were launched with illustrious careers. She founded the Summer Music Festival and Music Outreach Program at Allegheny College and served as Executive and Artistic Director of the celebrated international festival for young chamber musicians. She has performed on many stages throughout the United States including the Chautauqua Institution, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Carnegie Music Hall. She has mentored and taught hundreds of young performers, and has served as a juror for national and international competitions, presented arts-in-education workshops for preschool through college audiences, and moderated as a panelist for national music conferences. Her performances and interviews have been aired on WQED, WCLV, and WQLN. Specializing in early keyboard performance and chamber music, her passion lies in the collaboration and communication involved in playing chamber music. Her performances include the Erie Philharmonic, Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Chautauqua Chamber Orchestra, Pittsburgh Baroque Ensemble, Cleveland Camerata, Erie Chamber Orchestra, and the Holter Chamber Music Festival in Italy. She has served as piano faculty at Edinboro University and as Staff Pianist at Mercyhurst University and Duquesne University.
I-Fei Chen Piano Born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States in 1994, I-Fei Chen has pursued the unusual goal of achieving success on both piano and clarinet. Currently the Staff Pianist coordinator at SUNY Fredonia, Ms. Chen also serves as competition accompanist of the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Competition in Buffalo, and as a pianist for the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Ms. Chen has appeared as a recital pianist with numerous world-renowned soloists and members of prestigious orchestras in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Cleveland, as well as the National Symphony Orchestra and Air Force Concert Band. A lecturer in Clarinet at SUNY Fredonia, Ms. Chen earned her Graduate Performance Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree in Clarinet Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with Steven Barta. She earned her Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance with Dr. John Weigand at West Virginia University. As clarinetist, she has performed at the Kennedy Center, has collaborated with numerous renowned artists such as the world’s most recorded pianist Jeno Jandó, and has appeared as a soloist with numerous ensembles including the West Virginia University Faculty Chamber Group, The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, The Washington Opera Orchestra, Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, and The Taipei National Symphony Orchestra. She took first prize in the Baltimore Music Club Competition, first prize of the Taipei Symphony Young Artist Concerto Competition, the first prize of the West Virginia University concerto competition, and was a finalist in the Olga Koussevitzky Competition in New York and the Yale Gordon Concerto Competition at The Peabody Conservatory.

The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic. Scott Enterprises recently opened the new Hampton Inn & Suites hotel on Erie’s Bayfront, and is excited to open Oliver’s Rooftop restaurant, which will feature fine cuisine complimented by stunning views of Presque Isle Bay. This hotel and restaurant are part of the initial phase for the company’s vision of a mixed-used development among Erie’s Bayfront, Harbor Place. Harbor Place will be built in phases and will include a waterfront restaurant, office space, two hotels, retail shops, parking garages, a skating rink, condominiums and apartments.
