Statesman is first and foremost a student-run publication with seven annual issues distributed to students, faculty, staff, and community members of Adlai E Stevenson High School with a press run of 3,000. The primary goal is to serve as a public forum that delivers the news and provide content deemed to be newsworthy and timely, to the Stevenson community. The opinions expressed in Statesman do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the administration, school board, faculty, student body or community members.

Stevenson will host its annual One Acts at 7 p.m. The One Acts is a tradition to create a student run show that is written, performed and directed by students.

Prom will be on Saturday, May 14 at the Renaissance Convention Center. This year’s Prom theme is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

MAY 18 SUNDAY The deadline to put a deposit down on a college for the 2016-2017 school year is Sunday, May 1.

MAY 2-13

Advanced Placement (AP) testing will begin this following Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 13.

The first tests of AP week will be Chemistry and Environmental Science.

Junior and senior awards will be given to students nominated by teachers and faculty members. Junior awards will take place during eighth period, and senior awards will take place in the evening in the Performing Arts Center.

Spring Fling starts off with a pep assembly at 2:30 pm and then softball, kickball, volleyball and ultimate frisbee will take place on the back fields.

MAY 31-JUNE 2

Finals begin on Tuesday, May 31 and end on Thursday, June 2. Seniors will graduate on June 2.

STUDENTS WIN FBLA STATE

Twenty-seven members advance to the National Leadership conference

T

wenty-seven students have qualified from the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) state championships to advance to the National Leadership conference, with four of them winning first place.

To qualify for the FBLA National Leadership Conference, students had to place within the top four of their respective events.

Students who participate in the championships can compete either individually or as a team. At the time of registration, participating students and groups choose their event and also receive a prompt if their event includes a prepared presentation.

“There are different types of events,” Taylor Osicek, business education teacher, said. “For some of them, you get a case study that day, and you have 20 minutes to prepare before presenting on it.”

Other events consisted of a prepared presentation that has to meet a number of requirements, a 100-question multiple choice scantron test or a combination of two of them.

Participating members first competed at the regional competitions and then went onto state if they were the best from their school in their respective event.

Alisa Wang ’19 won the Introduction to Business event, which was an online scantron exam. To study, she looked at resources provided to her by the FBLA group and notes from her business class, like many others competing.

“Because my event was an online scantron test, I didn’t actually go the regional event, so I took it at our school,” Wang said. “Because there was a limited amount of people who could go, I wasn’t able to go to Springfield either.”

Eleven competing students who placed in the Top 10 in their respective events celebrate at the state championships in Springfield during spring break took a test at regionals and presented a case study at state, where they won in Management Decision Making.

Their only way to prepare for the case study was to study in the general field of their event because they did not know the exact prompt. The two looked at quizlets and other notes given to them from business teachers.

“We got 15 to 20 minutes to prepare with the prompt, and after those 15 minutes, we gave a 10 minute presentation where we talked to a panel of judges,” Patel said.

The duo had to convince the judges, who took on the roles of actual businessmen in need, to take their advice.

Not only were the two judged on their consulting, but also on their business professionalism.

“We were a management consultant team to a business that was considering building a warehouse,” Balel said. “We had to give them the insight on how affordable that would be, how long they would have to wait for their decision to

pay off and whether it was a good deal or not.”

Rather than doing a case study, Shirley Cao ’18, along with her team members, Ananya Pati ’18 and Jessica Wang ’18, competed with a prepared presentation for the Introduction to Business Presentation event. They received second place.

“Our prompt was to convince a panel of judges to invest $2000 per person,” Cao said.

After a presentation or case study, each group or individual received feedback as well as a score out of 100 points from the judges. Students can use this feedback to improve upon their performance for nationals.

“What’s great is that [students] have the ability to act on the feedback that they get from the judges,” Osicek said.

“They’re allowed to make modifications from the state to the national competition.”

A DAY OF APPRECIATION

Stevenson students and faculty honored the work of Sodexo employees at the annual luncheon

T

he National Honor Society (NHS) of Stevenson held its annual Sodexo luncheon on April 24. Created to honor the employees who contribute to the everyday learning process at Stevenson from serving food to building maintenance, the Sodexo luncheon is an event open all Sodexo workers as well as to all members of the Stevenson community “The school cannot operate without Sodexo running everyday necessities for the building,” NHS Sponsor Vicki Collins said. “The luncheon allows us to not only thank Sodexo workers for their service to Stevenson, but also reflect on everything they do to make our days easier.”

Attendees of the luncheon included Sodexo workers and their families, as well as Stevenson students and faculty. NHS not only served lunch, but also prepared activities for the workers’ children such as a cake walk, coloring and face painting.

The goal was to create a positive and enjoyable environment to show appreciation for each worker’s role that they play in the Stevenson community by providing the workers and their families with food and activities.

“A lot of planning for the luncheon goes into the decoration of a specific theme,” NHS president Tiffany Sheu ’16 said. “NHS volunteers help set up tables, center-

Sheu said that this year’s theme was outer space and that volunteers worked hard to make this luncheon as memorable as they have been in the past. Sheu believes that while students are preoccupied with stress, the luncheon allows students to appreciate Sodexo.

While NHS enjoys planning the luncheon each year, according to them, the great-

est impact was on Stevenson Sodexo workers.

“A lot of the new workers were surprised that we even have a luncheon because they never experienced a day of appreciation like this,” said Habib Osman, Sodexo general manager for nutrition. “It’s very unique and it makes us feel like a part of the Stevenson community.”

According to Osman, Stevenson’s everyday activities would not function without

Sodexo. While they are not teachers or administrators, it is their work in both nutrition and facility maintenance that makes the learning process at Stevenson easy and comfortable for all students and staff.

“Sodexo is the backbone of Stevenson that allows everything to function,” Collins said. “Every year, we just want to take one day to say thanks for everything they do for us.”

BECOMING ANNE FRANK

Senior Claire Katz-Mariani plays Anne Frank in Metropolis Performing Arts Centre

T

he Metropolis Performing Arts Centre has been showing the “The Diary of Anne Frank” almost every year since they opened in 2000. Since then, the show has seen many different people play the role of Anne Frank. However, Claire Katz-Mariani ’16 got her chance this year to play the role.

"This has been of the biggest roles I've had because it talks about the Holocaust," Katz-Mariani said. "It's important to tell the story and make sure people still remember the Holocaust."

Katz-Mariani used her time outside of rehearsal to prepare even more and learn about Anne Frank.

She also tried different methods and training techniques to get her ready for opening night on March 28.

“There was a lot of work that had to be done, not just during rehearsals; I had to get extra information from outside sources,” Katz-Mariani said. "During my free time I went to the Holocaust museum and I watched a documentary to help me prepare."

Even though Katz-Mariani did most of the research and preparation by herself, she still had a significant amount of preparation to go through during rehearsal. That included having to work with the director Steve Leaver and memorizing all of the monologues.

“Claire really connected with the part of Anne,” Leaver said. “She has an excellent work ethic. We had some great rehearsals where we would just work on the monologues in the play which were excerpts taken directly from the diary.”

“Claire had some great insight and wasn’t afraid to try things in rehearsals,” Leaver said. “The results of that hard work was a complex portrayal of a teenage girl who had to grow up in the extraordinary circumstances.”

Katz-Mariani got outside help as well, including help from theater teacher Cynthia Burrows-Lynch who has helped Katz-Mariani throughout her Stevenson career and her work in other roles. “[Katz-Mariani] has completed exercises that encourage actors to create strong and emotionally honest relationships with scene partners,” Burrows said. “She has worked to develop character via animal study, which is a highly physically challenging task requiring a great deal of research as well as physical and vocal exploration.”

ani before the show started by doing something called “silk” with with her.

She described it as doing yoga before the show started.

After all the training that Katz-Mariani and the cast had to go through, the play eventually had their opening night on March 28 and ran until April 10.

“Playing Anne Frank is very emotional and deeply personal to me,” Katz-Mariani said. “I was really emotional after one performance because of how much it means to me.”

After working hard and spending a lot of time preparing for the show, Katz-Mariani earned a lot of praise.

In particular, Leaver was proud and happy to see the performances of Katz-Mariani and the cast.

“Claire was one of the most connected with the role and had the ability think like an actor,” Leaver said.

“She had the knowledge of the character to be able to connect with Anne Frank and that was one of her greatest qualities.”

TECHNOLOGY OVERLOAD

Technology use in education has led to new distractions and cheating outlets STATESMAN EDITORIAL

I

n today’s society, technology plays a crucial role in life–­­for better or for worse. As more and more services become available online, the need for instant gratification also increases.

In the world of education, schools have adapted to today’s technology and continue to do so. For example, Stevenson students0 use Haiku and iPads on a daily basis. While Statesman believes that iPads help keep schoolwork organized, it also allows for new distractions.

Apps, websites and instant messaging can detract from a student’s education.

Statesman believes technology should only be used to further the learning experience, and not just for the sake of “keeping up.”

Another concern is that as new platforms of technology are being introduced, so are new ways of cheating. Statesman believes that the standards implemented at Stevenson

create a competitive environment that causes many students to feel that the only option they have is to cheat.

As technology continues to find new niches in education, Stevenson has begun adding more online courses to its curriculum. That said, Statesman fears that online classes may become hubs for cheating because they allow students to look up answers while taking a quiz or test. Because of this online classes need to be more secure. For example, when taking a test online the only page that can be opened is the one with the test on it, and the rest of the tabs will be temporarily blocked.

Online classes also are much harder for a student to keep up with since teachers don’t check assignments until the end of unit, making it easier to slack off. With an online class, responsible time and technology management is vital in order to be successful.

Technology can also devalue interactions in class because the student is able to go online, get all the activities and homework assignments for the day and not even show up to class.

However, technology also allows students to become more independent in the sense that students get to choose how to use or abuse the resources provided, therefore preparing students for the real world.

Although Statesman believes cheating is not human nature in that most people don’t voluntarily break the rules, added stressors may reinforce the mindset that there is no other option; for some, cheating is a last resort.

Ultimately, technology can be an added distraction to some students, while others use it responsibly and solely for educational purposes. It’s up to the students to decide how to use the technology they’ve been given.

SOCIAL COMMENTARY

T

he night before my first day of seventh grade, I was in my room crying when my mom walked in.

Rumor had it, I told her, that seventh grade was SUPER hard compared to sixth grade.

I panicked at the thought of failing seventh grade, but you have to understand, failing to me meant getting a “B” in one or more of my classes. Spoiler alert: I made it through seventh grade and the next five years. My parents simply expected that I would do well in school, that any less than an A- was unacceptable. The whole Asian parenting thing isn’t just an urban legend.

I was not allowed to hang out at Stabbucks for a couple hours after school nor were friends allowed to come over on weekdays. Heck, I wasn’t even allowed to watch TV on a school night. Even to this day, I have a phobia of asking my mom if I can spend time with my friends. Of course, my parents were far from the truly strict Asian parents, but I secretly envied my friends who could go out every week-

end or throw huge parties while I was at home doing another practice ACT. I thought college was my way out. Once I got to college, I would no longer be dictated by my mom’s mood swings.

That sweet, sweet freedom has never been closer than now.

Graduation is days away, but I keep thinking back to the end of eighth grade.

In the spring of 2012, all of the incoming freshmen took a math placement. When I got my results back, the little black print that spelled out “Advanced Algebra Honors (AAH)” was like a slap in the face to my Asian parents, who were well aware that the highest level of placement was Geometry. While other parents would be impressed had their kid placed in AAH, mine made me sign up for the retakes. Even though I placed great value on academics, I was also pretty lazy and haphazardly did some practices before the retakes. Unsurprisingly, I failed again, which I took as a sign to give up.

After a very stern, very loud

lecture from Mother Guo, I found myself signed up to take the third and last placement test in August, right before the start of Freshman year. My mom wasted no time buying me the “A-Plus Notes for Algebra: Algebra and Precalculus” workbook. That book became my best friend.

A week before the placement test, I don’t even remember seeing sunlight, and I’m not exaggerating. I was locked in my room solving for x and graphing polynomials.

Finally, it’s the morning of the actual test, and my mom runs into my room screaming, five minutes before the test is supposed to start. We drive to Stevenson, violating God knows how many traffic laws, but it’s too late. The math director regretfully informs me that I’ve missed the opportunity to take a test that I’ve spent my entire summer preparing for. On the drive back, I’m in tears. My mom makes a U-turn on our driveway, and suddenly, I’m headed back to school. She marches into Stevenson and begins explaining

the situation to the math director, who repeatedly rejects letting me still take the placement. Luckily, the vice principal was sitting right next to her, and she agreed to let me take the math placement test with the language placement test takers. I finally passed, but that’s not the point here.

The point is that my parents have always watched out for me. They have pushed me to excel in school, and I am grateful that they have. I might tell myself otherwise, but I will still turn to them in college. From that night before seventh grade, when I thought that all hope was lost, to where I am today, I owe it all to my parents.

ACAI BOWL REVIEWS

Statesman writer tries suburban area versions of popular food trend

While it may come as a surprise to smoothie bowl enthusiasts, the acai berry is not native to Illinois. Grown in Central and South America, this purple berry, deemed by some as a superfruit, is incredibly rich in a wide variety of nutrients, including antioxidants. This and the fruit’s earthy, sweet taste is why acai smoothie bowls have soared in popularity.

Open for a little more than a year, this locally owned juicery serves four versions of acai bowls. I opted for the Katie Bowl which contains an acai base blended with coconut milk, strawberries and banana.

The small bowl is topped with strawberries, bananas, blueberries, granola and honey. The Katie Bowl is $8.50 and hardly worth that.

The base, which took up about 90 percent of the bowl itself, was watery and almost flavorless. Its consistency was soupy and hard to eat with unblended acai chunks floating in it.

While you may have seen one too many Instagrams or Snapchat stories of these bowls, they are totally worth the hype. With eight versions of acai bowls, I would consider Peeled the acai bowl experts. I got the Little Miss Sunshine bowl which consists of an acai base blended with banana, mango, pineapple and coconut milk. It is topped with organic granola, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, coconut and honey. The bowl is incredibly flavorful and features the perfect combination of textures with the crunchy granola, soft bananas and acai base. For $8.30, Peeled offers a very generous, meal-sized portion and is definitely worth the drive.

At $6.29, these bowls are the cheapest of the bunch but probably for a reason. While the banana, strawberry, blueberry and coconut toppings on the Acai Primo bowl are tasty, the acai base tastes more like a strawberry smoothie than an acai blend. The granola and base are very sugary and do not taste as nutritious as the other bowls.

The Jamba bowls are a good on-the-run option, but they do not quite have the fresh, wholesome taste of the Peeled bowls.

UNDERSTANDING PRIVACY

Stevenson allows technological freedom to give students real-life experience

W

ith technology becoming increasingly important in our lives, people everywherehave the ability to access all kinds of information, connect with one another and work more efficiently than ever before.

However, despite all of its benefits, it’s apparent that our privacy can become compromised when we subject ourselves to the vast network around us.

In a recent example, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) came into conflict with Apple when the company refused to unlock the iPhone of one of the shooters involved in the San Bernadino case.

“Students at Stevenson are still learning, so what I like about having things be more open is that it’s an opportunity for students to make mistakes and learn from them, rather than going out into the real world with more flexibility and making a mistake then.”

While Stevenson encourages open use of the iPad and the internet, the administration still reserves the right to restrict an iPad if any rules are violated. gy Task Force recommended that the school provide an iPad to each teacher and student as part of its SMART program, Since then, iPads, laptops and computers have been made readily available to students and staff both in and out of school.

Having a more technology-based environment called for a new clause in the Stevenson guidebook––the right to privacy.

The “technology” section in the guidebook, states that “the school reserves a right to inspect any school issued device at any time.”

This means that if the school has reasonable suspicion, they’re allowed to search any technology they want to.

Although these situations are rare, the idea of “reasonable cause” seems

open ended for some students.

“I don’t know if I feel entirely comfortable that it’s at the school’s discretion to decide whether or not they have reasonable suspicion to look at my phone or iPad,” Eray Dursun’ 18 said.

“It all depends on what their definition of reasonable suspicion is.”

Similarly, under the Illinois Right to Privacy in the Student Setting Act, it states that schools must notify students and parents that a student may be required to surrender a “password or other related account information” in order for school officials to access the student’s account or profile on a social networking site.

However, it is only viable if the school has reasonable cause to believe the account contains evidence of a violation of a school’s rule of policy.

FEATURES 15 With over four thousand people using different types of technology around Stevenson, certain restrictions and rules were applied to both students and teachers, Steven Diver, network services manager said. Multiple apps and websites are blocked based on their appropriateness for the school environment.

Stevenson also has the ability to access any information on the school-issued iPads, including browser history, downloads, emails and photos. However, Douglas Kahler, director of information services said that the school is not actively looking through students’ histories.

According to him, it’s more about creating an educational environment

and allowing students to grow.

When it comes to technology, Stevenson’s goal is to give students the benefit of the doubt and allow them to be able to use their iPads how they want to, as long as it is appropriate.

“We’re more open than most schools, I do believe that technology is an education point, an opportunity,” said Kahler. “We do filter a fair amount of sites, but the one thing I didn’t want to do was dictate to the students on how to use their iPads, I wanted to have a more positive environment.”

According to Stevenson’s website, the purpose of technology integration at Stevenson was to “meet students where they are.” Educators felt that as more students are connecting online, it

was important to adjust teaching strategies in order to allow students to learn responsible use of technology.

Allowing students to have more privacy and giving them the benefit of the doubt was a part of the process.

Stevenson’s open ended policy on privacy aimed at teaching students the skills they would need to learn after high school.

“I think it’s good to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, whether you’re talking about devices or privacy, english teacher Nicole Smith said. “It’s better to assume the best and risk being naive rather than assume the worst and end up being paranoid.”

“I feel that students should receive enough privacy that they feel respected but there are still some limitations within a school environment. I think that Stevenson students get enough privacy but the school still controls and limits it well.”

TECHNICALLY CHEATING

Cheating takes on new forms as technology becomes more prevalent at Stevenson

S

tudents are taught at a young age that cheating is dishonest and they should never do it, no matter how desperate they are. In elementary school, it’s easy to follow the rules.

However, when a student reaches high school age, cheating becomes much more prevalent, partially due to the tools that students can access.

There is an abundance of technology at Stevenson. Whether it is in the form of a personal smartphone or a school-issued iPad, students are always online. When the stress that students face is factored together with all of the technology, the result can be cheating.

“Technology makes cheating so much easier for students,” math teacher Deborah Wiersema said. “Cheating has always been an issue at competitive schools like ours and technology has simply opened up new doors.”

Cheating used to involve simply looking over the desk at the test next to yours. Today, cheating is sharing whole answer keys to tests through group messages on Facebook Messenger or other various social media websites.

“It’s easier to cheat now because you can take a picture of something and share it with a lot of people,” Morgan Sanchez ’16 said. “Google and various phone apps help as well, so you’re not necessarily cheating off a person, but you’re cheating off the internet.”

Technology can be used during tests and quizzes to cheat, but it can also be used outside the classroom. The simplicity of being able to text someone with answers to a homework assignment can detach students from the immorality of their actions, causing them to not view it as cheating.

These discrepancies about what students view as cheating versus what actually constitutes as cheating are exemplified by Sanchez and Wiersema.

someone else’s direct work, while Wiersema has a much broader definition.

“I think there’s a lot of misconceptions or ‘innocent’ cheating,” Wiersema said. “Students tend to not realize that discussing a test question in the hallway is cheating. Anything where you are trying to pass off somebody else’s work as your own is cheating.”

Teachers want to believe that their students are honest according to Wiersema. At the same time, teachers must not be naive and too lenient with their cheating rules.

“I want to trust students,” Douglas Kahler, director of information services, said. “We’re in a business to help everybody learn, so we have to communicate our expectations about cheating to students so they don’t do it.”

es of their actions, but they choose to cheat regardless. The situations that drive students to the point of cheating can be different for every individual.

“I think that we care too much about our grades and we’re scared of getting something wrong, so our competitive nature causes us to feel like we need to cheat,” Sanchez said. “I don’t think anybody’s proud of cheating, but I understand when students get so desperate that they feel like they need to.”

Technology is always changing and new devices are being created everyday. Schools will have to adjust for any evolving technology as time goes by.

“Technology continues to advance––it’s a moving target,” Kahler said. “As new technology becomes available, we have to figure out ways to move forward with school policies.”

Nicole Schwartz was a four-year member of girls’ swimming. She was a manager for the boys’ swim team this year as well. She will be continuing her swim career at Chapman University.

Irune Andres transferred to Stevenson her junior year and joined the girls’ swim team. For the past two years, she was an IHSA state qualifier. Andres will attend Northwestern University.

Jordan Newman was a member of the boys’ varsity basketball team for all four years. He was also part of last year’s state championship team. Newman will be playing basketball at St. Norbert College.

After transferring to Stevenson, Rodney Herenton joined the boys’ varsity basketball team.

He committed to Stanford University to continue his basketball career as a preferred walk-on.

Madison Kempf was a four-year member of the girls’ soccer program at Stevenson. Kempf will be playing soccer at Carthage College.

Sabrina Illian was a member of the girls’ varsity soccer team. She will be continuing her soccer career at Rose-Hulman University.

Jeremy Klaber was a member of the boys’ soccer team for all four years. In addition, he participated in boys’ track his freshman year. He will be playing soccer for Augustana College next year.

Jun Min was a four-year member of the boys’ varsity soccer team. He will be attending Knox College next year for soccer.

Christian Dutler has been on the boys’ baseball team for all four years of high school. He will continue his baseball career by playing for Truman State University.

Justin Kopech was a four-year member of the boys’ baseball team. He will be attending Beloit College in Wisconsin and playing baseball.

12. MICHAEL KORDEK

Patrick Loeffler was a member of the boys’ baseball team for all four years. In addition, he was a member of the 2015 varsity football team.

Loeffler will be attending Indiana University.

Michael Kordek was a member of the wrestling team for all four years and spent two of those years on varsity. He will be part of the University of Northern Iowa’s wrestling team next year.

Vinaya Rao will be playing tennis next year for Carnegie-Mellon University. During her time at Stevenson, Rao was a member of the girls’ varsity tennis team for all four years.

Chucky Sullivan was on the football and lacrosse teams for three years, and he played basketball for two years. He decided to attend Western Illinois University to play football.

Girls’ varsity basketball team nominated for High School Team of the year award

T

he Chicago Sky posted a poll featuring 10 girls’ varsity basketball teams from the state of Illinois asking which one deserved the honor of “Chicago Sky High School Team of the Year.” One of the teams on that list was the Stevenson girls’ varsity team.

“It is a tremendous honor and is speaks volumes about our team’s work ethic and the amount of success they had on the basketball court this year,” head coach Ashley Graham said. “Everyday they came to practice and games ready to compete and gave their best attitude and effort. As a coach, you are thankful

for kids like that.”

The team worked hard this year, winning 25 games and also had lots of success off the court, including raising over $2,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. During the holiday season, the team packaged meals at Feed My Starving Children to help deliver food to over 100 children.

“Every single person goes to practice and gives 110 percent every day,” varsity center Klaire Steffens ’18 said. “It’s a lot of a commitment and it is a long season but with all the hard work we put in, it definitely shows it is paying off. The coaching staff has also did an amazing job

with keeping us encouraged and every single teammate was encouraging.”

Along with the success both on the court and off the court, the varsity team was academically motivated and put in as much effort as possible to commit and encourage everyone, according to Coach Graham. The team was also able to have a cumulative GPA average of 3.48.

“The entire year was a success, not only on the basketball court, but in the classroom and community,” said Coach Graham. “It was an honor to be their coach, and [the players] are the ones that earned this award.”

SPRING FLING READY

Non-athletic students share their training schedule in preparation for competition day

“This is my third year participating in Spring Fling. Each year, my friends and I participate as a theater kid tradition. It’s not just athletes who want to play, but all different types of students throughout the school that are interested. In my opinion, the sports Stevenson offers, such as kickball and ultimate frisbee, allow all different types of students to play and have fun.When it comes to the game itself, student athletes definitely have an advantage because they are trained and are in better physical shape for the most part. But overall, spring fling is laid back and a great way to have some fun with your friends towards the end of the school year. My personal favorite part is to see all the colors and styles of the jerseys and how creative students can get with it.”

I love spring fling because it is an event you do not have to try out for, but rather spend time with friends in great weather. Depending on the sport, the game can become competitive. My team is playing ultimate frisbee this year, which is typically a fast paced sport. Student athletes may have an advantage, but at the end of the day, winning or losing doesn’t matter to me. I think the event is more about having a great time with friends and cheering on teammates.”

“I have been participating in Spring Fling since I was a freshman, so this is my third year. Spring Fling is a good time to spend with friends and end the school year off on a good note. Every year my team plays ultimate frisbee, but this year we decided to switch things up and play kickball.

We plan to meet up once to practice for the event, but we are mainly doing that to have fun. I think the sports offered are a good variety that allow people of all different strengths to enjoy.

The best part about Spring Fling is having a good time with friends and encouraging each other to do well, along with seeing the different jersey designs.”

Specifically, I love team sports because it requires you to build trust in others. It leaves you with a fun experience even if you lose, which is what I love about team sports and the atmosphere that Spring Fling provides.

This year, my team is playing softball, and I have never played that in spring fling before. However, I have always wanted to because I spent half of my childhood in Pakistan, and cricket in Pakistan is as big as football in America, so I have always found softball very interesting because it was kind of similar to cricket and lots of fun to play.”
