Daniel Meyer Music Director
As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019. In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets. In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany. As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies. His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua. Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

Welcome Welcome to our 20-21 Season! While it will look like none other in our orchestra’s history, we want you to know that we are taking every step possible to provide you with the best concert experiences that we can safely present at this time. We are so grateful that WQLN and Edinboro University have agreed to partner with us to film and broadcast our new ‘In Your Home’ series, and we hope that you will experience some of the joy we have felt in coming back together to make music after such a long hiatus. The music you will hear in each program this fall centers around a specific part of the world. It has been eye and ear-opening for us to get to know these works in this intimate televised format, and I hope that you will also enjoy the opportunity to get to know a bit more about the composers, their music, and our orchestra. Erie Philharmonic Brass Ensemble Hello, my name is Ken Heinlein, and I’m the Principal Tuba of the Erie Philharmonic. For this season’s holiday concerts, I was also thrilled to serve as the conductor for the Erie Philharmonic Brass Ensemble. The Erie Philharmonic Brass Ensemble is a small but mighty contingent of just the brass players of the Erie Philharmonic. Great orchestras, like the one we have in Erie, are only as strong as the sections that make them up--and the brass section of the Erie Philharmonic is a very special group. I chose music that allows the brass to bring home the joy of the season with the kind of festive sound that only comes from a group of brass instruments. More than that, however, I hope you hear through our performance our sheer joy--at being a part of this Philharmonic family and at the chance to share our performance with all of you for the holidays. From all of us, we wish you a warm, safe, and joyful holiday season! - Ken Heinlein Principal Tuba Ken Heinlein is the Principal Tuba of the Erie Philharmonic and also serves as Director of the Brass Choir at the Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music. He is currently a doctoral candidate (DMA) at the University of Michigan, having previously earned his Masters degree (MM) at the Cleveland Institute of Music and his Bachelors of Music at Central Michigan University. In addition to his performance with the Erie Philharmonic, Mr. Heinlein is also Principal Tuba of the Akron Symphony Orchestra and CityMusic Cleveland. Additionally, he performs each summer as Principal Tuba of the Blossom Festival Band. He has also appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Grand Rapids Symphony, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra; he also plays regularly with the Cleveland Orchestra Brass Quintet. Mr. Heinlein teaches both tuba and euphonium at the Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music, where he also coaches brass chamber music and teaches the brass methods course to music educators. Additionally, he teaches at Kent State University, where he is also a member of the Kent Brass Quintet. Mr. Heinlein previously taught at Case Western Reserve University, where he taught both tuba and euphonium and was the director of the Case Western Brass Choir. Rounds (1944) David Diamond (1915 - 2005) David Diamond is revered as one of America’s most prolific and successful composers. At a time when many composers were exploring avant-garde forms of expression, David Diamond embraced the romantic tradition as the foundation of his works: “It is my strong feeling that a romantically inspired contemporary music, tempered by reinvigorated classical technical formulas is the way out of the present period of creative chaos in music…To me, the romantic spirit in music is important because it is timeless.”

David Diamond remained true to his creed. His numerous works, spanning the gamut of chamber, orchestral, and vocal compositions, display an uncommon lyric gift, expressed in the context of an evocative instrumental palette and mastery of formal structure. One of Diamond’s most beloved compositions is his work for strings, Rounds. Diamond composed the work in 1944 at the request of Dimitri Mitropoulos, Music Director of the Minneapolis (now, Minnesota) Symphony Orchestra. Maple Leaf Rag (1899) Season Sponsor Scott Joplin (1868 - 1917) In the 1890s, ragtime began sweeping the United States. The popular musical genre’s name derives from its prevalent syncopated, or “ragged” rhythms. Gold proved sponsors Ragtime to be the precursor to jazz, which emerged after World War I. The leading ragtime musician was the composer and pianist Scott Joplin, born near the Texas-Louisiana border in 1868. Joplin, dubbed “The King of Ragtime” catapulted to fame with the 1899 publication of his composition, the Maple Leaf Rag. The title may have been a tribute to the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, Missouri, where Joplin performed. Joplin’s beloved composition for solo piano has been featured in many different arrangements. This concert features William Zinn’s arrangement for strings.

George Gershwin (1898 - 1937) When George Gershwin composed Lullaby, he was barely twenty years old, but already a success on Tin Pan Alley and Broadway. At the time, Gershwin was Mediawith andthe in-kind support studying Hungarian émigré Edward Kilenyi. Gershwin wrote the work as a composition exercise, scoring it for string quartet. The work has also been arranged for string orchestra. Cast in A—B—A form, the brief Lullaby features the beguiling melodic genius and masterful blending of classical and jazz elements evident in such Gershwin masterpieces as Rhapsody in Blue (1924), An American in Paris (1928), and Porgy and Bess (1935).

The Erie Philharmonic Chorus, under the leadership of Thomas Brooks, is dedicated to promoting choral singing throughout the Erie area. Through collaborative performances with the Erie Philharmonic and independent concert opportunities of its own, the EPC endeavors to offer choral music of exceptional quality. Our membership includes young professionals, 50-year veterans of the chorus, parents, grandparents, college students, couples, first-time choral singers, and professional music educators, all drawn together by our mutual love of making choral music at a high level. We also now offer a Junior Philharmonic Chorus for talented high school singers from across the region. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EPC has shifted to an entirely virtual format, offering instructional videos, conversations with guest soloists, and an exciting virtual recording project. The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic. However, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have reimagined our offerings to include a virtual string camp, a database of instructional videos created by EJP coaches and Erie Philharmonic musicians, Q&A sessions with Erie Philharmonic soloists including violinist Simone Porter and cellist Nick Canellakis, masterclasses with Erie Philharmonic musicians, and so much more!
