Room or Run?

A look at who we think could be some of the best or worst fictional college roommates Jessica Day from “New Girl” would welcome you to your dorm with an extremely positive and welcoming attitude regardless of who you are, because she expects the same. She would be a great roommate because she is empathetic and patient. She would make a real connection and spend quality time with you. If you were feeling down, she would work to make you feel better, whether it was going out, staying in and making your favorite dish or having an impromptu dance party. While she may get on your nerves just like any roommate would, Jess knows when to give you your space. Jess is always interested in a good time, and will go to every college activity—definitely inviting you along. As a roommate, Jess has potential to be one of your best friends for life. Watch out though, she might show up one day with a youth group or some students who need extra help. If news came to Troy and Abed from “Community” that they were having a new roommate join them they would both be more than welcoming toward you as they host a housewarming party. Most of your time spent with them would consist of binging movie sagas together, creating blanket forts and joining the cast of “Troy and Abed in the Morning” when they do comedic skits. They are also very involved when it comes to activities around their school’s campus like freestyling with teachers and annual paintball competitions. Therefore, not only will you participate in some adventurous and at times weird college events, but you will also be surrounded by two genuine people. Imagine waking up in your dorm to the savory smell of Italian cuisine at your bedside. With Remy the Rat from “Ratatouille” as your roommate, the obstacle of spending too much money on low quality food will be non-existent. Now I know what you’re thinking, but Remy is a clean rat. He washes his hands before cooking and is against walking on four legs as he values personal hygiene and quality in food. Remy is very independent and determined when it comes to fulfilling his goals. Therefore, you and Remy will have a great relationship but will also both value each other’s privacy as you and he focus on your personal obstacles.

Monica from “Friends” would be an extremely uptight roommate. When you move in, she would make sure that your decor matched hers and that it was aesthetically pleasing, not considering your opinion. Monica would get upset very easily by very small messes, making you frustrated and impatient with her. If people were invited over to your dorm, she would scrub for hours and make the event formal, despite the casual nature of most college hangouts. The most problematic part of being a roommate with Monica would be that if she disagrees with your ideas or methods of living, she will publicly disagree or shame you for not doing things her way. Now, Chewbacca might seem a little controversial when viewed as a bad roommate, but hear us out. Although Chewbacca has been to space and can be a great companion, in reality he is just one large pet covered in pounds of fur. He would just shed all over your dorm and smell, causing others to detour away from your dorm within the first week of school. Chewbacca often has tantrums and when something doesn’t go his way he lets out obnoxious howls that may travel down the dorm hallways, bothering everyone. Michael Scott from “The Office” may be the worst roommate on this list. He is a very judgmental and narcissistic person, meaning he will go to great lengths to prove that he is better than you. His insults throughout the day would be conniving toward you and others, preventing you from branching out and making other friends in college. Michael Scott would also try to be the center of attention in large social groups creating an uncomfortable environment. Not to mention, you would have to wake up every morning worrying about turning off his Foreman grill that cooks greasy bacon and avoid stepping on it when getting out of bed.

High School Replayed Staffer’s take on best coming of age movies 1. LADYBIRD (2017) Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut follows Christine ‘Ladybird’ McPherson’s struggles with overzealous expectations of her future versus normal suburban life in Sacramento, California and her often tense family dynamic. Ladybird’s refreshingly realistic, naïve and unique, yet oddly familiar, experiences in her last year of high school encapsulate some of the obstacles, milestones and moments of pure confusion that seniors endure before setting off for their future, whether or not we can predict what it will look like. 2. THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985) The Breakfast Club initially portrays the main characters all spending a Saturday in detention together as over-the-top stereotypical representations of their ‘cliques’: rebel John Bender, jock Andrew Clark, brain Brian Johnson, outcast Allison Reynolds and popular girl Claire Standish. As the day progresses, they come out of their shells and prove themselves to be more than what they’re labeled. It’s no surprise that this film has touched generations of teenagers navigating their identities within a perplexing high school setting and cemented itself as a coming-of-age cult classic. 3. THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (2012) Charlie Kelmeckis writes to an unnamed friend in his diary, detailing the events of his freshman year, while he suffers from clinical depression and trauma. His recounting of the year reels in other characters who are going through their own set of problems, simultaneously providing guidance and companiship for Charlie. This film will particularly resonate with those who have had to balance the demands of high school with familial, mental or social restraints that seem to hold us back from our idealized version of teenagedom and growing up. 4. BOOKSMART (2019) Best friends Molly Davidson and Amy Anstler are the manifestations of worriers about the future as they spend their entire high school careers in pursuit of successful colleges. Yet once they discover their peers have managed to secure similar positions in prestigious schools, their worldview comes tumbling down. The pair’s development throughout the movie that takes place over the course of one day offers a remedy for the toxic college tunnel vision high schoolers often succumb to at one point or another. 5. MEAN GIRLS (2004) Cady Heron enters her junior year in an American high school for the first time, which is, as always, full of social groups and norms that must be followed. She finds herself not only fitting in, but, with the help of friends Janis Ian and Damian Leigh, infiltrating the ‘Plastics’: the most popular girls in the school. Cady’s drama-ridden year characterizes the early high school years filled with concerns about popularity, friendship and self-image. The film ends with a view of the characters starting their senior year and highlights the importance of staying true to yourself, despite how cheesy it sounds.

The Final Word

Statesman seniors provide parting words of wisdom

t’s that time of the year again—we’re cramming for finals, AP tests and wondering how on earth the past few months flew past us. As we seniors start getting ready to pack up our things and head off to begin the next chapter of our lives, we leave our underclassmen with a little bit of heart-felt advice about what we wish we knew earlier in high school. For the incoming sophomores and freshmen, we’ll start off by saying that no, you do not have to have your entire high school career planned out and ready within the first year or so. That’s not to say “throw away your four-year plan” if you already did, but if you haven’t figured out every single detail, that’s completely fine! Your first two years can help you establish what your interests are, what clubs you want to dedicate your time to and a solid group of friends who will support you throughout high school. Don’t spread yourself too thin by joining 15 different clubs—instead, figure out what clubs you truly enjoy, then devote yourself to performing your absolute best in those. This helps to create well-rounded individuals with solid interests and achievements, and it’s something that will help in the long run during college application season. For the incoming juniors and seniors:

make the most out of your high school experience! You should study hard and maintain your academic standing, of course, but you shouldn’t have to feel selfish about having fun in school in the midst of that. Go to school dances, go to football games and other sporting events and make an effort to connect with different kinds of people. Yes, your ACT scores will matter and how high your GPA is can help you get into your dream college, but it’s okay to take some time for yourself and experience all aspects of the high school experience. In terms of college application season, try not to cram all your essays and supplements toward the very end of your deadlines when you’re applying—learn from our mistakes and actually try brainstorming essay ideas over the summer and connecting with your post-secondary counselors for advice instead of trying to do everything at the last minute. Will being a first semester senior be stressful? Yes. But will it be better if you plan ahead of time and give yourself a chance to stop and smell the roses every once in a while? Also yes. Finally, as corny as it sounds, we encourage you to stop worrying so much about what other people will think of you and to be yourself in high school (bet you didn’t see this one coming).

We’ve all stressed out about what other people will say about us whenever we make any sort of decision in school; that’s totally natural and it’s a painful part of growing up. However, sooner or later, most of us will figure out that people aren’t actually going to judge us or care as much about our choices the way we think they will. Yes, actually. Everyone tends to be more focused on their lives and regardless of whether you believe people will remember what you do forever or not, the truth is that they really won’t. Ultimately, it’s your character that people will remember. Don’t let your fear of others’ thoughts and actions keep you from figuring out yourself, your interests and having a genuinely good time in high school. Your high school career is yours. Without a doubt, high school has been one of the most awkward, embarrassing and wildly transformative phases of our lives by far. But based on our personal experiences, we’ve found that we’ve been able to make some incredible friends, experiences and memories throughout it anyways. We hope you will too.
