I thought I was a terrible writer, and could never find the motivation to read. Thank you for instilling in me a love of reading that I had lost years ago. Your stories were always entertaining and the way you taught us to think about what we were reading has helped me with analyzing texts numerous times. I am thankful for your help and advice all along the way.

Thank you so much for being such an amazing teacher! You’ve been such a positive light for the past two years that I’ve had you, and I appreciate that so much! Q: Are you nervous to be apart?

Serena: “I’m definitely excited because we’ve been together for eighteen years and I think it’s going to be fun to be independent and have more freedom [since] I only know a couple people [at Vanderbilt].”

Charis: “We can still see each other on breaks, so we won’t be completely apart, but I think it’s going to be good for both of us to have our own

space and find out what we want to do ourselves.”

Q: Did you apply to any of the same schools?

Isabelle: “We applied to some of the same schools, but most of them were different.”

Natalie: “We wouldn’t mind being at the same school, but we also have different interests and they didn’t really overlap much. It just kind of

Trisha: “Working on homework and studying for tests together helped out a lot.”

Mr. Don Carmichael, Science Teacher “Over 33 years a lot of great memories float at the top of the pool of memories, but it’s hard to say which is a favorite. I have had so many great interactions with students and colleagues that it’s too hard to pick a favorite.

The things that I will remember most are accomplishments like when our divers achieved State Championships, when we created new courses like AP Environmental Science and Earth Science Honors, when we received the Green Roof grant, performing with the Faculty Band and hearing from former students and seeing what the have accomplished.”

Ms. Patricia Duncan, Social Studies Teacher “[The memories are] almost like a tidal wave. You get stacks of memories, and you really want to remember all of them. Even on a daily basis, there’s always something sort of memorable; there aren’t too many boring days.

I think [I’ll miss] the students the most. It’s been a source of wonderful amusement, and yet it has challenged me to grow and to learn. Teaching is the kind of job where you can learn every day. When that’s gone, you don’t have those challenges anymore, and I know I’ll miss that a lot.”

Mr. Jim Kollar, Economics Teacher “Before Mr. Kollar’s class, the only thing I knew about money was how to spend it. Now I know what the difference between nGDP and rGDP is. It is not only the economics lessons that makes Mr. Kollar a good teacher; he teaches his students how to save money, where to sit in a college class, and how to survive working in the real world. His wild stories and high-five Fridays bring joy to a usually stressful class… not to mention that no one can pull off a wig better!”

Ms. Denise Foster, English Teacher “There’s much more to life than what goes on inside these walls. I think what matters more is how we treat ourselves and how we treat each other than what we actually learn in terms of content. My advice is to be good to yourself.

“It’s really hard to leave the students here. They’re so hardworking and philanthropic; it’s impressive. It’s not a single memory [that I’ll miss], it’s the sum total of all the memories that will make it difficult to leave.”

Mr. Joseph Bettina, Math Teacher “Most students are too worried about things that will not matter in the long run. Don’t get too freaked out about grades. Do you choose a doctor who got an A- in their high school bio class over one who got a B+? Don’t be too concerned about your college choice. After a while in your job, no one will care if you went to an ivy league school or to a small college. At every stage of your life, the most important thing is to enjoy and have fun at what you are doing. If you are not, then stop doing what you are doing and do something else.”

Ms. Cynthia Burrows, Theater Teacher “I’m gonna miss the kids: they’re fun, they’re funny, they’re intelligent, they’re savvy. My students keep me on my toes; they make me laugh, they make me cry, and they’re so willing to just go there and try something.

If we’re working on a scene, I can say to them, ‘just try this,’ and almost always, they say, ‘yeah, okay!’ I think I’m going to miss that the most.”
