Daniel Meyer Music Director
As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019. In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets. In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany. As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies. His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua. Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

PROGRAM Notes Notes on the Program by Ken Meltzer
Serenade for Strings Op. 48 (1880) Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) In a letter of October 22, 1880 to his patron Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky announced the composition of two works; the Serenade for Strings in C Major Opus 48, and the 1812 Overture, Opus 49. Tchaikovsky made no secret of his preference:
The overture will be very loud and noisy, but I wrote it without warmth or love so it will probably not have any artistic merit. But the Serenade, by contrast, I wrote from an inner compulsion; it is deeply felt and for that reason, I venture to think, is not without real merit. Tchaikovsky’s publisher referred the score to Nikolay Rubinstein, founder of the Moscow Conservatory. When Tchaikovsky paid a visit to the Conservatory on December 3, the musicians surprised him with a performance of the Serenade. The first public performance of the work took place the following year in St. Petersburg on October 30, 1881, at a Russian Musical Society concert, led by Eduard Nápravník. The performance was a brilliant success, and included an encore of the second-movement Valse. Throughout the remainder of his life, Tchaikovsky maintained a strong affection for his Serenade. He frequently programmed the work as part of his conducting tours, invariably to great audience and critical acclaim. The Serenade continues to impress as one of Tchaikovsky’s finest works. This concert features the Serenade’s second and fourth movements. The second movement (Valse. Moderato. Tempo di Valse) is one of Tchaikovsky’s most beguiling waltzes. The final movement (Finale. Tema russo. Andante—Allegro con spirito) is based upon two Russian folk melodies. The slow-tempo introduction of the work’s opening movement appears, just prior to the Serenade’s rousing close.
Appollo (1947) Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971) In 1927, the American arts patron Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge commissioned Igor Stravinsky to compose a new ballet for performance the following year at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The only limitation placed upon Stravinsky was that the piece would last no more than 30 minutes. Stravinsky was delighted, as it allowed him:
to carry out an idea, which had long tempted me, to compose a ballet founded on moments or episodes in Greek mythology plastically interpreted by dancing of the so-called classical school. I chose as theme Apollo Musagetes—that is, Apollo as master of the Muses, inspiring each of them with her own art. I reduced their number to three, selecting from among them Calliope, Polyhymnia, and Terpischore as being the most characteristic representatives of choreographic art. Calliope, receiving the stylus and tablets from Apollo, personifies poetry and rhythm; Polyhymnia, finger on lips, represents mime…Finally, Terpsichore, combining in herself both the rhythm of poetry and the eloquence of gesture, reveals dancing to the world, and thus among the muses takes the place of honor beside the Musagetes. Stravinsky conceived his Apollo ballet as one in which “the very essence of this art reveals itself in all its purity.” Such a “purity” of approach encompassed to the sets, costumes, and choreography. Likewise, Stravinsky sought to create a musical expression “of an analogous character.” And so, Stravinsky eschewed the rhythmically forceful and dissonant sound world of his path-breaking 1913 ballet The Rite of Spring for a decidedly tonal, lyrical score, performed by a string orchestra.

The world premiere of Apollon musagète took place on April 27, 1928, at the Library of Congress’s Coolidge Theater. After the Paris premiere on June 12, Stravinsky wrote: “My work was very well received, and its success was greater than I had expected, seeing that the music of Apollo lacked those elements which evoke the enthusiasm of the public at first hearing.” Musicians, dancers, and audiences continue to treasure the noble beauty of Stravinsky’s Apollon musagète.
Cello Sonata in C major, Op. 119 (1949) Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) On December 21, 1947 at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Mstislav Rostropovich performed a recital that included Sergei Prokofiev’s Cello Concerto, Opus 58 (1938). Prokofiev, who was in the audience, came backstage and told Rostropovich that he would rewrite the piece. Prokofiev kept his promise, resulting in the composer’s Sinfonia concertante, Opus 125 (1952) premiered by Rostropovich. But prior to completing that work, Prokofiev composed a Sonata for Cello and Piano for Rostropovich. Prokofiev sent the score to the cellist, and later invited Rostropovich to visit at the composer’s country home. In “Prokofiev As I Knew Him”, Rostropovich described his arrival:
As our car turned into to the gates I saw Sergei Sergeyevich coming to meet us. He was dressed in a bright red dressing gown with a towel wound turban-like around his head. A flock of hens came cackling after him—he had evidently been feeding them. “Good-day, sirs,” he said with a grin, adding, “excuse the rural get-up.” Rostropovich was accompanied by musicologist Levon Avtomyan, to whom Prokofiev dedicated the Sonata. Rostropovich and pianist Sviatoslav Richter performed the world premiere of the Prokofiev Cello Sonata on March 1, 1950, once again in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Rostropovich and Prokofiev became dear friends. Sad to say, their friendship was short-lived. Prokofiev, who had been in fragile health for some time, died on March 5, 1953 (the same day as his longtime tormentor, Joseph Stalin), at the age of 61. Rostropovich said of his friend:
Observing Sergei Prokofiev one was constantly amazed at the harmonious personality of this man who was at once a great composer and a human being with an ageless, crystal-pure spirit. My association with this man will always remain one of the brightest memories of my life. The Cello Sonata is in three movements. The opening movement (Andante grave) is lyrical for the greater part. But there are virtuoso moments as well, most notably toward movement’s close, prior to a hushed resolution. Despite its Moderato tempo marking, the second movement serves as the Sonata’s cheerful scherzo, with a lovely central episode (Andante dolce). The finale (Allegro, ma non troppo) juxtaposes vigorous music with an eerie and delicate sequence (Andantino) for muted cello. The Sonata concludes with a grand heroic passage.
String Symphony No. 1, “Memoria de la Luz” (2013) Lera Auerbach (1973 - ) The Russian-born pianist and composer Lera Auerbach defected the Soviet Union in 1991, while in the midst of a concert tour of the United States. Auerbach subsequently received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. Lera Auerbach has distinguished herself as a concert pianist, composer, and author of international acclaim. Auerbach’s String Symphony No. 1, “Memoria de la Luz”, was commissioned by the Düsseldorf Symphony. The premiere took place in Berkeley, California, on May 23, 2013, performed by the New Century Chamber Orchestra. The idea for the work first presented itself to Auerbach while she was composing her Second String Quartet. Auerbach saw the potential for material from that Quartet to become part of a composition for string orchestra. The Quartet’s name, “Memoria de la Luz” (“Memory of Light”), is an invitation for the listener to explore memories, and the inner, primordial light that exist within each of us.

String Quartet No. 2 (1881) Alexander Borodin (1833 - 1887) Alexander Borodin made his living not as a composer, but a chemist. Borodin’s scientific career was quite distinguished. He was a prominent researcher and lecturer at the Medico-Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg. It’s not surprising that his schedule made composition difficult. Borodin once confided to a friend: “I was never able to concentrate upon composition except during my summer holiday, or when some ailment compelled me to keep to my rooms.” Despite these obstacles, such works as Borodin’s two Symphonies (1867, 1876), the two String Quartets (1879, 1881), his “Musical Picture” In the Steppes of Central Asia (1880), and the opera Prince Igor (1887) demonstrate a genuine and individual talent for melody and instrumental color. Borodin composed his Second String Quartet during the summer of 1881, while vacationing in the country. The Quartet is in four movements. This concert features the third movement Nocturne (Andante). The hauntingly beautiful principal theme later became the basis for the song “And this is My Beloved,” part of the hit Broadway musical, Kismet (1953).
Erica Snowden-Rodriguez Cello Erica Snowden-Rodriguez is a Venezuelan-American cellist, originally from Buffalo, New York. Since moving to Ohio in 2005 to study at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Erica has led a very active career as a performer and teaching artist in the regions of Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. They are the principal cellist of both the Akron Symphony Orchestra and the Erie Philharmonic. Erica also performs in a variety of chamber music and recital settings within the community and abroad. Since 2015, they have toured nationally with Sphinx Virtuosi, a chamber orchestra composed of the nations’ top Latinx and Black string players. Erica has appeared as a performer and lecturer at many highly-regarded venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Cleveland Museum of Art, and many others. Snowden-Rodriguez has also competed nationally and was a semi-finalist in the senior division at the Sphinx Competition in 2008 and 2011. In addition to an active performance career, Erica is a passionate music educator and advocate for access, inclusion and equity in the classical music field. Snowden-Rodriguez is a member of the artist council for the Nation Alliance for Audition Support, an unprecedented national initiative to increase diversity in American orchestras, and they have served as an advisor on statements regarding racial justice for the League of American Orchestras. In addition to this work, they teach private lessons in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Erica holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in performance and Suzuki pedagogy from the Cleveland Institute of Music. They currently reside in Akron, Ohio with partner, Samantha and their adorable parrot, Gomez.

The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic. However, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have reimagined our offerings to include a virtual string camp, a database of instructional videos created by EJP coaches and Erie Philharmonic musicians, Q&A sessions with Erie Philharmonic soloists including violinist Simone Porter and cellist Nick Canellakis, masterclasses with Erie Philharmonic musicians, and so much more!
