Daniel Meyer Music Director
As Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic and Artistic Director of the Westmoreland Symphony and Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence and keen musical intellect. Recently named Music Director of the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Meyer took the helm of this historic summer music festival in July 2019. In addition to working with world-renowned soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin, Sharon Isbin, Gil Shaham, Jeremy Denk, Daniil Trifonov, Midori, and Emanuel Ax, Mr. Meyer has commissioned new works by Michael Torke, Vivian Fung, and Zhou Tian. With a deep passion for connecting with audiences, Mr. Meyer continues to develop strong ties with the community through frequent radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews, music talks, appearances in local schools, and speaking from the concert stage. He has developed a brand new series of filmed performances with the Erie Philharmonic, broadcast on WQLN and streamed worldwide. He also leads the WSO in livestreamed concerts this season from the Palace Theatre and a groundbreaking virtual performance of Shostakovich’s String Symphony with the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and Verb Ballets. In his role as Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, Meyer has embarked on a recording project of the concertos of Lynn Purse and collaborates with pianist David Alan Wehr and bass-baritone Guenko Guechev. Meyer recently recorded the music of Hanson, Diamond, and Daugherty for the Bavarian Radio with the Bamberger Symphoniker, and his recent guest appearances include the Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, Württembergische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and the Nuremberg Symphony in Germany. As part of his highly-acclaimed tenure as Music Director of the Asheville Symphony, Mr. Meyer created the Asheville Amadeus Festival, featuring sold-out weeks of film, lectures, community events, and concerts centered around the music of Mozart and pianist Emmanuel Ax in 2015 and violinist Midori in 2017. In recent seasons he has frequently conducted the Rochester Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony, as well as guest engagements with the Indianapolis, Columbus, Phoenix, Eugene, Alabama, and Knoxville Symphonies. His critically-acclaimed European debut took place with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra and violinist Thomas Zehetmaier, and he returned to Germany soon after for concerts with the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, and to Austria with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra. Mr. Meyer’s summer festival appearances have included the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom, the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals, the Chautauqua Festival, Brevard Music Center, and Lakeside Chautauqua. Upon the invitation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Meyer was named Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, where he served until 2009. A native of Cleveland, Mr. Meyer studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He composed and conducted works for ensembles at both schools, including a Stabat Mater for soprano, chorus and orchestra. At Boston University, Mr. Meyer received the Orchestral Conducting Honors Award and was awarded the prestigious Aspen Conducting Prize from David Zinman. He received an honorary doctorate from Edinboro University in 2016. www.eriephil.org

PROGRAM Notes Notes on the Program by Ken Meltzer
Rounds (1944) David Diamond (1915 - 2005) David Diamond is revered as one of America’s most prolific and successful composers. At a time when many composers were exploring avant-garde forms of expression, David Diamond embraced the romantic tradition as the foundation of his works: “It is my strong feeling that a romantically inspired contemporary music, tempered by reinvigorated classical technical formulas is the way out of the present period of creative chaos in music…To me, the romantic spirit in music is important because it is timeless.” David Diamond remained true to his creed. His numerous works, spanning the gamut of chamber, orchestral, and vocal compositions, display an uncommon lyric gift, expressed in the context of an evocative instrumental palette and mastery of formal structure. One of Diamond’s most beloved compositions is his work for strings, Rounds. Diamond composed the work in 1944 at the request of Dimitri Mitropoulos, Music Director of the Minneapolis (now, Minnesota) Symphony Orchestra. Mitropoulos and the Minneapolis Symphony gave the premiere of Diamond’s Rounds on November 24, 1944. Both Mitropoulos and Diamond desired an optimistic spirit in Rounds, a tonic both for the stress of wartime and the rigors of modernist musical expression. And Rounds is a work brimming with high spirits and melody, and one that, as the work’s title suggests, employs canonic settings of musical lines.
Maple Leaf Rag (1899) Scott Joplin (1868 - 1917) In the 1890s, ragtime began sweeping the United States. The popular musical genre’s name derives from its prevalent syncopated, or “ragged” rhythms. Ragtime proved to be the precursor to jazz, which emerged after World War I. The leading ragtime musician was the composer and pianist Scott Joplin, born near the Texas-Louisiana border in 1868. Joplin, dubbed “The King of Ragtime” catapulted to fame with the 1899 publication of his composition, the Maple Leaf Rag. The title may have been a tribute to the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, Missouri, where Joplin performed. Joplin’s beloved composition for solo piano has been featured in many different arrangements. This concert features William Zinn’s arrangement for strings.
Lullaby (ca. 1919 - 1920) George Gershwin (1898 - 1937) When George Gershwin composed Lullaby, he was barely twenty years old, but already a success on Tin Pan Alley and Broadway. At the time, Gershwin was studying with the Hungarian émigré Edward Kilenyi. Gershwin wrote the work as a composition exercise, scoring it for string quartet. The work has also been arranged for string orchestra. Cast in A—B—A form, the brief Lullaby features the beguiling melodic genius and masterful blending of classical and jazz elements evident in such Gershwin masterpieces as Rhapsody in Blue (1924), An American in Paris (1928), and Porgy and Bess (1935).

String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96 “American” (1893) Antonín Dvořák (1841 - 1904) In December of 1891, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák accepted the offer of Jeannette Meyer Thurber to become the Director of her National Academy of Music in America, located in lower Manhattan. Mrs. Thurber hoped that the Conservatory, which she founded in 1885, would foster the development of important American concert music. Dvořák’s three-year tenure as Director of the National Conservatory commenced in the fall of 1892. On September 26 of that year, Dvořák, his wife, and two of his six children arrived from Europe at the port in Hoboken, New Jersey. While on board, Dvořák enjoyed his first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty. Awed by the magnificent sight, he exclaimed, “In the head alone there is enough room for sixty persons!” Dvořák had always taken a keen interest in the folk music of his native Bohemia, and indeed, acknowledged: “I myself have gone to the simple, half forgotten tunes of Bohemian peasants for hints in my most serious works. Only in this way can a musician express the true sentiment of his people. He gets into touch with the common humanity of his country.” It’s not surprising that when Dvořák arrived in America, he began to study the folk traditions of the “New World.” Dvořák concluded that America’s great folk tradition was based in the music of African-Americans (in May of 1893, the National Conservatory opened its doors to African-American students), and Native Americans. In June l893, Dvořák and his family traveled to Spillville, a northeast Iowa town populated by Czech immigrants. There, Dvořák quickly sketched a new String Quartet, writing at its conclusion: “Thanks be to the Lord God. I am satisfied it went quickly.” Dvořák, playing the violin, joined three students to perform the work on June 23. The official premiere of the Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 in F, Opus 96 (nicknamed the “American”) took place in Boston on January 1, 1894, performed by the Kneisel Quartet. The “American” String Quartet certainly reflects Dvořák’s interest in American folk music. It should be added, however, that many commentators have noted that the music evokes as much the spirit of the Bohemian countryside as it does America’s heartland. That is not surprising, given Dvořák’s fervent love for his homeland. In any event, the “American” String Quartet had long demonstrated its ability to touch music lovers from all parts of the globe. The “American” String Quartet is in four movements. The first (Allegro ma non troppo) begins with the viola, out of the mists of tremolo accompaniment, singing the jaunty opening melody. The slow-tempo second movement (Lento) is based upon a lovely and haunting melody, introduced by the first violin. The spirited third-movement scherzo (Molto vivace) offers (courtesy of the first violin) a delightful recreation of the scarlet tanager Dvořák heard in Spillville. The first violin introduces the vivacious, syncopated principal theme of the rondo Finale (Vivace ma non troppo). For the most part, high spirits prevail, as the “American” Quartet sprints to a dazzling close.

Wade in the Water, Deep River, Ride On, King Jesus Harry T. Burleigh (1866 - 1949) Harry T. Burleigh was born in Erie on December 2, 1866. As a youth, Burleigh studied voice and piano, and sang in the choirs of Erie churches and synagogues. In 1892, Burleigh earned a scholarship to study at the newly-formed National Conservatory of Music in New York. The Conservatory’s first Director was the celebrated Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. Burleigh shared with Dvořák many of the spirituals he had learned from his maternal grandfather. Dvořák, a profound early influence for Burleigh, encouraged the young man to document African-American spirituals. In 1894, Burleigh became the vocal soloist at New York’s St. George’s Episcopal Church, a position he would hold for a half century. Burleigh also enjoyed great success as a music editor and composer. In addition to his own original compositions, Burleigh created several beloved arrangements of spirituals. This concert features three of the Burleigh arrangements, with instrumentations by composer and violinist Christina Dolanc.
Plink, Plank, Plunk (1951) Leroy Anderson (1908 - 1975) Leroy Anderson’s genius in combining classical and popular elements made him one of the most beloved American composers. Plink, Plank, Plunk is a delightful example of Anderson’s art. The brief work, scored for strings, begins with three forceful pizzicato (plucked) notes (“Plink, Plank, Plunk!”). The music is off and running, all the way to its surprise ending. For many years, Anderson’s Plink, Plank, Plunk served as the theme music for the popular CBS panel quiz show, “I’ve Got a Secret.”
Music from Company (1983) Philip Glass (1937 - )
Company is the name of a short novel by Samuel Beckett which was adapted for the stage and performed as a monologue by Frederick Neuman. Mr. Neuman had asked and received Beckett’s permission to use an original musical score which I was commissioned to compose. I liked the idea of using the medium of the String Quartet that would allow for both an introspective and passionate quality well suited to the text. Beckett picked four places in the work which he referred to as the “intercices as it were”. Dance Card (2016) Jennifer Higdon (1962 - ) “Dance Card” is a celebration of the joy, lyricism and passion of a group of strings playing together! This piece is made up of five movements, each of which is designed so it can also be played as a separate work. From a string fanfare, through gentle serenades, and actual wild dances, the musicians get a chance to highlight their soloist and ensemble playing. This work reflects the deep commitment that string players bring to their music making, not only in the many years of learning to play their instruments, but also in the dedication manifested in gorgeous musicmaking as an ensemble. When we attend as audience members, we in effect, fill our dance card with that shared experience. — Jennifer Higdon

The Erie Junior Philharmonic has been an orchestra for young people since 1947, and is one of the oldest youth orchestras in the United States. Under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conductor Jonathan R. Moser, the EJP tradionally offers weekly rehearsals, sectional coaching, and advanced chamber ensembles for members of the string, brass, woodwind, and percussion sections of the orchestra. Performance opportunities include annual winter and spring concerts, a tour of schools, ensemble performances, an annual concerto competition, and a performance with the Erie Philharmonic.
