Statesman is first and foremost a student-run publication with six annual issues distributed to students, faculty, staff and community members of Adlai E. Stevenson High School with a press run of 3,000. The primary goal is to serve as a public forum that delivers the news and provides content deemed to be newsworthy and timely to the Stevenson community. The opinions expressed in Statesman do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the administration, school board, faculty, student body or community members.

Homework over break prepares students for upcoming year, reviews previous material

W

ith softball tournaments, working as a hostess and driving lessons filling her schedule, Maggie O’Brien ’19 found herself more than occupied during her summer break.

Hours of reading and notes in preparation for her junior year didn’t help matters.

“Obviously, school comes first,” O’Brien said. “But I thought the summer homework was very overwhelming for the two months you’re not supposed to be overwhelmed.”

Many students oppose summer assignments. But there’s reasoning behind the packet or two students complete between school years: the dreaded summer slide.

A study by the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, found that students lose the equivalent of one month of learning each summer, while the Harvard Graduate School of Education estimated the number to be closer to three months for math classes.

Students like Mary Polupan ’19 find summer work to be a helpful refresher for the year ahead.

“If you take away the assignment component completely, it would be so much harder to adjust to school,” Polupan said. “I know a significant amount of people don’t read their summer reading book, but I think it’s better to

have [the assignment] than to not.”

Work isn’t assigned over the summer for every class, however. While almost every English class requires some form of reading, per the district website only one of the eighteen science classes offered at Stevenson had an assignment due this August.

Ryan Fedewa, physics and anatomy teacher, believes this gives students a much needed respite from their day to day course load.

“I think one of the things this school values is that when kids are on break, they’re actually on break,” Fedewa said.

“Over the summer, we don’t want kids working unless they’ve decided to enroll in a class.”

Fedewa noticed that many of his most successful students participated in STEM-related

camps and research opportunities over the summer.

Organizations like the National Summer Learning Association agree that fun, thought provoking summer activities can be just as useful as a review packet.

Recreational reading falls into this category, according to Doug Lillydahl, communication arts director. Though assigned novels may not cater to every student, Lillydahl believes reading for fun can also boost English skills.

He advises students to partake in a variety of intellectual activities to combat summer atrophy.

“Find opportunities to read and write and engage with interesting ideas,” Lillydahl said.

“If you don’t use it, you lose it.”

Explore these popular locations students visited during summer

CREAM BAR

On a hot summer day, ice cream can be a sweet treat that helps people cool down. At Cream Bar in Schaumburg, customers can customize their own ice cream sandwiches to any flavor or style they want. From baked goods to sundaes, Cream Bar offers unique deliciousness when compared to other ice cream parlors.

HANSA COFFEE

Move over Starbucks, this summer, Hansa Coffee Roasters in Libertyville took the social media world by storm. Stevenson students flocked to the aesthetically pleasing building to snap pictures of coffee and themselves posing by the iconic wall. The menu features everything from regular joe and espresso drinks featuring unique syrups like lavender and honey, to concoctions creatively named Dr. Hansa, Chili P. and Shooter. Overall, Hansa’s unique take on the classic coffee shop was a huge hit.

CHICAGO

Students did not have to travel far from their homes to reach the city of Chicago. To grab a quick bite to eat, students could stop at the West Loop for modern restaurants and coffee shops like the Bombobar or the Little Goat. Students also could not help but stop by Millennium Park to take pictures of the Bean or travel to the top of the Willis Tower. From interests like the Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier and countless museums and art displays, Chicago offered a variety of activities to enjoy and discover.

MUSIC FESTIVALS

Even with school in session, some students can still be seen proudly displaying their LollaPalooza wristbands, still hanging on to the last week of summer fun. Festivals like Lolla, Country Thunder and Summerfest were the main staples of the summers of Stevenson students. Each festival provided a unique opportunity to dress up in “festival worthy” clothes, spend time with friends and hear their favorite artists of all genres perform live.

A SUMMER REVIEW

Lollapalooza

EDM, alternative and rap music alike were all genres well executed at this years four day Lollapalooza event. Chance the Rapper ended his show with fireworks lighting up the skyline. Meanwhile, Kaskade got the audience screaming for more after using a lightshow to entice his audience.

Cage the Elephant, Killers, Russ, Migos, Big Sean and other performers received roaring reviews from their audiences.

Country Thunder

Country Thunder rolled in with extra downpour and a side of lightning. Though country-festival seekers could not avoid getting wet and muddy, the fun times came a rollin’ in anyway. The festival included performances from Keith Urban and Jason Aldean.

Nutella Cafe

Nutella cafe opened in Chicago on Michigan Avenue! Great way to start getting rid of that summer body and ushering in the school year’s stress eating tendencies.

Rick and Morty

This summer Rick and Morty reached a whole new level of popularity, taking over the bright screens of cynical teens.

The tale of a self deprecating genius scientist and his eager-for-action grandson came out with its third season, making Sunday night procrastinating a lot easier for this school year.

TOP FOUR BEST STUDY PLACES

A list of areas in and out of Stevenson that are great places for students to finish school work.

Starbucks: Whether it’s for fun with friends or to study and do

homework, Starbucks is a popular place students go to. Starbucks has tables, chairs, outlets and, of course, coffee. Coffee helps students stay focused during those study sessions. Despite often being filled with students and business people, Starbucks maintains a relatively quiet environment and is perfect for students to study with their friends.

ILC: The ILC, as many students know, is a very social place. Several

students go there to hang out with their friends, but others go there to utilize the resources available in order to complete their homework.

The ILC has computers, books of all genres, as well as a variety of peer and teacher tutors in all subjects. Though the ILC has very strict rules that the students must obey, it’s an amazing place for students to study or socialize.

QLC:

The QLC is also a very popular place for students to study.

Though not as social as the ILC, it’s the best place that students go to when they need to get homework done. It’s absolutely quiet and is the perfect environment for students who get easily distracted by other people talking. It’s a good place to go when students have a big test coming up and they need a study spot where they can focus.

Vernon Area Public Library:

This library is convenient because it only takes around 5 minutes to get there by car. There are many tables and chairs and even quiet study rooms that students can use to finish their homework. In addition, they also have rooms with whiteboards. This is useful for students who want to come in as a group to do homework.

ADVICE FROM LAST YEAR’S SENIORS 2017 graduates offer tips to current students “1. Don’t procrastinate. When studying, study a few days in advance and review the material gradually more and more until your test, or quiz or final.

2. Read 20 minutes a day (shout out to Mrs. Forde) 3. Do clubs for fun. It REALLY doesn’t matter which clubs you do as long as you actually enjoy them (so cough cough, join Zumba).

4. Take a moment to smile everyday. Be kind and wave hi to everyone you know in the halls! It’ll make your day and everyone else’s day so much happier 5. Cherish high school, because I miss it and it has only been 3 months.”

“Stevenson has more to offer than any high school around, which can be overwhelming at first but definitely has its perks. For those underclassmen who feel alone in a school of 4,000+ students, join a club! There’s over a hundred organizations made to fit your interests, so it’s a great way to meet people while doing what you love.

As for upperclassmen, apply for as many external scholarships as you can. Getting into your dream school is one thing, but paying for it is another.

Don’t wait until the last minute to apply for scholarships. Ask your counselor, search online, and ask your parents if their jobs offer any scholarships.”

There are over 125 clubs, plenty of sports and a million extracurriculars you can get involved in, and I recommend you do! Don’t go TOO crazy with the activities you join, but finding something you’re passionate for is what SHS is all about.

I also recommend not worrying so much about being the best ALL the time. Stevenson is so competitive, but there’s no reason you need to stress about not getting an A+ on a test when you only got an A. Finally, PLEASE take care of yourself. Sleep when you’re tired, drink water when you’re thirsty, and eat when you’re hungry. Don’t forget to breathe once in a while too.”

A: In June, we did contact drills and 7-on-7 drills for 23 days. In July we were in the weight room working on speed and agility. We had great participation from the freshmens all the way to the seniors.

Q: As a former defensive coordinator, what do you hope to see from your defense this upcoming year?

A: I’m excited to see how our defense grows throughout the year. Sam Marks ’18 is a vital part of our defense. We have tremendous depth in the defensive line with Liam O’Connell ’18, Evan Anderson ’18 and Ryan Walsh ’18.
